640 x 480 in high quality is a bit choppy. In medium quality it's better (video).
As you can see in the video I have little experience with playing games.

Please do a benchmark also. Would be interesting to see some fps results -
The 1810t is available in Europe for 499 but in the US the equivalent 1410 can be pre-ordered for 449$, so, such direct currency conversion cannot be applied.
Regarding the 1410, in the US it has the SU3500 CPU, but it's still listed with 6 hours battery autonomy in the acer website, so most likely it will not have the same 5600 mAh battery of the European 1810T. -
-
The model I was refering to is the unreleased "TZ" or 1810TZ model with DualCore- not the 1810T that's similiar to the as1410 with single core. I've already put my order in for the 1410. -
-
-
Okay, so I saw something interesting in the "News" thread about the 1410 being released for sale in the US - it's apparently not part of the Timeline series. Does this just mean it has a slightly smaller battery and won't get a dual-core version (not a big problem either way, since its cheaper), or is there an actually significant difference as far as chassis and design goes when compared to the 1810T? They looked identical to me, so I dunno...
-
DUDE!!! you're on Engadget!!
check it out!! haha

haha congrats Phil

Okay, my preorder is into JR for a Diamond Black AS1410T. $449.99 to my door. I can't wait.
-
-
how do I check if it has free PCI-E ports, I guess by just opening up the bottom parts?
Guessing by the specs I think the 1410 may have an 4400 mAh battery vs. the 5600 mAh of the 1810T. -
So it seems that 1810t has finally arrived at shops in Germany
The best offer so far is 499€ shipping included at computeruniverse.net.
Shipping time 2-3 days
http://www2.computeruniverse.net/ur...roducts/90339153.asp&agent=185&urlmapped=true -
I think 499€ that is the official price that we are going to see in EU widespread ...
... for de 2Gb + 250Gb HD ... that´s I show in the specs from beggining.
I am surprosid with the 160Gb HD version of Phil ...
Just a quick question .... as I am not very familiar "twicking" mobiles ... If we want to to install a quick SSD instead of the orignal HD, this one has to be removed and replaced by the SSD (Am I correct??). And about expansions, if this machine has an empty slot for the 3G Module option ... it means that it has a mini E-PCI slot ( o whatever) available ... I have seen some places where they shell accelerator graphics cards to be installed there ... it will be any choice to install this "gadgets" in this machine .... it wuold result a BOOSTED netbook !!
Cheers -

@juan55
The question is if the second slot is populated. On some none 3G models Acer decided to leave the connector pads blank.
A card that most likely would work is the Broadcom HD accelerator. There are no graphics cards out there I heard of that would speed up normal graphics.
There is an interesting project ongoing, the DIY Vidock(see sig). A modded 1810t with external docking station containing a high speed desktop graphics card would be purely awesome. 8h battery life on the go and Crysis at home
The HDDwould have to be replaced with the SSD.
@picture
Damn! So they left it blankI'm not willing to shell out another 100€ for 3G I wouldn't use anyway. So modding is the only way here to get the port functional.

If I enable DXVA, CPU load goes down and image quality too.
Doom 3 benchmark Timedemo 1
High: 11.6 fps
Medium: 12.5 fps -
On a Bulgarian site I found a benchmark of 3810t with su9400 and they got 14.5fps on low details with config tweaks. Sounds about equally, actually. -
Hey Phil,
I was wondering if it was possible to reduce the cpu occupation by using this pack of codecs from http://www.digitalia.be/software/media-filters-pack
Apparently 1080p video playback works really nice on 3810T with an SU3500. The author of this pack is using MPC HC with all the correct settings for HD use (first u have uninstall yours)...
The only issue is that we can't use anymore subtitles because it disable hardware acceleration.
Again thanks for the review!!! -
mario_superstar, It is possible to reduce the CPU load to 40-50% by enabling DXVA, but it hurts image quality.
I don't know if you read this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=408933
If you still want me to test the Media Filters Pack let me know. -
I see on your blog that you approve with a little reservation (flash, cpu intensive).
Would you be comfortable having the 1810t, tz as your only computer? Or do you still see the need for a secondary laptop/desktop? -
I would be quite happy with the 1810T, because I hardly watch HD Flash anyway. Other than that the system is more than fast enough. Yesterday I was unzipping and the system stayed responsive for other tasks.
But I'd rather have the 1810Tz, just a little more headroom, and knowing that I can play Full HD flash, even though I hardly do.
I would be disapppointed if the Tz is louder though. I like how quiet the T is. -
Well I read the thread...really interesting...
Damn, now I am a little bit disapointed about DXVA capabilities...
The author of "www.digitilia.be" didn't notice this kind problem...(unless I did'nt read all the tread about 3810T...)
Yes I think it will be interesting to use this pack as the author said he tweaks it especially for HD capabilities... If you can, it could be really nice to know the results...
Thanks again for your feed back!! -
With other movies I did not notice the quality loss of DXVA. But the Bourne Supremacy makes it very clear. It looks poor with DXVA.
I will try the codec pack. -
mario_superstar, with those codecs I get lower CPU utilization and many dropped frames.
Best looking results are still with MPC HC, Cyberlink codec and DXVA disabled. -
@Phil
I have a request, could you please
1.open SetFSB
2.select the appropriate PLL
3.click "Get FSB"
4.click "Diagnosis"
5.click "capture"
That procedure will place a screenshot of the current settings in the subfolder called "capture" in the SetFSB directory.
And could you please upload that screenshot?
It would allow me to study the pll settings and think about possibilities of overclocking. -
Also, I want a laptop to last 3 years. Caught between ordering one of these (and saving a little money and gaining portability) or a E6400 or Samsung Q320 knowing that the E6400 and the Q320 would likely last longer. -
I just arranged a digital scale, turns out it's a bit heavier than expected.
About 1.43 kg. -
That's not far off, in the US, the 1410T is listed at 3.08lbs (1.40kg).
Also - crap, forgot about Bing's double cashback thing, so I'm canceling and repreordering to get the extra $45. -
The American 1410 is probably lighter with the smaller battery.
There was a Chinese site that posted the 1810T was 1.30kg but that was inaccurate.
I'm trying to make the vids a bit better, here's one about build quality.

Ok Phil,
At least we try differents packs and settings... thanks again.
For me 1080p playback is not a big issue, most of the videos I look are in 720p. HD youtube is another issue but we couldn't expect miracle in this area till Adobe makes any improvement on flash.
I am not even sure the 1810 TZ wil provide enough power to handle it...Futhermore the SU4100 will certainly be around 10W, so less battery life...
Speaking of battery life...in your the first part of the rewiew you record 9h14 min of juice. In normal use like web browsing, divx playplack (not HD), what can we expect? -
Canceled and reordered with Bing cashback, so I will be saving that $45. I opened my Live shopping account for the first time in a while and found $21 cashback from eBay's 25% off sale last November, yay!
Phil, great work on your review (and making engadget, pretty sweet). Question - can we get more pictures of the notebook itself? -

Online Technical Support -
Phil, that reminds me of one other thing. Could you please provide the model number of your battery so I can see if I can pick up a 5600 mAh battery online. Thanks and great review btw.
-
The battery is UM09E36 but there are other numbers on it as well. See attached picture.Attached Files:

If you take a look at Phil's review, on the bottom there's a link to the pic section. Once there, if you go to page 2, there's a close up of the battery. -
-
Well... I pulled the plug on my J&R pre-order. I want to see if the US gets the dual core model before buying one.
-
-
EDIT: Thanks though, for moving me up a slot in the preorder queue. -
I'll definitely get the su3500 version, too. I'd rather have a higher peak performance in single threaded applications(older games) with the prospect of overclocking to 1.6GHz or more than waiting for the su4100 version with unknown performance and power consumption. It's cheaper after all and the saved money will be spend on my next toy
-
I'm pretty sure the SU3500 will get better battery life, inspite of the people who claim it won't. Have a look at this SU3500 laptop for example. -
-
Ewwww Packard Bell. Acer owns them now, right?
-
Right. But the review is pretty good. A very solid device.
-
-
Well I get that the price for the 1410 is GREAT but I don't like the battery life. I am fine with the SU3500 and can live without blue tooth but the smaller battery is annoying. It looks like the larger batteries are about $100 so I will likely wait for the 1810T or TZ. In the meantime my 1000HE is doing just fine.
