The G1's are the first gen X25-Ms which use 50nm NANDs while the G2's are the newer ones using 34nm NANDs. IIRC, the G1 will NOT get TRIM command firmware so if you want to use it get the G2 (and wait for the release of TRIM capable firmware for G2. it was once released, but pulled due to some problems ).
Anyone care for an "expensive" sleeve case?![]()
http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10900000_11000318_11000612&products_id=16221
Since I already have a different sleeve (not to mention a $90 case is a bit too expensive for me for a $500 notebook) I wont be getting one, but it does look nice.

Hey guys, I plan on buying an 1810T pretty soon. I'm curious, how well does the SU7300 perform in regards to video encoding? If it's not too slow, I'd use Handbrake to encode videos for my iPod touch every once in a while.
-
I want to check out the build quality of the Timeline 1810T/TZ myself, but none of my local stores carry it.
I recall hearing that it uses the same chassis as some of Acers other laptops? What are they so I can check if my stores have those instead? -
It's very similar the Aspire 751h, but the palm rest and mouse buttons are a lot nicer. Also the battery doesn't stick out the back. I think it's the same keyboard and display. I guess you could also look at other Timelines.

When you recover/reinstall the OS, does it install the bloatware again or is it a "clean install"?
thx -
Are these in such high demand or is the supply severly limited? It seems anyone who gets them is cleared out in heart beat. This without any price cuts or discounts at all. My worry here is the 1820PT's, will they suffer the same fate too?
I am wondering if Acer just seriously underestimated the demand though or if they are putting out thousands of these systems at a time just to be gobbled up in the litteral blink of an eye................. -

Looks like my 1810T is going back to JR. When I leave my laptop unplugged, I lose about 6% battery life per day. I came back from Thanksgiving weekend, having not used the Acer, and the when I started it up it was at less than 90%.
That's the 2nd time it's done that...the first time I thought was a fluke, or a configuration setting...but now that it's done it again, I'm writing it off as a bad battery or something. It goes back today for a refund, since they showed being out of stock... -
-
I'm wondering how that 12 GB partition works and if there is a way to back it up to use it in case your Windows install is so screwed that you can't even run the erecovery tool... -

I mean I charge it up to 100%, turn it off, toss it in my backpack, and come back to it a couple days later and it's at 90% instead of maintaining the charge at a more reasonable 98-100%
I might look at a battery replacement instead of sending it back, as I just found out my wife threw away all the box's internal cardboard stuff, which might incur a restocking fee where there wouldn't normally be one for defective parts. I'd hate to lose $90 because of a piece of cardboard. -
NecessaryEvil is talking about self-discharge. Hibernate and/or shutdown should not cause self-discharge but it does in many laptops. It will if it is in "sleep" as the RAM needs to be kept alive with last state information.
I'm a new user of the 1810T (2 weeks and first post here) and I lose about 4%/day in hibernate or shutdown. I've turned off boot-on-lan in the BIOS, but this the only setting that seems like it would consume power. I have bios 3120.
I had an HP that would lose 10% a day and would be dead in a little over a week. A Samsung netbook I have only loses 2% week.
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas to eliminate self-discharge (without removing the battery) on these wonderful Acer ultralights, let us know... -
Ah, I see now. May I ask then, to be sure the system somehow is not draining have you pulled the batery and after the same time fram experienced the same thing?
I ask as these are usually not just a battery but have internal circuitry in some cases..........
Edit there also could be a self leveler that when off would bring you down somewhat. This is the cells leveling their charge in that case and keeps the wear to an extreme minimum.......... -
Thanks TANWare for the suggestions. I'll try pulling the battery and maybe NecessaryEvil can do the same and with both machines we can confirm the results.
I also was wondering about the "leveling" you suggested, but was not sure what to call it. Is this related to cell balancing that is done during charge of lithium packs but in this case during low/no current draw?
My other thought was that there is a device that remains on even when the unit is turned off. Something like USB or the Webcam. Maybe a driver update will resolve, but I have not gone down that path yet. -

battery is pulled, I'll plug it back in on Monday and see what happens.

The main thing I like about this color is that finger prints don't show up as much as the black version -
I just got my 1810t. Can anyone else hear the harddrive processing requests? I can constantly hear faint crackle/static noises coming from the right side of the notebook. It isn't loud or grinding but annoying. I don want a harddrive that I going bad if that is what it is. Also when I take the computer and move it I hear something on the right side make a noise like when ur moving a vacuum back and forth. Again it's not loud and is a lite sound but still annoying. Neither of these noises are the CPU fan. Should I call acer? Thanks.
-
I had the same sounds with my stock WD Blue Scorpio. What version is yours? It was pretty annoying and a great excuse for a SSD Purchase
@dart22: Loving the Olympic Edition, it is just right for it! Im soooo jealous!
And one last thing:
I noticed something quite weird on my 1810T. When i got the PC on battery windows boots in 30 seconds and everything works instantly. When i got the AC Power connected it boots also in the same time, but then it hangs for about 10-20 seconds. My antivirus loads normaly, Wifi etc but i just cant open anything!
What could be wrong? -
Strange, my new 640 Gb WD Blue edition is death silent in my 1810 TZ and so was the WD 500 Gb Blue edition I had it in before. Actually all of my WD Blue edition harddrives are totally silent in all my notebooks.
-
If you want to check how the hdd is, try reading the S.M.A.R.T info and monitor hdd temp/health status through HDD/SSD utility software. I use one called CrystalDiskInfo. -
Thanks for the responses. I have the stock WD Blue Scorpio. Maybe I should just upgrade because it is annoying? If i hear more people with the same seeking noise, maybe thats the answer. I had a 1410 which was deadly silent as well.... You really think the vacuum noise (faint) is the head retracting?
Thanks -
I'm planning to post a mini-review in the next few days but I thought I might share a "preview" with the local "ZH7" crew.
I've already completed the "photo shoot" which you can review at my Flickr site. This link can also be found in my sig below.
A few samples...

Following up on previous posts: battery pulled from unit for > 24 hours, plugged in and checked battery bar, 0% loss where I would have expected 5-6% if it wasn't removed.
Which means, unfortunately, it's not the battery, and Acer won't be able to help me there. It looks to be an issue with the laptop itself, causing the excessive drain.
Perhaps a BIOS updated will take care of it? -
-
Wish the U.S. had the choice of this color and the seashell white... (bowing to the infinite wisdom of Acer marketing or North America) -
Thx for the tip -
I ran the same test, only in my case, it has been 20 hrs and also saw no drain with the battery removed. So this is not a problem specific to your laptop, but maybe all. I have bios 3120, which is one version back from the latest.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but ACPI keeps a constant standby voltage so when Lan activity (if enabled) or the "soft" power button is pressed, the power supply is turned on to fully to turn on the device. So some device on the standby voltage is consuming current while the laptop is off.
It would be great if other 1810T owners could chime in and tell us if this amount of self-discharge is what they see, and if not, what driver or bios updates were done that possibly alleviated it. TIA. -

No, nothing set for Wake On * in BIOS, and it would have to power on. I shut it down, I don't put it on stand by when it's in my backpack, hibernate is disabled.
Nothing to cause it to happen...but it does anyway. -
I was just about to buy the 1810TZ in Denmark when I realized the OS is 32-bit and not 64-bit. Disappointed, especially when 1810TZs in the states and rest of Europe are 64-bit machines...
What do you guys think, should I buy it? -
Ok, nevermind found one with 64-bit and 4gb ram instead af 32-bit with 3gb ram... and the price is of course a tad higher
-
I have some questions about memory upgrades. My 1410 came with both memory slots taken (2 x 1gb).
I'm running 64-bit Win7-- is 4gb the absolute max that can be used in this system?
Is it possible to use a 4gb stick in one slot and leave the other slot vacant? Has anyone done this? -
How do you recommend flashing the BIOS? Mine is 3115... just double click the exe?
-
Weird thing, I just went to Amazon and J&R and neither comes up in a search for the as1810T, NewEgg shows ETA 12/1/09 !!!!!!!!!!! I prey this isn't the end.............

Isn't the 1810T the single core version?
They are still doing the 1810TZ with plenty of stock.
I know over here in the UK you can buy either an 1810TZ or a 1410 (with single core celeron & smaller battery)
Looking on Amazon.com it seems to be the same over there too?

So I'm about to buy an AS1410-2801 (1.2 dual core, 2gb ram, 160GB) and I have some questions.
1. How easy is it to replace the stock HD? I have a WD Scorpio Blue 640GB internal which was on black Friday special for 85$ on the way, and I want to replace the stock drive with that. Has anyone posted video or images on how to replace the HD? Not a SSD but just regular drive.
2. Is it for sure that the two 1GB sticks come standard as opposed to 1X2GB stick? What is the ideal brand if any for an upgrade to the max 4GB?
3. Windows 7 Home Pro 64Bit is coming loaded on the machine. How would I get Windows 7 off the internal 160GB HD and onto the 640GB? Ideally I want to just open the box, undo some screws, and switch hard drives. Will I need an external optical disc drive? Is a windows 7 disc coming in the box (ordering off newegg)? I've seen people talking about booting windows 7 off a 4+GB flash drive but the ISO is no longer available and I'm running 32 bit Windows XP as it is.
Sorry if I'm not that clear on what I'm trying to do. Thanks to anyone who can help in advance. -
I'm about to buy an 1810T from newegg if they aren't out of stock by tomorrow afternoon, I'm kind of nervous now thought seeing all the noise and battery issues people are having. How many people have had one without any incident?
-
My 1410 came with two 1 GB sticks so had to shell out for 4GB. Sigh.
There are instructions here for removing the disk drive. But I've only removed mine (and replaced it), don't know if the Scorpio fits. (I found the disassembly instructions but can't seem to link to it...keeps timing out)
Good luck. -
Thanks a bunch Mike. Looks like I might try to mount the recovery disc files onto a flash drive, but more likely I'll just get an external disk drive and burn it. Just to ask one more question but your hard drive is a 2.5in/9.5mm correct? The Western Digital Scorpio 640GB is a 2.5/9.5 internal. I'm hoping it will fit fine. If your interested Newegg might still have it for 89$ (regularly 135). -
