I know, I posted that link before. I was wondering whether Win7 just provides basic functionality or more. Maybe SMS sending is provided (maybe!), but what about changing APN profiles and the adressbook? If one needs an extra program for this I can recommend the free German chipcardmaster.de.

About 3G.. I mentioned I'm a real beginner.
But maybe you can help me understand something.
Are we waiting for an Acer 1810 that has the internal capability
to insert whatever module our G3 provider uses?
For example, (from the White Paper)
In Taiwan, Taiwan Mobile uses a Quanta module,
while FarEastTone uses a Huawei module.
In the US, Sprint uses a Novatel module.
Verizon also uses a Novatel and other modules.
If 3G providers do require specific modules,
why would Acer sell an 1810 with a Huawei?
Would it work with Taiwan Moble?
Would it work with Sprint in the US?
Or, are internal 3G modules more like internal modems that
can be configured to work with any internet provider?
Is there a 3G for Notebooks thread here or anywhere? -
They are just like modems. SIM cards are the same worldwide. Sometimes providers sell cell phones or 3G dongles for a reduced price which then are locked to a specific card or net but this one in the Acer is unlocked.
Don't know if they sell it with the Huawei module in Taiwan, though. As long as the module is unlocked it doesn't matter much. Huawei is a good brand however.
EDIT:
Some countries use different frequencies but the Huawei module in the Acer is quadband which makes it operate worldwide.
From the German Acer site...
UMTS/HSPA: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz
Quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz -
So the 1810 models with 3G have the internal connector with
the versatile Huawei module already inserted. I guess all other 1810 models
are not 3G-ready, because they do not have the internal connector.
BTW... After waiting months for the SU7300~1810T,
I've decided to wait longer for the 1820PT tablet.
The specs on the 1820PT also mention a 3G option.
"WWAN: UMTS/HSPA at 850/900/1900/2100 MHz and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), upgradeable to 7.2 Mb/s HSDPA and 5.7 Mb/s HSUPA, supporting receiver diversity and equalizing at 2100 MHz"
Does "upgradeable" mean upgrade to 3.5G or 4G?
Does this mean the ability to flash the module, or maybe just upgrade software? -
Quick question for the new 1810t owners. As we all know, the laptop comes with Windows 7 64bit already installed, right?
Do you get a recovery dvd with the PC or not?
How do you preform the format? I would really like to remove all the bloatware.
I got a Win 7 Professional edition already (from MSDN-AA)but it gives me only one licence.
Would i lose my OS if I do a format? (I also hate the small partition that is there for the recovery process,i would like to remove that too!) -actually thats how my older D150 was set up. -
In the european version you don't get recocery discs, youl'll have to burn them yourself.
I really havent removed much so far, except some Norton and McAfee stuff, no problem. -
Burn them isn`t an issue for me, but where can you find the OS so you can load it up for future use?
I had a stupid HP some time ago, with the recovery partition but this has never worked for me! -

Run the application, and it should ask you for a CD/DVD to burn the image to. The catch with this method is that you have to have a cd/dvd burner attached. I don't know if it will allow you to burn into an ISO file.
I bought an external DVD Burner just to avoid this headache. I'm sure when the industry figure out a way to make a ton of money from USB and SD recordable only, we will al be able to burn images to flash based storage the way we do with CDs/DVDs. -
Hey guys, Im new to this forum, but joined on the basis that I will be getting a Acer Aspire 1810 dual core, relatively soon.
Im wondering if anyone, that has recently got one, can post some personal pictures of the unit and give a bit more feedback on it.
Great information resource on these models btw, Thanks all. -
That`s pretty much what i wanted to know.
I would like to make a clean format, but using the windows that are provided with the unit.
In case someone makes a format without having the backup already made , thats game over right? -

That can´t be a coincidence
-
I will be doing the same thing. I have preordered the Professional version (I need to be able log in to a domain) to replace the HP.
With my previous experience with Win7 RC1, you can do a clean install on top of an old OS (XP, Vista, Win7). Your old OS, applications, files, etc. will be moved to a folder called windows.old. You can then safely delete this folder (if that is your intent). -
I am planning on installing a 7200rpm HD, so I want to make sure that I know how to do a clean re-install, as well as any pitfalls to avoid.
Thanks in advance.

I think overall this is a very attractive laptop for the price range. I do agree with you about the Asus looking a little nicer in black anyway. I'm not too fond of the way the brushed aluminum model looks for some reason. -

Seriously, though, its not so bad that I can't live with it -- just wish Acer gave some thought to it. However, forced to choose, I'd always pick function over form, which is why I'm not any regrets really with this baby, especially, as you mention, at this price range
With Asus, the pictures give the impression that the battery doesn't show from above the keyboard - but hey, you can't always get everything you want

Loving it!!
Come on Amazon bring out some more!!!
Btw your mug has a crack? -
Oh well, two more days... -
You can't reinstall the system from an .ISO. -
It's possible to create ISOs if you don't have a DVD drive(see Timeline Tweaks) and then create a bootable USB stick.
I bought an external drive for my 1810t though, they are cheap and good to have just in case. -
I myself will install from a DVD since I only have a limited number of USB sticks but have a stack of DVDs.
For those curious, here is what Der Mali is talking about:
from Timeline Tweaks (Der Mali's sig)-
Creating ISOs without an optical drive:
http://www.virtualcd-online.com/
[Basic process: I installed VirtualCD, set up a "virtual burner" drive, then selected the "create and insert blank medium" option in Virtual CD and selected "ISO DVD+R". Then I ran Acer eRecovery wizard. When it asked for another blank disk, I did "create and insert" again (in VirtualCD) and put another "ISO DVD+R". Same thing for the third (application/drivers) recovery option. At the end, I have 3 ISO's that appear to be the same size as the DVDs I burned using a friend's external drive. I can test them sometime in the near future and let you all know i f they burned and/or booted successfully.]
Creating USB Boot stick:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5329860#post5329860 -
Also, you can do that in Linux for free. I put an image of Visio on a USB stick for so I could install it on my 1410.

As an off-topic anecdote, yesterday when I was patiently working from home waiting for the Fedex truck to deliver, I googled if there is a way to track the Fedex truck itself -- since I needed to get to work and the delivery promise was only by 3 pm. While I didn't find anything relevant, I found this forum for women waiting with the same exact anticipation, for their handbag
http://forum.purseblog.com/hermes/could-that-possibly-fed-ex-truck-i-hear-512516.html
It was funny reading their posts, as I'm sure the Venusians would find us Martians (at the risk of political incorrectness, presumably this forum is mostly male) mostly equally ridiculous -
i preordered the blue dual core on the 21st from amazon. still not shipped yet!
...this will be my primary laptop.. downsizing my digital stuff
-
Has anyone contacted amazon.com to find out when the next batch will arrive?
I would do it myself, but i`m living in Greece, so that wouldn`t be so helpful -
microsoft has released official tool for that. supports image files and can transfer cd/dvd to usb for booting
http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool -
Does anyone know if it will come in brushed aluminum like the other timeline models?

Ok, I have a day 2 update with my 1810T. Last night I burned my Acer eRecovery DVDs right off the bat. It takes 4x 4.7 DVDs (I think it just uses a small part of the 3rd restore disc). Disc 4 is for drivers & apps. Kind of a bummer that it doesn't permit you to do it on 2 dual-layer discs, since I had a handful of those I was specifically intending to use for this purpose. Other manufacturers' "burn your own" routines (I think HP specifically) let you use DL discs.
Anyway, I used my LG external DVD burner and some new TDK DVD-Rs. It took a few hours to burn all of the discs and then verify the disc after burning it.
So this morning I popped the stock Hitachi 5400rpm drive out and installed my WD Black 320gb 7200rpm HDD. A word of warning--exercise caution when removing the stock HDD and installing the replacement. Instead of standard SATA connectors, Acer uses a thin SATA data + power combination flat cable taped to a rectangular piece of ESD material that is secured to the underside of the HDD by some strong adhesive. The end of that cabvle in turn goes to a small grey header on the mobo. I've honestly never encountered such a configuration before. Even on my smaller Asus 1000HE, it utilized the standcard "cage" drive installation method. So I encourage anyone doing a HDD swap to be patient, have a few small screwdrivers and some steady hands. It's critical to not bend the SATA/power flat ribbon cable as well as making sure the tiny end of it is secure into the header and then to press down to make sure the connection is secure. The first time I did it, the HDD wasn't recognized in the BIOs and I had to gently reseat the drive. Apologies to Der_Mali if you've covered this particular fact previously in the Timeline Tweaks thread...
So, after I got the new HDD installed and recognized, I tried to restore Windows from the Acer DVDs I'd burned and I had a bad disc #2 (depsite the Acer utility verifying the burn last night). I then had to yank my WD HDD again and, since I fortunately hadn't wiped the stock HDD yet, just used Arcronis to clone the stock drive onto the 7200rpm drive. Whew. It ended up being nearly an all-day process. If Acer would just bundle a damn restore DVD with their units!!
Anyway, I went ahead and ordered a set of $23.xx ($20 + tax, free standard shipping) restore discs from Acer's website. The recovery discs aren't even available yet from Acer for these new machines but they figure they'll be available in 1-2 weeks. I figure it'll be helpful to have them for eventual resale purposes anyway.
Otherwise, this little guy is doing great. Installing the 7200rpm HDD raised the WEI hard drive score from 5.4 to 5.7. Boot times are reduced slightly and I have not noticed any substantal increase in temperatures or fan activity. Very nice! -
-
-
It really sucks you had to order those recovery discs. I hope I won't (or anyone else here) have to do the same. I keep spare drives around and will install the new OS on that. -
It'd be nice to have them, as you say, though I'm thinking I'll just backup the entire drive to my NAS once I arrive at a rather stable state of affairs. I'm not considering a resale anytime in the foreseeable future, so I'm simply interested in disaster management. So personally, I'm interesting in backing up my entire drive after I've removed all the bloatware, installed all the Microsoft updates, etc. I spent most of my time so far removing bloatware, installing Windows update (more than 1 Gb of that, including that for Office 08 Enterprise installed), just so don't have to do over all that again in case of a disaster. Missing Apple Time-Machine dearly for the backup strategy.
A curious observation: with my stock Hitachi hard-disk my WEI is already 5.7, so maybe we are within the noise levels of detection. I might just splurge on a SSD sometime later however, when the cost/Gbit decreases just a little more...Attached Files:

My Dell came with "provision for" a WWAN PCIe Mici-card, SIM card and already came equipped with the necessary antenna cables (2). All of which is missing from the standard 1810TZ package (2GB / 250GB).
It basically looks the same as the WLAN Mini-card which has been pictured in Phil's 1810 review as well as a forum member's pics in this thread. Here's a pic of Dell's edition (same physical specs).
EDIT / OT: WHAT THE HECK IS THIS???
Acer Ferrari One 200-312G25N (LX.FRC02.119)
Athlon X2 L310 2x 1.20GHz • 2048MB • 250GB • ATI Radeon HD 3200 (IGP) shared memory • 3x USB 2.0/Gb LAN/WLAN 802.11bgn • PCMCIA Typ II Slot • 5in1 Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro/xD) • Webcam (0.3 Megapixel) • 11.6" WXGA glare LED TFT (1366x768) • Windows 7 Home Premium • Li-Ionen-Akku (6 Zellen, 4400mAh, 4h Laufzeit) • 1.50kg -
IIRC that's how it was on the last Acer I had as well as a family member's machine I recently set up. Otherwise, I've always tried to purchase portable machines that came with a dedicated OS/restore disc in the box and I've built my own desktops for years where I owned a full OS install disc.
But yeah, I was so aggravated by that point in time that I didn't even think to try the backup burn again until my drive image was about halfway finished... -
-
I'm thinking about buying an extra battery for the 1410/1810 but I don't see it on the Acer site, is there anywhere else I could get one?
-
I played with an Acer 1410 (SU2300) at our local Fry's Electronics store today. (Sold out BTW; Only had the display model).
Tethered it up to my TMobile G1 via WiFi and hit the Lady Gaga HD Video on YouTube (IE8/Flash Player 10) ... Surprisingly, at full screen, it didn't skip a beat but the CPU usage was hovering between 85-95%.
SU2300 is pretty dang impressive.
Cheers,
Kermee -
I noticed that Fry's is shipping the 1410, even though those are not available at stores... though these maybe available elsewhere as well

The area beside the touch pad looks so, but I don't know if it really is.
The back of the display seams to be plastics.
-
It'll be interesting to see if it's possible to OC the 1810T's SU7300 from 1.3 GHz to 1.73 GHz that the ASUS UL80Vt-A1 does by changing the FSB from 800 MHz to 1066 MHz (as reported by AnandTech).
Now that'd be pretty amazing.
Or better yet, bump the FSB of the 1410/SU2300 to 1066 MHz to get 1.6 GHz... Hrm...
Cheers,

I have the black one, and yes, it look "similar" to brushed aluminium, but it's plastic. The feel isn't bad, I like it, but of course aluminium would have been better. I guess that for the prize that little lappy sells, aluminium was out for the question...

We're even worse of in Holland. The only thing they upgraded here is the cpu to a su4100. Memory and hdd are the same as the original 1810t, but we still have to pay at least €490 for it.
I ordered one on friday, with an estimated delivery time of 1-5 workdays, which means I should be the proud new owner of a 1810tz by friday. -
Hi guys, anyone knows if there's an easy way to add a 3G module on it ?
Thanks !
