@ mali:
would it be an idea to buy another of the 2gb ram as already delivered with the 1810T, then flashing them both to 800 MHz, as you described earlier?
would be my favourite tweak.
-
I went to a local PC retailer store and got another Acer 1410. Brought it home and swapped out Samsung 2GB unlockable module for Hyniux 2GB same spec module I had laying around. Made sure laptop recognizes my 2GB stick and returned it back to the store. I mean, no harm done, right?
I now have 2x2GB Samsung unlocked 800MHz modules in my 1410
-
So how did the undervolting MOD go? Is it working out for you? What voltage are you running at and how stable is it?
Could you please write a detailed guide with photos on what exactly has to be done to the motherboard to enable overclocking and hardware undervolting on 1410. I have a friend who has access to high precision enterprise grade soldering tools and he might be able to help with the mod.
I was also wondering if the overclocking mod disables Intel Speedstep or does it simply unlock the OC? -
This idea is very good and actually the same thing that I'm doing right now
I've bought a second Samsung 2GB module off eBay and am waiting for delivery right now. I bought a Kingston 2x2GB kit and wasn't pleased with its overclocking performance. After all Samsung seems to be a much more reliable brand.
I've posted instructions in Timeline Tweaks. I would like to do some photos but I don't have a proper camera, so I made a small schematic with MS paint that shows the critical components. I've activated VID2 so that 0.9V becomes 0.85V and 0.875V becomes 0.825V. 1.75GHz/0.85V is stable, when setting 0.825V through RMC I get a BSOD. 0.825V at default SuperLFM and even at 1.4GHz is no problem. Basically I got rid of having to use RMC or CPUID to undervolt.
The overclocking MOD just disables trusted mode on the PLL and allows SetFSB to do software overclocking. -
Looks like Toshiba http://hothardware.com/News/Toshiba-Introduces-Sleek-And-Slim-Satellite-T100-Series/ is going to offer a nice alternative to the 1810TZ. Honestly, I wouldn't even be looking for an alternative at this point, if Acer would just announce the release of the 1810tz in North America. I realize that they're probably waiting 'till October 22nd for the release, but announce it already!!! Especially when Acer's competition is announcing their offerings, it might be a good idea to let consumers know that they have a competitive product to offer as well. Because I can tell you, if October 22nd comes around and Acer is still sitting on the fence, I will be buying the T115 or whatever else might pop up between now and then.
At least with Toshiba, I finally have an official announcement that I will be able to purchase the hardware I want in the United States. With Acer I don't know if it will be the 1810TZ, some alternative model with a smaller battery, or nothing at all! I was excited about the Asus UL20a untill I discovered it has no HDMI port, and it was nice to see Dell's recent announcement about the 11Z, but between the unusual track pad and the high capacity battery not being flush with the chassis, I think I'll be avoiding that one. So, at this point it's looking like Toshiba will be getting my money.
Less than three weeks to go Acer (tick, tock)! -
Acer probably doesn't want to hurt the 1410 sales.
-
Ya got a point Metallion. I'm really looking forward to the 1810, or whatever they are going to call it in the States, but if they don't get a move on, I'm seriously looking at the Toshiba or HP 11.6 inchers. I think I'd lean towards the Toshiba because of the better build quality.
-
Which timings can be achived with stock memory unlocked to 800MHz and stock voltage(1,8V probably)?
-
The timings should be left at 6-6-6-18. Everything more aggressive will most likely crash.
-
Acer 1410 as a portable server - get the 1410 now or wait for the dual core version? Would a server benefit from dual core (albeit with only 2mb cache) or stick with the single core?
-
Looks like Ill be getting that Toshiba, unless Acer's dual core version comes out at a cheaper price within that week the toshiba gets released. Seems like it has everything the 1810TZ has.
-
Well, the Acer has gigabit ethernet whereas the Toshiba doesn't. That's an important feature IMHO. I do agree with you though. It's frustrating that Acer hasn't announced the dual core model in the US yet. :confused2:
-
I'm pretty much set on the 1810tz, but are there any other viable competitors lined up? It would be nice to have something similar without all that glossy surface. The t100 looks good but as stereodude said, acer is still on top.
-
Plus you CAN solve the glossiness somewhat with the NuShield. I highly recomend that you try out one of their $25 DayVue shields. It has helped cut down on glare (atlhough it is STILL somewhat noticeable) and this screen is usable outside now if you turn up brightness a bit. It is still somewhat hard to see in direct sunlight but MUCH better than the default.
BTW, I am now testing the 5600 mAh battery and so far I am seeing a little over 1-1.5 hours of extra life. It will take a couple of discharges and possibly a battery bar reset before I get my actual number but so far I am happy with the new battery and also happy with the reseller. This seems to be an OEM battery that I got from that Cheap Laptop Batteries site. I paid about $90 shipped (the price keeps jumping around) and got it in 2 weeks. Looks to be an OEM Acer battery and the size is identical to the 4400 mAh battery. It is just a TINY bit heavier.
My WISH list for the 1810TZ includes the dual-core (given) AND a blue tooth that is built-in so that I can just hit the button the front and it works. I am somewhat fine with my little bluetooth dongle but I would like to have that extra USB open in case I need it and it just seems cooler to have it built-in. I would also like to see the 5600 mAh battery in the US but I've got that solved if they stick with the smaller battery (heck 2 batteries is fine anyway). -
Acer was far ahead of the marketing curve with the 1410/1810T. So we should see a model with the SU7300 cpu, along with the SU4100. Considering both Asus and Toshiba will have an SU7300.
And I cannot believe the US model would not have Bluetooth & the 5600 battery.
My hope for built-in 3G is fading, though. I don't understand why it is rarely mentioned as a viable option. -
how long are your win7 RTM boot times?
mine gets stuck on "starting windows" for a good solid 60-90seconds.. did i mess something up? how can i fix it? i've only clean installed win7 for a day and im regretting it =[.. -
Im using W7 Pro FINAL x64bit and my boot time has always been less than 30 seconds. Currently I have AHCI mode enabled in 3117 BIOS and latest Intel Storage Manager + chipset drivers.
You might want to read here and here. -
i installed W7 on my 1410 and have seen my battery life dropped from 6hrs in vista to 4hrs now. anyone else seeing the same thing?
-
I have not tweaked anything, but I'm not getting much over 4hrs out of Vista or Ubuntu. Maybe your Vista install was "optimized" and your W7 isn't?
-
I have 2x2GB RAM at 5-5-5-18 timings by default. If I set it to 6-6-6-18, do you think my crashes might stop? How would I set it to that?
mem-test pic
http://img203.yfrog.com/img203/7590/98771573.png
I can't change the first 5 to any other value. And after a restart, it seems to go right back to 5-5-5-18 from 5-6-6-18. Does everything else look okay? -
In the 11.6"-12.1" CULV space: HP DM1, Asus UL20, Dell 11z, MSI U200.
Acer 1810Tz will probably have the best package for the money.
I think there is something about that in the Timeline Tweaks:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=419117 -
I installed Win7 64 bit from day 1 and even with the default drivers I booted very quickly (probably moe like 45 seconds). I also have a 320 GB 7200 rpm HD and 4 GBs of 800 Mhz RAM. The new drivers only made things better.
-
Plus two more 11.6" contenders:
the Toshiba T110 (T115 in the US), and the Samsung X120.
Both of which have been sighted with SU7300 CPUs & HDMI. -
My comment was directed at those 667MHz Samsung modules 'modified' to run at 800MHz. If the RAM you bought is 5-5-5-18, then it will work just fine at that speed.
You should really RMA your device. Save your time trying to find a different solution. If your RAM slot is faulty there is nothing you can do about it. -
Just ordered my Aspire Burst (Staples' 1410) for 350$ cad + tax (400$ after tax). Was it a good deal or should i have waited for the 1410tz?
Btw, i got a 3GB version, do you know what type/specs of RAM is in those machine coz it's a 1x2GB + 1x1GB.. -
It's probably 667mhz DDR2 RAM like all the others. You could easily find out for yourself with a program like CPU-Z.
I would say you got a fairly good deal for it. Here in the states you can expect to pay 439-449 USD, and if you do some Bing cashback stuff you get around 400 USD. The whole online tax vs no tax and bing cashback no cashback thing really skewers the "deal" aspect. You didn't get ripped off though by a long shot.
Waiting for the Tz is all about patience and needs. For HD movies, which is my main reason for this machine, you don't need the Tz. The Tz doesn't launch until 22nd, and even then I don't think there's an official NA release date. It'll definitely be more expensive than 449 USD on launch as well.
The 1410 is a fine machine without the SU4100 imo. I can really only see the Tz being useful for people who really want to use YoutubeHD, because if you're trying to game or do video encoding or something on this machine, you really bought the wrong type of notebook. It's one of the most powerful netbooks in this size/category, but it isn't supposed to be able to go head to head with 13-15 inchers with real C2D's and video cards and such.
Does anyone know if that group buy thing for carbon fiber foil is still gonna happen? -
The Samsung reportedly has gigabit ethernet. Too bad they're all glossy screens.
-
I wish this were correct, as an extra MB of L2 cache would be great. However, according to everything I've seen, these two models use the SU4100.
As far as gigabit ethernet goes, that would be nice, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I'll be using it wirelessly 99.9% of the time anyway, and both models have Draft N wireless. Also, most of the data I put on my laptop will simply be transferred from my desktop on my small home network. I do see though where this would be important to someone with a different intended application than me. I'm actually more concerned about the track pad on the Samsung.
I'm still hoping that Acer will just bring the 1810TZ to the US in a strong configuration, but as of the 22nd, I'm done waiting. -
2MB vs. 3MB L2 cache won't make much difference...
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
-
I've had my replacement 1410 for a few days now. Not one freeze up even after switching in the 4gb of ram. I think I can safely say now that it was a hardware issue. So far, battery bar is saying I have 5.75 hours of battery life. Not too shabby
-
Good to hear
-
okay i give up. win7 is causing so much troubles on this netbook. there are so much software capability issues and lack of win7 drivers. i could dl vista drivers and it works but my boot time goes over 90seconds (had to clean install win7 3 times to realize it was the drivers).
is there a way to reinstall the stock vista home premium? or do i have to buy a new 1. -
Did you make backup CDs before you blew away Vista? There should have been an option to do that on the Vista partition. Also, are you using Win7 32 bit or 64 bit? If you haven't tried 64 bit I would also try that becuase I have had ZERO problems. It is also possible that you have some defective hardware as others have reported.
-
Did you try updating to the newest BIOS? 3117 fixed the long boot time for most of us so far. Or you could try enabling the IDE interface in the Registry and setting the drive to IDE.
Once you get the boot time solved, everything else should be straightforward - just get the latest drivers (many of the ones on the Acer site for Vista x32 Home Premium actually include x64 drivers as well).
Everything you should need to get Windows 7 x64 running flawlessly is here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=419117 -
Send it to me

Anyone know where to buy an 1810TZ in UK yet?
-
Damn I want that sleeve. Don't want the others though hmm.
-
thanks for your reply.
i can install the x64 win7 professional but i only have 2gig 667 ram. should i still do that? -
Win7 runs fine on 2GB,
-
There is a hidden partition on the harddrive with the OEM image on it. Look in your BIOS (or hit F8??) and you should be able to boot that partition and it will write Vista back to C.
-
Hey, thanks for the reply i appreciate it. I'm using it mainly as a media player too (for 1080p mkvs). I can't wait to see how it handles it. I'm using CoreAVC.
-
im thinking more about the x64 version, since 64bit uses more memory, or so i heard.
-
If you are going to install Win7 (I recommend it) then use Shark007 codec pack for Win7 and then use WMP. It provides the best results.
I'm using the stock 2GB 667 RAM right now with Win7 x64 RTM and it works fine. -
I personally think that 64 bit Windows code is better than 32 bit code. This is definitely how Vista was for me so I personally assume that Win7 i sthe same. So, I just naturally went with 64 bit Win7 and haven't looked back. I am using 4 GB of RAM but I am sure that 2 GB would work just fine.
-
Not sure where I saw the Toshiba T110 with an SU7300.
But the 11.6" Samsung SU7300 is currently being sold in Europe - one of many links.
And the Asus UL20a with an SU7300 is available in China and Taiwan, at least. -
guys, I just upgraded the ram in my 1410 and totally forgot to remove the battery beforehand.. I powered down though. The laptop seems to be working fine after the upgrade, what could I have damaged by not removing the battery first?
-
I've done that myself many times before and never had any issues. If your computer works fine then don't worry about it! The system is very idiot proof anyway
.
-
It doesn't use more RAM. I've installed it on way less before.
-
Powering down is enough, the RAM isn't powered when the device is off. It's a different story when in standby, though.
