I like to keep things simple :) It's either a notebook or netbook for me. Too many marketing categories ...

Thanks for responding dermali, that noise is kinda driving me nuts because I like to hold my laptop and move it instead of sitting it on a flat surface... Im just wondering if other people have the same problem or if its an isolated issue, that would help my decision in getting an exchange/return from jr.

    Thanks

Got mine yesterday, only complaint is the lid picks up WAAAY too many fingerprints, may have to get a skin for it. Good job figuring out the touchpad, will have to grab that driver for it. Installed Win7 x86 off an SD card no problems. Burned the recovery discs via a virtual burner and dumped the ISO's onto my archive hdd. Great so far, though the fan does buzz a bit.

Does anyone know what the 3113 bios does?

I've had mine for several days now, and am very pleased. I like it much better than the 3810TZ which I owned for 1 day.

It runs cool, is quiet, light, and very snappy with Win 7 x86 RTM.

I do notice that the sides of my thumbs must be distracting the touchpad when I type sometimes, but I'm not sure how new Synaptics drivers will help that, as posted earlier. Also, the webcam on this model is not 720p as on the bigger Timeline series--it's 640x480 and very weirdly-lit at that. I've bought $15 webcams at WalMart with better video/audio.

I don't experience audio line noise, that's a good thing coming from a Dell 1520 which was plagued with incurable mic/headphone interference from Intel Speedstep[ping] on the CPU.

I miss the "End" key as well, to jump to the end of lines, URLs, etc.

Value for price? GREAT. Perfect for a student.

i just ordered a red 1410 from amazon, and was wondering what people are doing for cases?

I am interested in a sleeve style case, just for the laptop, not for any accessories. any recommendations?

    - also, can i just add in any 2gb stick of ram, or should i buy a matched pair from newegg?

Why is it that much better? The size and speed? I'm considering the 3810 or 1410 myself.

    Audio Problem

Hi everyone I have been lurking in this thread for a while but i found an issue and was hoping i could get some help with.

I'm on a 1410 / Vista and noticing lower than normal audio volume from a good Plantronics headset / mic i bought 1 months ago. It still works perfect on the previous laptop but when i go back to the 1410 i put all the settings to max and the volume and mic are really, really low. I would say its borderline unusable.. Anyone noticed this. Any suggestions?

JR.com is fine if you live in America but i'm never going to place an order with them again for an international purchase. Amazon is a lot easier and less hassle free.

I have made like 4 payments nearly totalling $2,000 for a $449 ultraportable. The first two times i was told that my card was not authorised although they got an authorisation code and actually had the funds on holds. I never realised this until i checked my bank later.

The third time i cancelled and decided to place my order through Amazon. I don't know if my 3rd order would have gone through. I kind of doubt it. Customer service at the credit services level could be improved also.

Anyway, i placed an order on the 1st through Amazon for the black diamond laptop and JR.com was the reseller. It is easier with Amazon dealing with the payment side of things. I am waiting for that item to ship.
I need it to arrive in the UK by the 20th. I will be getting it shipped onto a friend.

I cancelled the pre-ordered item because i was planning to buy it from a retailer that had them in stock. I got distracted also and was unsure if those that needed to contribute to this actually would lol.

I hope that my nephew likes this laptop when he gets it. There seems to be a few complaints, i think he should be fine with it. This cost £280 compared to over £400 in the UK.
Even the Dell 11z sells at Carphone warehouse for £399.

Oh, I'm still pissed at Amazon. It also kicked in the fraud protection for my card, and charged me twice. And then after that I had to call them to get it shipped, since for some reason it would not. I finally got a tracking number today, though.

sizewise.. i prefer the 1410.. but hey.. my 3810t has a core2duo AND an SSD...

still the price difference is enormous... 450 vs 800...
so for the price i'd take the 1410 anytime.. it just came out 3 weeks after i needed a new pc.

PS: i really like the quality of the 3810t over the 1410, you can really tell the difference

Download the utility SharpKeys and reverse PgUp/Home and PgDn/End leaving Home and End as the default and the PgUp/PgDn requiring depressing the function key. I use Home and End a lot more in normal editing.

To continue the theme of bashing the retailers, I'm pissed at J&R. Apparently, they've instructed UPS not to allow the package to be picked up from the UPS facility. Since I'm never home during the day on work days and UPS doesn't deliver on weekends, the only other option allowed (besides calling J&R) is to send it back. How stupid.

Wow it suddenly became busy here with new owners. Nice to see.

    Good news.

Can't find your HDTune shot, can you show me?

Hitachi 5K320 family should get 51MB/sec and is quite speedy. Unless background processes are dragging it down.

Hi, I got my 1810T a few days ago and wanted to know what’s the name of the slot next to the WLAN device on the mainboard? Is it an empty slot for a 3G Device? Is it possible to expand the 1810T with an 3G moduldevice?

    Thanks

Just started to hear fan rattle and it's REALLY annoying. It's a mechanical rattle not an increase in volume of the white noise made by fans. Even worse, if you're working on your lap the sound oscillates with movement. There's nothing I can do to silence it. I think it's temperature / speed related. F'ing annoying. This notebook has gone from grade A to a disappointing C-.

The fan rattle seems to be a problem for several in this thread. I just threw out all the packing and removed all stickers too :(

The 1810T with SU3500 already plays all 720p, except one clip on Youtube seems to cause trouble. Someone has said that this clip plays well under Windows 7, but I haven't seen this confirmed.

By the way I think 549 is a realistic price for the SU4100 with Vista. I'm guessing that will be the launch price in most of Europe.

Skandinavia is pretty expensive in general, so I expect 549eur to be the upper limit for 1810tz. In Austria it is in shops for preorder at 519eur.

i am the one who was concerned about font size of the 1410. as there are none of these in my area, I went to best buy to look at the gateway 3103 which is the same screen size and resolution. I was able to change the font size for desktop icons which helped but was unable to change the dpi at the store. it looked like it would be okay with that change. so i ordered the red one from J&R . as I needed it by next week i couldn't take a chance on the free shipping so I paid extra for the 2 day shipping. i still saved by going here over amazon as Amazon I would have had to pay tax. I put in the bing cash back which was 5-7% at item of purchase but i have no idea if it went thru. I hope it does as that would pay for the shipping fee. It did arrived today but I wasn't home and a neighbor has it so I will pick it up tomorrow.

I hope those of you have the 1410 are liking it. the reviews at amazon are quite good.

Notebookjournal has done fan measurements on three levels, you can compare them to all other notebooks.

thanks for confirming icefiresr. I'll try to see what the dutch shops say.

I wanted to confirm that installing the Synaptics x64 Vista driver on my Windows 7 x64 did indeed work to decrease palm sensitivity (PalmCheck is a feature and you can customize a sensitivity level). Some of the features in this program are indispensable, notably enhanced methods for click dragging, scrolling, and zone clicking.

Could you keep me updated Phil? I'm dutch too and I'm planning on buying the 1810t(z). So far I've only seen shops in scandinavia/spain/uk listing the SU4100 version. 1810T-413G32N and 1810T-413G25N.

One question: the 1810t does not have a dvd/cd drive right? How am I suppose to install windows 7? Should I buy an external drive?

Yeah I will, thanks for your reply :)

Oh thanks, only knew it was possible with linux.

You can install it from USB key (better 8GB minimum) or an SD card. If you don´t know how to do that, you can always borrow an extrernal drive from friends, or buy a cheap one from ebay.

In the specs on that page they call it a "Pentium" not a Core 2 Duo.

This makes 2 or 3 new models with these specs in the last couple of weeks. I think between now and Christmas there will be many more. They seem to be upgrading hardware in order to handle Windows 7 well and the 11.6" size fills an important gap. I'm resisting the urge to run out and by a 1410. I want to wait and see what is available in November.

Hey Phil, were there any case for that laptop? Or should I buy case 2? That su4100 probably runs more lower cpu usage when working so maybe I'll buy that one even that su3500 have faster ddr and more L2.

Thanks for the Synaptics link, I'll try their x86 drivers for "PalmCheck".

Battery life seems to be ~5.5 hr in Win7 "balanced" mode with no Acer ePower management software or whatever it's called.

Using Win7, the SU3500 can play the Lady Gaga HD vids on Youtube fine, full screen, and I didn't do that DXVA driver/tutorial thing either.

Screen is a fingerprint magnet and coming from 1024x768@17", I'm not used to the [email protected]" screen, it makes me dizzy, but the laptop is good.

For anyone looking for a case for their 1410/1810, just go to FleaBay and use the words "AO751H Case" (sans quotes) in the search function.

Half way down the results page, found a bag for 9.99 plus 5.99 shipping that has a number of pockets for mouse, power plugs etc. Exactly what I was looking for.

But there are a lot of offerings there.

FYI, the drivers from Synaptic are old but functional. I had to move the Properties -> Sensitivity -> PalmCheck one click to the right from default to do away with all skips :)

If you want more features, the drivers for Vista x64 below also work on Win 7 x64 enabling more gestures. Interestingly enough, 12.2.8 version had different features (pinch, ...) than the 13.2.6.1 version. It's trial and error on the feature set you want. I scanned with AVG Free and Antivir Free and both were negative (meaning no viruses). I do not trust these download every driver sites. I am not recommending them by any means. However, I did get more features. I went with the 13.2.6.1 version since I prefer two finger scroll and three finger actions.

    http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/15103-synaptics-driverver-v13-2-6-1/

Edit: 13.2.6.1 does have the features of older versions. They are organized differently. The other features showed up when I rebooted. DOH.

As for the fan noise. Everything is quiet again this morning now that the notebook has cooled. The fan rattling started after installing Visual Studio 2008, and other large programs. After reading lepton's messages in this thread and viewing his pictures I think it might be a manufacturing flaw and will probably be an issue for many more people as this notebook gains popularity.

I ordered this thing online. I have never returned anything after many, many years and loathe the thought of having to return this and dealing with the hassle of shipping, waiting for a replacement, etc. I advise buying this locally just in case you need to return it for one without rattle. It's an awesome notebook otherwise.

It would be so beyond dumb and confusing if they had a regular "Pentium SU4100" that wasn't a C2D, and a C2D SU4100. I'm sure they meant it was a C2D SU4100.

but yeah, that Samsung looks incredibly hot. Plus the super long battery life. Only thing I'm worried about is it seems to be slightly heavier than the Acer, and also the price I guess.

Mine will come in the ENG package, but with an additional SVK manual. The OS is english too, as the Win7 upgrade will be. I am pretty sure that they don´t ship outside my country, sorry for that.

The specs say 4-cell battery is standard. 9 hours on a 4 cell seems too good to be true. Samsung or not, it's basicaly the same hardware inside.
