I am getting 4.5 hours with the 4400 mah battery and 6-6.5 with the 5600 battery in balanced mode, level 3 brightness.I don't trust battery bar,I have removed it from my notebook.
-
I get 4 to 4-1/2 out of my 4400mAh battery on Linux. I had a hard time getting much more than 4-1/2 hours out of it on Linux even when new.
Most days I'm using a web browser, music player and a Java development stack for several hours, so it's charged at least once a day and plugged in part of the time. The battery is showing 11% wear after ~ 7 months of daily use. I'm very satisfied but I would like to get a larger capacity battery at some point. My dream would be a as1410/1810 that gets an "honest" 10+ hours of run time without a big gain in weight. A 8400+mAh 9-cell would get me close without too much of a weight penalty. -
Just got my AS1410 yesterday, everything was fine last night. This morning I boot it up, there was a vertical streak about 1 1/2" wide on the right side of the screen. So I let it finish booting and restart the laptop, and the streak went away, got me really nervous. Does anyone have or had this experience with their AS1410?

How's that 4 GB of memory working out for you? Do you notice any major improvements with your system performance? Worth buying?
-
I went from 3GB PC-5300-667mhz RAM to 4GB -PC6400-800mhz. I noticed a slight improvement while using VMware. I'm using 32-bit Ubuntu so I'm still only using 3GB so the slight difference is related to the speed of the RAM and probably not worth the money to me. I'll probably switch to 64-bit Ubuntu at some point and gain that extra 1GB so maybe I'll feel better about my purchase then. I do have 64-bit W7 Pro on another partition. It does recognize 4GB, but I haven't used it so I can't comment on it's performance.
The main reason I did the upgrade is because I crippled my Dell by leaving it with only 1GB RAM and my wife, who didn't know I took the RAM out, was complaining about it.

....coming into this discussion late, but Panasonic is a subsidiary of Matsua Corp of Japan. But Panasonic products and components are made in various locations, Japan being one of them.
My Toshiba U205: Made in China; it's Li-ion battery: made in Japan.
I have a Sony CD-Radio, made in Japan, but other products by Sony are made in locations other than Japan.
Another example: Standard Horizon [Vertex Standard Co., Ltd.] builds marine electronics [marine band radio, marine use gps, AIS systems]. I use a hand-held marine band radio: Made in Japan; it's AC charger, dc charger, other accessories: Made in China.
Extreme example: almost 98% of home LCD HDTVs: components made everywhere from Japan to Malaysia to China, but for western hemi consumption/distribution, you'd be hard pressed to find one NOT assembled in Mexico. Try it sometime at Frys or CC or wherever.
So, assessment by name only doesn't really mean much anymore.
BTW: still impressed by this 1810T-8638; has anyone ever figured out what kind/brand protective film will work for the back of lcd to mitigate fingerprint magnet effect? -
sorry about mis-spelling above: "Matsua Corp" should be "Matsua Corp."; my typing or o/s didn't quite keep up with fingers.
-
wow, don't know why, but either my k/b [ext] or my o/s won't complete "Matsua Corp."
-
M a t s u s h i t a Electric Industrial Corp., Ltd.
-
thats weird...the o/s or this bb wouldn't allow the spelling until I seperated the characters w/a space. sorry for the inconvenience.
-
jps10 it's the BB site, most forums will filter the word "s h i t" without spaces as profanity
And those going back about fabrication location. I was just pointing out that the trend I see is most products made in china and I think the majority of chinese made products are lower quality, breakdown/fail more often, cost less/cheaper, need replacement far more often than the competing or equivalent designed product manufactured in Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, maybe India too; and I think Canada and USA would be added to the list of longer lasting/better product manufacturers if they were doing the manufacturing too.
Every device that's ever failed/worn out on me has been made in china and none of my devices that were made in Japan has ever died. I can't remember off my head where the 1989 Gameboy generation1 was made but I still have mine with a bunch of games and it's still working and it has been dropped from a minimum of 1ft high many times the past 20yrs. I remember once it fell 3ft hit concrete and then got kicked accidentally during sprinting. I have cassette decks w/radio and even analog stereo receivers that have died that were made in china. Nintendo is a Japanese company. Of course to be fair cassettes are moving parts and the Gameboy has no moving parts however the radio function should not fail under this premise too.
If you want to point out that electrical instability from AC source damaged my radio/cassette players and stereo receivers then I'll add that I also used dollar store multi-voltage dual polarity AC adaptors to plug into that old Gameboy. I must have gone through 20 of those on that burned out/frayed/snaped off/broke over the decades but the Gameboy is still kicking strong.
I've also never seen a counterfeit/fake electronic product manufactured in any country other than China. I'm fully aware there are counterfeit clothing/apparel made in Europe and North America. -
@thundernet & ohiomoto -thanks for your responses. I guess if batterybar isn't reliable I should get rid of it as well.
-
ghetto child, it goes back to economics. An item made in China is going to cost less mainly because of lower wages. An American making minimum wage is still paid 6-7 times more than his Chinese counter part. So, a typical item that costs a dollar made by a Chinese worker is going to cost 7-8 dollars if made by an American. If you are a business person, which route would you take to make the most money?
-
not to derail the thread, but regarding the 1810T shiny exterior [and display bezel], anyone yet find a product solution, such as an adhesive overlay, etc.?
Don't know if such an item exists, or if I'm even in favor of adhesives, but something that has a textured, tacky or rubbery surface would seem to be a solution. Transparent would also be nice. -
Somewhere buried in this thread there was a discussion concerning adhesive overlays and even painting the bezel. I don't remember the details, but I think most were satisfied with them, BUT one guy ruined his display when some of the water he used to place the overlay worked its way into the display. I don't thing he was able to fix it so be careful.
As for me, I have no problems with the bezel. Mine has a matte finish most of the time. Such a finish is achieved by having so many finger prints on it that it is no longer shiny. Another option would be sand paper.
-
PS, Check out the timeline tweaks thread. I think some guys were putting carbon fabric on the bezels. Personally, I'd use leather.

Hi all. I was thinking of connecting my 1810t with my TV. Does this simplu work with a VGA to S-video, alt. scart cable?
Or does my GMA4500 not support TV-out?
Help appriciated!
as always you guys seem to know what i don´t... -
Yes it does work. But wouldn't it be simpler to connect VGA to VGA?That is if your TV has a VGA of course.
-
Mine connected to HDMI
-
Likewise...both of my systems are plug and play to my 50" Plasma via HDMI and it is great!!!
-
I think you shot yourself in the foot there... if china was making top/best quality products then as a business man you would charge the highest price the market would allow because your product would simply be THE best out there. A business man AND the market would be justified in charging a higher premium for their top quality product and no one else would be able to compete because everyone else would have too high a production cost (partly due to higher wages) to compete with this top quality chinese product. Alas we don't see this usually as their products are priced lower and don't last as long usually.
I left the original protective plastic all over my Acer 1410, just clipped the edges so they don't stick off. 5.5 months later and still no prints on it since the original plastic is still there lol.
That's a possibility, look for the finest grain sand paper like 600 or more if possible. It will feel like paper with a slighly rubbery grip due to the fine granularity. It might be able to rub off the shine without making visible streaks or scratches. -
Yepp, problem is that i got a crt, think that might casue som troubles...

HELP?!?!? I tried searching the X: ramdrive for a list of .exe files there's 800+ lines of results. I would gladly save the list in a text file and post here if it could help anyone help me but I don't know how to tell command prompt to print the results into a text file.
Anyone willing to work with me on getting this recovery to install from a usb flash drive? -
Hey people are you serious??????DON'T do that to your precious notebook.I will report you to the notebook police.
-
Sanding is OK, but there are some serious rules to work by. First, I'd try 1500 or even 2000 grit [before anything as rough as 600], 1500 to 2000 is what is used to 'wet-sand' automotive paint, before polishing compounds are used. [do not wet sand your notebook; just dry sand by hand]
Sanding the outer surface with something like 1000 grit, which is used to remove fine scratches from automotive painted surfaces, might be OK, but if anyone is inclined to try it, do a small area [1/4 x 1/4" in ] first to see if thats what you really want and to be sure you won't sand thru a paint that will expose some drab grey plastic material that looks worse than a smudgy/glossy lid.
Be very lighthanded, especially around the curves and edges.
Be sure to wrap the entire base in a few wraps of saranwrap and tape it in place. This is the only way to be sure your sand grit doesn't migrate into you hdd, fan, switch contatcs, etc. I would use blue painters tape and do the same to the display side of the lid also. If anyone has to absolutely sand their display bezel, be sure to cover the camera and mic ports and, this should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway: carefully mask the entire display panel and don't peel your tape away by one sudden, energetic pull.
After sanding, use a small plain bristle brush to remove grit, then maybe a compressed air can or mini-vacuum to be extra clean before removing sarawraps.
It's easily do-able, just be sure this is what you want and be sure to test a small area first.
Myself, I'll probably try an adhesive sheet; I've seen some that mimic carbon fiber surface. Cost about $16, but I'm not sure how well cut they are to match the 1810T lid profile.
I would be happy if they were cut rectangular to about the edges before they roll around to the display bezel. I can live with the edges exposed [a smudgy edge? oh no! what a computing distraction!].
OK..seriously, sanding would do it, just start off with some 2000 or 1500 1st and be careful.
I'll post pics later if I get an reasonable adhesive skin on. -
here's something I just thought of regarding adhesive skins: are these 'skins' shiny too?
Just my luck to go with a carbon fiber look a like that's just as shiny-glossy as the lid. -
Hey your mixing my sarcastic post (although I guess you could use sand paper) with someone else's post that pointed out that you could do it! What will people think of me?!?!
-
Anyone with an AS1410 tried out one of these 6600 mAh batteries?
I'm looking to get a decent backup battery. -
whatever works, I mean who am I to tell them no...actually, I would try it, except I'm lazy and would rather pay $$ to have something that's removable/reversable.
OTOH, if someone wants to jump in the river, they should at least be informed of the possibility of ending up in the next county by the time they make it to shore again.
ohiomoto: Maybe you're the 'Morpheus' of this thread and all of the clones posting here are relying on you to help find 'the one'. -
Does the 1410-2990 have built in active hard drive protection?
I'm trying to decide whether I'm going to get a Western Digital Scorpio Black w/ free-fall sensor or without free-fall sensor.
If the 1410 already has built in active hard drive protection, I don't need the free-fall sensor in the hard drive. -
moovius if that battery is made in china I bet it will work but will likely overheat, wear out fast, and in a year be unuseable. I don't trust overcharged/overstuffed/overloaded/overfilled batteries made in China. They're often much less safe.
-
I just picked up a 1810T-8638 and mine shows the Battery is made in Japan (assembled in Taiwan) So no they are not made in China at least mine.
I bought this as a companion to my HP and i have to say no regrets. After using a Netbook, this Notebook blows it away.
Faster, can add real memory (not limited to 2 gigs) longer battery and everything just is so much nicer. -
The real beauty is that in addition to all of the performance gains you get a nicer display in the (more or less) same size package. My 1410 fits in a 10" "netbook" sleeve.

There's more files than this on the X:\ ramdrive but I left out the x:\windows\winsxs folder as it looks like that folder is a compressed backup of something and the following list is only the "dir *.exe /s" command. Also this isn't entirely extracted from the Acer recovery discs. I'm using the Acer recovery copy but the BOOT.wim file on the Acer discs I replaced with the Boot.wim from a Windows 7 Acer upgrade disc.

If anyone is interested it appears the 1810T-8638 - Core 2 Duo SU7300, BT built in, black is back in US stock about everywhere for about $600.
I received mine the other day. It has a mid Feb 2010 birth date. Build quality seems very good. I don't like the flexible keyboard, but I'll get used to it.
Anyone find a good fitting skin? It is a fingerprint magnet.
I've moved up from a 4 year old Presario 2200 running XP, so just about anything is a speed demon. It was reliable/durable for me at least. -

Does the 1810T have a better keyboard than the 1410T and are they interchangable?
Bronsky
Edit: from the looks of the EBay listings, they're the same? -
They are the same and they are interchangable.

Intel X-25 SSD is coming Monday. Where can I pick up a cheap aluminum case for the 250 GB HD in there now. Radio shack? Does best buy have them in their stores?

I need a laptop as soon as possible, looks like the 1830t wait will be too long for me.
I'm going to be adding in an SSD (~$150) so I want to keep costs as low as possible. Here are my current options:
1410 SU2300 (upgrade ram to 4gig) - $ 460
1810tz SU4100 - $520
1810T SU7100 - $570
1810T SU9400 - $720
I'm going to be using this laptop for awhile - and it will pretty much be my desktop replacement (i will be plugging it into my monitor through HDMI when at home).
How much difference am I going to notice through these jumps in processors? If I'm going to be putting in an SSD anyway, which would you recommend, keeping in mind I want to spend as little as possible... -
I did some research last week on US models and from what I've read, you will notice little difference between the SU 4100/7300/9400 processors if you notice anything at all. You can comfortably shop price/features for these. Depending on what you are doing, you may notice the jump between the 2300 and the others.
The 7300 has built in hardware support for XP virtualization but recent updates to Windows 7 pro makes that a non issue.
There are only a couple 1810 models that come with built in blue tooth, all of them can be upgraded or can use a dongle, but if its worth the $30 premium to you to have it built in at the factory, look for the 8638 model.
Oh and some of the less expensive TZ models are equipped with only 3 Gbit of RAM.
The 1810 comes with a bigger battery and larger hard drive. -
I agree completely with your assesment.I will respectfully disagree on the fact that the 1810 has a higher resolution
hd screen than the 1410.They have the exact same screen and the exact same graphics card. -
1410T = 1366 x 768
1810T = 1366 x 768
Same resolution as far as I can tell. -
Um, where did you read that? According to Acer, video specs are identical on the 1410 and 1810.

http://us.acer.com/acer/productv.do...ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=1346651341#wrAjaxHistory=11
This is also incorrect. You would think that the higher number means that it's newer, but the 9400 is actually a year older than the 7300. Check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...-low-voltage.2C_45_nm.2C_Small_Form_Factor.29 -
Anyone know where to buy the acer 1410 with su2300 or is it no longer for sale?
It seems the price of these acer laptops have gone way up in the past few months while i was waiting for them to get cheaper. -
I have a 1410T-2920. I have put a BT module in for $22. Upgraded the ram for $70 and just ordered an Intel X-25 40GB SSD for $98 from New Egg. Even without the SSD, the 1410T runs smooth. Can't wait to put the SSD in Monday. I would like a less flexing keyboard but I hear the 1810T is indentical. Other than that, I love my 1410T.
-
I didn't think the resolutions were different but maybe it has to do with screen quality and overall build quality? Everyone seems to be in agreement that the 1810 series is better built then 1410.
Aside from build quality, will I notice a difference in the 2300 and the 4100? I know there are reports that the 4100 combined with the larger battery yields longer battery life but will I see any graphics and motherboard differences?
FYI: BT isn't really that important to me.
