The toshiba I listed above has SU4100 processor which is dual core. The experience my wife had with her Toshiba satellite U305 was also pretty bad. However, if I get the above spec for under 500 with SU4100 processor I think thats a fair deal compared to Acer 1810Tz which is priced at 549 with the same SU4100 processor. An eSATA port is a real good addition I think. I also found a
HP Pavilion dm3 at office depot for only 499 with probably better specs.

Uh... There are only three T115 models and none of them have a dual core processor.

    One - Celeron 743

    Two - SU2700

    Three - SU2700

I meant my comment about the battery life was about the 13.3" timelines. As for which sizes the battery will be available in, I don't know yet.

i've searched many sites with mixed responses, but i'm leaning towards a YES...

Is there any difference between this Gateway EC1436u and the new 1410. Both priced at 399 and if I am correct, gateway is now owned by acer? between these should someone prefer one over the other.

Other than that, would you recommend one over the other? (Acer 1410 vs. Gateway EC1435?) OR, the Toshiba T115 S1105?

    Thanks.

It's still rock solid on mine. Some other people did the mod with mixed success. Some just work normally, one locks up(might be because of the Silego PLL, mine is IDT) and one mod caused a short circuit(didn't hear back from him yet).

Good news, I got the SU3500 and it arrived with a dead pixel (blessing in disguise). JR gave me an RMA # and is issuing a prepaid return label. She said no restocking fee (yay!). I placed an order for the dual core version through bing's 5% off.

This had me worried, as I just preordered one of the Timelines with the SU2300 chip (which I know are the same as the Gateway models), and I was assuming it was 3.08 lbs, not 3.79. As far as I can tell, Gateway is confused in its own press release. If you scroll down the page to the specs in the press release, you can see that the EC1410u is listed as 3.08 lbs. It's only in the text that it's listed as 3.79 lbs.

You can also check out their lineup here. You can see there that all computers in the EC14xx series weigh 3.08 lbs (box weight 3.93 lbs).

I have no idea where the 3.79 lb. figure comes from.

I don't think there's a restocking fee to begin with unless you really messed with the laptop. According to their policy page, a restocking fee is a potential if it isnt returned in it's original condition. Good thing I didn't jump the gun and toss the box into the recycling bin.

Is it OK if I put FireFox and a few simple files on the drive, then deleted them before returning it? I hope they don't require the drive to be in the exact bit-for-bit state it was in when new. I got an RA# from J&R on the 1410 I bought and they set up a new order for me to exchange it for an 1810T. They were nice enough to not require full payment on the 1810T, just the additional amount over the 1410's price.

Here's hoping it all works out...!

Hi, here is an HP Pavilion dm3-1030us 13.3" Widescreen Notebook Computer With AMD Athlon™ Neo X2 Dual-Core Processor L335 for only $499 after $50 rebate + free shipping.

Neo X2 Dual-Core Processor L335 has a passmark score of 873 which is higher than that of acer 4100. It also comes with a 320 GB (7200 rpm) hard drive and 4GB RAM, aslo ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics. Only downside is no gigabite ethernet, weighs around 4.2 lbs. rest everything pretty comparable if not better. Is this note a better deal than Acer timeline?

    Please help me decide..

I can't believe the dm3 is so cheap - I saw guesstimates around $700-$800. I wonder if the dm1 will be $399 after rebates and such - it has the same specs as the 1410/Gateways mentioned above.

It's different animal, but it looks like a great 13.3" deal.

I bet you'll never see 6-hours of battery life out of it though. If I went to a larger display, I would want every bit of that extra space devoted to a larger battery. Acer's upcoming 12-hour battery might be enough for me to consider a 13.3". But I wont get it for $500 either.

Frankly, I am fine with 4-5 hours of battery. Inst this machine more powerful than the acer 1810? I noticed it only has a 512KB L2 cache, in spite of a faster processor. Is that something to be worried. Discrete graphics, 7200 rpm hard drive, and 4 Gigs RAM are real plus points. Not having an optical drive even with a 13.3" screen is a negative too. But I red its key board is spill proof and the keyboard really looks nice...

Good luck on it. Fortunately for me it was returned as a defect. I was going to tell you to look on the bright side and if they charge you restocking fee, consider it an upgrade cost. But pondering futher, 15% is a lot!!

I'm willing to forego the 15% for my own stupidity of not keeping up with the 1810's arrival. I just hope they don't reject the exchange for some reason.

I saw that Best Buy & other retailers have their Windows 7 computers on display already. You can't buy them yet (as the sign in Wal-Mart said, "Can't be SOLD tell 12:01 a.m."). Newegg confirmed my order today- I wonder why they can't/didn't confirm a few days ago for arrival tomorrow?

FYI- I e-mailed Gateway about the 3.79 lb weight in their press release, and they confirmed that it was a typo. Definitely 3.08 lbs.

I really don't see why people are so stressed out about an extra 0.71 lbs. It seems like people won't buy a laptop for the slightest amount of extra weight these days... Everywhere you go people are overly conserned about weight, in my opinion. I could honestly care less. Specs and size are what matter to me.
I mean really, it's not going to kill you to cary something that doesn't even weigh a whole 4 lbs. And even if it did weigh 4 lbs, I'm sure you've had books heavier that you've had to carry somewhere before.

There is a hidden partition on the hard drive that will return you machine to factory settings. You might want to consider using it, but I don't see how that will avoid the restocking fee.

If 2.8 lbs can be achieved with a 13.4" notebook, then why couldn't 11.6" be 3 lbs or less?

    http://www.amazon.com/MSI-X340-021U...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1256176709&sr=8-1

And yes, I do own a 15.4" Clevo that weigh over 7 lbs.

The messenger bag I carry to work every day is already heavy enough to set off the airbag sensor in the passenger seat in my car. If that bag gets any heavier I'm going to develop a limp like Quasimodo. Every pound helps!

I have seen the new models with Win7 wich is branded as AS1810. Does anybody know if these will be available in Europe, and Sweden in particular?

I have been waiting for the Win7 launch as it seems for ages now, and once we are here there is no mention of any new models for Acer anywhere in Sweden that I can see.

I have no clue why people waited more then 3 months for the 1810TZ version here in The Netherlands. It's now common on the market, however same specs except for the SU4100. Difference for me is 3 months 1810T pleasure and 50 euro in my advance

Well, I had another laptop to use... ;)

I am waiting though for the perfect cost/performance ratio and it is emerging now. Just need to get a hold of it.

Btw, the launch of Win7 in Sweden is postponed until October 31, in case someone was curious. So I hope the AS- models will pop up then.

I bought my 1410 four days ago. Everything is fine, just one small thing that kind of bothers me. The keyboard doesn`t seem to be very well atached. Especially the left side of it. When I type, has a movement up and down which gives the feeling of a cheap built quality. Do you experience the same ?

First comment I've noticed about a problematic ~1410/1810 keyboard.
Try out display models at a local retail store before returning to Acer for repair.

What? Lol. I've had my hands on about four 1410s from a local store and ALL of them had defective keyboards. The most defective one was on my 1410 :p A few buttons weren't properly attached and keyboard was literally sticking out because it was bent. I had to take it off to reattach the keys and bend the keyboard flat. Now it is as solid as a rock with no flex :D

Anybody have a problem with "Programs and Features" in control panel?

Every time I open it to delete some program, it hangs up the computer. It takes a while - about 1-2 min. - to bring it back to life.

I installed the latest Bios- 1.20 but still the problem persists.

Yeah, I did it myself. It only takes like 2minutes really. Just look at dissasembly guide here it should give you an idea. You only need to disconnect it from power, take out the battery and you can go for the keyboard! Also, when you press those tabs at the top be gentle on them and use a credit card to slide under the keyboard. It really simplifies things. And don't forget to properly disconnect/reconnect the keyboard ribbon.

    Cheers!

Does anyone know if the 1410 uses SATA2 or SATA1? I know it has a GS45 chipset, and that would normally mean SATA2. But it seems that many notebook mfgs use a neutered version which can only achieve SATA1 speeds. I want to put an SSD in the 1410 but only if it's going to be used to it's full potential. SATA1 limits the SSD to about 100mb/s instead of the usual 200mb/s range.

I also have a cdn keyboard and the problem I've found so far with it is the small left shift key. When I go to use that shift key, I inadvertently press the one next to it. It is a key I never use, so I fixed the problem by remapping that key to also be a shift key.

Are there other issues that I'm not aware of that would make you buy a new keyboard rather than remapping the original?

Not sure which model you're considering, but as you can see by my post over in the "dual core" thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5436802&posted=1#post5436802 playback of AVCHD was a breeze for the 1810T (SU7300). Based on my observations I wouldn't expect the 1410 (SU2300 or SU3500) to have any problems at all. Can't say for sure though, obviously.

When you say 1080i, I assume you mean 1920x1080 60i (meaning 60 fps interlaced). All my AVCHD footage is at 1920x1080 30p (30 fps progressive) but I don't think it would make any real difference as far as CPU load. My camcorder will do 60i, so I suppose I could shoot some footage and test that theory...

I'll let you know what I come up with. :)
