By the why at which store did you call? -
I think I am going now !! I am going to be outside Spain by 15 days and for my get back day by September 15th I am going to be without Portable .... so ... I think I am done ... I hope all the specs are correct ... because the 499 is normally quoted for the 2 Gb RAM memory unit, not for the 3 Gb RAM bassed memory !
I let you know the finall of this story ...

It would be really interesting to see a benchmark comparison between single channel and dual channel configuration regarding graphics performance.
We had the theory that 4500MHD would benefit from dual channel because it uses system RAM as video memory. GMA X3100 showed a much better performance with dual channel RAM and 4500MHD is the same technology.
It would be really nice if you or someone else could perform a Windows Experience Index benchmark(or any other graphics benchmark) with one memory slot empty and a benchmark with both slots populated -

My 1810T had a AUO205C display. AUO has now released a second 11.6" 1366*768 display: B116XW02V0. The latter seems to have slightly better contrast ( measurements). I'm not sure if the B116XW02V0 is used in the 1410/1810 by Acer.
If you want to find out what display you have you can do so with Everest. -
It´s on my hands now ... configuring pre-installed Vista ...
Plenilunio has received 20 units yesterday at noon, only blac and blue .... mine is blue BTW. 6 Units were sold yesterday and 5 units during this morning ... I believe this weekend it will be out of stock !!
Some feedback from the manager of the informatic section .... the models bassed in the SU4100 it will be not released until mid- October at least (if they are available) ... this model comes with the spanish keyboard layout, as I should expect ...
... and something else about the 3G module optiion: here in Spain only Asus has got homologation for the 3G module for its model 1000 H ... Acer still has not got it for any of their models ... 3810 etc ... ... bla .. bla .. so they stimate that it will not available for a while o may never as this is running very fast.
The unit comes with McAffe in spanish too ...
PS: Wireless conection at my home network fine ... in this moment McAffee is downloading to be up to day ...
Cheers -
Juan, if you want to speed up your system replace McAfee with Avira. Better yet no AV at all but not everyone likes that.
-
Congratulations, juan55
'Affe' means monkey in German.
So does that mean that the salesman confirmed 1810tz' existence or does it mean if they exist they won't be out before mid October? -
How's the config? As described? You said something about 3GB RAM...? -
I got in on the cashback when it was 14%. MS changes the percentages at will, you gotta jump when it's good enough for you. So that's $63 in cashback. I called J&R on Wednesday to ask about canceling the order since many other online merchants already got it in stock. I was offered $26 off to keep it. That's how I reach $361.
I like the screen. It's very sharp being a smallish 11.6" with highish 1366x768 resolution. I'm one of those who actually like the glossy screens for better color and contrast. Yes viewing angle and color and contrast are not that great, but for the price/performance/size, I'll take the compromise.
If 17" at 1440x900 is about your limit, the text on this Acer will probably be too small for you at the default DPI setting.
I just loaded Win7 Ultimate x64 RTM on it. It runs VERY well.
As for the touchpad, I don't like the hassle of an external mouse. I actually prefer a touchpad if it's a good one - I'm a very fast touch typist, I don't like taking my hand off the keyboard too far. This Synaptics is the best there is on the PC - the next best thing after the enormous pad on the Macbook Pro.
The only very minor issue I have with the keyboard is the spacebar is a bit long - I have to stretch my left thumb more than usual to reach the left ALT key on the keyboard.
As for graphics software, I only really use ACDsee to view/manage my photo library. It is very responsive in viewing photos stored on my server.
BTW the Intel 5100 N card is very fast, just as fast as the 5300 I had on a Dell Latitude. I'm copying files at ~14MB/s.

Sorry to be a pest (I've already asked this... I'm afraid it got buried in the 1000+ posts), but could someone comment on the webcam quality? It's the only thing keeping me from buying a 1410, and I need to order it by Monday. The Acer specsheet is very unhelpful -- no resolution listed or anything! Thanks in advance.

The exact model is: Acer 1810T - 353G25n -->> Part Number LX.SA 10X.034 --->> Model ZH7
I think the last 3 digits after the SA 10X is the country code (Spain is 034)
The s/N start with LXSA10X034 .....
BTW, they also tell me that Acer has used a "common chassis" ... that is the reason because the 1810T chassis reveals Blue Tooth conection but really it is not implemented (or that´s what I have understood).

Have any of you been exploring the multitouch options in the Synaptics touchpad? After some frustration with weird cursor behaviors I turned off most of these features and my cursor stopped freaking out.
The problem for me was that with such a small pad, I would often accidentally touch the pad with another finger and this would actiivate a zoom or other unwanted action, especially while I was holding down the smalld left mouse button.
Now that I know I don't have a defective touchpad I might even begin to explore what features I can make use of! -
I've used a borrowed 751 for a few weeks and am thinking about buying a 1410 instead of my own 751.
Do the touchpad buttons click from the edge or the top? Sounds silly, but I like to use the laptop in bed before I go to sleep (usually movies, but sometimes web surfing), and to see such a small screen I have to prop it up in such a way that its resting on its edge. Edge mounted touch pad buttons could be a problem. They'd be pressed almost constantly. Not good.
Second, what about real battery life... Not this fake stuff quoted on the web where somebody just turns it on and doesn't actually touch the machine. Or just turns on wifi and looks at the power meter. Some real usage.
For example, watching a DVD ISO image or video file as compared to doing something like CPU burn?
With the 751, I could do about anything I wanted and the battery life hardly changed. Sure, it was slow, but I could get a good 6 hours of full cpu usage out of it.
How about this video... (The video is a BBC video "Secret Life of Machines", from SecretLifeOfMachines.com . Watch whatever you want, I just suggested this for consistancy.)
http://qt.exploratorium.edu/ronh/SLOM/SLOM_0205-The_Video_Recorder.m4v
Full charge before watching, and how much left after watching, compared to CPU burn (or similar) after the same amount of time
(Unless, of course, you just want to put the video in a loop playback and see how long it really lasts.)
The great thing about the 751 was that although it was slow, the battery life didn't change too much regardless what I did on it.
Third, how did they manage to get the battery to not stick out, like on the 751? I know the 1410 has a smaller battery than the 1810, so that's some of it, but what else did they do? Did they shrink the keyboard or something?
I read somewhere they moved the keyboard much further forward than on the 751. Is that true? -

Some extra info about the 1810T and its performance ... I am actually typping this from my house dinningroom with the 1810T ... I have a Belkin Wi-Fi router in the last room of the house ... with my company Dell D620 the Wi-Fi signal strengh was just 1 bar and I usually had some conections problems ... with the 1810T now I have 3-4 signals bars from the same position in the chase long ... so I think I must assume it has a better Wi-Fi amplifier/electronics.
Did anybody note it or it is just that my Dell has a poor performance in the Wi-Fi signal processing?.
Cheers -
I've had a couple of laptops with Intel 5100 here, it's an excellent card.
-
Thank´s for the feedback, Phil -
This bug happens to both my Acers, just wondering if anybody else has it:
When I close my lid, sometimes it crashes the laptop instead of going to sleep, so the next time I start it up, it goes to boot up screen. The way around it for me is to disable automatic sleep when I close the lid. Instead, I have to manually click Fn+F4 to enter sleep. -
Go back a few pages to find pictures of this thing.
I seem to be able to get 6 hours when surfing the web, but I have Flashblock on so CPU is idle most of the time. No idea about battery life when playing movies. -
-
Since there is now an increasing number of 1410/1810t Owners:
How is the fan behavior of your laptop ? Is it constantly running at low speed or does it turn off under low usage ?
Tobi
p.s. this relates to the bad contact between the gpu and the heatsink in lepton's 1810t and a better behavior of the fan after some modification. -
Thanks! -
It looks like they could be clicked from the edge, like with your thumb. Sounds great for actually using the computer, but not so great when you try to prop up the loptop, like I'd do at night or just laying on the couch watching a movie.
That's pretty good compared to my old 15" laptop, of coursebut nothing special for a modern netbook / ultra-thin / catch-phrase-of-the-week notebook.
I'm suspecting that the 1410 / 1810's battery life will drop quite a bit when actually doing something with the cpu at full power and causing the fan to run.
Hopefully I'm wrong though. -
I have no problem changing DPI . my main issue is can the DPI be changed? this is not in any stores and I just need to know if this is possible. I need to make a decision about what to buy by tomorrow.
while I would like to take advantage of the bing discount, I can't have a 2 weeks shipping period. I have always received items from amazon in a few days with their free shipping. -

I am wanting to install Windows 7 professional. Has anyone run into any problems with hardware not working properly? Will I need to go searching for drivers? I did not notice any Windows 7 drivers on Acer's website. Is it best to do a clean install or an upgrade?
What will happen to the recovery partition after i install windows 7? Will it be deleted? Stay as Windows Vista?
Has anyone noticed a decrease in battery life with Windows 7?
Thanks -
I was curious why there is such a significant difference between my 1410 and D250 machines... I absolutely love my D250 and use it every day. The D250 fan doesn't comes on during low activity, audio quality is fantastic (better than any onboard audio chip I've used before, maybe due to low power electronics and short electrical path), and the screen is reasonably good without any vertical color shift problems. I ordered the 1410 and expected the same quality... but it has issues with all of the above.
So I took the D250 apart this morning to see what was different... and it was immediately obvious! The D250 is made by Compal and the 1410 by Quanta... they really are two different laptops. The PCBs, ribbons, hard disk bay, snaps/fasteners everything are much better in the D250. It is apparent how Acer can offer such a better "value" for only $150 more.
After researching what is on the horizon I think Ill buy another machine before the end of the year. It will be Intel's soon to be released Pineview architecture (combines next generation Atom with the GPU) and Broadcom BCM70015. It will easily blow away all netbooks and ultra-portables available today. For example:
Acer 1410:
Intel U3500 celeron (45 nm process, previous generation architecture, external memory controller)
Intel 4500MHD (65 nm process, power thirsty)
Gets pretty hot when using Excel and Matlab with a 4 hour battery life.
Next generation architecture:
Intel Pineview (32 nm process, integrated GPU and memory controller)
External low power HD decoders (Broadcom/Ion)
Double life for same amp-hour battery
Nokia is already marketing a 12-hour netbook with this
Hopefully October-December release
So I'm gonna sell my 1410 as soon as the next generation comes out... if that isnt obvious. To those of you on the fence. I recommend you wait. -
DOes the 1410 allow you to change resolution. if so what are the options it make it smaller so that the fonts are bigger. I don't care if it isn't HD, as long as it is readable. the default resolution sounds like it will be miniscule, my eyes are not good.
-
I recommend a clean install always... not worth the issues if something goes wrong.
You don't need the recovery partition if you made a recovery disk for Vista... that disk will put the partition back. So just delete everything and start fresh.
I didn't test Vista very long... but under Windows 7 the battery life is 6 or 7 hours with low usage and about 30% brightness. -
It would have been rather foolish of them to introduce a supposed netbook that couldn't get at least 6 hours, when their competitors were doing 8, 10, 11, etc. claimed hours of usage. That'd be like them introducing a new 7" netbook now that everybody has rejected that size screen.
But again, I don't consider web surfing to be a realistic example of battery life. It may be called a "NETbook", but that's not what people use them for anymore. -
-
I personally would buy a notebook with a bigger screen if I want to do media heavy stuff. -
-
anyone tried world of warcraft on this?
-
PS. And Pinetrail may be limited to 10" like N270 and N280 were. -
I am going to install windows 7 using a usb key. Will there be an option to delete the recovery partition when doing a fresh install of windows 7 or will I need to delete that first?
Thanks -
I've skimmed through all the 120 pages of this thread, so if I've missed this someone let me know;
Has anyone done a real world battery-life test of the 1410 yet? I mean, multi-tab browsing, office documents being edited, and music/video playback intermittently? Also, does anyone know for certain yet that the battery in the 1810t cannot be used in the 1410? -
All they say is "Flash Player with support for Broadcom's Crystal HD solutions is expected to be available in the first half of 2010." That could become 2011 too.
Let's hope for a better standard than flash by that time. -
What we really care about though is performance per watt-hour. And hands down Pineview will be significantly better. -
You can delete all partitions when installing Win7. -
For me 6-8 hours on one battery is more than enough. -

Hey Guys,
I am making the recovery disks right now with my 1410 and I was wondering, are the disks supposed to not "boot" ... What I mean is... isnt it supposed to autorun when I pop the disk in? Instead, it just shows the recovery disk files in windows explorer. The driver and applications disk I used booted up like normal I don't get it.
Thanks
