Thanks for that, it took like 1.46 minutes to swap it out! Actually thanks for the help and hints, if I was not prepared for the ribbon, I think I may have been scratching my head for at least 10 minutes to really sort things out. My last two laptops never had the ribbon, so it was new to me.

I'm super happy with the 1810tz, I am really surprised how quick the su4100 processor really is. It's not quite as fast as my core2duo 2.53, but that's to be expected. But Soooooo much faster than a friends Atom powered HP 11.6. :D

My only con thus far, besides the bil. Keyboard, is those Rat Buggers at Acer put two 1gb Ram sticks in it!! So with the 2 GB stick that I already had, I am now running 3GB. In time I will add one more though. (The links where I did my research for my lil notebook said it had a single 2gb stick at 667)((mine has two 1gb at 800).

Over all, I am still super happy. I love the Silver Finish, my Bluetooth mouse connected with no problem. My WD Scorpio Black 500GB hard drive is faster than the original HD, probably runs just a little hotter, but nothing severe.

The fan is not noisy as some have indicated. This is my first run on with the battery, so we will see how this goes, so far 4 hours with 66.1% left. The battery was the 62,120nWh. So for 399, and some parts I had laying around, I am uber happy. I can now say, that I would endorse Acer, as quality product at a great price!!

Thanks again for the info guys, and now I will check some of the other forums for suggestions and tweeks!

    Cheers,
    CC

As far as I know all 1810TZ came with1+1 gb...You don't need more than 3gb.You will not see any difference unless you are using some exotic programs that require a lot of memory..To see the notebook at it's full potential(and it's a very fast notebook)you must wipe out all the crapware(mc affee etc)or do a clean install. The diference is more than noticable. If you have any trouble with noice download 1810tray(from the corresponding thread here in nbr)and the notebook will be absolutely quiet...Believe me the 1810tz for $399 is a real steal.

ps:Ebay is full of American keyboards for $10-$15...It takes 1'.42" :D to change it.It's as easy as the HDD.You tube has plenty of videos on how to do it.

LOL, ok, I believe you on the time frames to switch things out...... :D

After I put the new HD in, I did do a clean install of windows 7, and only added a few of the original ACER apps off of the drivers disc. Yes, it was full of Bloatware!

I am still very surprised how fast the 1810tz really is. To be honest, I never would have thought a 1.3 processor would be this efficient. I am going to look for a keyboard right now on e-bay. And will take your advice on the RAM. I agree so far, that the extra 1gb really does not seem needed so far, and to pay another 40.00 for 1 gb, really does not seem worth it. I will try to find the 1810tray thing you mentioned.

    Thanks again!!

Stay away from Acer's eRecovery. It contains all the bloatware.Clean install is the best. All drivers and apps are in Acer's site(acer support -drivers).It takes minutes to install them.

    Thanks for the links!!!

The 1410 keyboard fits the 1810 right?

Acer Aspire 1410T 1410 11' Laptop Keyboard US Black New on eBay.ca (item 170554369022 end time 17-Nov-10 07:47:48 EST)

Saw that one on e-bay as well. The shipping to Canada from the link you posted was 22.00. both seem to have 6 month warranties. One is from China, and one is from US, probably from China though....

Also is there a trick to get the 1810 tray to open?

after I unzip, there are about 16 icons, a tray1810.exe, I try to open and I get an error? The same with the other files like devcon.exe, and devcon64.exe

I think I am missing something??????

Yes the 1410 is fine(same with the 1810)

What error?Does it say error? When you open 1810tray.exe you are supposed to see a temperature in your tray...Right click on the temp and you will understand. My advice is to leave it on auto(it controls temps automatically there). It starts automatically when you boot.Great application.

    Yea, when I open the 1810Tray.exe I get"Status Error!!_DLL_Not_Found"???

I use winzip to unzip it??? click open on the icon for 1810tray. I even tried running as administrator. Not sure what's going on?? Obviously something I'm not doing

I'm using a 64bit version of windows 7, could that be a problem?

OK, Not too sure what I did, but I restarted my computer, unzipped 1810tray like I have the last three times, and this time it worked....

I think I did a few updates earlier that required a restart, and I never did them as I was trying to do a full battery cycle test while it was on.......Will try again once I get everything loaded!)

So I can only guess that was the issue????

Regardless, now I have it. Thanks for the pointers thundernet.

A quick question though? Does the Acer 3820 have an optical drive? And I see by the specs in some of your trailers that it looks like it probably can game? Am I right? And I see in Bronsky's post that it only weighs 3.9 lbs. Looks like it may be an all around laptop!!

    Cheers

I was just wondering, when you get your Gateway from buy.com; can you pass along if it's black or red, and if it does have BT? I was thinking of ordering one of these for my daughter who lives in the US. Might be handy to have something small like this to take with her to University next fall. I'm so happy with my 1810tz! So I am sure the Gateway would be more than perfect for her!

    ;) Thanks in advance

Sure it should be here today. I'll be sending it back to Acer/Gateway as soon as it gets here to have Windows removed so I won't be turning it on, but I'll confirm the specs on the box and color.

Hello, I'm new in this forum and I have this laptop (Acer 1810TZ with SU4100 and 3gb Ram DDR2 667mhz) and would like to clarify a doubt with you who are more experienced. I want to upgrade the RAM. It is best to put 4 gb ddr3 1066mhz dual channel (2x2gb) or 6 gb ddr2 800mhz single channel (4gb in just 1 slot and 2gb in other slot)? What is best without taking into account the financial aspect?
Thank you for your attention and hope for your advice

I don't think you can put DDR3 in the 1810. The best you can do is 800mhz DDR2. I have 4 GB of 800mhz DDR2 in my 1410T and it works fine.

Thanks for the reply. I put that question because the chipset GS45 supports up to 1033mhz in memorys.

Now, if it is possible or not, I do not know, I have no knowledge for that, so here I am trying to learn more. I read in this same forum that is at least possible to do an upgrade in Ram up to 8gb.

Bronsky your Ram is only one slot or two? And is dual channel?Do you recommend dual channel or just one slot?

    Thanks for the clarification

    It's dual channel.
More memory speed = less battery
Two equal SIMM = more memory speed with equal battery.

So use two 2GB SIMM of 667MHz (more battery) or 800MHz (little less battery)

That is correct, but it's up to the computer manufacturer to install either DDR2 or DDR3 slots. The 1810 series has DDR2 slots.

IMO, there is no real-world noticeable difference in performance if you use 667 or 800 MHz modules.
Not all modules might work, but this is the usual compatibility problem.
Apart from that: Do you really have applications that need this huge amount of RAM? Note the benefit is not that much since this is a rather low-powered computer.

With two modules installed, Dual Channel mode is always enabled. If the modules are of different size, this is only valid for a fraction of the total memory installed. Example: 2GB + 1GB = 2x1 GB in Dual Channel + 1 GB in Single Channel mode.

For 4 GB installed, one module will run in Single Channel (which is slightly slower), but it will save some energy (~1-2 W) compared to 2x2GB in Dual Channel mode.

I'm thinking of purchasing one of these notebooks. I'm deciding between the 1410 SU2300 celeron (~$300) and the 1810 SU4100 (~$400). Seems like for similar specs, the 1810 is about $100 more, or 1/3rd the total price. The SU2300, although celeron is still dual core, and seems to benchmark pretty well. I already have a larger powerful i5 notebook, and would like this to take with me on the go. Mostly web surfing, watching tv/movies and word processing. I usually have plenty of windows / tabs open, so take that into account. Is there any compelling reason to get the 1810 over the 1410? Does the 1810 get better battery life, and if so, by how much? Is one lighter than the other? Are the other components pretty much the same (thinking of attempting hackintosh)?

Also, if anyone is looking to get rid of theirs or knows of a deal, I'm in the market.

    Thanks, Mike

The AS1410 with SU2300 is a dual-core, but it comes with battery rated at 6 hours. The 1810 comes with a larger battery (8hr), more RAM and a larger hard drive. Both units are full Intel and Linux friendly so they should work for you.

    I might sell my 1410.

ended up pulling the trigger on a 1410 w/the dual core celeron, 2gb memory and 160gb hard drive for $280 from ebay. Have a better 2.5" hard drive to install, and might upgrade the ram dependent on how slow it seems. The 1810 was clearly nicer, but the price differential wasn't worth it for my needs. Can't wait to get it!

Question, If I ever replace the battery, does the higher capacity 1810 battery fit the 1410 model or are they different sizes or connections?

LONG TIME NOW POST! mkkkay... enough w/ those silly caps.

I haven't begun to navi through this extensive thread since my absence, but thought to check acer's site today to see if any new drivers or bios had been posted since last check. not expecting much, i saw there appears to be a BIOS update in Sept. that remedies the long touted battery loss while off... is it so?! and if so, it is fixed?

if so, that's hot... def. gonna try to find a good deal this BF for a 80+GB SSD for my little, sometimes neglected acer 1410.

thank you sir! that's good news. now just the ram whine and fan metal on hsf rattle... not too shabby!

gonna pop in a SSD in this bad boy and get a 1810 battery soon.

anyone know what the default mAh battery capacity is for the 1410 and for the 1810? 2nd what's the maximum found which doesn't protrude out from the battery compartment? eBay links work well. I know how to search eBay, just looking from the expertise and user experience from anyone here that has tried a great, cheap 1810 battery in the 1410. Wanna increase the 4hr battery life.

I've been trying to figure this out but no clue for the life of me why this is happening. I have a matched pair of 2x2GB Kingston DDR2-667 in my Aspire 1410 and Task Manager says I only have 3GB of ram yet Vista properties shows 4.00 GB (Right click computer->properties). Is this the effect of the 4500MHD GPU? How can I find out what's making the GPU use up that much RAM? I have the DWM service turned off, only things I'm ever running is a few different browsers simultaneously (Opera 10, IE8, Chrome 7, FireFox 3, Safari 5). Usually 2 or 3 browsers at a time with a couple dozen tabs per browser. Anyway, help or ideas appreciated, also I do not have a RAM cap set in the "System Configuration" utility either.

    1410 = 11.1v 4400mAh/48Wh
    1810 = 11.1v 5600mAh/63Wh or 10.8v 5800mAh/63Wh

I want to thank this forum and its users that help the staff here in these machines. Fantastic!

Here are a few more questions for the expert computers:

Does anyone know if the 1810TZ can use this memory?
    Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory Model KHX6400S2ULK2/4G

It's got a tight CAS latency of 4. The Bios allows this type of memory?

Speaking of BIOS, it asks for someone inexperienced. How to update the BIOS safely?

    Thanks in advance.

my issues with buying that Core i5 laptop, no USB 3.0 and no HDMI/DVI... why pay more for an i5 and lack those features, you could probably get them on an SU7300 or SU9400 unit for less right?

EDIT: My mistake, the specs mention HDMI port, though it's still only USB 2.0 but at least it has the HDMI. Well I'm not certain if it does but the specs for the line says it does. Hopefully this specific model includes it.

For the record, it has HDMI and we don't know what it will cost. The 1830 starts at $599 so I'm guessing this will be less. Maybe they will try to hit that $400 -$450 price point that made the 1410 so attractive????

But the I series processors seem to be more thirsty than what we have in the 1410/1810s.

yes but I was informed the I series can do almost twice the work at 40% the power consumption of the Core 2 series...Maybe the CULV Core 2 are exempt of this. Would be nice to see a CULV I series.

Can anyone help me with my RAM issue? I can't figure it out for the life of me.
EDIT: seems it's a software limitation of vista 32bit...

If you have a 32bit you need to enable PAE (Physical Address Extension) if you have it. I've never looked into it for Windows, but I use 32-bit PAE Linux Kernel and I see all of the 4GB RAM I have installed. I'm pretty sure Windows lets you use it too.

did you ever buy the gskill 800? there is only one guy so far that i found who keeps posting that you can't use 5-5-5-15 timing 800, and only one who's used the GEil brand and got it working, so i'm not sure if it's his machine, or the 1410 board that's finicky, or the ram mfr...

Seriously, the RAM timings don't matter at all on these computers. Use standard RAM from Kingston, Crucial, whatever and you're set.

No. See support.microsoft.com/kb/929605 "the maximum memory available in 32-bit versions of Windows Vista is typically 3.12 GB."

    nitpick mode = on
    The battery of my 1810TZ is 11.1V 5600mAh (63Wh - 62.16 to be precise).
    A 10.8V battery with 5600mAh should have only 60.5Wh.

    nitpick mode = off :D

You are correct. My 63Wh battery is actually a 5800mAh 10.8v unit that came out of my Gateway EC1458u (1810tz clone.) I should have looked closer. :)

I've had decent luck with the generic batteries from Hong Kong on eBay for my old Toshiba A105 and my girl's M115.

I have an as1410 su2300. I recently upgraded to dual channel 4gb 800mhz (50$ on ebay and sold my 2 sticks of 1g for 25$ on ebay), and so I've noticed now that the su2300 is the bottleneck. I'm not even sure that the su2300 can push 4gb of memory at once.

I read somewhere that a guy was able to overclock the su2300 by 5% via a modified bios. Even though it's only 5%, that would probably be a direct performance improvement since it is the bottleneck. Does anyone know about this?

    Thanks!
