Double AA batteries die just sitting on the counter...I don't think it's too much to expect 6 batteries that are connected together and connected to the complicated circuitry of a laptop to dissipate a few fractions of a watt.
Although, You're right, you shouldn't stop protesting, that would be wrong too. Demanding better is important. But complaining and then suffering when you all you have to do is move your battery 1 inch when you set it down for storage is silly.

I take it ALL of you are still having problems w/ even the latest Dec 2026 Intel 4500MHD (series 4) drivers gfx corruption whereby you resume from S4 (hibernation) and are on A/C power? I'm shocked that this problem is still prevalent. I can't imagine that a multitude of folks didn't report it.
Anyway, I don't know if there are any DXVA acceleration enhancements between revisions from Sept to Dec, but which would any of you recommending going w/ to escape this now venerable problem? I know 1986 are buggy. What about 1892, 1883, or 1872? Am I losing anything by escaping this problem? Cheers. -
AA alkalines die sitting on the shelf after many years, not in 20 days.
Very high capacity AA's NiMH will drain in weeks due to high self discharge - enough of a problem that Sanyo and others have come out with low self discharge cells (eneloop for example).
Lithium cells have always had low self discharge. 10's of % in a year.
The problem with my 1410 is the continuous draw (~ 15mA). For me it's 100% dead in 20 days.
Lithium cells should not be recharged if discharged too low. The protection circuitry in the pack should prevent this from happening but I don't care to test it as a replacement pack is quite expensive. Very high depth of discharge too shortens lithium cell life.
Yeah, I can pull the battery once a week after I'm done using my laptop. I can also not store this laptop in a small case so that it doesn't accidentally connect the battery. Better yet, I can get a larger case for it so I can store the battery separately.
Meanwhile my 2 larger Dell laptops I've had for 5 years now continue to happily sit in their cases, without me having to think of them, with the batteries connected, for months at a time without appreciably discharging their batteries.
Some of the 1810's and 1410's don't have this high drain when off. What did Acer do wrong with my AS1410?
Well, at least I don't have an EEE 900 that goes dead in days when off.
Dave
(my 1410 is still with Acer on an RMA for this problem) -
Ya, what he ^ said.
-
I agree with you Probedude... I also have two Acer 1410 (su2300) and one 1810 (su4100), all of them have this problem with battery drain when off... Is this a common problem with all Acer computers ? (for example, I had two Acer aspire one with this problem too). What should I do ? RMA ? The answer must come from Acer. But they have no answers, because they continue selling computers with this problem (a really big and annoying problem !). In 48 hours when the batteries stays in computers, they show 90% of the capacity. Few days later, batteries are completely drained !
I have also two Thinkpads (T60p and X61s) and they have a perfect battery management. It's a pleasure to work with them. That's why for me and everyday use Acer notebooks aren't the best: just nice toys. -
-
I was out of town for about 7-8 days, and battery drain (w/ battery connected) was from 38% to 32%. I guess that's not too bad.
-
I received my ACER Aspire 1410 in December 2009, and now the arrow keys stopped working! Actually it is just the DOWN ARROW key.
Anyone else have this problem?
I don't even use the ACER all the time. When I'm home I use my Apple iMac. I'm very disappointed that the keyboard should stop working (the key is still on the keyboard it just doesn't do anything and there is no rebound when it is depressed) after what i would consider as moderate to light use. -
My 1410 was delivered to me yesterday, and mine seems to have loose hinges (or not very strong ones). I've created a separate thread asking for any thoughts and/or suggestions about it.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=464108
Does anyone else with a 1410 have loose hinges? Are the hinges on your 1410 nice and firm?
Thanks! -
-
Thanks for the info Probedude. I just got off the phone with Newegg.com, and they're shipping me a replacement which I should have in 3 days. I am seriously hoping that this one comes with firm hinges, because them being loose is a total bummer.

After 5 full months of daily use, my AS1410 is working great and is as solid as the day I received it. This is my main computer and I have been very pleased with the quality and performance of this machine.
Battery life is right around the 4-4.5 hour mark which is pretty much what I was getting under Linux when it was new even though my battery is showing a 12% drop in capacity. I'm not sure how accurate that measurement is, but I do charge my battery once or twice daily so some wear is to be expected. I have not let the laptop sit for more than a day at a time, so I can't comment on the discharge issues some of you are reporting. -
I have a problem with my webcam not plugged in (the imaging device doesn't show up in Device Manager). I sent in my laptop for repair, where they replaced the motherboard, hard drive, and LAN board. When I got my laptop back, the touchpad and the webcam were unplugged. To say the least, I'm less then impressed with Acer's tech support, especially when their receipt says that my laptop has been "thoroughly tested".
I followed the disassembly guide and the touchpad was easy enough to plug back in, but I don't know where the connection to the camera is. Can anyone give me some hints or possibly even post some pictures on which cable to plug in? -
Has anyone tried out any keyboard covers for the 1410/1810?
I'm having trouble finding anything that looks like it will fit well and not move around, given the flatness of the keyboard.... -
Wondering if anyone can suggest a good dual channel, 800mhz kit for the 1410. It would need to be 2x 2GB. Also, it's going to be around 80-100 dollars, so I'm wondering if the purchase was worth it in your opinion, Thanks!

hi owners of 1410/1810...!!
could any one confirm if this laptop can run on 5 Ghz wireless...?!?
I intend on getting a wireless N router. but i read this....
The two-band method is also an option only if the new N devices are dual-band. To tell, look for "agn" or "802.11a/b/g/Draft-N" in the notebook or device's wireless spec. The "a" indicates 802.11a, which is the earlier wireless spec for the 5 GHz band. The use of "N" by itself does not tell you if both bands are supported!
You may have to dig deep into the spec to determine 5 GHz band support. I just did a quick check over at Dell to see how they were spec'ing notebook wireless adapters. I found an Inspiron 15 listed with Wireless Networking Cards: Intel WiFi Link 5100 802.11 Wireless-N Mini Card. But nowhere could I find a reference to the fact that the Intel WiFi Link 5100 does, in fact, support 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N. I had to check Intel's description to find out.

So could anyone kindly confirm if this laptop can run on 5 Ghz on Dual Band "N" wireless router...???
Thanks -
My 1810t is on N 5ghz. Paired with a Netgear 3700 dual band router.
-
To answer the 5GHz wifi question, mine came with the Intel Wireless 1000 card. It is only a 2.4Ghz card that is still able to get up to 300mbps on N wireless networks. I have a Linksys dual band and it works fine on that router. I also have taken my laptop everywhere with me and haven't had any issues hooking up to hotspots around town. -

5 hour battery? Wonder what the tag will be on that.....love my timeline!

poop on that Celeron 743 ULV... downgrade. but at least *maybe* they fixed the fan rattle that is prevalent in the 1410s

I need a small travel unit to hold me over till I decide which 13"-14" notebook to buy. I think the AS1410-2990 would probably be great (saphire blue-of course). Three questions? Does the 1410 come with bluetooth built in or can it be fitted? Is the model due for a refresh? Is there a 1420 in the works (probably moot as I need something now)? Finally, who has the best price for these - New egg has them for 459.99 with free shipping - anyone know a cheeper place to get them?

Keep in mind that they have begun to change the specs and prices on some of these models since the OP. I believe the new retail price on the SU2300 model is now $449.00 and it now comes with a larger hard drive. The $400 SU2300s with the 160gb HD might be harder to find. You'll have to do some research.
-
The Japanese version of the 1410 with the SU2300 does come with Bluetooth preinstalled.
Edit: And 800MHz RAM, before I forget. -

Don't know if this is good news or bad news. Acer has had my RMA for 1 week and it hasn't yet been fixed. Just called to get an update, worthless customer service BTW. CSR at first said that it was in repair (duh), when I asked for any details on what they did, she read off my complaint word for word. Uhmm, that's my complaint, that is not the technician's entry. She then said my repair was complete and it would ship in 1 to 2 days. Huh? You just said nothing was done, and now it's done? "It takes 7-10 business days to repair, you will receive information when it ships."
So it's not done. "No".
You have no information on it. "just that it's in repair"
Worthless.
Well, hopefully it's because they're working on the problem OR waiting for a part instead of just throwing another battery in it and shipping it back.

I feel you Probedude... I thought they'd be a PiTA w/ my last 1410, esp. after their 1st generic reply asking me to do all these unrelated troubleshooting steps (sorta like HP's ghetto a$$ customer service), so I just sent it back to newegg since I was within 30 days. The 2nd system I received has this annoying fan rattle noise

Hi there,
I have a 1810TZ Netbook. After I bought it I started deleting all the software I don't need. Apparently I also deleted the driver for the function keys and now the only function keys that work are the ones for brightness and volume. I wasn't able to find a driver for those keys(+osd) on the acer site
Do you guys know how to fix it? -
Do a clean install and Win7 will take care of all of your function keys for you.
-
I'm not really in the mood to reinstall my windows, since I installed quite a lot of stuff and I don't to want install everything again just because of a minor problem.
-
You can also throw the Win7 disk in and simply have it repair itself....
-
I neither got a windows cd with my timeline nor do I have a disc drive...
-
Then...download a Windows iso to a USB and boot from the USB. You will find a Microsoft usb/dvd tool which dows this at www.download.com and search those words.
-
Since I live in a small town we just have a slow DSL connection. Isn't there any other way to solve a little driver problem then download an image which has the size of 5gb?

oh finally something that looks good
Thank you very much. I will post the result in 10 minutes!
edit: yup it worked. Again, thanks a lot. Have some rep!
edit: Since I'm already here: Do I have to somehow activate my bluetooth? I tried to install the driver(I turned on bluetooth via the button on my netbook) but it said that I need to plug in the device. Also windows didn't show a notification that it found new hardware. Do I have to turn bluetooth on in the bios or something? -
-
(a bluetooth driver was not installed but I downloaded one from the acer site for the 1810tz, still I don't know if it was exactly for my netbook) -
ps:The left button is the bluetooth.the other is the wi-fi. -
412G25n
After I installed the launchmanager I was able to see which of the buttons did what. And it even showed an activated symbol on the screen but no repsonse from windows :-/
edit: I googled and it seems like it has not bluetooth. I can live with that. Still kind of weird that I have two bluetooth keys... -
