Hi,
as already stated, the US model numbers are not as easy to interpret. Acer USA has a list of model# and configuration here: ( 1410 on Acer.us) Then click on "configurations".
From what I've seen there, the 2xxx models have either a Celeron 743 or SU2300 (which is the better one), the 8xxx model has a SU3500 single core.
Other differences are: size of the HDD (160 or 250 GB), colour, warranty (some configurations have 2 years of warranty). All 2xxx models should be equipped with 2x1GB RAM, the 8xxx should have a single 2 GB module.

I think you just have to plow through the configurations details for the country where you are purchasing. You will find each color has a different part number, and within the colors the different CPUs have a different part number, then whether or not BT is built in gives you another variation (I don't think there is a decoder ring to take you from a part to a USA configuration). If you read through you will find a lot of similarities. Most of the other items, except perhaps RAM, is about the same. Some may have a different HD size.
I think its best to have a color and CPU or feature set in mind and look for those. I ended up printing out the sheet and circling the ones that would be adequate. Since I wanted BT, that eliminated many from the get go. Then, after your painstaking research, you will be faced with not all models being currently available in the stores and each store/outlet has a different model lineup, and sometimes significant differences in prices....
I found the following site to be helpful in finding what I wanted and comparing price/availability between a couple different parts (it is a USA site):
Best Prices for Acer Aspire 1810T-8638 LX.SA202.006 | Cazoodle Shopping Search for Electronics
This is specific for the 1810 8638, but you should be able to search for any model and part number.
In my case, after all the reading, the 8638 was the only model being sold in the USA at the time that had factory BT.
Good luck
Oh I think the 1810 comes standard with more RAM, I think 4GB in most models where the 1410 has 2GB and the hard drive is 320 vs 250GB. That and the better processors may be worth the price difference, if you need the horse power and memory. -
Can anyone help me with installing Windows XP on my 1810TZ? I'm trying to do this using a USB stick (and the WinToFlash tool) as I don't have an external DVD drive.
I can set Windows setup to run but it won't detect the hard drive. I believe I need to slipstream the right SATA driver into the XP install, but the driver I downloaded from Acer "AHCI_Intel_8.8.0.1009_XPx86_A" doesn't work (I used nLite to do the slipstream).
After a bit of reading around it seems what I need is the 'text mode' SATA driver, but I can't find one for the 1810. Any ideas?
If I use an external DVD drive instead of a flash drive is it any more likely to work? -
I'm pretty sure you need to change your bios setting to from AHCI to IDE to load XP. Try that and see if you can get it to work.

I would buy the SU2300 if you are buying the 1410T. I think that the only model with the SU2300 that is still for sale is the Black 1410T. Check out Amazon. The 1410T is now called the 751. SU2300 versions are coming.

Don't you mean 752?

Yeah, but that digit makes a difference. The 751 is a turd!
-
BTW I did this using Thaiphoon Burner, I need help solving this problem.
-
Perhaps simply another artificial limitation introduced by Intel?
I am wrong if there are SU3500 based systems that successfully work with DDR800.
Michael -
Are you serious? I thought I read other users with SU3500 managed to overclock the ram. I'm still suspicious that these inaccessible timings have an effect on the modules running at 800MHz.

I have two of these in my computer: Micro Center - Crucial 2GB DDR2-800 (PC-6400) DDR2 SO-DIMM Memory Module 649528739179
-
Okay, then I was wrong.
Perhaps "simply manipulating" the SPD does not always work
Michael -
that link doesn't seem to be working ohiomoto, could you maybe post the SPD details from whatever program you use that can display it. It's just so i can get the actual manufacturer part# ohiomoto. The part number you posted for your modules don't pull up anything on the Crucial website.
You're not wrong micheal, SPD tells the chipset what timings to follow for up to 3 different speeds. SPD can be accurate or wrong, when wrong the ram won't work on autodetect. SPD by standard is underclocked from DRAM chips true performance limits for sake of safety/guaranteeing compatibility. The exception to this is RAM sold as extreme performance RAM. The extra premium you pay on such ram is for the testing to program SPD with precise accuracy to the DRAM chip limits. When a module is a "good overclocker" it just means the SPD was well underclocked. If you can overclock well past DDR400, DDR2-800/1066 then it means you have trully very fast DRAM chips (uncommonly low latency DRAM chips).
I still suspect these timings are my issue if you'll notice my screenshot of stock DDR2-800 these timings are faster on the 800MHz
I attached some DDR2 dumps I also have DDR1 dumps on my laptop aswell.Code:Address and CMD Setup Time Before Clock (tIS): 0.20 ns Address and CMD Hold Time After Clock (tIH): 0.27 ns Data Input Setup Time Before Strobe (tDS): 0.10 ns Data Input Hold Time After Strobe (tDH): 0.17 ns Max skew between DQS and all DQ signals (tDQSQ): 0.24 ns Max Read Data Hold Skew Factor (tQHS): 0.34 ns

I may have just found the answer. Those remaining SPD values are stored in Hex addresses 20h-23h, 2Ch, and 2Dh. Thaiphoon Burner v6.8.1.0 lets you edit the Hexa-Decimal SPD dump in the Hex editor and when you click on each value in the layout it displays the Hex address, value, and the corresponding detail full name as displayed in the Report Browser. I'll try editing these values later to see this works. I posted a screenshot of the new version.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the hell you guys are talking about. All I know is that I have 4GB of DDR2-800 (PC-6400) RAM in my computer and guys in the timeline tweaks thread were over-clocking their stock DDR2-667 RAM to 800mhz.
Also, here is some info from Crucial regarding the AS1410:
-
I bought 4GB 800mhz. I have never been so happy that I did.

Has anyone run into an issue where HDMI audio is not an option on their 1410?

ohiomoto there's more to it than that. The speed you get default from a RAM module (green stick with black chips) is regularly underclocked speeds compared to the actual speeds the DRAM (black chips alone) manufacturers supply. In other words the whole reason RAM can be overclocked is because it's commonly sold with crippled/underclocked speed. The overclocking room that can be done at stock voltage is actually just tweaking to actual designed performance limits.
Manufacturers often have overstock of higher speeds so they cripple it to fill the demands for lower speeds instead of spending more money/time to build produce from scratch lower speeds and still end up with overstock/left over higher speed.
The only other way I can explain is I had Viking Modules and Samsung modules, both were uses the exact same DRAM chips. So regardless of whatever speed difference the 2 modules were labelled they both can run at the exact same top speed. I'm not talking about the backwards compatible defaulting to the lower speed of a pair either. -
I understand the reason RAM can be over-clocked. What I don't understand is why you guys would think that the AS1410/1810 couldn't use pc-6400 and what all of this stuff about SPD is. I use SPDs on my bicycles. That's all I know about it.
-
I had an SPD once. It 6 weeks to go away.

Get the latest driver from Intel.com and see if things improve

I am not perfectly sure about that. Looking at shops like Newegg or others, DDR2-667 is still the majority.
I admit, there is nearly no price difference between DDR2-667 and DDR2-800.
Or a chip is not good enough to run at DDR2-800 so it will be designated for DDR2-667 modules.
The market share of DDR2-667 aftermarket modules is approx. 55%. I can't believe that manufacturers of memory modules underclock 50% of their production. Most modules are simply not good enough for 800 speed.

Thanks for the response Michael, been there and done that unfortunately.. Acer wants me to perform a system restore to see if that resolves it, I was hoping it would be something small that I overlooked.

Look pretty nice... I'm debating picking up a 1410 now or waiting for the 721. 721 looks to have a little bit less of a battery life, otherwise looks like an improvement. Any word on the pricing on the 1551 yet? I tried looking around didn't find it myself

:GEEK: I got my 2 different modules to overclock my way by simply editing the timing tables without cloning another module. The last factor that was limiting my modules to 667MHz was the SDRAM Access Time from Clock (tAC) Hex address 0Ah. It was originally set to 45 (0.45 ns) and as soon as I changed it to value 40 (0.40 ns) my laptop booted up stating 800MHz. You have to use the Hex editor Thaiphoon Burner to change that value; along with the 6 other timing values I mentioned in a previous post I thought were inaccessible.
Turns out everything is editable via the Hex editor in both Thaiphoon Burner versions; the difference is the older version requires pressing the enter key to apply the changed value. If you you move to another address without pressing enter in the old version the original value will return and no changes will take place. Also editing via the Hex editor updates the modified Hex addresses immediately to the SPD on the RAM module, in both versions, without needing to do a full write of the entire SPD. So don't reboot or press enter until you're sure you want to try your new values.Code:--------[ EVEREST Ultimate Edition Report ]----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version EVEREST v5.50.2100 Benchmark Module 2.5.292.0 Homepage http://www.lavalys.com/ Report Type Report Wizard [ TRIAL VERSION ] Computer LAPTOP Generator Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 6.0.6002 (Vista RTM) Date 2010-05-25 Time 10:23 --------[ Overclock ]--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CPU Properties: CPU Type Mobile Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 CPU Alias Penryn-3M CPU Stepping R0 Engineering Sample No CPUID CPU Name Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Solo CPU U3500 @ 1.40GHz CPUID Revision 0001067Ah CPU VID 0.9125 V CPU Speed: CPU Clock 1396.5 MHz (original: [ TRIAL VERSION ] MHz) CPU Multiplier 7x CPU FSB 199.5 MHz (original: 200 MHz) Memory Bus 399.0 MHz DRAM:FSB Ratio 12:6 CPU Cache: L1 Code Cache 32 KB L1 Data Cache [ TRIAL VERSION ] L2 Cache 3 MB (On-Die, ECC, ASC, Full-Speed) Motherboard Properties: Motherboard ID <DMI> Motherboard Name Acer Aspire 1410 Chipset Properties: Motherboard Chipset Intel Cantiga GS45 Memory Timings 6-6-6-18 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) DIMM1: Samsung M4 70T5663EH3-CE6 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (6-6-6-18 @ 400 MHz) (5-5-5-15 @ 333 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz) DIMM3: Kingston 99U5295-011.A00LF [ TRIAL VERSION ] BIOS Properties: System BIOS Date 09/24/09 Video BIOS Date 05/10/09 DMI BIOS Version v1.3303 Graphics Processor Properties: Video Adapter Intel GL40/GM45/GM47/GS45 Chipset - Graphics Controller 0 [B-3] GPU Code Name Cantiga-GM (Integrated 8086 / 2A42, Rev 07) GPU Clock 320 MHz --------[ Sensor ]------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sensor Properties: Sensor Type CPU, ACPI Temperatures: CPU 47 °C (117 °F) CPU Diode 47 °C (117 °F) Voltage Values: CPU Core 0.91 V --------[ Motherboard ]------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Motherboard Properties: Motherboard ID <DMI> Motherboard Name Acer Aspire 1410 Front Side Bus Properties: Bus Type Intel AGTL+ Bus Width 64-bit Real Clock 200 MHz (QDR) Effective Clock 800 MHz Bandwidth 6400 MB/s Memory Bus Properties: Bus Type Dual DDR2 SDRAM Bus Width 128-bit DRAM:FSB Ratio 12:6 Real Clock 400 MHz (DDR) Effective Clock 800 MHz Bandwidth [ TRIAL VERSION ] MB/s Chipset Bus Properties: Bus Type Intel Direct Media Interface Motherboard Manufacturer: Company Name Acer Inc. After I stress test this RAM for stability I'll try tweaking those other 6 timing values and see if I can boost performance. So far from making tAC=0.45ns down to 0.40ns I got a 200MB/s boost in the Read benchmark. Do you guys believe the Windows Memory Diagnostic in the Windows Recovery Environment is sufficient for stress testing or should I use Prime95?
Another discovery I made last night is you will get double the battery life if you limit your laptop to a single memory DIMM/Stick/Module. I have included screen shots. This means if you don't need dual channel but prefer longer battery life it's worth buying a single 1x4GB So-DIMM.Attached Files:

I'm late to this thread but now that flash 10 is out, I installed it but Hulu STILL won't play fullscreen in 360P without jerking.
this is a 1410 with the SU3500, stock
what can i do to fix this? -
try the flash 10.1 RC5 came out less than a week ago, they've been releasing a new RC every 7-14 days lol Adobe Labs - Adobe Flash Player 10.1 I can watch youtube 720p smooth via the HDMI port on my 1410-8803 with SU3500 to a Samsung SyncMaster 2053BW set to 1680x1050 75Hz.
As for Hulu IDK, I'm in Canada and never learned how/where to use a proxy server yet so I don't get to watch from Hulu. Just tvshow-links.blogspot.com, surfthechannel.com, megavideo.com, divxden.com, and whatever other sites the first 2 reference. -
Keep and eye out for the the Aspire One 752. It looks like it will be identical to the current 1410.

Oops, I actually meant to write 752 instead of 721 on my original post, thats the one i was interested in

Congrats
Another discovery I made last night is you will get double the battery life if you limit your laptop to a single memory DIMM/Stick/Module.[/quote]This is physically impossible.Windows battery life estimation is simply a joke. Battery bar gives a much more realistic guess.
According to Battery Bar, my 1810TZ (with 2+1 GB RAM, SU4100) needs ~5W idle. The rest is math (would result in a theoretical battery life time of 12:35 on this system).
The difference in power consumption between 1x 4GB and 2x2 GB is only marginal. The price difference is not.
1x4GB: 186 USD ( Newegg.com - Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory Model KVR800D2S6/4G)
2x2GB: 100 USD ( Newegg.com - Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory Model KVR800D2S6K2/4G)
I guess, you get a very fine battery for these 86 bucks

Sorry I didn't see your post before. SPD = Serial Presence Detect, it's the single tiniest black square chip on each memory module. This chip stores usually up to 3 tables/speed settings but can probably store more. It also stores all identification info about your memory stick. It started being placed on memory I believe around the 486->Pentium1 era. SPD tells your chipset what speed settings are safe to use to make your memory work. Fastest speed first and additional speeds in descending order. It is an Electronically Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM) meaning it can be written to once during special operation, and then on only read from during normal use/operation. Often especially in the last 15-20yrs it's an Electronically Editable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) meaning you can write to it many times by special operations and always read from during normal operation.
@micheal:
Vista's native battery meter tells me 6hrs on power saver, 4hrs on balanced, 2hrs on high performance. I tested out the power saver rundown time manually and it matched to within the hour maybe even within 30mins. I'm using the 1410 with SU3500 and 4400mAH battery. Going by those self-proven estimates the battery life I posted when I took out 1 of the ram DIMMs I was using should be accurate. 11-13hrs on power saver. I will be testing it out sometime tonight. -
PROOF! although not really double in the end.

The values given by Windows internal battery guess tool are extremely variable. Reason is, that it thinks, the system will keep the current discharge rate until shutdown (or the battery is empty). This discharge rate is extremely variable. Even when doing nothing (in Powersave mode) it will vary about 1.5 W (or even more) around an average value of 5.5 W. Thus, Windows guestimation tool will show highly variable values also, changing by 50% within 5 minutes.
How did you test? Perhaps Battery Eater ( http://www.batteryeater.com) gives more reliable results
Sorry for being thick - I don't see any proof for something
(Yes, I see the pictures)
Michael -
the reason the battery life in vista's native tool varies is because the discharge rate while on battery also varies. Lavalys Everest Ultimate v5.50 shows me the discharge rate changes every second and it jumps up to 7-11W when I do activity like going through the start menu and launching an app.
my rundown test was simple, I turned the screen down to 20% as I always use it indoors. I disabled LCD shutoff, disabled sleep timer, disabled critical and low battery actions, I took note of what time I started using the battery at 100% charge and how long vista estimated the battery will last. I either left the laptop idle or I was browsing forums but no videos, no music, I think I had flashblock already installed by then too. Most like Wifi off and LAN connected but possible I was using WiFi. The battery ran out within the hour and possibly within the 30mins of the estimated battery life. 6hrs, and this was when I was using the stock 5400RPM Toshiba drive too.
The pictures show you the discharge rate and capacity of the battery at the moment I took the shot. I've seen discharging rate go as low as just over 4000mW, while Lavalys Everest Ultimate v5.50 was running the entire time, kept on that power management page.
the previous 2 photos demonstrate the difference in power consumption when the HDMI is in use with just the wallpaper displayed vs no HDMI connected both with a single 2GB Samsung running at DDR2-667. The 2 pictures in this post show the diff in power consumption with the 2GB Samsung at 800MHz vs 667MHzAttached Files:

can anyone help me figure out why my audio is constantly stuttering in DivX Web Player, so far it's done it for one video in either the local DivX Plus Player and WMP. I'm using Vista Home Premium x86 SP2.

Hi,
That's exactly what I wrote. Unfortunately, this method is not useful to find out if a certain change of the system configuration has an effect on battery life.
So does Battery Bar which is what I am using.
But this has a totally different method of calculating (or estimating/guessing) the battery life. From my experience, the results are much more realistic than those of Windows guesstimator (same with Win7 btw).
Not precise enough to detect any effect on battery life. There was too much variation in usage. That's why I suggested some automated test (like Battery Eater) since this warrants exactly the same usage scenario.
These are good settings apart from the low and critical battery events. These prevent your battery from deep discharging (LiIon batterys don't like deep discharges at all).
To shorten the test time, you may adjust the low battery settings in a way that the system hibernates at - let's say - 50% battery level. You can even create a custom power plan for these tests.
Michael -
you're leaving things out michael, first off the rates displayed in lavalys everest are equal to what vista shows me that's the 2nd reason why I know Vista's estimates are acurate. Both the vista's battery bar and Lavalys Everest showed me the exact same battery life to the second and both updated simultaneously.
During my run down test I kept the usage the same. I think I left the system running idle with no activity I just can't be certain because I know for the last 2hrs of battery life I went out and left it idle. Normally when doing tests I keep the environment identical from start to finish to make sure my tests are repeatable. I just didn't record what I was doing so I left room for the possibility that I was browsing forums. I know for certain I did not play any videos or music, just forums like redflagdeals and notebookreview if any activity at all. I'm confident I left the laptop with no programs running and just the desktop shown however. BTW I had screen saver disabled too.
Good point about the 50% hibernation. The reason I turned off the power saver features was so I can see if vista's battery bar is accurate right to complete battery depletion under light system activity like browsing web pages without animation, music, video. I wasn't concerned with battery life at absolute idle because at that point I'd just put the system to sleep or hibernate, I was concerned about maximizing battery life during usage like when outdoors.
Anyway for my laptop vista's battery meter and lavalys everest discharge rate/battery life are identical and both update simultaneously. -
The discharge rates are okay. But the way Windows and probably Everest (if Everest does calculate at all) calculate the battery life is wrong. Otherwise you wouldn't have such strong variations.
For a useful prediction of battery life, you need a statistical approach.
--> http://osirisdevelopment.com/BatteryBar/index.html
That's normal. Everest is simply displaying the data acquired and guestimated by Windows
Michael -
Michael is right. We need a controlled test with something like Battery Eater to illustrate the differences with RAM modules. I might try taking one of mine out and running it when I get home at the end of the weekend. But remember that a 1x4GB stick will use more energy then a 1x2GB. Either way, the CPU\motherboard\screen are using far more energy then the RAM - the only way battery life could possibly double would be if somehow the RAM was using 100% of the battery, when in reality it is only using a small fraction. I would suspect something on the order of 15 minutes, not double the life.
-
Went through Kingston's website and had a look into the data sheets they provide for their Value RAM series.
I found some figures about power consumption in operation mode:
KVR800D2S6/2G * 2GB 256M x 64-Bit DDR2-800 * CL6 200-Pin SODIMM: 1.584W
KVR800D2S6/4G * 4GB 512M x 64-Bit DDR2-800 * CL6 200-Pin SODIMM: 1.440W
That means: replacing 2 2 GB modules by one 4 GB module will decrease the power consumption by ~1.5W under full load. With light usage, the effect might be much smaller. But I think, 5-10% improvement in battery life seem to be realistic.

Interesting, I did not know that the 1810TZ could do 2 x 4 GB of RAM?
I do not know if it was already mentioned here, but I got the Packard Bell Dot M/U which seems to be very similar to the 1810TZ and 1410.
Would it be possible to add this fact, for reference, to this thread? Sorry if it was already mentioned before.
Packard Bell Dot M/U - Netbook Reviews
Those Packard Bell Dot M/U systems with the SU4100 Dual Core Pentium 1.3 GHz with 4 GB RAM installed running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and 320 GB HD sell for about 550 Swiss Francs in Switzerland (about 500 USD).
Despite the fact that I have huge issues with the HDMI out (picture goes on and off all the time which is very annoying, works fine with the VGA out), the Packard Bell Dot M/U is really cool.
According to my power meter, the system uses about 13 watts in idle (internal screen is off). -
Yes, the reason why it is similar is because Acer bought out Gateway, EMachines and Packard Bell and releases machines with all three brandings of them. The Gateway brand is used in the U.S and Japan as far as I know and Packard Bell is used in Europe.
The Packard Bell Dot M/U is identical to the Gateway EC14/18 series, only the logo is different of course.
Gateway Dot M/U
Gateway EC14/18
The Gateway is then mostly similar to the Acer models, slightly different in design though, such as the touchpad being slightly recessed on the Gateway vs flush on the Acer, having a matte bezel around the screen vs glossy on the Acer, having a textured design on the palmrest vs brushed design on the Acer, etc. -

I must admit I like the gateway / packard bell better than the acer. My girlfriend has the packard bell one, with the su3500, but only the small 4400mah battery..
-
I agree. I find it to look more professional, stylish and high-end, just my opinion. I find it funny considering that Acer bought out Gateway and I like their rebranded design better than the original one!
-
Hi,
I am not aware if anyone really tested this - mainly due to the ridiculously prices of 4GB DDR2 modules.
You simply stumbled upon a theoretical discussion
Michael -
Stop talking about battery life. Go make a separate forum, we don't need 300 pages devoted to people talking about it. It's not directly related to the topic...... We all know the battery life isn't that great, that the reading isn't that accuracy, but god, we paid less than 400$ for this awesome laptop,...how about something else to talk about?
-
I wouldn't call them idiots, but I do agree a new thread should be started regarding battery life. I keep getting email confirmation of new posts and I click on them only to be disappointed that it's more talk about RAM and battery life.
