    Bill Gates private checking account!

Actually, I've had the same thought.
Got $75 cash back on my 1810TZ.
Must be some cooperative agreement between Microsoft and the sellers.
Many other sites also do this, like FatWallet. But not so high percentages.

Are we speaking of the 1410 when we say it wont display HDMI HD content?

Yes, it can output HD video. It can't output DTS-MA and True-HD audio.

Anyone know if the 1810T can boot from a SD card in the built in reader?

No personal experience, but I've read "No" in many places, even if the SD card is in an external USB reader.

But there is some rather technical info at this Link
about making a Bootable SD card for Canon using an application called hdHacker.

Take a look, and let us know if anything is possible.

I've taken Microeconomics 1st year as an elective and there is this "Hurdle method of price discrimination". Basically, if you sell your good expensive, only a limited number of people will buy it and you won't make much profit. If you sell the good cheap, then you lose the money "rich" people were willing to pay. There is a way to maximize profits -- when you sell your goods at the maximum price each single person is willing to pay. How would you do that? You introduce a system of coupons/sale/discounts/Bing cashback, which are used by people who wouldn't pay the full price. Here is an actual PowerPoint slide from the course:
I don't know much about Bing, but I think that Bing gets paid by the on-line retailers to give you a discount.

Yeah, it can! I've installed and used to run Ubuntu from 16GB SDHC card. Just don't forget to select the right thing in the F12 boot menu.

Was is it a pretty straight forward process to get it working, or did it require a pile of trickery to make it work?

    BTW prikolchik,

I see you have an Acer 1410, I have the su2300/cpu model. What was it like going from 2GB Ram to 4GB ram? Why did you do that instead of an SSD upgrade?(which I have already done). I am looking for a justification for going to 4GB on this machine. My basic use for this is to be a glorified netbook and another screen when I can not be at home and I want to do some financial 'daytrading'. The SSD gets me up and into Win 7 FAST. If I need to do multi-tasking I bring the Sony. I also want to watch movies on the 1410.

(Funny thing, the two machines we have are pretty close. The E1705 in Canada is the 9300 and 9400 line here in the states. I got the WUXGA because I need the screen real estate for my charts)

Not sure on this one but the more adapters you put in line it would seem to begin to cause more issues. Matrox has an answer for that though.

    DualHead2Go & TripleHead2Go
Since it has the Matrox name it will most likely work but it will cost you some $$$. Newegg has them, but check the Matrox site to be sure you are looking at the right model if you decide to go that route.

There are also USB to VGA adapters I saw them at Best Buy the other day.

I'm not finding a good answer via search, but I notice Phil mentioned doing this somewhere in the thread. BTW - I am NOT a computer jock

I have a laptop and desktop, both using Win 7 32 bit. I am a bit uncomfortable with the 64 bit install on the 1810TZ I got yesterday (yay!). Mixing 32 bit and 64 bit PCs on the same system and 64 bit issues that 32 bit systems don't have (drivers, etc) concerns me. Prime example is the etxernal DVD I borrowed to make recovery discs - Samsung doesn't make 64 bit drivers.

The portability of the 1810 was then main driver in getting it, but I want to use the HDMI to tie into my home theater setup through my Denon 3808 receiver. 32 bit vs 64 bit concerns me here as well.

Phil mentioned that the 32 bit install you did didn't show any performance hit to speak of.

So, what I am thinking I would like to do is simply do an install of a 32 bit Win 7 and wipe the 64 bit system in the 1810TZ.

My question is this - can you give me some thoughts/guidance in doing this or tell me I should NOT do it.

Install 64 bit on the 1810TZ . I did last Friday on the same system exactly and everything works fine. In fact, in another thread there are some video flicker problems which some are now believing are a result of the 32 bit drivers as the same problem is not reflective of the 64 bit systems.

Wait....your post is confusing but if you have 64bit on the TZ keep it... 32 bit is built in to the 64bit os to account with any 32bit proram anamolies.

My 1410 has the 64bit OS and the video flicker. I'm seeing it a bit in BIOS too though so I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem. I'm going to get it sent in ... one of these days...

Sorry for posting this but I think my original post go buried.

I am having problems outputting the display to my plasma. When I plug in the HDMI, it does show up on the plasma, but you can barely make out the picture because its bad resolution and really white. Any ideas? I updated most of the drivers I could find but that didn't do anything.

I've seen some people complain of a battery drain issue. Is everyone experiencing this and has a cause been determined? I am having this problem to a much worse extend on my eeePC 900 where the battery will be completely dead if the battery is left attached overnight. I've been eyeing this Acer 1410 for awhile now in hopes that I could avoid the battery drain problem.

I have a 1410 with SU2300. I don't experience a battery drain with this model. I use it mostly for surfing, email, word processing and spreadsheet work. I usually get 5.5 to 6.25 hours per charge. Not the greatest battery life but given its speed it is a good compromise. Don't know anything about the eeePC 900.

When I run Acer update it says there are no driver updates available. but under device manager my chipset driver 8.15.10.1855 is dated 7/28/2009 So it must be old. Is Acer updater program useless? should I update to the newest chipset driver? Anything else I should update? Any advantages to updating bios?

    Hi,

I have recently purchase an AS1810TZ and love it. This small notebook is a world of difference with my previous laptop a HP 6910P

One thing that bothers me a bit, and I would like to resolve, is the fan behaviour / noice when I am connected to power.
On battery the 1810TZ is ultra silent but as soon as I plug in the power the fan starts to run; even when there is no use.

I have changed in the power options in the adanced settings the system cooling policy for "plugged in" to passive but still the fan runs when plugged in and not (or minimal) when on battery.

Are there other options, perhaps something in the BIOS, that I can try?

I'm kinda disappointed with the display panel on this laptop (I have the gateway model). Theres the flicker and the overall weak picture quality that are bothering me atm.

What are my options? I assume a replacement screen will have the same problems.

or are there better panels to be had that I can purchase myself?

I have the same laptop but I do experience the drain. 5-6% per day when OFF.
I'm still trying different things - the last thing was to disable the wired ethernet adapter. Still 2 days later I'm down 11%.

Chuck, your's doesn't lose battery charge when left off for a couple of days? Or do you use yours often enough that you wouldn't notice the high drain when off?

(I use mine on weekends, so I lose ~ 35% per week.)
    Dave

Edit: Decided enough was enough. Just filled out the RMA request on Acer's website. Will ship my laptop in for repair tomorrow.

Oh, so you have the same problem and have been in contact with them? Which model do you have? (SU2300 version too?) If so, have you found anyone with the SU2300 that doesn't have the problem?

I'm including a note with mine describing the problem. I hope they don't just follow a script and blame the battery. I'm charging it to 100% so it can 'drain' on it's way to them.

Unfortunately Acer is not as quick to update as Intel is. FWIW, I had troubles with some video formats so I updated my graphics drivers by using Intel's own 2021s. Besides a fancier interface, I saw no benefits to updating the drivers, so I don't think you'd be missing much if you prefer to wait on Acer.

I recommend updating the BIOS. Since you didn't mention which model you have, I'm not sure what benefits you will notice. In my case, updating my 1810TZ's BIOS to 3033 solved an incorrect CPU Core Temperature reporting problem. Apps like CPUID's HW Monitor & Intek's 1810tray were reporting a static value foe CPU temps and 3033 solved the problem :)

"There's the flicker"... what flicker? Is this a known problem that I'm not aware of...

As for "weak picture", I noticed that the panel's contrast and brightness was way off, causing among other problems, washed-out colors. The good news is that you can calibrate the panel to a much better state :)

I'm fortunate enough to own a Spyder3Express HW calibration tool, but you can get half-way decent results using Windows' own "manual" calibration process!

Give it a try before returning your unit. Also check you display's HW ID to see what model you have (my 1810TZ for instance, has an AU Optronics panel - AUO205C). AU Optronics are mediocre at best but once calibrated, my 1810TZ comes pretty close to my Dell XPS M1330's Toshiba panel in color rendition :D

    Hi,

I'm having my Acer 1810TZ for a month now and so far I can say that I'm totally love with this tiny thing! But I'm starting to worry about my battery! I never put it out at home when I work with the laptop. I already ruined a laptop battery in my old Acer 5080 Aspire laptop, in two years its capacity went from 4 hours to 20 minutes, mainly because I never put it out when the battery was charged, so I kept charging and charging it for days, weeks etc.

So my concern is, whether I should take the battery if it's fully charged and I'm on AC power or are the batteries more intelligent now and won't lose capacity or quality due to constant overcharging?

    Please help.

Lithium cells should not be stored at 100% charge, it decreases their capacity faster than if they were stored at 50%.

So when home and on continuous AC power, you should pull the battery.

You only get 6 hours per full charge or is that just what the battery meter is telling you?

There is no memory effect on lithium cells. You might have a confused battery meter though that is miscalculating what your remaining charge is.

Thanks Chuck. I googled "laptop discharges battery when off" and found that a lot of laptops do this (toshiba, lenovo, HP) some to a worse degree than this Acer.

I REALLY hope that this will be solved with a BIOS update, or during my RMA of my laptop. If not then I guess I'll just get used to pulling the battery OR topping it off weekly. My fear is that I'll forget and 3 weeks will go by and I'll have a brick for a battery as it is too discharged to ever be recharged again.

Our AS1410-2285 abruptly dropped to about 3 hours of battery life, but nearly the original battery life was restored by recalibration recommended by the BatteryCare program. Visit the Control Panel, Power advanced options, and make sure the critical level is 3% with auto-hibernation. Then let the AS1410 run until it hibernates. With power off, recharge and keep the charger plugged in for another 5 hours or more.

Based on discharge with the AS1410 turned off for an extended period, we estimate it uses about 120 mW when off. The 47.5 Wh type UM09E31 OEM battery will fully discharge with the AS1410 off in a little over 2 weeks.

Is this the first Notebook that you've tried with your Plasma? If yes, do you have any friends that might be able to test their Notebooks with you TV? How about you trying yours with someone else's TV too... .

After charging my 1410 w/SU2300 yesterday, I let it sit powered off for 22 hours before using it. According to Battery Bar I lost 6 minutes of battery use during that time. How much time are you losing? Keep in mind I do a Win shutdown rather than letting the 1410 sleep or hibernate. Don't knopw whether that makes a difference. Chuck

This may sound funny, but what do you mean with "guide", the basic (& generic) guide that comes installed with your Acer Notebook, or are you searching for more of a "Customer Service Repair Guide", which, AFAIK, are not available for the Acer gear...

My [ German] 1810TZ came delivered with two guides, an "Aspire 1410/1810 Series quick guide" (12pages) and an "Aspire Series generic guide" (55pages). The 12-page is all but useless (unless you've never used a Notebook before...) and the "generic" guide covers all the Acer applications (eRecovery, etc.) but is NOT specific to the 1410/1810 series (hence, the term "generic"... :p)

Hey everyone, I gotta question about connecting of 1410 to TV with HDMI. The thing is that the original resolution of the TV is 1366x768 however when I connect the laptop to the TV there is no original 1366x768 resolution. Instead of it I see that my 1366x768 resolution inside the TV screen and it cannot be stretched at the screen of TV. Laptop tries to set 1920 resolution automatically and of course it is larger than resolution of the TV so it doesnt fit the screen. Does anyone know the suggestion for TV to show the picture in original 1366x768 resolution?

    Thanx.

Make sure you have the latest video drivers. I believe 12/19/09 are the most current drivers.

This might sound obvious, but make sure both HDMI ends are securely in the tv and the 1810t. (This was the problem at first. The cable didn't fit right and I didn't want to jam it into the laptop. So, the connection wasn't secure)

The laptop will black out for a few seconds and then it will come on in clone mode.

Next, go to video properties and change to "Digital TV".

Lastly, if you have a 52" LCD like I do, change resolution to 1900x1080.

Enjoy...although everything looks like crap because the screen is so damn big. Youtube HD looks like crap on a screen this big...
