Thx Les, glad you think my thread could be of use to netbook "shoppers" :)

As for that glitch... well it's turning into a pastime, tbh... In a nutshell, I'm getting random stutter, pops & clicks when playing back HD video... of any kind (be it divX wmv, or H.264, etc.). If you check out the link above, you'll see I've tried just about everything to determine the exact reason but unfortunately I'm not quite there yet... :(

You can take the usb data lines from the internal mini-pcie connector and +5v/GND from various points on the motherboard (check the first page for info) and connect the external generic module directly. The range might be crap unless you shunt the wires to an unshielded part of your chassis.

However, I would personally recommend that you purchase a BCM92046 module from ebay for roughly $10-$20 with shipping.

Here's a link to an ebay "Best Offer" for the module without the 8pin cable for $13.

Here's a link to one with the cable included for $19

Thank you, but if it were as simple as as you put it, my laptop would have got the internal module ages ago :) . My problem is that paying in dollars from here is not possible for me and Ebay-India or any other online retailer in India does not have a compatible module.... none of the "Offline" stores have them either.... The AS1410 has not yet been introduced here although the other timelines have been.. acer themselves are unable to provide me with a module.... that is why i have resigned to trying to put an external module inside it....

I bought the Acer 1810T model in Dec. but had to return it. There was a loud vibrating noise coming from around the area of the fan.

I have heard that this is a problem that is found often on this laptop. Somebody on this forum even opened it up, and if I can recall, said that it was caused by the heatsink resting on the fan casing and there was metal to metal contact that caused the noise.

Is this a common issue? I really want to give this Acer another go, its absolutely perfect for what I need, but I don't want to go through another return.

Also, I noticed that they are back in stock with a higher price tag around the net, but with a different model number. Specs are the same, but I was wondering if anybody has found any changes otherwise? Maybe addressing some common issues?

    Thanks!

No problem here with my 1810T-

Check out post#2804 by Yus9 (right above your post). I wish I could have gotten my 1810 at that price.

Does anybody know how to remove the screen cover? I'd like to paint my glossy fingerprint-black cover in a different color, but i can't figure out how the damn thing is attached to the screen bezel.

http://shark007.net/ Use these drivers for windows 7 7/64bit. You need to download the regular 32bit drivers, and then 64bit drivers separately if you are 64bit. Then check out your video

Why not get a vinyl stick-on cover from sgpstore, decalgirl, etc. Easy to apply, removable, and available in a variety of colors and patterns.

I received an 1810TZ on Friday and I'm having the same problem. Sometimes the cursor moves wildly, sometimes it doesn't move at all and sometimes it moves to the dead center of the screen. I installed the latest drivers from Synaptics site and the problem seems worse now.

    kaerf14,
Did you have any luck solving your issue?

That could be a option.. but how is the durability of those vinyl covers? Do the edges peel off when i carry the laptop with me every day?

I was able to get 5.1 sound. Originally I tried just downloading divx preview for video and ac3 for audio. With just these codecs AC3 would not start when using wmp/wmc so I got no surround sound. There may be a hack to force AC3 to start but I didn't bother. Next I downloaded wmpc-HC. Using this player the AC3 start icon tray started and I was able to watch content and get true 5.1 DTS sound. Output to my 1080p display you could tell divx video acceleration was working because my 1080p mkv's were only around %20 on my su2300 cpu. With just these codecs installed I should mention that when viewing 16:9 content in wmp/wmc there were vertical black bars shown on either side of picture. This made using wmp for video useless unless it was 2.35 aspect anamorphic ratio content. This displayed correctly but of coarse there was no 5.1 sound. The video playback on all 3 players wmp/wmc/wmpc-hc although not choppy exactly, did not seem smooth to me or very pleasent to watch So I uninstalled divx/ac3 and installed shark codecs. Now WMP/WMC play all content fine with no black bars and 5.1 DTS sound. I notice shark let's you use either AC3 or ffdshow for spdif. I don't know if one is better to use than the other. The video now seems to be playing a little more smooth for me then when I only had divx but now when outputting 1080p mkv's to my 1080p screen cpu goes to %100 and gets jerky. Guess this laptop requires acceleration for 1080p. Should I download divx again to get the acceleration? When I had it before even though cpu was very low the picture still didn't seem very smooth. Will updating any drivers on this laptop help? I haven't updated any yet but when I ran acer update program it didn'tfind anything.

That's a good question. They adhere pretty well, but my laptop resides in a small case. I've had the vinyl skin for about 2 months and the laptop has been slid in and out of the case once or twice a day since. The skin is staying in place, with no edges lifting, but it is true that it is not being "handled" much.

Maybe others have more experience with this?

Been a few days but I have been netbook shopping. I decided on the 1410-2801. I picked it up Friday in Houston at Frys. I live in Austin but that store did not carry this particular model. the 2801 has a dual celeron the SU2300. I played 720p as well as 1080p files without a stutter and about 50% CPU usage. The HDMI out was OK but not perfect in 1080p, HOWEVER, I did not get it for that reason anyway.(see below) My next move on this machine is to get a 60GB SSD and put the existing 160GB HDD that comes with the machine in an enclosure so I can have the extra portable disk space. The Windows Experience is as follows

    Processor - 3.9
    Memory - 4.8
    Graphics - 3.3
    3D Gaming Graphics - 3.2
    Primary HDD - 5.5

Sunday, I also ordered a Sony 14" VPCCW27FX/B from Best Buy it was $949.00 but it includes 1600*900 14" screen, Blu-ray player, 4GB Ram, i5-520m Processor, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Nvidia GT 330M. I decided to take back the Bluray player I got from BB and apply that money to this machine. (I already have a Bluray player AND a PS3 so this will be my 'office' player. I do not need to upgrade this machine. Since I do not have the Sony yet I only know that the Windows experience will all be 6.0 or above.

My Acer will be in the car probably at all times while the Sony will only have to come out on special occasions. My office also has an Intel Quad and 2 dual core machines.

Thanks for the thread and the help on my decision.

I can not believe how Amazon has jacked up the price to $680. Hope this shortage means Acer is working on an 1810 with Core i7-640UM...

    so the new 1410 (su2300: 2920, 2990, 2706) is $50 more than old versions (su2300: 2285, 2801, 2936) but has a 250gb hd instead of a 160gb hd

what is the difference b/t the "new" (su7300: 8750, 8488, 8459) 1810t which is $80 more than the old one (su7300:8638, 8679, red?)
I don't see a difference, besides the price of course, unless i've missed something?

i've been following this thread for months now, debating on whether pull the trigger on the 1410 or 1810t, but i'm trying to be patient and wait for what acer will do next with these, especially after reading acer's statement that they are not "happy" with these and want to make them better (link found somewhere in this huge thread!)...

I ended up returning the laptop to Amazon, ordered another Olympic 1810TZ from J&R, and everything has been smooth sailing since. Sorry that you have the same problem, I'm pretty sure it's just a faulty touchpad. I took the laptop apart to see if I could find anything wrong, but the touchpad is basically built into the palmrest, so nothing I could fix myself :( Good luck!

The new 1810t doesn't have bluetooth anymore.Even the new 1810tz olympic edition sold in the US doesn't have bluetooth anymore. That's the difference.

Is that correct? The new 1810t Olympic Editions in Canada not only have bluetooth, but also the SU9400,4Gb 800mhz ram modules and larger hd. The new editions also have Win7 64bit whereas the older versions never.

Wow...just saw this which has changed. The available Olympic Special Editions in the US have been reduced and limited to just the one...

We sure got the best of the 1810t in Canada as there are 3 versions available, all with bt. Here is the link. Click on 1810t Timeline Special Edition and then Configurations.

The Olympic Edition here in the UK has a bigger HDD of 500GB, 1 extra stick of ram (4GB total) and intergrated bluetooth. Thats it, it still has the SU4100 processor.

EDIT: Also 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium instead of 32-bit.
EDIT 2: Our ram is 667mhz. The Acer site has the UK specs all wrong :O

Having opened it up, I am sure that it can be purchased and installed quite easily...making the system bluetooth integrated... Its easy to open the latch and remove, replace or add.

    And here ya go...piks:

Wow, that really is a nice looking machine. How cool is it after 7 hours or more? Have you tried to play anything on it such as World of Warcraft? Could you get over 5 hours out of it while surfing the net?

Sorry for the off-loading of questions on you :p

EDIT: Are the logos etched or painted black? I thought they were Diamond Etched.

No...truth is I love this much more than my XPS 1210/1330 and M1340 before it. I usually charge it at night and it gets used sporadically during the day and then on steady most of the night. I cannot get less than 8 hours with this and have come close to 10 hours with some of the services shut down (bt/net). Normally I am on balanced mode, internet on, bt on and it is checking my email every 2 minutes...with Aero on of course.

Tonight, I have been using the system steady for this and writing a report since 4:00 and I still have 68% battery left with an estimate of 4hrs 55min.

There is absolutely no heat whatsoever on this system and it is barely even warm...even when playing hd or lots of video. I'm not much of a gamer sorry. there is a description on Acer of how they have reduced and dispersed heat on this system and it sure as heck works.

The most heat I have ever been able to get is 'barely warm'.

Hope this helps and fire away if you have any other questions... Oh...got a great price to in Canada when Futureshop pricematched to $705.

The logos are chrome and look to be art of the unit. Its a brushed aluminum colour

I wonder if it could play a flash based game like Machinarium ( http://machinarium.net)? That game makes my MBP a frying pan!

The version in the UK has the Pentium SU4100 chip and a standard 500GB HDD so I am guessing it won't be as fast as yours. The first thing I would do is rip off the stickers :p Over 5 hours battery with WiFi on = I want! I want it to surf the net on the sofa with while the better half watches her TV shows or whatever lol.

Thats kind of funny that you mentioned ripping stuff off. I also have a motorcyccle (pik below). Everyone laughed at first when I suggested on another site that they should debadge it and take off all the emblems as well as reflectors. Once I show the final result most like the idea...

There is not really a difference in speed between the two processors.Nothing noticable.Don't worry at all about the heat it barely gets warm.I have the su4100 and same battery with LES and I am not getting nowhere near the times he mentions.I am lucky to get 6 hours with regular use in balanced mode.

Awesome, have you tried showing 1080p on a TV via HDMI? It was the heat I was most worried about... now to get the funds!

The 1810TZ plays 720p and 1080p via hdmi flawlesly. The 1410 plays 720p excellent and 1080p with a stuter.Forget about heat with this machines. If you have the means try to get a machine from USA,way cheaper than here in Europe.

Short story on the build-quality of my 1810TZ.
My wild little two year Poodle often flies thru the air to land on the sofa.

Last week he landed on the corner of my 1810TZ
which was sitting on the arm of the sofa. The machine flipped around
and landed upright on our tile floor. Still running. No need to reboot.
Damage confined to a single claw indentation on the palm rest.
See the photo. Good machine, bad dog!

Can anyone test WoW on the 1810 with the Pentium processor? I'm curious to see how well it runs.
