Personally I hid(right click on the update and hide) both of them.I am very happy so why risk things. In the past I have been burnt by Intel and Realteck and other drivers.Besides I have heard people complain about the new Intel drivers. If it works why fix it. ;)

    I saw today a 1810T with a su7300 for the same price as a su4100 (500$). Of course, it's refurbished.
Anyone ever bought a refurb notebook?? Do you think it is worth trying out? I know sometimes they come without the original box or manuals, or even the power supply, but getting a LX.PM402.001 for 500$ seems like too good a deal to pass up. What do you think?

edit : here's a response I got from them : "Refurbs are units that the manufacturer had to replace for end users within their warranty policies. There is no way for us to know how long any refurb has been in use, it can range from days to several weeks.
Refurbs are complete with all manuals and accessories that a new unit would have. All 42 in-stock units are refurbs."

edit 2 : the guy added : "Yes, these are the Olympic editions which probably accounts for the high number in stock as refurbs (I didn’t think of that before) As the official PC supplier of the Vancouver Olympics, these notebooks were probably used at the Olympic events by the people working for Vanoc then repackaged after the event – just speculation on my part but very probable"

Just remember, the SU7300 supports Intel VT-x while the SU4100 doesn't. But to 99% of the people out there, it probably doesn't matter (other than the smaller L2 cache in the SU4100). So if you're planning to run Windows 7's "Windows XP" mode on the SU4100, you won't be able to.

    Cheers,
    Kermee

I installed the BT module on my AS1410 and the LED doesn't blink at all -- but it goes on/off correctly, I kinda expect it to work like the wifi LED which blinks when there is data transfer. I searched forum and some were complaining the BT LED was always blinking. So looks that there are different BT modules on eBay.

So for an AS1410/1810 with Acer stock BT module, how does the BT LED work?

BIG benefit having a bt mouse and keyboard. I plug the laptop into my 50" big screen and can sit back on the couch away from the laptop using it on the tv....

Likewise I also have a bt stereo headset I use.

Many phones and some MP players sync via BT. Less wire hanging around..

You don't have to crack the case to install the module whenever you find out you really could use a built in BT. Its like $30 extra.

I use a BT mouse and Sync my blackberry with my 1410T via BT. You can also tether the BB via BT but data transfer is slower.

How do you flash the 1810T BIOS through DOS?

I downloaded the 3310 update and in the zip file are EXE files. One of them is in a folder titled "DOS".

Do I just put that EXE on a USB flash drive, insert and reboot? Does the 1810T's BIOS have a built in utility for running that BIOS update EXE file?

Thanks. I had just updated the BIOS when I saw your reply.

I used this guide (had to use Google Translate):
    BIOS-Update per USB-Stick

    Google Translate

Made the USB flash drive bootable, then copied the exe from the "DOS" folder onto the flash drive.

Restarted, hit F12 to get to the boot menu then selected the flash drive. Once the DOS prompt was on the screen, I typed the filename of the exe file and the updated started.

Just wanted to add my .02 to the BT discussion...

I don't have a lot of experience with BT devices but the ones I know about
eat batteries pretty fast. I got a wireless "laser" mouse from Newegg that
works with a tiny RF dongle and it's the best $20 i ever spent on a mouse.

Just wanted to mention it since i saw them on sale on the flyer again today.
(go to Newegg.com click on E-Mail Promotions, Rosewill RM-8500 at the bottom of page)

My old laptop didn't have BT either but I got a mini dongle on ebay for $5,
only used it to transfer pix from my phone.

    Hi guys,

i'm planning on buying this Acer 1810TZ but I don't know which exact model to choose, since there are two of them: the one with 2GB (1810TZ-412G25n) and the one with 3GB (1810TZ-413G32n) of memory. But my doubts are not regarding memory size, but speed. I don't care about hard disk size neither.

Since the 3GB model has two modules (2GB+1GB), does the memory work in Dual Channel mode and in the 2GB model in Single Channel mode? If so, the 2GB model should be slower (regardless of memory size). Is my assumption correct? Is there any post in this thread about this?

    Thx in advance

I am not sure I follow your thinking but you have the concept wrong. The whole memory is dual channel. The 2gb is not slower. The whole 3gb are of the same speed 667Mhz.

Yes dual channel configurations run faster than single channel, but dual channel requires sticks with the same size so 3gb will not be running in dual channel mode. Either way the only way 3gb can be worse than 2gb is if you plan to upgrade to 4gb.

    There are many.

Bluetooth mice, headphones, smartphone syncing, and others that I can't currently think of.

Sure, you can always get a BT dongle, but why settle for an annoying physical protusion and taking up use of usb port when you can get it built-in.

Even if you're not planning on using it now, you could easily encounter a circumstance where you will in future.

Go for the built-in BT now. Later is possible, but not as elegant and you'd have to take the 1810 apart to install it yourself.

And if you're worried about the battery drainage, you can easlity turn it off with the built-in switch when not in use.

There are many advantages with the internal BT module -- I have a micro USB dongle but finally added an internal one though I only use it to transfer files from cell phone and its well worth it:

    1. "Micro" is not so tiny as it looks, actually, part of the USB plug also sticks out. You can't really "plug and forget" with it.

    2. Most, if not all, cheap USB dongles are BT 2.0 only instead of 2.1. One main advantage of BT 2.1 is Secure Simple Pairing, which makes life much easier -- there're also BT 2.0 internal modules on eBay, make sure to get a 2.1.

    3. The internal BT module is Broadcom based and is compatible with official Widcomm driver. The usb dongle I have, uses CSR chip, and I'm limited to official Win7 driver -- have to pay or hack to use other drivers like IVT/Widcomm.

p.s.,Can anyone answer my question about the BT LED here?

Since we're on the subject of BT. I want to use my 1410T in my office without having to hook up the USB printer cable. Is there a dongle that I can buy that will turn my printer into a BT device? If not, I guess I could just get a wireless dongle and turn it into a network printer. My preference would be to just have notebook able to access my printer (my neighbors are printer hogs). :D

    Any suggestions?

Depends on your budget, wireless usb printer servers("wireless dongle") are not cheap. My solution is to use a dd-wrt/openwrt compatible USB wireless router and set it as the printer server to share the printer -- in my case, an HP 1020 -- in the LAN.

My suggestion, and what I use at home, is to get a external print server for ethernet. That way, you can install the client only on the PCs that you want

Just get a wireless print server or use this as an excuse to upgrade your printer. For a cheap solution if you have a desktop connected to the printer you can share the printer from the desktop on a network, but the desktop will need to be on in order to print.

Love my HP all in one photosmart with wireless networking. I can print from any computer in the house at anytime.

congrats, headala. let me know how it goes.
    mine arrived yesterday.

everthing works, but win7 pro 32-bit is installed on the hdd (legit)
and the backup disks are marked 32-bit.

it was advertised as win7 home prem. 64-bit.
and the sticker on the bottom is win7 home prem.
    "AS1810TZ-4906-U W7HP/SU4100/4G/320/6L/BU US"

the guy at tech support gave me some bs about how it was
    advertised wrong on their site.

i will be doing a clean install of 64-bit anyway to get rid of the crapware.

    Hello there guys,

I finally bought this laptop, and I've made a fresh windows 7 installation.

Now I've a a doubt. When we install the Win 7, which drivers the Win 7 installs for the devices on the 1810TZ?

Even if he installs any drives, should I install new ones? Or maybe it is better let those installed and then install only those one that the win 7 couldn't install?

If I should install others than those the win 7 installed, which one should I grab? And for those the win 7 didn't installed, which one should I install?

    Best regards,
    Charles

Go to Acer's support site and get drivers for anything that doesn't work properly. I think I had to get synaptics, one for the web cam, and I think something else. If they don't offer a Windows 7 driver, use the Vista driver.

On a side note, I think it's funny how Microsoft has the hardware manufactures finishing their product. When I install Ubuntu, everything works. In most cases, it works just as well as it does on Windows and I don't have to chase down the drivers. Not that installing Windows drivers is difficult. It's actually really easy, but it's something I don't have to do with Linux anymore. (Even 4-5 years back, the only problems I had were with Broadcom wireless cards.)

I'm not saying this to bash Windows. Even though I don't really use it, I think Windows 7 is pretty slick. If i weren't so satisfied with Ubuntu, I would happily use Windows 7. I'm just saying I find it odd that Windows has the manufactures paying for an unfinished product when they could get a finished one for free.

Although the drivers you will need are listed on the Acer site, you might want to take the time to read through the timelines tweaks thread and get the more recent drivers from the component manufacturers.

    I can't confirm that.
Perhaps there are different BT modules. Mine is a "Broadcom 2046 Bluetooth 2.1+EDR USB device". The LED does not blink when data is transferred.

    Going back a few pages...
about tethering a Verizon smart phone for 3G internet access.

I just picked up a Droid Incredible (for my wife, actually).
When I installed Verizon's tethering app,
the app asked for me to sign up for an additional
monthly fee. I think it was $19.99 per month.

So I installed pdaNet on my 1810TZ and downloaded
the pdaNet app onto the Droid Incredible.

Worked perfectly at good speed and with no additional cost.
I tethered using a USB cable, but pdaNet also allows Bluetooth
tethering, which I have not yet tried.

Look here for their various free 3G tethering options.
So nice knowing my 1810TZ can be online almost
anywhere now (when my wife lets me use her Incredible).

Looking at getting an iStyles skin for my blue 1810T. The 1810T and 1410T have the same physical dimensions, right? Looks like they have a universal 11.6" version to choose for each skin.

I'm looking at either of these:

Now, in the pictures it looks like the skin covers almost all the lid AND even extends over the two hinges attached to the lid. Is this true?

Also, it says it comes with a pieces that covers the wrist area. Do you have to remove the nice Intel and Windows stickers that come with the 1810T or can you stick the wrist area piece right over them?
