For me..at least with win 7..my HD doesn't flash much at all. With vista..the HD was always doing something..
Using win 7?
-
Yeah Win7 and by default indexing. Should i turn it off?
-
I personally turn it off..but I don't know if that's what is making your HD spin. I'm sure someone here can offer some insight.
-
If you disable (services wise):
* Windows Search (Indexing)
* Windows Disk Defragmenter
* Superfetch
* Prefetch (via registry)
Then... your HDD shouldn't be spinning too much
Cheers,
Kermee
P.S. Also, Pagefile will affect HDD spinning but depends on how much RAM you have, if any programs are paging, etc. -
looking at my issue from one other angle, i've been working on an old emachines desktop for a while now, and managing to make it work for me... the machine just crapped out on me, and i dont think i'll try to fix it, but i looked up its processors score on the passmark site, and it had a score of 445... i managed to get work done on that with 1.5 gb ram... although thats on windows xp, i think i'll be just fine with the 1410 and adding more ram in a few months...
i'll come back and post my results, just in case anybody searches this topic in the future and wants to know what my ableton live results looked like
thanks again -

I've just noticed something odd... When I open Opera my 1410 starts making this strange whine/buzzing noise. It's not the HDD and it's not the fan.
It goes away as soon as I close Opera. What could it be?! It doesn't happen with IE. -
I have my 1810T hooked up to a 25" monitor via HDMI, with wireless keyboard and mouse. I don't miss having a noisy, power hungry tower sitting next to me. As for the 1410, it is the engine for my XBOX360 media center. -
is anyone else having to wait a good 40-45 seconds for the 1410 to boot up? i have the latest 3210 bios version ...

Hi all - for those with the higher end models (SU7300 or even SU4100) do you find you can use this laptop as your main PC?
Is it powerful enough to run heavy programs - minus gaming of course? -
-
I personally have been using a gateway laptop which is several years old. Has a core duo t2250 and it can do all of the Photoshop work and audio/video stuff perfectly fine. It had 2g of ram. I am expecting the su7300 1810t to be perfect for everyday use. The processor has higher scores on every benchmark than the 2250 did. More memory will be nice too..along with the multitouch pad.

Acer Aspire AS1410-2285 -- did the price just go up? I ordered on on Friday with Amazon for $400. I looked today and it is $550. Anybody know what's going on with that?
-
I ordered from Amazon last Thursday and overnighted it for $4 using the 3-month Prime trial. It's a great little machine. Final price would be about $360 after $30 off (signed up the amazon credit card) and the 3% cashback. -
-
The blue and the black 1410 with su2300 seemed to have come off the j&r website over the weekend two... the red is the only one left with that processor
-
I think the laptop is only out for couple months, it's just selling that well. Amazon had been out of stock couple times now.

I've been getting about 5 and a half hours on the battery with the 1810t. I became frustrated with Office crashing all the time, so I formatted the HD and then did a complete install.
After the install, I installed Battery Bar and I was surprised to be getting around 7-8 hours after the install. Turning off wi-fi bump it to 8:45. I guess all that bloatware was relly bogging down the system. -
I'm considering buying this top end model SU7300 as my only PC. I don't game but run SQL server and IIS web server sometimes with some of my programs.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks my friend. -
Although, I've been using this laptop much more than my Toshiba Tecra which has a T9500 in it. Mainly because the Tecra is almost 7 pounds and the Acer is half the weight. -
Thanks for your quick response John.
Why do you not recommend it as a main PC? Do you find that it slows down a bit at times? -
I've only had this laptop for about 3 weeks and I've not noticed any slow down on any of the programs that I've run. But, again, I haven't thrown any of the "heavier" programs at it.
-
I run a full development stack (Eclipse IDE, Flex Builder, Maven, Subversion, MySQL, & Tomcat) on my 1410 with the SU3500 single-Core. It might take a few seconds longer to compile a project, but I am very happy with it's performance.
I can't see why the 1810T wouldn't suite most users needs. Just my opinion. -
someone here who installed a nex hdd on the 1810T?
I wannt to buy a WD Scorpio Blue or Black.
Maybe a Seagate 5400.6 oder 7200.4
i'll get my 1810T with Su7300 this week so i would like to change the thosiba hdd which is a bit slow i've heard -
Thanks John and Ohio
-
Don`t buy a WD if you`re a noise freak like me
I got a Blue Scorpio and it`s annoyingly noisy. Its like having a second fan working all the time!
Who said the toshiba is slow? Even if you decide to change, i would buy a Hitachi if i were you. Or even better a SSD -like i`m about to do -

But Windows Search (Indexing) is a *huge* culprit in HDD accessing. I rarely use it and if you don't search for files much...

Kermee, how sure are you that Kingston will allow an user upgradable firmware with TRIM support for their 40 Gb SSD with the Intel controller?

Well, my 1810T came in today. I was going to cancel it with J&R because Acer's apparently run by a bunch of jackasses that want to hide their manuals when other companies put them up...but where J&R said it hadn't shipped online, when I called in I was told it would be arriving today. Well, I'll just complain about Acer as a company every chance I get.
But as far as the laptop itself goes, I'm fairly impressed...although I've not really done much with it yet. I recently sold off my Samsung NC10 netbook, and wanted something of similar size, but of much more power...this is definitely bigger than the NC10, but still fits in my old messenger bag I made out of my coat from 8th grade...but it's a tight squeeze.
I'll give more thoughts later, but first I have to make recovery discs, then wipe it out and reinstall 7 Pro or Ultimate (still debating which I'll use). At least it feels fairly sturdy. I don't have fond memories of my wife's old 5100, where my wedding ring (which has nothing on it, and is round so there's no edge) managed to take some paint off the lid. I'll keep hoping it's got more in common with the Ferrari 4005 I used to have than the 5100. -
Sitting on a fence here. Just ordered the 1410-2285. I did a lot of research, but as usually happens with me, it's not until after I order something that I find out more negatives. The 1410-2285, based on what I've read today, only gets about 4 hours battery life.
The other side of the fence is the 1810TZ, which is supposed to get (reportedly) about 7-8 hours. Plus it has bluetooth (not a big deal for me), more memory and a larger hard drive, and the SU4100. Question is, is the 1810TZ worth roughly $150 more?
I should note I'm coming from an EEE PC 1000H.
I'm just going to use it for general use...nothing intensive. I have a bigger laptop for that stuff. Am I fretting over nothing? I have analysis paralysis.
-
Kingston was quoted as saying they would add Auto TRIM support at a later date. The 80GB and 160GB G1 and G2 Kingston versions use the Intel firmware updater to update their rebranded Kingston drives... if that's any indication
Cheers,
Kermee -
Kermee got one more for ya.
Whatis your opinion about the Intel Postville you added in your 1810T? (it was a Postville right?)
I`m seriously thinking of buying one
Cheers -
I want to set everyone's expectations correctly. Adding an SSD to our 1410/1810T/TZ's will make a huge difference. Just don't have the same "speed-up" expectations that you might get from a desktop or a much more powerful notebook. Things will still launch instantly (i.e. IE, Firefox, Thunderbird, Office 2007, etc.) but stuff that's more CPU dependent... The performance gains of having a virtually instant SSD will be less apparent.
Does that make sense?
Cheers,
Kermee
P.S. Cold-boot... times have been cut roughly in half to Windows 7 with the SSD. -
-
What is the discharge rate you are seeing from battery bar when you are idling? And are both pre and post clean-install battery life readings from battery bar? Finally, are those predicted values (especially the post-clean-install), or have you measured them to be true (7+ hours) after the clean-install?
Thanks for the note. -

I'm a happy camper now that I'm getting close to the advertised 8 hours. -

I've taken apart more than my fair share of laptops, and don't need it, but I tend to want to have a copy should I ever have need of it. That's not an issue with my Thinkpads, HPs, and Dell's that I've owned at one time or another.
The fact they're withholding it just pisses me off.
I have mixed thoughts on the 1810T. The plastic film on the lid fell apart, leaving all the sticky stuff on the lid, not on the film.
The Aspire 1810T logo on the bezel wasn't on properly, 1/8" of it was outside of the indentation for it. 3 out of the 6 round rubber bumpers on the lid weren't applied properly.
The keyboard doesn't hold up to my HP or Thinkpad...not a big fan of the Chicklet keyboard...but I'll not pass final judgement until I've had more time to type on it.
Overall, it's a decent system...and certainly a better performer than my NC10, and should give comparable battery life. The screen is bright and sharp, but I wish it were matte. Viewing angles seem to be good enough. It's backing up now, I'll put it through its paces tomorrow. -

As for the build quality... yes, it's not the best at all.. but comparing this 500€ laptop to +1800€ Sony TT/Z or whatever is similar in Lenovo is not fair. I'm glad I have a computer which is very similar in specs to the Vaio TT11 or 21 (SU processor, 11,x", 3-4gb ram, 7+hours battery life) but that costs less than a 1/3 the vaio.. that's nice.
I must say I'd never though I'd have such a small, yet "powerfull" laptop for this price.. too bad I missed a NEW Yellow Vaio TT11 that's was sold at 400€.. by mistake! -
Acer put the manual on the hard drive of my 1410. I wiped it out when I installed Windows 7.
-
what is your super pi 1m score? i get 38 seconds

Actually, since I haven't wiped by 1810t, I don't think Acer left in my hard disk. They left a "user guide" and a "quick reference" in folder called "book" in my 1810t, and there is nothing resembling a disassembly manual
