That's what I meant - since 2001 every laptop we have owned, except the last several years, has been a convertible Tablet PC ... once you experience the amazing versatility of a convertible, that's what you always want.

PROBLEM WAS, until Windows 7 made a big deal about "multi-touch" LCD screens, the market virtually DIED!!

A recipient of a 1420p is accepting questions on this forum. He says he prefers it over the HP TX2 for feel and weight.

He is claiming it is a capacitive screen and very responsive like his iPhone.

Well he may be wrong about the capacitive part, it IS good to hear that it's iPhone-like in response.

I can't blame him for confusing it with capacitive. Even I am still used to those very squishy display overlays that were used in 2004, and even today in some devices. It just means it's THAT great.

    hi , from singapore.

just signed up for mine 1820PTZ-413G32n today with my isp
only difference is that it coming with a 500gig harddisk.

was told i can collect it from acer only on dec4

    http://www.singnet.com.sg/plans_and_services/broadband/snbb.asp?snbb=10Matl

most prob will be checking with acer during collection on the cost of upgrading it to 1820P

by the way, anyone have any idea, if the wwan : hsdp feature are provided or have to buy some module of some kind?

by the way, the listed price for the 1820PTZ in singapore with a 320gig harddisk.
    is about 1.25k sgd..

Does anyone know whether the Acer - for the US market - will be released as a 1420 series or 1820 series so we can start looking ... any rumors as to when?

The whole Microsoft PDC release has got me really excited - I just watched the keynote by Steven Sinofsky - President for all Windows - and HE SAID that Microsoft co-developed it WITH Acer and "made sure" that it had ALL of the latest and greatest!

That hasn't happened at Microsoft that I can recall and is very significant that it WAS NOT HP or Dell!

Well they are two different models, the 1420s will come with a dual core Celeron while the 1820s will come with core 2 duos. I assume they will both be coming to America, the 1420's being closer to the 600-700 dollar range and the 1820s being in the 700-800 range.

No official release date, just in the ball park of 'before Christmas'

Picked a couple of his comments... interesting.
Hope Acer is working on the weak hinge issue.

"This laptop is light. I'd almost say too light. At least the base is too light to support the display once the angle of the display to the verticle exceeds about 15 degrees, at which point the laptop flips over. The hinge on the screen is a little weak as well, and once past 25 degrees to vertical, the display slowly falls to horizontal."

"The keyboard is really different from my Toshiba. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I write novels, and I'm a bad typist. So every adjustment in key position is a double whammy. The keys are more comfortable for me now than I first thought they would be. They are a lot rougher in feel than the Toshiba, but a lot of people like that. Maybe I will too after a while."

And this from a beta.blogs.microsoft site here.

"How to connect the built-in Acer 1420Ptx 3G modem
to the internet using your local cellular vendor."

Be sure you have a DATA package from your 3G provider.

Turn off your 1820p, and remove the battery
Insert your USIM+ card in the sim slot (see thumbnail)
Connect the battery and turn on your machine.

After booting Windows 7, move the 3G switch located at
the front of the laptop panel to the left.
A dialog may appear, asking for access point.
You may need to call your cellular vendor, asking for details.

    Hi Jorge,

It is not strange for me, taking in mind that the 1810TZ is not yet anounced in the spanish Acer website and it is sold in several phisical shops here in barcelona, since 2-3 weeks ago.

I hope the estimated date (1st of december) will be finnally Ok, or perhaps even slighly before ;)

    hey everyone,

I have being following this thread mainly as a guest for over a month.

I'm sure I've read all 24 pages; but there is one thing i've yet to read that has been discussed over in the 1410/1810 thread:

That is upgrading the the hdd to a SSD X-25M G2.

After seen these CrystalDiskMark results from Kermee I was sold. Notice how high the all important 4K Read/Write speeds are. I'm wondering what are the 4K write speeds on the 1820 OTB are? I would guess they could not be any higher than 2MB/s.

Right now there are no alternatives on the horizon, on this price class/spec sheet.

(Have been hunting for 1820P news ever since I heard about its existence back in October. I already own a 1810T.)

It looks like the 1820PTZ is now also appearing in webshops in The Netherlands:
    http://www.kieskeurig.nl/zoeken/index.html?q=1820PTZ

Currently 4 shops show up in this search:
    - None have the item in stock
    - Prices are around EUR 560-EUR 570
    - Has SU4100, 3GB memory
    - Not much other details, from what I see (HDD size)

Searches on 1820P and 1820PT in this and other shop search engines still show up nothing.

Yep. It's official now. I believe America will get it in January now. And it will be the lesser 1420P version. What makes me say that? The UK got the 1810T a month before us, and when we got it it was stripped down to a 1410. I see this happening again. We'll get what the Microsoft attendants got here in the US first, I'm sure of it.

This is not what I want. No, sir.

Since these are spec'd with DDR3 and th S3500 is no more we may see only the PTZ at first. It could also be like the 1810's where the TZ's are around but the T's are a hard find. We won't know for sure until it happens.

I was hot and bothered over the 1810T untill I saw these were coming. I was hot and bothered until today over getting a UL30vt until I opened my U81a in the car to reset my GPS. The 13.3" is not small enough for me. My LT3103u was the perfect size just too lacking in the CPU department.

The SU7300 is more than enough power for what I need from an ultraportable device. Having the added tablet feature in an ultraportable is just that much more of a plus. The GMA4500 is more than enough video for me too.

I would love to see them put in an overclock util like Asus's Turbo33. Since these are basically the same chipsets with DDR3 1066 they easily could do the same and run the CPU's fsb at 1066 instead of 800MHz. With the cut into battery life though I am not sure how usefull it would be, but nice to have the option though.

    http://www.intel.com/consumer/rating.htm

    SU2700 & SU4100's have 2/5 stars.
    SU7300 has 5/5 stars.

If price isn't an issue and you can wait a few weeks (if it is a few weeks), seems like a no-brainer to me ;)

su4100 & su7300 are the same except of virtualisation and l2 cache size.
1mb bigger cache affects perfomance only little, in best case 5-10% more perfomance.

For some strange reason, the above search link does not show results at the moment, even though attached shops still catalogue the item.

Here is direct link to one of the 4 Dutch shops that showed up:
    http://www.databyte.nl/LX.PNA02.043

That's cool. This was strangely absent on the 1810T, good that they're including it on the 1820 models.

There won't be a su2700 variety, I think you were mistaking it for the su2300, which has 1 star according to that website.

That being said, that website is pretty worthless. They're just organizing it by price.

IMO the SU4100 vs SU7300 is a tie. The ultraportables I've seen that have SU4100 out-preform ones with SU7300's but the SU4100 misses out on virtualization and 1mb of L2 cache (which is negligible based on the benchmarks)

The SU2300 is the budget friendly dual-core Celeron, which I don't know much about. Comparing the Acer 1410 vs 1810, I think it's slower and has less battery life.

I just can't see the tie. If anything what the SU7300 has what that the SU4100 misses, would at the least be considered the tiebreaker between the two.

For, by having virtualization you no longer have to double boot to get XP, a nice luxury. Further, there are Atoms (which we all can't stand, and not such a good comparison) processors that operate on on half that added L2 Cache at 512KB. Even if having that extra 1MB is only a 5%-10% difference, i'll take it, and would indicate a tiebreaker.

Thus it is not a tie. Now, if your just telling yourself that as a form of rationalizing in the event you end up with the former, then that's a different story. But, technically it is not.

That is histerical, it is Intel justifying their CPU's. The SU7300 is so little more than the SU4100. If the PTz had all the features just a CPU difference I'd happily got for it...........

Yes, the su7300 has more features that the su4100 misses but you pay for the extra features that aren't contributing to better performance.

These benchmarks I speak of are from laptopmag.com and aren't apples to apples; Just cases like where the Toshiba Satellite t135 (SU4100) beats the Asus UL30A (SU7300) and the Dell Inspiron 14z (SU7300). Isn't true in all cases, the HP Dm3 (SU7300) beats all of them.

It just shows the raw performance is virtually the same, as well as the battery life, while the price is cheaper.

Like I said , I'm getting the first one I can get my hands on.

I don't see the point of comparing pocessors that are meant to be low power using. In case of a corei7 i9 u name it desktop processor 5-10% performance boost makes sense. But here, I don't get you guys.

On the other hand when you compare their battery extending abilities: the su2300 seems to have the lowest possible undervolt(correct me if I'm wrong), and the su7300 has the SLFM mode which might be worth the extra cash for a person that would be squeezing every last bit of battery life out of it every day like me. But that feature isn't worth waiting for even an extra week in my case.

All the versions are good, with 4gb ddr3 the 4500mhd can also take advantage of that, + throw in an intel ssd and you have an amazing tablet with amazing battery life that before windows 7 popped up were worth over 2000$. If the rumored 9cell battery also shows up and is compatible we will have the portable tablet king until Arrandale shows up with the new Nvidia switchable graphics( to be unveiled at CES 2010 on 6-7 january) which by my intuition will show up in a product arround April.

Like I said, I don't see a point in comparing these procs, they all blow atom out of the water and they all handle multimedia with flying colors, any more than that and you are confusing the culv for something else.

    And on another note,

Since this is a tablet based thread I think we should also be discussing software we are planing to put on it and for what we are gonna use em.

For example , this should go without mention but, I'm gonna put the office 2010 beta on it, namely onenote. Taking handwritten notes in one note for me is gonna boost my productivity in class , and the freaking awesome part is that when I'm on the move , namely train/bus, I can easily review my materials. But honestly speaking, I'm probably gonna just be watching more shows, than studying in such a case :p. I dare a person to try to do college math in the train while standing and not owning a device like this.

Other than onenote , I'll be using some usefull firefox addons , ebook reader software, manga reading software, and a freeware for memorising called Anki that is the single most worth wile program to have with you on the go.

    Okay let me rephrase then...
If price isn't an issue, you can wait a few weeks (if it is a few weeks), and the features that the 7300 offers interest you, then it seems like a no-brainer to me :D

Nice to learn that the 7300 isn't much more powerful than the 4100 :) I have no need for virtualization and am fine giving up 5-10% cpu power for a cheaper price and quicker delivery date... I just thought 'Core 2 Duo' was where it's at now, and that Pentium & Celeron were lame nowadays.
