My friend will be able to bring me a laptop from the US this Christmas.

Seems like the 1410 with SU2300 for $399 from Amazon is the best value at the moment. Correct?

Er, that doesn't sound right... RAM sticks don't 'add together' to determine RAM speed.

I'm wondering if I should've gotten the ruby red. The blue doesn't seem as bright / pretty as my acer netbook blue was...

I opted for the 1810t for $599 minus Bing cash back which brought it down to $526. I figure the extra $125 for larger battery, faster cpu, more ram, larger hard drive, and bluetooth was worth it.

In that case it makes sense.

For me the bing cashback doesn't work and I'd rather save some weight than have extra battery life.

I've used my gf's 1410 extensively. Other than an obviously superior screen, on day to day tasks it seems equal to my Z! very impressed with the SU2300. Gets better battery life too. Makes my Z feel big and bulky as well :(

Wow it appears everyones issue is with the left mouse button while mine is the right. Weird. I don't know if I should return it. It works fine but is annoying.

I've been trying to hunt down a Cherry Red Gateway EC1436u but I haven't had much luck. Frys.com has the Blue Acer 1410 on sale again for $349. I have to opt for in-store shipping. Funny thing is the store doesn't recognize the sale when I called them up.

I just got a Acer 1810T a week ago. It's the olympic partner edition thats silver in color and thus far I really like it. I've noticed something a little weird with it and I thought I'd run it past others in the forum.

Does anyone else with the SU7300 CPU notice it overclocks itself? My CPU is consistently running at 1595mhz according to both CoreTemp64 and CPU-Z. I can post screenshots if requested but I'm not doing anything to the CPU, it seems to spend most of the time at this speed and only some of the time at 1296mhz where it should be...

I was very much under the impression that speedstep (which this CPU supports) only underclocks the cores to save on power. Isn't the ability to self overclock the "turbo mode" functions? Further to that however, I really didn't think that self overclocking was utilized in any CPU's under the Core i5/i7 systems.

I guess I'm totally offbase here huh?

Infact, doesn't this page confirm that "turbo boost technology" isn't enabled for this CPU?

Turbo Boost will be on the next gen of processors (Arrandale). I think Speedstep can overclock the processor as well as underclock it.

Years ago, I briefly worked for Intel.

My understanding is that Speedstep will only REDUCE the clock speed of a processor to increase battery life while unplugged, then ramp back up to full speed when plugged in.

The overclocking/Turbo Boost thing is, as you note, a new/next generation thing.

Speed step has been around since the P3, if not earlier.

Finally broke down and ordered a Sapphire Blue one from Frys.com. I'm picking it up tomorrow in store. CA almost kills the deal though ($30.27 tax + $8 recycling fee).

Nice. Will that involve hooking up a mini PCIe slot and then inserting the module into that? Or does the 1410 already have a spare one?

I'm thinking of adding a 3G module to my 1810T and I'm wondering if it's similar.

    Hello everyone,

I've been reading this thread a lot, and decided to get an 1810 model the other day. I think it will be just what I need.

I ordered a blue 1810 TZ from Amazon. I wanted to get an 1810 T, but they were out of stock everywhere at the time. I also think I might've preferred black, but I don't mind blue.

QUESTION: What do you all think of the 1810TZ? Is it much worse than the 1810T in real life usage? I don't think I will need the XP virtualization. But I wonder how much difference the 4GB RAM will make over the 3GB RAM? Can anyone give me some examples of the difference?

Well, I hope the 1810TZ was a decent buy for me. I paid $549, free shipping, no tax. It's slated to arrive here next wednesday (12/16).

It's an error. The programs read out Super LFM wrong. This is the lowest speed.

"Being increasingly conscious about improving battery life, Intel has introduced a number of new power saving features. When the notebook is in a lower power state, the front side bus can be dynamically throttled back to reduce the core voltage, enabling the chip to enter a lower power active state known as Super LFM."
    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2007/05/09/intel_santa_rosa_mobile_platform/1

You won't notice the difference, except for some 3d games that can benefit from dual channel memory.

Well that's good , since I don't really play games on my computer much these days, just some simple games and emulators on occasion.

I read that the 1810TZ shares the RAM with the graphics card, as much as 1.7GB(?!), so that concerns me, since that wouldn't leave much for Windows 7. I'm hoping it shares on a dynamic basis, so there's at least 2GB free most of the time for the OS? I won't be happy if I have to buy a 2GB stick to bring it to 4GB, since that will basically make the TZ cost as much as a T, but without the bonus of the slightly better CPU.

I mostly use Firefox, media playback and basic apps like Open Office - mainly just want something faster than my EeePC 1000H, which is infuriatingly slow sometimes.

    Thanks.

I wonder if intels graphics card can even pump out enough graphics for more than a GB of ram, I doubt it.

Windows 7 64bit runs good on 2gb ram. It runs awesome in fact, just as good as Vista with 2gb. This gb thing people are talking about...don't worry about it. Next year, buy an SSD + 2gb ram when they are on discount..that will be your 1 year upgrade for your little gem.

How difficult/expensive is it to change a 1410 with German QWERTZ keyboard to a US QWERTY International keyboard?

I also ordered the sapphire 1410 from Frys.com for in-store pickup yesterday. It was $8 recycle for for a total of $388.xx.

Thankfully, I noticed no keyboard flex. When I played with the model in store, it had a significant amount of flex. I also ordered the bmc92046NMD 2.1 bluetooth module from ebay for $20.99.

I plan on making recovery dvds, and playing with the install for a while. When the bluetooth module arrives, I'll install it and a 60GB vertex SSD that I currently have in my netbook. I'll do a clean install of win7, hopefully having learned something from playing with it.

My first impressions are the the keys are huge. I'm used to the chiclet keyboard on the Asus 1000HE now, so that is part of it. Also, there isn't much space between the keys. It seems like the keys are oversized. I'm sure I'll get used to it, just like I got used to the small keys on the netbook.

I also picked up the red 1410 for my wife for christmas. I'm looking forward to tweaking both of them.

I you look at all of the postings, and there are a ton of them, in the various 1410/1810 threads, you'll see that there is actually very few complaints. I got one of the early US models and mine has been perfect. It's not a $2k machine, but the build quality on is above average in my opinion.

Go take a look at the Asus UL20a thread. Very few owners and they probably have more complaints in that little thread than you'll find in this one.

Check you're confirmation email - I think mine said that I had to pick it up by close of business that day. I just checked prices and it looks like it went back up to $399 at frys.com.

For what its worth, my wife has had a 15.4" Acer for 18 months with no complaints or problems. I only hope for these to last 2 years or so anyway...

Just so you know I think the 1410 can do 3G already. There is an empty SIM card slot right in the battery socket, remove your battery and look at the socket carefully if you have a 1410. The 1810 I don't know if it has the same housing. I'm guessing it's as simple as sticking your active cell phone SIM card in. As for the bluetooth module the slot is already there and empty on 1410, I think it's a mini PCIe slot right next to the WiFi card.

Speaking of a SIM slot, what's the cheapest internet only data plan I can get and use with the 3G slot in my 1410? I'm thinking prepaid or pay as you go as I'd only use it if I had to and I didn't have WiFi or my Palm Pre doesn't can't do it.

Let me ask kind of a noob question, but if I pay for the recovery disks, how many times can I use them to restore the computer? Is there a limit to how many times windows will reactivate on the exact same machine?

I like to reinstall windows periodically to get optimal performance, and I assume that a restore is practically the same as a clean install? Or am I wrong?

Too bad i dont have the chance of buying a SSD right now...
Isnt really the vibrations, but more the humming constantly noise, i managed to stop the "clicking" noise by installing NHC (great software btw) and placing Power Management Control of HDD to 254, but i thing it will drain faster the batery this way...

    Bummer !

can you explain in laymens terms what nhc and the power management control of hdd will do? have you noticed significant differences in battery life with this?

edit- it doesnt seem to work with my OS, but im still curious
