hey sorry i read through this but didn't really get it... so i can legally download a clean and up to date version of Win7 if I prove I already have a legally obtained version? Shouldn't the download links then be from M$?

You can download the OEM version of your licensed Windows program and install it on your computer. You can then activate by phone using the key on your license or by reloading the OEM Certificate and OEM Key. I have a better description here. http://forum.notebookreview.com/6465732-post1613.html.

it is from MS: Microsoft ISO Image for Digital River?s Windows 7 Offer Now Available

It isn't the OEM-Version but in my opinion it is absolutely legal, because in the end you'll have nothing else installed but Windows 7 HP as you received it with Acer. Only without bloatware. I have to tell u that I myself didn't use the acer-key, because I got a free version via MSDNAA, so I didn't bother about the activation at all. But I read that even if you sell your OEM-Key, you can easily activate it on the new PC afterwards, you have to call microsoft (ask for bill ;)) and tell them why the hardware changed. So I think it will work in this case as well, as can be read in the link of Bronsky... good luck!

Heading to Wash DC this weekend and was surprised when I decided that the 3820TG is just too big to toss into an overnight bag. Looks like the 1410T is coming out of semi-retirement for the weekend.

Hi alla and THANKS for all the help regarding noise from the speakers/headphones.

It seems you are on the right track. I haven´t lost all disturbing static yet - but a big improvement disabeling all extra-settings.

Will let you know - but this is probably it..

    Thanks!

Sort of have a problem here. I just noticed that when I go to:

    Control Panel -> Folder Options
    - "View" tab"
    - Uncheck the "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" option

My 1810T's card reader still does not show up in the Computer folder when there is no card inserted into it.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there a fix for it?

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 w/ all available Windows Updates installed.

Should I install 32 or 64 bit W7 premium on my 1410? I'm mostly doing movies and web browsing.

I would recommend to install the version that your notebook came with. I installed a 32bit version although the notebook came with a 64bit OS and I had a lot of trouble with the drivers and apps from the acer site, 64bit works perfectly fine now.

there's no real difference in speed atm between 64bit/32bit.

Hey everyone, I'm checking into updating the graphics and sound drivers for my 1810T I got back in December. I really love the machine so far.

Acer's site, however, seems to have only very outdate driver software available (Intel GMA drivers v8.15.10.1855, which I have now). Is it ok to get the drivers directly from Intel and Realtek? If so, are these the correct ones:

    Video:
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows 7* 64 and Windows Vista* 64 (exe)

    Audio:
    Realtek

Also do I need to do anything to uninstall the old drivers first, or can they be overwritten? Thanks in advance.

Yes these are the latest drivers in both cases. You don't have to necesserily unistall the old ones.

For the video drivers is it better to use that updating tool on Intel's site, or just download what I need and manually install?

I do it manually.I see no need for a tool. It's so easy.Keep in mind that because these are video drivers your screen will do weird things during installation.

I have done it and there were no problems. The Realtek first unistalls the old driver itself and then installs. But hey if you want peace of mind unistall them first.

I just picked up an 1810T with SU9400 over an 1830T because my number one priority was battery life. However, with the machine being built Nov. 4, 2009 I'm a little worried that the battery may have lost a bunch of it's charge already (20%?), and I haven't even used it! If that's the case, then I might as well get the 1830.

Anyone have a similar experience where the build of the machine was old and it affected the battery? (in my case I just charged it last night, so I don't yet know how long my battery life is)

    Thanks

Thanks a lot for the info. It will be hard for me to depart with this thing regardless - right now it's faster than my HDX Dragon! I better see what's up with that.

I've used it about 6 hrs. on battery power between now and my last post and it is still showing over an hour left, but I will download battery bar and run it before my return period expires.

    Thanks again.

The 1810T just has an Intel card for wifi, right? The whole "Acer Nplify" thing is just a marketing gimmick?

Intel's Driver Update utility just autodetected it as an Intel Wifi 5100a/g/n, but the sticker on the PC labels it as Acer Nplify a/b/g/n

New user here; bought the 1810tz Olympic Edition from The Source ($469) and have been testing it for a week. I'm a Mac/Linux user, and to not modify the computer too much until I keep it for sure, I'm using mostly with Ubuntu 10.10 beta on a USB stick, and sometimes with the Win 7 installed. I'm glad I found this forum; a wealth of knowledge on this unit. I've spent the last few hours going through all the posts to see which ones are relevant to my question.

My only concern with my 1810 is fan noise. I've read the postings on fan noise and I already know about 1810tray. I'll ultimately want a Linux version, but I can't get that yet until I actually install 10.10 on my drive. My main concern is with the type of noise the fan seems to make. It has an unusual buzz, like it's either unbalanced or nicking something. Is this normal?

With regard to frequency it comes on, does one have to worry about a "low" setting in 1810tray resulting in damage to the CPU?

Finally, if I keep this computer, I plan to install an SSD in it; I have an OCZ Vertex in my current netbook (Wind U100) and would use it. Les referred to instructions for doing this back in an April posting - can Les or someone else provide me a link to these instructions?

    Thanks, all.

Thanks, ohiomoto. I don't know for sure whether the "buzz" is unusual, but I was concerned enough to go back to the dealer and ask them for another machine. I should have it on Wednesday, and then I'll have something to compare the first one with.

You say that your fan is silent on battery power with acerhdf. Do you mean it doesn't run at all, or that it's quiet enough not to be a bother. Wouldn't the 1810TZ ultimately get too hot with no fan running at all?

It runs so slow that you have to put your ear next to the fan to notice it, That was with Ubuntu 9.10 using acerhdf. I've been using Peppermint One and Peppermint Ice the past 6-7 weeks (both are based on Ubuntu 10.04) and it also quiet on battery power. I have not installed acerhdf on either Peppermint installs. I haven't used Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 enough to know if the reduced fan noise is a function of the 10.04 distro or something Peppermint did with it. You may want to take one of the Peppermint distros for a spin and see if you notice a difference.

That's very encouraging! I have tried Peppermint One on my older MSI U100 netbook as well as a virtual machine on my Mac. I like the concept, but was disappointed that it wasn't faster booting. But I will ultimately try it on the 1810. My favourite fast, light distro is CrunchBang. The Statler version, based on Debian, is alpha because of Debian testing state, but I have found it to be very stable. However, power management on Ubuntu seems better than on Statler.

I want to get back to the HDD topic: has anyone a hint on a the most quiet HDD available at the moment? I bought myself a Hitachi 5k500.B which supposedly should be the most quiet one but for me it's still a bit loud, especially when reading/writing - or is it just because the case is so thin that you hear everything?
