Look closely at that card slot,
and you will find the internal socket is missing.
Never soldered onto the motherboard.
Much info including photos about installing the socket either here,
or at the Tweaks Forum.
Definitely not for beginners.
There was a 3G-ready model available for sale in Germany.
A forum member who purchased that model commented here.
Sorry, but cannot locate the previous posts due
to poor search capabilities here. I think NBR only searches
thru individual posting titles, which is useless.
-
I have know idea how to find the comments that are buried some in this thread. yus9 is right, check out the timeline tweaks thread. -
I missed this compilation of information.
Thanks for the link.
For the lazy, here is an excerpt...
"Due to the fact that Acer has kept all additional costs for the non-3G 14/1810T(Z)s to a minimum, there is no end-user* provision for adding a WWAN PCIe mini-card yourself, as said models are lacking not only the SIM-card interface, but the antenna and even the necessary PCIe mini-card socket I found this all very annoying considering that Dell ships their "non-3G" XPS line with all-of-the-above so that all you need to do is toss in the WWAN module...
*Tbh, there's one fellow who managed this amazing feat by actually soldering on the appropriate socket, adding the antenna & SIM interface. But this mod is not for the faint at heart...
The last difference is the physical switch located just underneath the indicator lights. Although everyone has a WLAN (WiFi) switch and (most likely) a secondary switch for Bluetooth, the 3G model's switch can be toggled in two directions; left-side toggles WWAN and right-side toggles WLAN." -
mhh - how do I use the search function to look for individual comments in this thread?
My problem is that I have a 1080 full HD movie which does not play smoothly on my 1810TZ. But having read this amazing entire thread in the last days and continuing to watch the latest postings I know there are a few postings which relate to the smooth playback of HD stuff...
Searching for '1080' or 'full hd playback' gave back no results???
At the moment I tried to use VLC player.
Do you have any special software recommendations for me to use? Also - what are the general power settings to have full power for movies (for example: is it important to be plugged in or on battery, use energy saver mode or not,...).
I do not understand how this cpu power throttling really works?
Thanx in advance for any help!

I have tried ten times to find somewhere with more info on popular Ram to upgrade for the 1410 Dual Core with no avail. The search keeps saying nothing in regards to Ram or memory searches yet ive gone through like 100 pages and read slight talk about memory but nothing exactly what I need to know. Even mentions of it handling 8GB?!
So anyone care to chime in? I read basically to go with 800MHZ DDr2 but any brands you all recommend etc? -
The microphone on my 1810tz makes a continuous humming noice when I record, talk on skype msn etc.It is like it's recording the fan along with my voice.Does anyone has the same problem?Any suggestions?

The German magazine Chip published the best notebooks up to 13".
Guess who's on the number one spot beating Sony Z and Macbook Pro

Is there any 3g model available yet? And does anybody know some better recording program for acer webcam, it takes 5gb videos in 20min, so it is not perfect software for taking capture of dog for 9hours (not enought space in hdd)
I tought that video would take much less space cause 2h hd movie takes ony 9gb and that webcam ain't no hd-cam
And if someone knows if there is pcie port that whats in it and could I put 3d modem in it? I can sacrifice wlan and other for that if its necessary
-
in your signature I read the 'Acer Timeline 1810TZ' which you own as I understand ... this model has a 3G-Modem built in...
-
Cant get sim in simslot cause there is no slot in my tz, only symbol of it.
and i dont have acer 3g connection manager
That slot is sealed in my Tz. -
I'm seriously interested in picking up one of the 1810's for traveling. I see that is has a built in card reader and indicates that it reads SD cards. Is it just SD or does it handle SDHC as well? I'd like to use this to backup digital pictures as I travel, but my camera uses an SDHC card. I have an external card reader that I currently use, but it would be nice to be able to leave it at home and not worry about it. I'm guessing no since it doesn't specify SDHC, but on the other hand, I would find it surprising that a new device like this wouldn't read SDHC cards.
Thanks. -
How big is that hc card? I have 8Gt Sd card, dunno is it sdhc but I see it when I go home, but it works in my Tz.
From wikipedia:
Capacity
SD: 1 MB to 4 GB
SDHC: 4 GB to 32 GB
SDXC: 32 GB to 2 TB
So it should work fine! -
The 1810tz can be sold with or without 3G module.
-
Yes and I have that old cheap lazy one that don't have it
So is it possible to instal 3g with acers stock 3g parts? Anyone have asked price for them from acer service?
-
I can confirm that the 1410 uses SDHC cards so I would guess that he 1810 would also. I have a 4gb sdhc micro in an sd adapter that works great. Hope that helps. I too would find it crazy if a new laptop didn't come with sdhc compatibility. I can also confirm that it gets pretty good speed since it is always asking me if I want to use the card for W7 Ready Boost.

Oh my god. Are personal Messages in this forum disabled?? Strange!
@Nuuser
I really hope that you read that. Have you been using Ableton Live like you did with your former PC so far? Does the CPU limit? Did you manage to perform more tests like this one from the Ableton forum?
I'm really desperate and torn right now. From all I've read I think the 1410 or 1810 are the perfect machines for my everyday PC-work and nice little multimedia systems. But music Production with Ableton-Live is the only application left that demands pretty much CPU power... And I neither want to give up my hobby nor can I afford a second Workstation with enough Power... -
You'll love the 1810t for traveling. I used to take my Dell E6400 as a back up, but now I have more faith in the Acer and it's my only travel laptop.
-
Loving my 1410 but still thinking about some upgrades and mostly looking for thoughts on good ram. Anyone wanna chime in?
-
Hey johnw91498, what a coincidence... I'm now hardly thinking of either buying the small Acer or the Dell E6400. As I said three postings before I'll only need real CPU-Power for Ableton Live. Of course I would need an external big screen for comfortable work with the Acer.
Could you imagine replacing your Dell E6400 with the Acer (maybe equipped with a nice SSD) using it as your only system (at home with an external screen).
What would you have to give up without the Dell?
Thanks in advance!! -
I sometimes use it as an HTPC with the HDMI. My tv scales it perfectly. -
These are the only two upgrades ill consider (next yr when prices are low)
4gb 800mhz ram
A nice 150+ GB ssd...when prices are low. -
-
Not generally available even in Germany, where it has been sighted.
Link to an informative post by a member/owner of the 3G model.
So let's make it clear.
There are no 3G-enabled 1410, 1810TZ or 1810T models in user's possession at this time, exception for a few 1810TZ from Germany. Perhaps 20 or 50 or 300.
The slot you see behind the battery does not have
a connector soldered onto the motherboard.
No internal antenna is installed,
and no hardware switch exists at the front surface of the notebook. -
RAM: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1731081
Regarding 1080p, VLC is not an efficient player. Media Player Classic - Home Cinema is the fastest player and supports DXVA for offloading HD content onto the IGP. -
Not sure what you mean by "not efficient", but VLC plays a huge variety of files without any plugins, extensions, or other garbage, a lot more than Media Player Classic, I believe. -
I have just purchased a Acer 1810TZ. Thank you for this thread - picked up a lot of great hints.
I haven't read all 100 pages so hope this contribution hasn't been posted before.
This cover (barely) fits the 1810tz:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14660
Positive:
+ Price
+ Durable
+ No zippers
Negative:
- Tight fit (designed for 10" netbook)
- Smells VERY bad the first week
I haven't got any affiliation with the company - just want to share this tip - I mean where are you going to find a cover for <$5 with free shipping?! -
Congrats on the new Timeline! Please post your impressions of the 1810TZ. I have one ordered and it should arrive next week. I'm just wondering how well it performs out of the box, and also thoughts on the build quality and screen quality.
Thanks. -
I had an Intel X25-M in the 1000HE - this drive is now 'migrated' to the 1810TZ. I am running Windows 7 64-bit home premium. After trying a SSD, I would never go back to a normal HDD. Buying tip: look for IOPS! This is what matters in day-to-day operations. And then you'll buy a (rebranded) Intel SSD after looking at the current (dec. 2009) reviews.
1810 impressions:
Positives:
+ Speed (it is noticably faster than a 1000HE. A HUGE improvement!)
+ Noise (fanless most of the time with 1810tray)
+ Screen resolution. It makes a world of difference having a 'real' resolution compared to the 1024x600
+ Screen size. The extra 1.6" does make a difference
+ Size of keyboard
Negatives:
- Battery - I am only getting ~5h of battery. Intel 4100 cpu, wireless, bluetooth, 5600mah battery. Compared to ~6-7h on 1000he.
- Noise. Rattling noise when the fan actually turns on. Shaking (!) the computer resolve the rattle...
- Color of charger. It is black - my 1810 is white
- Size of power cable. Well.... I am sure the cable won't overheat, but it takes up 2x as much space as my 1000he power cable. -
For those of you who have been searching for a way to easily watch Blu-ray discs in Media Center off your hard drive on your 1410 or 1810, here is a guide. This would probably work fine over gigabit LAN also but I wouldn't try it over 802.11(n) wireless. I have tried PDVD, MPC-HC, Divx Labs, Shark007, and several others without great success. So, here is what you do. To preface the instructions I have the 1410 (SU3500 CPU) running Windows 7 x86 (32 bit) with 4 gb memory. My memory usage is typically at about 1.4gbs so you should still be able to do this with only 2gb. By the way, I have tried Windows 7 x64 (64 bit) without success but the new release of CoreAVC 2.0 and Haali's Splitter will fix this problem. Hopefully it will be released soon. Also feel free to use the trial versions of this software first to make sure you are satisfied. Also you will probably have to remove the PDVD8 2ch software that came with your computer first. It is junk anyway. It doesn't play mounted iso, .mkv files, H.264 files (Blu-ray), and is limited to 2 channel audio output unless you pay the price for the retail version upgrade. Even then it will not play mounted iso discs or .mkv files.
-Get Anydvd HD (this takes the encryption off your disc) There are other programs to do this but I have never used them.
-Use MakeMKV to turn the disc into an mkv file (just select the largest file or you will turn the previews into mkvs also) Plan on the files being huge. 18-35gb. I don't have an external blu-ray drive for my 1410 so I do this on my HTPC.
-Get CoreAVC (this is the best decoder, inexpensive, and works!) Use default settings during install unless you know what you are doing
-CoreAVC will automatically load Haali's splitter to split the single file .mkv file container so that CoreAVC can decode the H.264 files
-Download and install AC3Filter lite for x86 or full for x64 (I am currently using lite) This program is required because many files will not play in MPC 12 or W7MC with sound. You may need to tweek this software a little to get your sound just right for your setup. Especially, if you are sending the video to a TV via HDMI.
-Place your .mkv file in a folder in your media library with the metadata
-It will now play from within Media Center. I have done this with GIJoe & Transformers 2 and others with great success.
I do have the video hang for a millisecond occasionally but you have to be understanding. This is a single core (I would bet the dual core laptops don't have this problem) with a GS45 GPU. If it were an Nvidia GPU it wouldn't have a problem. Anyway, hope it works for you. It sure looks awesome on my little 1410. -
EDIT:
Found a killer deal on 4GB kit on NewEgg. I have read we should go with 800MHZ instead of 667MHZ thoughts anyone?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251 -
MPC-HC plays HD content better than VLC, with lower CPU utilization. You can also configure it with AC3Filter which gives you control over the audio. -
Has a fix been discovered for getting rid of the vibration/rattling noise coming from the fan on the 1810t's?
-
Thanks to all for the responses on the card reader. Glad to hear it will read SDHC. I'm surprised that Acer doesn't make that clear.
-
EDIT: Could anyone who owns one comment on the fan noise? I tried doing a thread search for "fan", "noise", and some other stuff but its not returning anything... -
My fan is not bad while it's running on the battery, but runs hard while it's plugged in and charging. (In Linux)

anyway, so far i have not been able to do the formal test from the ableton forum, and likely wont be able to until next weekend after finals.
but, i did play with it and ableton a lot during the first weekend that i had it, and i am quite pleased. i had been working with ableton on an oldd desktop for sometime, so i compared the benchmark score of that computer with the su2300, and the su2300 had a score almost twice of my old desktop. i would say, as a rough estimate, i am able to run about twice as many tracks with vsts and effects on the acer than i could on my dekstop. so, my advice, if you have been using ableton on some computer, try to look up its passmark scores and compare it to the processors of the acer models. this should give you a rough estimate of how it will perform for you.
i have yet to try it with any external soundcards or even midi controllers, mostly i work "in the box" and make electronic music. of course, the cpu limits at some point, and probably far before a more expensive computer. but for the way i work, i believe i can create and finish a song just fine, certainly if you are smart with vsts, effects, and freezing tracks when needed. you might be able to get a little more power from another computer for the same price, but i dont believe in a package as portable as this.
good luck, if you can wait, i'll try to do the test from the ableton forum next weekend... if not, try to compare the passmark scores and decide if it'll work for you from that. -
have you noticed a very small beep when you put your ear close to ventilation slit?

Where is there a solution to the fan noise problem in the first post of that thread? I have read others have had similar problems. Also a search on the internet turns up the same problems. I saw it being talked about on here awhile back, like there may have been a solution.
-
Towards the middle of the first post: (If you want the actual post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5254807#post5254807)

Thank you.
The pictures by lepton are not good enough for me to follow. Does anybody have any links to walkthroughs, or any other insight on this issue? -
I also used electrical tape to "soundproof" my Fan , i must say it helped but not that much.
And after all, its a fan guys, it is supposed to make some noise! -
I do also use an external Sound Interface with ASIO support...
You know what makes me wonder though: Another one from Ableton Forum said:
"Ableton Live CPU Meter % - 78-84
2 ) Laptop/Desktop? Make/Model? - HP 2510p 12in LED
3 ) Operating System? - Win7 RC
4 ) Ableton Live version? Live 8.0.4
5 ) CPU Make, Model, and Speed? - Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.2ghz
6 ) Amount of Ram? - 2GB 667Mhz
7 ) Soundcard (and driver version if you know it)? - Onboard running
8 ) Hard Disk Drive Speed (if you know)? 4200 IDE
9 ) Number of playback tracks? 4"
As you see he has a comparable System and a much worse result. Any idea about that? -
These threads get so big it becomes impossible to find things. So unless someone who is qualified can track and update the OP, they become worthless. We are seeing right now. People asking questions about things that have been beaten to death, but can't find it buried in the 1000's of replies. Pretty soon, Acer will update these machines and it will be time for a new thread.
Anyway, I have tried to put the most useful links in the OP to make it easier for everyone. -

I just purchased a 1810tz. It's great sofar.
I'm considering getting a cheap SSD or WD5000BEVT.
Any suggestions for 64GB-80GB SSDs around 150 euro available in Europe?
Edit: started thread here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=442155 -
to clear things up, my test was done on an acer 1410 with su2300 processor and the stock 2 gigs of ram, stock hard drive, window 7 home premium 64 bit, and aero turned off, and the asio driver -
Just purchased the 1410-2285. I am having wireless issues though. Two other laptops I have run a consistant 130mpbs..this is jumping all over the place, occassionally to 130 then can go down to 28..and sometimes dropping connectivity. Has anyone had the same problem? I know my router is good since the two other laptops have never had this problem? Any help would be really appreciated...thanks.
