It is shiny but not like the new laptops you are seeing now... My hands have been all over it but, unlike newer darker systems, you cannot see all kinds of fingerprints and whatnot....looks nice and clean.

The 1340 I sold for this was the abs worse for fingerprints and handmarks...

Now I just have to decide if I want to get a 1410 with the su2300 for $449 or an 1810t with a Core 2 duo for $679.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

:p It was a question directed at all the forum members. :p Well, I do "light gaming" (as in, games from 2002 or older), occasional dvd movie, web browsing etc.
I think I might go with the more expensive core 2 duo model, should last a bit longer performance-wise. :)

One thing I like....been on battery power for the past 4 hours and 23 minutes and the battery still says I have 51% left with a remaining time of 4hr and 1 minute.

Heck...happy with this battery time already.

This is why I'm starting to love CULV notebooks. That and as you said, it runs very cool. I just wish there wasn't a "shortage" of the Acer models (and therefore more expensive ).

I just hooked up my netbook to a new 26" Samsung HDTV and I absolutely love it. I might stick to the standard DVI over HDMI since I had some issues with HDMI output on a TV. I couldn't get it to properly output over 1366x768 with HDMI, but I had no problems with 1920x1200 with DVI.

Divx preview I think is causing me to get black bars on side of screen when watching some movies. Is there anyother free player/codecs I can use instead that give video acceleration?
I realized if I had a memory card in the laptop while I'm watching a movie from the harddrive, cpu % will more than double from around it's usual %20, and go to around %50! Don't leave memory card in card reader I guess. Will a firmware/bios fix this? Seems kinda lame.

I have the same quandary, but I think I'm going to get the 1810t at amazon as I have a few gift certificates from xmas to get the price down a little. I figure it'll cost me a little more but I'll be happier with it longer...

However it's pre-ordered, so I can still change my mind...

Unless you need BT, larger HD, dual (2.4 and 5GHz) wireless channel, and 4GB preinstalled RAM, the 1410/SU2300 is the best bang for the buck.

I have both, and I can sincerely say that if I had to do it again, I would have simply gotten two 1410s (one for my media center, the other, for work).

Has anyone had any issues with their VGA-out signal? I have an acer 1410 and I had set up the power profile on my comp to do nothing when I close the lid, so that when at home I can use the laptop on my monitor. If I set up the display on the vga-out, the signal is fine while the laptop's lid is open. As soon as I close the lid, the display is initially there but after a few econds I get intermittent on and off blinking of the display on my monitor. I don't know if this is a software issue, but it's kind of a pain to always have the lid open

Restore should cover the registry too, but to be sure make a backup of the registry in regedit. Then you're covered.

Can someone recommend the best way to cut the trackpad area out of the Acer 1810T laptop? I'm thinking of using a dremel tool, but I'm unsure about the blade/disc type to use to get an accurate cut on the touchpad area without cracking the plastic. I'm thinking about scoring it with a hot xacto knife first, then cutting it with the dremel, then sanding it down to fit the LCD i'm going to install it its place.

I really don't want to mess up and cause a crack outside the trackpad area.

On a side note, anyone want to buy a genuine Acer BCM92046 bluetooth 2.1+EDR module from my Acer 1810T? I won't be using it after this mod.

With respect to that quoted study, there seems to be ALOT of controversy and bad feedback. I couldn't imagine a Win7 64bit boot time like that and Vists much the same. In moving to Vista 64bit quite some time ago, my full start time was about 24 seconds and now with Win 7 64bit....its pretty much the same. I have always found 32 bit slower but, moreso, the systems start and shut down times change drastically if you have reinstalled the OS to remove the bloat found in fresh new systems.

I am sure the ssd plays a part in that as well.

As far as battery consumption, last night was the second night with this system, both of which I got over 8 hours play time on a single charge.

I intalled internal bluetooth module yesterday as instructed from here. it works great, and connected to my phone, mouse. however, i found that the bluetooth LED indicator keeps blinking and blinks fast. it is kind of annoying expecially at night.
is it normal? or is there any way to get it solid on when connected? at lease not blink so fast?
I spent several hours searching this forum, and found a few other guys asked same question but no one answered.

Not bad feedback. I did back to back fresh installs on my ssd and could easily see the 2-3 second difference in boot time. Not the first laptop I've seen this happen either. 64bit needs to load the compatibility layer for 32bit so obviously it will take a hair longer.

You should really just run whatever your main apps run. If you're just surfing the net, you most likely have a 32bit browser. ms office, 32bit. mpchc, probably faster with the 64bit version if thats what you actually downloaded.

    Hi party people,

I found the 1410 locally for $430. This is the one with the Celeron 743, 2GB Ram, Win7 Home and 250GB HD. Is this the best price? After tomorrow it will be $50 more. Does it come with a restore disc? Thanks.

The notebook comes with a utility to make your own restore disks. Of course, since it doesn't have a DVD/CD, you'll have to attach your own external drive. There are discussions here about using a USB stick to accomplish the same thing. I just plugged in an external DVD and made the 3 disks.

Fry's in my local area (San Jose) has the 1410 as your described it for $379. You might want to check www.frys.com.

    Cheers.

I have a couple of quick questions.

I purchased a 1410-2497 that has the celeron 743, I am going to return for a 1410-2801 with a dual core SU2300(I haven't opened it yet) The biggest demand will be high-def video. So I am assuming that the 1.2 Ghz dual core will be faster over all than the 1.3 single core. Am I corect in this?

Secondly, would I be better off upgrading to 4 GB ram rather than going to an SSD drive? Has anyone looked into the trade of between the 2?

    Thanks

The dual core is better for HD.

This is more subjective. I've upgraded my 1410 to 4GB RAM as soon as I got it.
An SSD will provide more overall speed, but it can get really expensive quick.
It's a question of capacity vs. speed (compared to HDD) and the consequential cost of that speed.

People here who have opted for the SSD are very happy about it. Certainly, prices have been steadily dropping.

I have recently splurged for an SSD. Again, this is not for the budget conscious.

    Thanks for your reply,

I know I will probably spending almost as much for Ram and SSD as I am going to spend for the whole computer. I just want the best bang-for-the-buck-performance in the smallest reasonable form factor possible. I don't need a big SSD, 64GB would be more than adequate. BTW, It may seem like a stupid question but are smaller SSD's in the same family slower? I now that can happen in HDD's because of the areal density. Does not seem to be a factor in SSD's in my logic because the chips(and the interface)should be the same just more or less of them.

I am also getting a core i5-520 Sony machine with Blu-ray(1600*900 res). Rather than have a one-size try to do it all machine I have opted to specialize.

I got rid of my Lenovo Atom machine last week. The screen res was just too confining, Oh yes and the turtle speed....

My windows sticker is peeling off too much. I'm going to try to remove it later and keep it elsewhere for safekeeping. Only part i'm worried about is the silver authentication strip.

Best bang for the buck is the intel 80GB, which can be had for $230-250 on eBay. You want G2, which has TRIM (google it).

Size isn't the issue, it's how much you're willing to spend.

I just finished reading the most recent review by Laptop Magazine. They tested the HP Mini 311 and the Acer 1810T. They said that the Mini 311 is better for movie playback and games.

    http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptop/hp-mini-311.aspx

    http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptop/acer-aspire-1810t.aspx

I was set to buy the 1410 until I read these reviews. The Mini 311 and the 1410 cost about the same. I might need to re-consider.

Cover the whole thing with clear packing tape then carefully trim around it with a razor blade. Then use a hair dryer to warm it up an you gently pull and it should peel off in one piece.

The mini 311 has a single core Atom. That alone should tell you to stay away.

The 1410 is good enough for movies. But if games is your bread and butter, the Asus 1201N might be a better fit. it has dual core and ION.

Are you in Canada??? I could be wrong but had heard the Olympic model was in Canada only...

I understand the SU9400 hasn't been released yet in the US however has in Canada...

Are you happy with the Olympic version?
How does it behave in terms of heat and noice ?

I will be using the notebook mainly for internet, email and office applications

Congrats, it's a nice color / CPU package you got there, Les

What? You gave away your 1330??? Nooooo  Well ok, he is your son, after all... lol :p

Nope, not me, I kept my M1330 - my 1810TZ is sweet, but it's not a replacement for my 1330, at least not with my SU4100... :-/ The 1330 can still put out better frames during playback of complex videos, like this Anime w/"soft karaoke" effects (no, I don't do karaoke, but this one mkv is the perfect benchmark)!

Enjoy it and let us know what it can do :)

Not at all....in fact I don't think I have come under 8 hours on a charge yet. Yesterday I ran it completely bare and was just under 10.

Similarly, I unplug it in the am and am still at 97/98% at 4 when I return

    AJ...

There is no aluminum as it is only a brush aluminimum coloured cover and palmrest. It is hard to tell and very well constructed IMHO.

    traveller,

The 1330 is still in the family and is a freebee in any case. Last summer Dell offered a free upgrade replacement to the M1340 and never asked for the M1330 back ....it just sat here for months. In the end I sold the 1340 and got this. I tried to stay with Dell and go fr the 11x but the trackpad issues were worrysome. This seems to be the only release of this size thusfar with all the parts I was looking for included...

Gotta admit its nice not dragging the cord around after a few hours.

I'm not sure if this is the write thread, but I did some research a few months ago for a friend and he settled on the 1410, which he is very happy with and I'm a big fan as well.

Now I'm in the market for a Netbook and was wondering is this still "the" netbook to get?

I don't care about gaming really, all I want is the ability to watch HD movies from normal media files and youtube/hulu.

I know having a dual core will make general computing smoother, but if all I care about is watching HD movies, would a single core be adequate?

Are there any other models out there that fit my criteria that are currently out or in the very near future?

You are probably better of throwing out your price range or moving to the appropriate area for seeking a new system. Even a single core CULV is a huge step up from the Atom systems. It seems that every day I am seeing people curse after buying Ion systems and then failing to be impressed with the obvious performance loss.

Why would anyone buy an Atom when now we can get a CULV for the same or close price. Before Christmas I picked up a Gateway 11.6 for my son with the single core 1.4, I believe, and he tells me that he is playing HD content without difficulty. That system came with 3gb ram.

Price is everything though....u may find what u want in a dul core for what u r expecting to pay for a single.

    Ditto here, Les!
That's also why I went for the 1810TZ and I looked at quite a few in this class before making my move. Aside from some OEM SW/driver glitches I'll hopefully work out, I'm thrilled with this puppy ;)

Whats the glitch exactly...and impressed with your hunt from the other thread...we both did alot of background on what we wanted.

We may just be the two top authorities on the reality of the difference between the Ion/Atom system and CULV. I am still seeing so many buying Atom systems only to either take them back or put them up for sale...

    Hi all

I am having a tough time finding an internal bluetooth module for my as1410... the only ones available here in India are cheapo/generic external modules with IVT Bluesoliel and a "MAC" id of 11:11:11:11:11 ( i guess they're fake).... iam currently doing some research whether there could be a way to mod one of these to fit the internal bluetooth connections...... any inputs will be deeply appreciated.....

hi, I just ordered the 1810tz from CircuitCity.com (15% bing cash back for those looking). Anyway my question is about routers. The specs say it comes with a Draft-N wifi card. Are there problems with any N-Routers? Should I get a specific router?

    Thanks.
