So easy to install from USB for win7.

HPUSBFW formatter. Just google it. It's free. Format flash drive and copy contents from DVD. done.

I think it's been proven Balanced and High Performance perform the same.

It makes sense because during benchmarks the CPU doesn't go up to 1.6GHz in balanced.

Yes! The grease on the CPU/GPU made enough difference that the fan now turns off. Before it would stick to low speed mode. The ejected air and base of the machine now feel warmer (a good thing).

    That sounds great.

If i am remembering correct, the the fan didn't turn off on all tested 1810t/1410 and maybe your mod could be a solution to this problem.

I am really looking forward to your experience with the improved 1810t :D

Has anyone tried using 120 dpi. I experimented with a 751 today, and the text seemed rather small. And no one at Costco could get a password to get into the control panel to change it.

    Thanks

I tried out the AS1410 and Gateway EC1803h today at Staples/Futureshop respectively. I didn't notice any hissing or static when using the audio jack on either model (I used Creative Labs EP-630 noise-isolating earphones).

I'm glad I cancelled my AS1410 order from J&R in the states. After trying both products out in-store, the Gateway's build-quality seems superior. The AS1410 keyboard has a crazy amount of flex and the hinges look weaker. I will have to remap the Canadian keyboard, but it's essentially the same price and I got an extra 1GB of RAM and peace of mind as the warranty is actually valid in my country of residence.

Thanks for everyones help about installing software using a USB key. Didn't really want to spend money on a drive. Does this also work for installing other software that is on DVD such as office and my antivirus? Thanks

I didn't notice too much difference between the 2. My keyboard doesn't have a crazy amount of flex. I believe the gateway hinges are just chrome painted. The amount of ram is the same. 3GB. Blew away Vista and now running Win7 Ultimate. I'm not sure if I like the keyboard layout spacing though. Time will tell. 13 days to return :D

Jusy got mine about 1 hour ago.The fan occasionally makes a slight grinding noise but if I move it around ocassionlly the grinding noise will stop.
It will not connect to my Linksys N router unless I turn the router to send a mixed signal.I checked the settings on the laptop wireless connecter. The 802.11N mode is on but when but when I check the wireless mode option under Value there is no N option.Updating the driver I get a message that the best driver is already installed...

I need to order a netbook in the USA by the end of the weekend so it gets to me by the end of the week. is this 1410 worth spending the extra 50-100 say over the Asus1005HA or asus 100HE or toshiba 205. amazon has the 1410 for 449.

without reading 112 pages do any of you actually have the 1410 and how do you like it? ( I don't care if you have the european version 1810 version as that is NOT what I am considering ) please only opinions on the 1410 version available in the US

I don't own a 1410/1810 (though that may change soon. ;) ) but I would highly recommending paying the extra $50-100 for this model.

You get a faster processor, better graphics, larger display and resolution, more ram, larger hard drive, HDMI out, great battery life, etc. This is a very good value compared to the netbooks out there, I would safely call this a netbook killer.

Would someone who has already taken apart the 1410 take a shot of the internal screen hinges? After the fail that is this 11z, the Acer looks promising.

I've been using my 1410 for a few hours and am mostly pleased, but find the touchpad peculiar. Sometimes the cursor shows crosshairs instead of the pointer or it tries to return to the spot where I dragged it from. Anyone else find their touchpad too touchy? When I plug in a mouse it works just fine.

The wireless has good range and lets me connect in a location where my other laptop is hopeless and the battery acts like it will run the 1410 forever.

And its totally quiet. No fan noise here.

I recommend you read through at least the last 20 pages (for when people actually received their units).

After 3 days of using mine I'm still disappointed. It's a great machine on paper and I really really want to like it... but the screen quality is the fundamental limiting factor. Mine has a vertical red/green color shift that makes the viewing angle about 4 degrees before things either turn light pink or light green.

The other issue is electrical noises in the headphones. If you have decent headphones you'll probably begin to notice it. Once you notice it you tend to focus on it... like a dead pixel.

If you must buy it... get it locally or somewhere that has a nice return policy.

Oh, sorry. I thought you meant when did it show up on my cashback account. Don't do it through search, go to bing.com/shopping, click on cashback stores, find the link for JR and go through it, search for the Acer and then purchase it.

ETA: I wonder if you got a defect Lepton? I have neither of those problems.

Absolutely get this over the Asus' you mentioned. I've tried quite a few netbooks, trying to get one that can play those d@mn Flash games my son loves - Dell minis, Asus 1000HE, Acer. All of these play those d@mn Flash games in slo-mo.

Just got the Acer 1410 today. The difference is day and night on those d@mn Flash games, and I'm just messing with the factory installed OS right now. Will be installing Win7 Pro RTM shortly.

Just installed another 2GB module and popped in a 500GB 7.2k RPM drive. It's gonna run Win7 beautifully.

At $361 (after J&R discount and Bing cashback) this is a bargain. Even at full price $450, it is well worth the little bit of extra - 1366x768 resolution (1024x576/600 is not very usable), much better video, 64bit OS, 4GB RAM, the excellent Synaptics touchpad, Intel 5100 wireless N, removable flush-fitting battery, HDMI output.

Agreed. However the keyboard is iffy for me. Feels odd. It's most likely due to the canadian billingual keyboard. Already have win7 rtm ultimate installed with 3gb ram. Next i'll be swapping in the 128gb ssd from my 1000he and maybe order the 5600mah battery from that website I posted earlier.

Can you recommend a 2gb memory for the 1410?

Also, can I install a beta of Windows 7 now and then upgrade when it is released? I would rather not install all my software now and then have to do a clean install of 7 in a few weeks.

Thanks - I have a black 1410 on the way from JR!

Sorry, you cannot upgrade from a beta version of 7 to the retail copy, you'd have to do a clean install.
Now what I am confused about is whether the clean install wipes out everything from the hard drive (like older operating system clean installed did) but I believe there's an option to backup your files to a "Windows.OLD" folder and you may have to reinstall your programs but everything was intact.

I wanted to thank all of the owners for posting information about the product here. The lack of available information, photos, videos, etc. on various tech/review sites is very disappointing. Either the tech sites are not putting in the proper work or Acer is rushing products out without proper marketing. I'm voting for the latter (and it seems Acer is not the only company).

I currently own an Acer AOD150. I ordered it the day it came out and it shipped with a 5800mah battery. While I love the damn thing for lugging around at school, I must say the small screen size is annoying for powerpoint, videos, and generic website browsing. That is how this laptop caught my eye.

Would I be correct in assuming the AOD150 and Acer 1410 have the same cheapish plastic build?

What has realistic battery life been like for all of you, and has anyone tested it under heavy use? For example, hypothetically speaking, let's say I had a tendency to watch college football on my laptop during class on ESPN360. Am I looking at a dead laptop in 2-3 hours?

I have read through this entire thread and only recall one or two mentions of HDMI. Has anyone else tested HDMI out to their TV? What were the results?

I have also seen mixed comments about YouTube HD and Hulu HD/Full Screen. Could anyone else weigh in? Anyone tried ESPN 360 HD?

Sorry for all of the questions, but hopefully they can help more people than just me.

95% runs fine. It just so happened that I tested the most heavy video in my review.

Acer 1410 build quality is more similar to 751. Maybe my video helps:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7o0su-06fM

People might get the impression that every 1410 has this issue. This is not true. Several people have reported head phone sound is perfectly fine.

You might want to try changing the sensitity.

Thanks to everyone who has responded with info in this thread. I ordered one of the last few black AS1410 netbooks from Amazon today and I've spent the last hour or so collecting drivers for it to update when it arrives.

Here's a little driver faq I've written up for anyone else who wants to keep their software up to date:

Intel GS45 Express - Video, Chipset, Sata, Wireless
    http://www.intel.com/Products/Notebook/Chipsets/GS45/GS45-overview.htm
Click "Tools & Software" -> "Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Drivers" to get to the Video drivers.

Get the chipset and sata drivers from the links here
    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-029319.htm

    Get Intel 5100 wireless drivers:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/
On left side hover "Wireless Networking" -> "Intel WiFi Products" -> "Intel® WiFi Link 5300 and Intel® WiFi Link 5100 products" -> Download the software application version, it should include the newest driver as well

    -----------------

    Atheros - Lan
    http://partner.atheros.com/Drivers.aspx

Grab the drivers from the "Atheros AR81Family Windows Driver x86/x64(Win7,Vista, XP, Server 2003)" category. I'm not sure which one to grab though, "AR8131_AR8132" or "AR81FamilyWinSetup" I'm guessing either would work.

    -----------------

    Realtek - Audio
    (HD Audio)
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/
Click - "Downloads" -> "High Definition Audio Codecs (Software)" -> "Vista, Windows7 Driver (32/64 bits) Driver only (ZIP file)"

    -----------------

The Alcor website seems inaccessible at the moment so I can't get updated card reader drivers and I don't know which camera and touchpad is in this so those will have to wait as well.

I have a request, could someone please post the part number of the installed RAM module? It would be good to know, because someone who wants to work with a dual channel configuration could buy a second RAM module of the same type.
Cusem wrote on the Aspire One board that he had problems with some modules he bought, so there are compatibility issues to avoid.

You can rip CDs/DVDs with an ISO software, copy the ISOs over to your 1410/1810t and mount them in a virtual disk drive. It's much more convenient if you ask me, because the virtual drive has full speed and doesn't make that turbine sound an ordinary drive makes and it doesn't suck your battery dry.

    @dasfool

By using a mounted ISO you are looking at extended install times as your harddrive works a lot more (seek times).
The USB install method is best in terms of speed.

I'll check the ram part number in a minute. But have to switch it off first :D

Cool! Please post the number on the chips, too. I've checked the number on Phil's RAM module that can be seen on one of his pics, but it doesn't return a result. The sticker is put onto another sticker where the manufacturers part number might be printed on, so that might be the problem.

With MPC-HC with Cyberlink codec selected.

    Here's explained how: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=399952

Best image quality is achieved by disabling DXVA.

That's what I expect. It's not official though.

how did you get it for so cheap. j&r sells for 450. cashback is 5-7%. that is still around 420.

how is the glossy screen and font. I am a bit concerned about font being so small. my 17 inch labtop is 1440x900 at default dpi and I would not like font any smaller. on my 22 inch monitor i do raise dpi to 120. Do you like the keyboard?

i will use vista until i get the free upgrade. also i don't use the touchpad at all, only use a wireless mouse.

any chance you tried any photo software - gimp, photoshop or photoshop elements on it yet?

i do like the idea of faster cpu/gpu and 2 ram already installed. I am not tech savvy at all.

that is wield indeed, i think it might be a faulty memory. the memory shouldnt matter all the much as long at its a 5300 and 667. i'll be sure to test it out when it gets here and reply back, but i dont forsee any problems.

i got my 1410 for a total of 372 with 14% bing -15$ talking to the rep. so all and all i think its a pretty good deal, the 4gb mem which i bought a while back was only 20$. asumpeing that it will work with the 1410 i got myself a 1410 with 4gb for 392$. im a little sad that it doesnt have bluetooth and an express slot like the s12 will. i might use it till some newer one comes out and sell it. also it seems a little thick from the pictures. i'll get it on monday

That is what one would think at first, but sometimes it just doesn't work. On the Aspire One board we had lists of working and none working modules, too.

    @juan55
Nice to see them in stock in real stores, too. I prefer buying online though, because of "Fernabsatzgesetz" in Germany. You can test the device for two weeks and return it without reason and get your money back :)

You can see the store telephone number in the MAP section.

    PLENILUNIO 91 39 39 900
    CARABANCHEL 91 452 1500

    etc... ;)

    Hi guys,

thanks for the previous answers, regarding the durability of these machines. :)

Eventually I bought a used business class notebook instead, because I found a pretty good opportunity:

    HP 2510p
    - 12.1" LED backlight screen, 1280x800
    - Core 2 Duo U7700 ULV (1.33 GHz)
    - Intel GMA X3100 VGA (it's slower than the 4500MHD, but I don't mind)
    - 2 GB RAM
    - 8x Super Multi DVD-writer
    - HP HS2300 HSDPA modem
    - 120 GB 1.8" HDD
    - 6-cell battery (~3-7 hours, depending on the use)
    - Vista Business licence
    for ~630 USD

The 1.8" HDD is quite a pain, but before buying I found out that I will be able to buy a 2.5" SATA Multibay HDD-case, as a replacement for the internal optical drive.
