You should put the stock RAM in the slot where it was when you purchased your device, leave the other slot empty and use the device till the problem comes up again or if it doesn't come up again the slot is faulty.

There's a bit of competition now from...Acer
For those interested in speedier smaller laptops/netbooks, here's the Acer Ferrari One netbook to debute at £399 with Win 7:
http://www.itproportal.com/portal/n...errari-one-amd-based-super-netbook-debut-399/
The only potential issue is the 'up to 5 hours' battery life. But certaintely looks like a good performer all round - a good competitor to the 1410/1810/TZ -
Tnx, juan55
@hanybanoub
Yes, it has better GPU and maybe slightly worse CPU than tz version. It is realy nice. And a price (£399=433€
is quite low too.
-
The Ferrari looks nice for gaming. Unfortunately it lacks an HDMI port. That's a deal breaker for me, but may not be for some.
-
Wow that surprises me. Maybe they had to sacrifice it for the XGP graphic port.
-
Yea, pretty weird decision on the Ferrari considering "the only XGP (external) graphics accelerator comes from Fujitsu and is based on two years old ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 graphics chip.... but it could be assumed that there will be new graphics boards shortly powered by ATI Radeon HD 4800-series graphics chips or even higher-end solutions"
Photos and more about the external graphics platform (XGP) here.
Looks interesting, but so far from mainstream. -
The trackpad on it is funky though. Its a V basically.

There is more competition from Acer themselves, the Gateway EC1803u and EC1805U. The EC1803u was previously a Canada exclusive and are now available to us Americans.
They are listed on Newegg, Amazon and Tigerdirect and listed to have the same specs as the Acer 1410. Interestingly, Newegg claims the Acer 1410 gets up to 6 hours of battery life whereas this Gateway gets up to 7 hours. However, I see pictures of both and they look just about identical, the battery sizes look identical to me as well.

1810T series owners, please check your keyboards!
I had my keyboard changed at the importeur because of the defective function in right and left arrow keys. The new keyboard is as bad. The real reason escaped me two weeks until I discovered today that especially the horizontal arrow keys are so bad that pushing them in their upper border they do not register (produce any cursor movement).
Now I would like to know if you others have as bad keyboards. So please push especially those arrow keys at their upper border. Do they work OK? If yes, then the whole series of keyboards here in Finland are crap, and I may visit the importeur again, telling about your experiences. -
I wonder where the 1810TZ is in the US...
I figured we would have seem some signs of it by now. -
I am still guessing that we will have to wait until mid-late October to see this appear in the states. I am betting that they are waiting for Windows 7. In the meantime I already orderd my 5600 mAh battery and if the 1810TZ doesn't come with it here in the US then I have one already. If it DOES come with a bigger battery then I may just sell this one with my 1410.
-
I'm thinking, worse comes to worst, if they do not release the 1810tz in the U.S., what are the chances one can buy it internationally? Is online an option and what about ebay? There will be a cost premium almost certainly, but is that at least an option ?
Personally, I might be traveling through either Dubai or Singapore international airports (but not venturing outside into the nations) later this year. Given both these airports have huge shopping malls, does anyone know if it might be possible to buy the 1810tz from the airport malls? The dual-core 1410/1810tzs are available in both these nations! -
I guess I'm a little confused, with the talk about adding a bluetooth module, where exactly would it fit? I don't see an open port for it inside my 1410?
-
The connector is below the touchpad.
Mine work fine. -
wow the gateway looks exactly like the acer
-
Not all too surprising, after all Acer did buy out Gateway.

Acer 1410 for $399: http://www.jr.com/acer-computer/pe/...are&SiteID=Es5Ekr9eEBk-10qTdzY2ZPxwbaDQc4B1ug
This might be a price drop because of the upcoming TZ model. Who knows. -
Geeze...
The AS1410 price is back up to $449.
But shocking to see the following added onto the JR.com listings:
" Clearance Item: Limited Availability, New, 100% Guaranteed"
Clearing the AS1410 for the new Core-2-Duo
I never expected Acer might stop selling the Core-2-Solo in the US. -
They may continue with the Core Solo, just stop selling it with Vista.
-
Given Asus North America has reportedly declared they'll only sell a Core 2 Duo UL20a in the U.S., maybe Acer is adjusting their future offerings accordingly.
Either ways, I hope this wait ends very soon! -
Which Synaptics driver is the newest? I have 12.2.4.1 which came installed on my 1410. I did an update driver and it says this is the newest available.
-
I'm accumulating tips for when I purchase an 1810TX, so I have no real experience.
But I've learned not to update drivers unless there is a problem,
or I'm lacking a feature that a new driver specifically corrects.
Read page one of the AS1410 &1810 Tweaks here for information and links to newer Synaptic's drivers. -

$399.99+$5.00 shipping.
Looks like it's a one day sale. I was in the market for a netbook only to find out this thing is a borderline notebook! How have you guys liked the 1410 so far? Is it worth the $400 for this thing? I am considering the Asus EEE over this.
Thanks -
The 1410 is far superior to any EEE PC. In performance and features.
At $399 it's a steal. Here's my review: http://acer1810treview.blogspot.com/ -
For those interested in back-up the system disk ... I have done it with Acronis TruImage Homa 2010, a external DVD/CD Player/recorder via USB and external USB HD attached to a second USB port. It did work booting Acronis in Safe Mode (Full Mode does not work, I suspect due to graphics).
It took about 1 hour to save my C partition, with all the programs I use installed (Office, Graphics Programs, etc... etc...). In total the partition was 39Gbs ... the resulting back-up file was 16 Gb.
Other configurations will be possible, like making another partition in the 250Gb disk; etc...
Cheers. -
I upgraded from an EEE PC 1000HE to the Acer 1410.
Comparison: To me, the only inherent advantage of an EEE PC (Atom processor) vs. this Acer is battery life, at least for now, and slightly better portability with the smaller EEE. I get about 4.5 hours battery in Windows 7 on my Acer (US model, smaller battery), which is what 1saleaday is offering. In contrast, I got 6.5-7 hours battery on my EEE; some of the neswer models would get 8+ hours. As far as build quality, my EEE seemed a lot more durable than the Acer - keyboard, screen hinge, etc. But I think the Acer will be fine unless dropped or abused.
Performance: Definitely go with the Acer. For comparison, I encoded a 60-minute WAV to MP3 on my Acer 1410, and it took ~6.5 minutes, compared to my work laptop (Dell D530 w/ Core2Duo 2GHz) at 4.5 minutes, compared to the Asus 1000HE at ~15 minutes. Windows is more responsive, too, not just benchmarks/rendering tasks.
Other options: You could wait about 4 weeks until Windows 7 comes out, then get a dual-core CULV laptop for ~$450, or maybe this Acer for less than $400 at that time. Except for Flash video or certain other CPU-intensive tasks, I doubt you'll notice much improvement with a dual-core - the single-core SU3500 w/ 3MB L2 cache in the Acer 1410 is pretty snappy. I heard Flash is supposed to be released soon with an update that supports offloading some of the rendering to the video card, so playback might improve even on the Acer. -
Half of the keys on mine didn't work. I returned it. Some of the number keys worked, but oddly, it would alternate which ones worked - 5 didn't work 6 did, 8 worked, 9 didn't. Really odd.

Too bad red is not my color--

My brother-in-law was in town recently and had a chance to compare the my AS1410 to his Asus 1005ha and he prefered the Acer in every aspect except battery life. My Acer gets about 4-4-1/2 hrs out of Vista or Ubuntu and he's getting 8-9 hrs with XP on his Asus.
The Acer isn't much bigger than the Asus and there isn't a noticeable difference in weight. He felt that the Acer was for all practical purposes just as easy to handle as the Asus. He found the keyboard to be more usable and liked the larger screen. He had tried using Eclipse on the Asus and found the there just wasn't enough screen to use it effectively but said he would happily use the Acer because of the increased screen resolution and larger keyboard. Now he has is eyes on either the new 1410tz or Asus UL20a.
His top priority with a netbook or ultra portable is battery life. In his opinion if you have to plug it in, then it's not really portable. I tend to agree. Acer really should have given us (in the states) the 5600wh battery. I would prefer to get closer to 8hrs with normal use, but I like mine otherwise. Also the screen is very bright, so it's no problem running very dim. I could probably get 5+ hours out of the battery if I tried, but I like to listen to music while I use it.
~$450 for the dual core CULVs?? Really? I was thinking they would be more like $550-$600... -
CC has blue for $449 - 10.3% Bing CashBack. Net cost is about the same, but you'll have to wait for the CashBack.

@ohiomoto - I misread this article: http://www.liliputing.com/2009/09/toshiba-launches-thin-and-light-laptops-with-intel-culv-chips.html
Looks like the Toshiba T115 will probably have a Celeron as the cheapest option @ $450. Hard to tell at this point. I would guess the dual-core (probably Su4100?) will add $50-100 at least. So your estimate of $550-600 is probably pretty close.
But then we thought the Acer 1410 was going to be $500+ in the US, and it turned out to be $450 and now they're clearancing it at some stores, so who knows? Could be good deals especially if MS does another double cashback promo around Black Friday and/or Christmas.
They'd have to come down a long way in price though before I'd consider replacing the 1410 I got for ~$350. -
It should have been $500...with the bigger battery!
Sounds like the UL20a will be $599 with a dual-core and great battery life. I hope this is correct. I would love to have a little more power and longer battery. I'm not sure I want to drop $600 on one (I paid ~$360 for my 1410), but it would replace my Vostro 1400. At fist, I thought I would jump at it at $599, but now I think if I would like to get something like that for $450-$500. To me the faster processor and bigger batter life are worth about $100 more than I paid for the 1410. -
Thanks for this Rahul!!!
I have been lurking here for quite some time trying to decide on one of these new CULV laptops. I've gone through several netbooks, starting with the everex "cloudbook" and currently I'm saddled with the eee 1000h and its less than splitting-atom power. I have back-peddled on the 1410 due to its two tone ugly and I have been hoping for a version of the ec1803u to hit the states with a not-so-Canadian keyboard...and alas it has arrived!!! Newegg here I come! -
I don't see the option for cashback when paying with PayPal.
-
One other difference is the way the screen sits. The hinges sit higher and the screen further away from the case. Purely cosmetic though. As well the palm rests are dimpled like a golf ball. Battery is the same 4400mah 6hour battery

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
SU4100 coming to 11z in US Dell 11z becomes a better competitor.
-
I've noticed too that on the Newegg listing for the ec1803u, that this version comes with 2GBs of ram as dual-channel 1GB sticks....nevertheless this thing is all kinds of sexy compared to the [deb]acer.
P.S. From what I've read, the 11z's trackpad/button config. is jacked to the point that it is almost unusable...
P.S.S. Per gizmodo, GPU accelerated Flash is coming Oct. 5th .... Ion vs. Culv -the grunge match continues. -
You need to have a Bing CashBack account. Go to Bing, search "Circuit City" or "Tiger Direct", click the link, search "a180-116*", find the AS1410. It should show the Bing CashBack amount.

Acer Ferrari One reviewed by Cnet!
http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39030093,49303769,00.htm -
I'm not sure...I would imagine that there would be a period of exclusivity, sense it's their R&D in the kitty. However, I think eventually we'll see this applied more universally....or maybe flash will be replaced with something lighter...silverlight?

Hi guys, I kinda need help in a jiffy, I bought an acer1410(US model, single core, 2g ram, etc). But it is not shipped yet, so now I am considering canceling the order for hp dv2 since I can get it for $450+external dvd drive.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834147987
the specs on dv2 looks awesome but it has really mixed reviews..what do you guys think?? -
Well the dv2 look very nice for that price, I'd probably go for it and cancel the 1410. What is the price of the Acer btw?
In case you haven't read it yet an extended review(and a bunch of people opinions) of dv2 can be found here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=371942 -
where the heck are you buying it for 450!? the review says it should be around 700US
-
I'm gonna guess it has something to do with his Newegg link.
-
HAHA. I have no idea how that bright blue link got by my hawk-like eyes. but the newegg link indicates it's still 500US. where's the extra 50 dollar saving coming from?
-
No idea... Maybe they raised the price, or there was some coupon promotion.
-
I was reading about 1410 on acer.com
* 2GB (2GB installed in one of two memory slots) DDR2 667 SDRAM
User upgradeable up to 4GB (one 2GB memory card in each slot) subject to availability of 2GB cards*
*If upgrading after initial purchase, one or more of the memory cards provided with the system may have to be replaced with optional larger memory cards in order to achieve the maximum capacity.
what does the last part mean?
and can I put 2 800mhz in it? how much faster would it be than 2x 667? thanks
EDIT:: @korean_boi: it is with a newegg promo code. look it up in slickdeals
