The DayVue NuShield will help with the screen glosiness. I highly recommend it since it makes viewing in glare much better although the screen is still glossy.

Would someone be kind enough to verify Intel VT-x is available/enabled in the 1810T (either in BIOS, etc.)?

    Thanks!

    Cheers,

It really depends on how badly you need a notebook right now. There are "nicer" culv notebooks out there - Toshiba, Lenovo, just to name a few. But many of them are not available yet, and they don't quite match Acer's offering (at least for now) in the 11.6 arena.

Why not get the 1410 with the SU2300? Get a good 'skin' for the lid. If you don't still like it, I'm sure someone else in this forum would be more than willing to take it off your hands- and don't forget bing cashback.

Just order it already. These things look to be hot sellers and I don't see prices dropping much before the end of the year. Win 7 just came out and is solid, so it's a good time to buy. The 1410 refresh is certainly a better value proposition than any lame Atom-based netbook. I simply love my 1810T and feel it's the best of the current 11.6" class, especially bang for the buck.

Sorry, I can't give an advice. They will perform the same, that's for sure but other than that, it clearly depends on what you need/want. I've used laptops and tablets and I might go for the convertible but it's more expensive and heavier. If I had to purchase right now it wouldn't be an easy decision.

One thing I can suggest is that you go ahead and order it. It'll place you in the queue but until around the time it actually ships, you can very likely cancel it. So if you find it elsewhere sooner than Amazon (looks like Newegg and JR.com are popping up with stock), cancel it. Otherwise you ensure that you'll get your fix as soon as Amazon gets the stock. Another thing to watch for is what Amazon states as your anticipated delivery date after you order -- if they give you something more substantial than 3 - 6 weeks, it likely means that they have a high confidence on their expected ETA.

Hey everyone! My company is online, as are my coworkers, so staying connected is a priority. I have been waiting to figure out which netbook would work best for me. I usually need to web browse, resize and save photos from my SD card (photoshop - I could use gimp), and edit videos for YouTube (Adobe Premiere). I would love to think I could use the 1810tz or 1410 for recording from my mixer as well. Will the new breed of laptops do this? Am I asking too much? I have a big bad laptop that I use for all things I do but I'm looking for something to carry with me in case I need to jump online and take care of business. I'm also on the road covering events and would love to thing a netbook could handle most of my needs.

Have we determined if the TZ is that much better than the 1410 processor wise??

I first noticed the possibility of 9-cell 12 hour ~Timeline batteries here at Liliputing.

BTW.. I too an waiting for the 1820PT Tablet.
Just to explore the exciting touch functionality in Win7
Performance should be identical to the 1810 series.
My only concern is the weight and the thickness of the body.
Hopefully I'll be able to get my hands on one before purchasing.

The current ~1810T looks and feels just right.

I'm assuming you mean the 1410/SU2300 combo. The short answer is no (check my sig for performance difference). Photoshop benefits more from more RAM and fast HDD.

What laptop do you have now, and what recording programs do you have?

Looks like VT-d is supported (that is not blocked). (I don't recall any specific BIOS setting for it though... I could've missed it). This was extracted with hwinfo ( http://www.hwinfo.com/). I ordered the black 1810T from J&R on 10/19/09. It is still showing backordered. Has anyone received this model from them? I'm wondering if they still haven't received their initial shipment or if my order was too late and will be in a second shipment.

A very easy way for owners to verify this is to run this small program called "Securable" located below.

    http://www.grc.com/securable.htm

You just download it, run the single .exe file and it will tell you if your processor is 32 or 64 bit compatible, if it has hardware d.e.p and if it has hardware virtualization.

When I ran it on my Vaio TZ with a Core 2 Duo U7500 processor (which supports hardware virtualization), it told me that it was locked off which Sony does in most of their PCs.

So I am curious for owners to post their results, of course also mention which model and processor they have. :)

For those thinking about a 1820 convertible:
I own a Toshiba Tecra M7 for a while and rarely use the touch screen only for hand painting and noting.
I just saw a guy using it during a presentation making paintings on his PowerPoint tranparencies, what was helpfully.
Otherwise I prefer keyboad and mouse.

The rotational joint is a bit sensitive. The common joint for a none convertible is sturdier.
The touch screen is heavier and consumes additional power.

    Yes, thank you for this.

I broke down and went for it, (originally said I was going to wait a month...LOL), the unit should reach me in a few days.

Would love it if one of the early modders (was it Der Mali?) would be kind enough to post pictures of the hard drive swapping, which according
to the last post they wrote in this thread involves a miniature SATA connector which is allegedly very delicate, and a bit more difficult to manage?

    Thanks in advance.

    Can anyone confirm this?

If acer have been putting aluminium on the palmrest it´s a hell no for me ! :D

Are they gonna release 1810tz in white with su7300?

Netbooked reviewed the 1410 in white.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tJWiuL6dF4

The palmrest is indeed silver-colored but I believe the material is plastic, not aluminum. So it is not white all the way around like a Mac if that's what you are getting at.

I think it's doubtful the 1810T/1810TZ will make it to the US in white. I don't recall Acer ever adding more SKUs for colors after product launch. FYI it's the 1810T that has the SU7300 processor, not the 1810TZ.

    ciao Federico,

Although I'm pretty much set on the 1810TZ (413G32N package), I did review quite a number of "Netbook-sized" portables and you can review my list of candidates if you like. I have yet to consider the "new" Asus eee nor am I really interested in Tablets, but I am basically looking for an 11.6" based Netbook that can (at the very least) play back 720p in all formats (including non GPU-assisted Adobe Flash video) as well as be able to do standard stuff (surfing, Google Earth, basic Office apps, etc). The ability to do some "emergency" Photoshop work would be a definite plus but it is not a requirement.

Of course it's plastic. I wonder whether it's only painted silver and white or black material underneath. I will desticker the wristrest and hopefully not remove any paint in doing so (if it's paint).

Someone who already has an 1410/1810 should take a small material sample to find out but I know that's asked a lot.

Awesome! Thanks, soliton! I wasn't expecting VT-d would be enabled; that's for hardware passthrough. Only VT-x is needed for virtualization. (I've been playing with Xen too much with VT-d and TV/DVB PCI cards lately).

    Great info! Thanks!

FWIW, J&R now has the 1810T-8638 (Black) listed as in stock / "Usually ships in 1-2 business days". With Bing.com 5% back and Free Shipping it's 569.99.

I was no longer able to resist its siren call and ordered. :GEEK:

I think the Asus overclocking is enabled/controlled through Asus' BIOS. There is no software to download as far as I am aware. Also in the Asus ul20, maximum overclocking is only 5 % (gleaned from screenshots).

I had the 1410 and sold it. It was an amazing machine. I want to order the 1810t really bad but I can't make a decision based on the new tablet version coming soon. Can Acer please give us a ETA and price on the tablet. Oh wait thats asking to much lol... I will say the 1810t will feel better than the tablet but that damn multitouch is playing mindgames with me....

I'm in the exact same boat as you. Specially the 'emergency photoshop work'. Have already ordered a Lenovo T400s to use as my main computer. Though the T400s is light for its size, I want a 2nd lighter machine to carry with me everywhere.

The old 1401 retails at ~450 CAD here in Canada. I can't decide whether to get that or wait and pay the ~$200 premium for the 1810T with SU7300, given I will already have a decent Thinkpad to work with.

By the way for anyone interested (in Canada). The source CC is already selling the Red SU4100 model http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&category=Notebooks_English&product=2510713

The blue one is slated as "coming soon".

NCIX is also listing four models but there are none in stock just yet.

The 1410 from the source has a severely neutered battery. 2200mah ain't gonna cut it.

Good eye. Too bad NCIX doesn't list specs just yet (or at least I can't find 'em) I hope they don't do that with batteries in all the models here. Hopefullly the SU7300 version will have the better battery, if and when its available here. We do generally get the short end of the stick here so I'm skeptical.

I hope that's accurate. I placed an order for this exact machine on 10/19/09 from J&R and I just looked at my order status and it is still "Back Ordered". I tried calling them just now but they're closed. :(

UPDATE: I just got an email stating my order has shipped! Should be here in 2 days!

My order from newegg shipped and will be delivered tomorrow. I did get 2% bing. I don't trust J&R due to previous backorders, but it would have been nice if it was a bit cheaper.

Yeah... I couldn't resist the $12 from Bing either. I wish it was 20% like it was before ;)

    Cheers,

Mine hasn't shipped, but that's a good thing. I don't want it to arrive before Friday, so that requires them to ship no sooner than Wed.

5% Bing at Tiger Direct/Circuit City w/Free shipping. I think they have a the T and TZ, but only single core 1410s. Search "a180-116*" in their site to see all of the Acer 11.6" models they have in stock.

I can confirm the newegg model ships with the Intel 5100agn adapter and connects to 802.11a APs. The sticker and specs have been changed to list it as "Acer Nplify 802.11a/b/g/draft-n" but it's still the intel card. It connects up to 802.11a APs just fine.

Awesome. Thanks for the confirmation! ... Does anyone still use 802.11a though? ;) Just curious... I never got into 802.11a AP's. Just 5 GHz 802.11n AP's.

    Cheers,
    Kermee

Guess a bunch of us are getting 1810T's this week. Just got my shipping confirmation from Newegg also for UPS Next Day Air Saver!

I`m also ready to order, but can`t really choose between JR and Newegg.
Amazon is out, cause it got no stock. One other option is Tiger Direct.

Since i`m from Greece and i want to order, so that a friend can receive and bring it to me later which company would you suggest? I have never used any of these, so any help would be much appreciated!

Tiger Direct/Circuit City because they only show what they actually have in stock ready to ship. I got my 1410 two days after I purchased it with standard delivery. I was very pleased with their service and how well their site worked with Bing.

Upon further review, it looks like they (CC/TD) are still selling the black TZ even though they wont ship for 7-21 days. When the AS1410 originally came out they only showed what was in stock. When they sold out, they removed the item until from the site they had more to sell. Maybe that was because they knew the SU3500/Vista model was going to be limited.

A few posters earlier complained against JR.com's customer service, return policy (in case of a bad unit) etc. Newegg and Tigerdirect appear to be safer bets -- I personally haven't had problems with any of them.
