I have a 1410 and an 1810 and they are both Sapphire Blue.I wouldn't even think of getting another colour.I am a Sapphire blue kind of guy(LOL).Too bad the 1830T(if it ever comes out)doesn't come in that colour.
-
-
I wish they'd release it in white over here. Is the Sapphire blue as much a fingerprint magnet as the black model?
-
Yes it is.I had the choice bettween white and blue and I chose the blue.I have to admit the white is beautiful but kind of reminds me of apple and the nineties.

Which is the BEST 500 GB 7200 RPM HDD for the 1810T...???
It has to be....
1. Fast.
2. Queit.
3. Relaible.
4. Cost No Problem.
5. How much faster is a 7200 RPM HDD vs. 5200 RPM HDD....???
Thanks. -
Rana...get an ssd!
-
Exactly 2000 rpms faster.
Actually its the difference between a 5400 and 7200. The difference is noticable. I would go SSD if price is really no object.

les & bronsky...
i'd love to go for SSD...!!! But i really need the Space.... So...
Which HDD then...?? -
Hitachi Travelstar 500GB 7200rpm.A very solid and quiet hard drive.Keep in mind the differences among the major manufacturers(toshiba, western digital, seagate, samsung) are minor. You can't go very wrong.

The Hitachi is even on sale...

I have it in my MacBook Pro where I need the space, the 1410 has a 40GB Intel X25-V. -
I replaced the 320GB 5400 in my 1810tz with a Hitachi 7200.
It measures faster, but I've never noticed a difference. It never felt faster.
Could be my usage, but I never once thought the cost
and especially the effort were worth bothering.
I'll pick up an SSD in a few months when a decent 1830t becomes available.
Right now, there are some new Intel 160GB generation 2

Get a 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Black w/ free-fall sensor.
-
Interesting note: I went from the stock 320GB 5400rpm to a WD Scorpio Black 320gb 7200rpm to a Hitachi 500gb 7200rpm . Although the Hitachi is cooler and quieter and benchmarks a bit better, the WD actually felt faster in day to day usage. Also, my 1810t has a strange quirk where it takes a smidgen longer to shut down and power off fully with the Hitachi installed. The screen goes off but the power & indicator lights stay on for abour 4-5 seconds longer than they did with the WD installed. Perhaps a Hitachi firmware issue or some kind of spin-down thing going on? Not a major gripe, but mildly annoying when I'm in a big hurry.
-
I have a 400GB Samsung Spinpoint 5400Rpm in my 1410,and a 500GB Hitachi Travelstar 7200Rpm in my 1810tz.They are both absolutely quiet.I haven't noticed any increase in speed with the 7200Rpm hard drive. The notebook was very fast and it remained very fast.
-
What's a free fall sensor???I had the impression that all hard drives have some kind of protection against free fall.
-
I was close to getting something in the 1410 series (with su2300 or better), instead of the MSI U230 dual core, which apparently has much better graphics, and slightly better processor. However I'm not much of a gamer, so not sure the MSI graphics would help me much, and the Acer is a little smaller, a little smaller power brick, and MUCH better battery life. Unfortunately, after playing with one at a Fry's B&M, just not sure I can handle that keyboard. I liked the MSI keyboard MUCH better. Do all the 1410 / 1810 products, including the Gateway branded versions use that same keyboard? Is there anyone out there who originally hated the keyboard, but bought one anyway, and has gotten well adjusted to it?
-
This was covered just a few pages back, but the answers to your questions are yes and yes.
-
Best I can tell the 1810TZ has substantially better battery life than the 1410? Why is that? Is the battery pack physically larger and heavier? If so, can the bigger battery also be used on the 1410?
-
Keyboard is no problem after a few days. Machine makes me really happy and is doing exactly what I expected from a small, very portable computer.
Only thing what bugs me is that idiotic glossy display and the very unpractical glossy cover and bezel.
Hansoon -
The 1410 has a 4400mah battery and the 1810 has 5600mah battery. They are the same size and they can be interchanged. In the aftermarket you can find 4400-5200-5600-6600mah batteries at very good prices.
-
I don't really care about the bezel. Mine always has fingerprints on it and that's fine with me. I'm always using it anyway so I'm not looking at the bezel.
The only time the glossy display bothers me is when I'm outside. Seems like no matter where I sit, I still get a reflection of my T-shirt in the display. I've found that it's best to where a black shirt.

If you want to go all out get this:

I want to replace my SATA disk (in timeline 1810T, Olympic edition, SU9400, 400mb, etc.) with an Intel X25 160gb ssd I just purchased.
I opened the disk cover and see that there's a very thin ribbon cable attached to a thin black metal housing which I think needs to be somehow removed so that the ssd drive can be swapped with the existing sata disk.
It looks a bit daunting to me.
Does anyone know of any videos or detailed written instructions that would help to accomplish this seemingly common task? -
Check your pm....wrote instructions for you.
-
Thanks, Les.
After you pointed out that the thin black disk cover slips off easily by prying a credit card under it, it was a piece of cake. -

How does tha Sapphire blue lid compare to the Olympic Silver Edition lid... anyone know?
-
The blue, black, red and white models have plastic lids just like the rest of their shells. The Olympic model has an aluminum or aluminum plated lid.
-
Nop.... not aluminum nor aluminum plated. It's plastic like the rest.Only the colour changes to silver.
-
I was under the impression the silver lid is made of different material.
-
Interesting. I just read a review saying that the Olympic editions have aluminum lids and was about to change my backorder for a 1410-2990 for an Olympic edition 1810 based on that.
-
No it's plastic.Same quality as the rest of the colours. At least the white and silver(olympic)lids don't show as much the fingeprints. My preferences in terms of colours are Saphire Blue-White-Silver-Black-Ruby Red.In that order.
-
Why is it I cannot find any reference to the 1410 / 1810 series at Acer Website?
-
Just freshly installed w7ultimate64 in my 1810T onto newly-purchased Intel X25 160gb SSD. Awesome speed.
Also, Intel SSD Toolbox works fine.
Special thanks to Les for the tips.
This forum rocks.
next task: replacing bilingual k/b with US one ordered from ebay (expected to arrive from China soon, I hope.) -
I can help you with that when you get it in as well....Just let me know when u get it. It is also very very simple and quick!
We have twin systems you know... -
Flash 10.1 Release Candidate just came out a few days ago. I've been using Flash 10.0.45.2 all this time on my SU3500. I watch megavideo on Google Chrome, Firefox 3.6.3, IE8. I found Firefox to be the fastest/smoothest player of the 3. Firefox can even get HD on megavideo to play albeit with pausing/skipping but it's watchable. I always watch megavideo using "Big Player" mode. Full screen is ok to fine depending on how many other programs are running but when I use big player windowed mode it's quite smooth in firefox event with my ESET NOD32 anti-virus set to scan everything including real-time advanced heuristics. BTW I do all of this on Power Saver mode if you look at that battery/AC icon. The only setting I found ever had an effect on flash video smoothness was the "maximum processor state" value inside the advanced power settings. Anything less than 50% makes flash choppy/stutter and maybe anything less than 100% will too. Play with your Intel graphics properties too just in case.
$300CAD at Staples/Bureau en Gros in Canada but I think that deal is either sold out or expired now http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/...ook-299-11-6-3gb-250gb-intel-core-2-a-860120/ . I know at first this price was for refurbished models but I think now new models go on sale for that price too.
40GB sounds like the X25-V value version. If that came in a larger size it might have been sufficient for my needs in my Ruby Red 1410 aswell. I needed 160GB for triple/quad-boot setup. Response time on the 250GB was find for a HDD in my opinion. I found its desktop performance equal to a 7200rpm Hitachi I was running on a Turion64x2 with Vista 32bit 3GB ram. But I have always been filling the checkbox in device manager to turn off the drive's cache buffer flushing. It says it's an advanced setting to boost performance. You can find it on the drive's" Policies" tab.
Loving my Ruby Red. Black and grey are boring because they're everywhere so you can't really tell your system apart from next when everyone has the same colour. Blue is another safe colour that everyone has. The Ruby Red is noticeable and stylish but not so bright that it screams at you or anyone else. Also the red gets women's attention lol. They perk up and go on about how cute and neat and portable and compact it is. Go figure women pay attention to the appearance before thinking about anything else in the system lol.
Not sure I'd like the white version but I do like the feautures it has more than the 1410 with SU3500. All these fingerprint people complaining I just left all the original protective plastics all over my unit and I'm leaving it that way till they all fall off. 6 months so far and they're all still sticking. The see through plastic on the lid back doesn't seem to keep fingerprints. You could also try getting a wax on protector seal of some sort like a paint on gel or something.
Rana +1 for Les. You won't have to worry about bumps and drops and physical shock ever damaging your drive while it's in use. Plus they're faster, less heat, lower power, etc. You can buy an Intel X25-V 40GB if you don't need the speed and use a cheap 500GB 5400RPM with very low power consumption for external storage. Will probably cost the same price all together. I went with an Intel X25-M 160GB because since this year started it was the best balance for size vs price with more than 120GB of space. If you can afford something more than $450 then look up maybe the OCZ Colossus? However I recommend the Corsair Force series F100 or F200 http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/31...b_ssd_featuring_the_sandforce_1200/index.html. They're big and have the most performance and I believe they promise longer lifespan than the Intel drives.
Olympic editions come in white, black/grey, and silver. White was the first model I discovered http://www.ncix.com/search/?categoryid=0&q=acer+olympic+edition -
No they don't.Olympic editions come only in silver. That Link is a bit misleading.
-
Now you are telling me???From now on is Ruby Red for me(LOL)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Actually, this is a bit confusing as ALOT of retailers post their older models as the 'Olympic Models' and I nearly fell for this, only learning this after checking with them. The Olympic Special edition, found here, is ONLY available in Olympic silver and although numbers are the same as the older models, they differ significantly and one must go right into the specifications.
The Olympic editions do differ in more ways than the exterior looks but, IMHO, this alone is significant as the Olympic paint and lacquer finish is a great deal better than the older basic black/blue which feels like it might wear over time.
I know the Olympic edition is different by way of RAM (mine is 4Gb 800mhz) even though not advertised and that there are further differences in the hd size, bt inclusion and amount of ram. I am also aware that the SU9400 included model edition still hasnt been released Stateside (1810T-6188).
So...at the end of the day make sure of what model you are getting because there are the older and the newer models of the same system. -
Special thanks from me too.I read yesterday all the info that has on ssd"s and i must say that it was very informative.I am becoming a fan of the technology. Thanks for taking the time....
-
AFAIK, all of Apple's computers (desktops and laptops) are now silver / aluminum. I haven't see a white colored Apple computer in a long time.
Oh and I don't know about everyone else, but the 90s were great for me. One of my favorite decades! -
Appreciated guys....
-
I think that means that married men have to use Sapphire Blue or Diamond Black only or they are inviting trouble.

I just ordered the 1810TZ (from sears.com) and having a heck of a time determining if it has bluetooth built in. It seems 1/2 the links I find say "yes" and 1/2 "no". Certainly not a deal breaker, but anyway to answer this question in advance?
-
This is what I wrote of earlier. The Olympic Edition does while the older edition (same number) does not.....pretty sure of it.
-
If the specs don't mention it there is no BT, but I hear a BT module is easy to install.
The 4908 and 4909 have no bluetooth built in. From about $550:

The 4140, 4093, and 4484 have BT built in, from $540

It's SO easy to install the BT module in any 1410/1810... it's only $22 in ebay!
