here is a picture showing that black plastic self adhesive frame: if you are using a quad core peel it off and clean well any trace of glue or tape from the heatsink !

Hi, I would like to ask you if the green pads are also important for the temperature of the system. I have cleaned and apply new thermal paste sometimes, but never these thermal pads. They are a little bit dirty and I don't know if this is important and if I can change them.

    Hi,
Whenever I move the lid of my laptop's screen, the display would sometimes become garbled or disappear entirely. This usually happens on first boot when I've just opened the screen. A slight wiggle brings the display back.

I've figured out that it's the cable connecting the motherboard to the display -- wiggling that causes the same effect. Otherwise the screen is perfectly fine.

I've had a search around for the cable (it has "JV50_CP LED CBL 50.4GD01.011 MEC REV:B01" written on it), but I can only find a similar cable (50.4GD01.0 21 instead of 50.4GD01.0 11). It's available on eBay here.

My question -- is the 50.4GD01.0 21 compatible with the 50.4GD01.0 11? Will the '2' version work on any 5740G?

Hi , the green Thermal pads are a sort of dissipation for chipsets on the mainboard : if they are still in good shape you can leave them where they are,

if they got badly "chewed " on removing the heatsink you could have a chance to replace them ; have a look on ebay for Thermal pads. cheers.

Ask your seller, he claims its for 5740, if it isn't, you can always return it.
I think there are no differences in this laptop to connect the screen, except for 50.4CG02.011, but that is a different cable.
( let us know if it works ;) )

I am trying to upgrade my memory with no luck.

I was given some pc3-12800 2x4gb. Put them in and blue screen. Tried each one in each slot one at a time and still bluescreen.

    is 12800 not supported?

edit: research said 10600 is the max. :(

It must be a compatibility problem. Do you have the latest BIOS ? Jedec norm guarantied backwards compatibility, even a 16000 must work on 10600 speed.
If you can returned it, do so, otherwise would it be recognised by BIOS ? If yes, can you do a memory test ?
( hit F5 during windows boot and choose memory test.)
If yes, try start in safe mode and start again, by no success of save mode, try a clean install.

Yea I saw it in the bios. Not sure what bios version I have (have to restart later). Did memory test and it passed. I also tried safe mode and it did not work.

Don't have the memory anymore (was trading my 4 for the 8).

Finally building USB 3 in laptop !

    IMG_0373.JPG IMG_0374.JPG IMG_0376.JPG IMG_0388.jpg IMG_0391.jpg IMG_0392.JPG

First I make some room with a cutting disk in a minidrill.like dremel.
Making an empty PCB same size as usb2 board and glue the plugs on it with
    2 comp. epoxy glue.
Remove con. and power plug from usb 3 pcb.

( I de-solder the pins, but its better to cut them off, pcb islands are very weak, I have to make some nasty repairs  )
    .
Glue power plug on free space and wired it, so I can disassembled the laptop without soldering. ( see 514 #5140 how it was )
Cutting the cables an solder them on the pcb.
Measured for short circuit and check functionality, both usb2 and 3, they used different cables.

    Usb2 - green/white
    Usb3 - yellow/blue and purple/orange

Usb3 must have the shielding cable as long as possible, usb2 is not critical.
Solder all the shielding to ground.

Watch for colour scheme, I saw 2 different on the internet, safe way is to measured you plug, its easy to destroy, same for connector. ( China quality :D )

Finally there is still space to place the modem back, but I decide not to do It,
I never used it and will never use it, it only take recourses.

I now you must have some solder/electronics' experience to do this, if you have not, ask a friend or leave it.

So, as a bonus, usb2 from D720202 is faster than Intel. 32Mb reading - 29Mb writing.

    Edit, no valid link 2017

The easiest way to make this is to have somewhat like this I/O INTERCONNECT , but as far as I now the don't sell it to endusers.

Guys, I got another question. I have my laptop connected to a monitor via vga. I also have it connected to a receiver using a hdmi cable. I have the settings to display on the monitor only. The laptop screen is black, but still on (backlight). This is kind of annoying when the room is dark. Is there a way to completely turn off the laptop screen?

Hi, I think it will work properly... but, why don't you put an SSD instead of that? I know that it is very expensive and don't have 1TB... but I have bougth a Toshiba Q-Series SSD 128GB (90€) last week and I think it's one of the best thing that I have bougth. It's like if you buy a new laptop. The difference in speed is incredible. And you can put your 320GB HDD in the DVD bay (buying an adapter). It's not a solution for you? Maybe you need a very big HDD with 1TB (there is also SSD of 512GB, but they are at the moment very expensive).

Users with ssd. What are you using?

I was looking at the samsung 840 non-pro and sandisk extreme. The memory(tlc) on the 840 makes me worry about the life of the drive. The extreme is 9.5mm. Will that fit in our notebooks?

All you have to do is eject the tray before you switch off the notebook (so you have something to pull).
Remove the screw- it's accessible from the outside- one of the two closest to the DVD drive that hold the service hatch (sorry can't switch the notebook off and check that at the moment)

Then simply pull on a tray and you'll end up with a DVD drive in you hand. Install the new caddy in reverse order.

There's no need for disassembly here- just one screw.

    Hi there,

I'm glad to find that there is a over 520 pages thread for this laptop.
I have it since it was released here in Bulgaria and become my favourite laptop model...

The laptop is pretty strong and comfort..

I'm posting this to ask some questions about the laptop and the specs specially..
I have Acer Aspire 5740G-434G64Mn with some additional RAM 2x4GB that I bought months after I get it.

I want to do some upgrade to core i7 and more RAM but I don't know what can handle the chipset. I have found information that the CPU can be upgraded to this list CPU-Upgrade: Intel HM55 Express chipset processor support
And here in this thread I have read that can get 16GB of RAM which is perfect for me and for now.

What I'm affraid is the heat that produce the laptop with the current i5 processor arround 50*C and gets arround 60-65 depending what I'm doing...
I'm cleaning the cooler sistem every 2-3 months but even when is 50*C the keyboard is really hot and I want to do something for that...

    I bought some of https://www.dropbox.com/s/ovx7ytftsh6qyel/25573093_3_585x461_rev001.jpg
and I'm not sure if it can help and even fits under the cooler..

Have you ever tried to upgrade the cooling system and how...
I'm reading the thread from the beginning but 500 pages are too much for me.. :D

    Thank you!
And sorry for my bad English. :)

Just so you guys know, the 5740 I bought and reviewed oh so long ago is still running strong with it's new owner (my boss at work) it actually outlasted an msi x460dx I had purchased shortly afterwards....go figure. it was great to see all the work and mods you guys have been continuing makes me wish I still owned mine. Props to all involved and to downloads for starting this community :D

Mine idles around 45-60c and gets up to 85c playing games. I have the i5-520m and 5650m gpu. This is after cleaning it. Before cleaning cpu would hit over 100c playing games and gpu in the 90s. Gpu only gets up to 65c now, and it idles around 40c. This is using a cooler.

If you get that copper heatsink thing working, post some pictures. I might want to try it also.

your drive might have mechanical issues.....could be related to chip failure or maybe the spindle itself. You should at the very least try swapping in a new hard drive and se if that works for you.( better to do it and not lose any important data! Good Luck!

First of all I think your temps are normal, don't now what you mean with keyboard is really hot, mine is a bit warm.
When I change from i3-330 to i7-640 I put a stripe of alu (3 á 4mm thick) and a heatsink from p1 to the acer heatsink to be on the save side.

    IMG_0270.JPG

    IMG_0278.JPG

Never check the temp's before but result is the same as your's and every one else.
If you want to use copper, you must now that it's absorbs heat faster, but is lose heat not as quick as alu, so I think it's brings you nothing, unless a fan blows directly on it, please post results.
As for quadcore, I think temps are to handle, but fan will be on most of the time.

    2. Can you show to us your 3dmark06 mark score with your configuration ?

BTW. Anyone reach more than 10000 pts in 3dmark06 with overclocked gpu 5650 , core i5-640m , ssd hdd and 8GB memo ? :)

guys, it has been awhile since i replied to this thread...now i need help...here is my problem...

the 5740g recording with the internal microphone is not clear with a lot of background noise...i seem to remember that it was not this bad before, either with the acer webcam or ms sound recorder...that the voice was crystal clear then with no background noise...

i updated the driver...i tried boosting the mic sensitivity and speaker volume but the noise also increases...i made sure the mic hole is clear...

how does your recording with the internal mic sound?...any help is greatly appreciated...

    @yahyoh

It's a WD Green HDD and based on its load cycle count it needs replacing.
It's not necessarily the root of your problem but with over 13K of work on the clock and so many load/unload cycles it's probably closing in on mechanical failure.

I would replace it if I were you- if you don't intend to- please keep frequent backups.

It's definitely Western Digital - you can see if it from the model number on HDTune screenshot - that's why it's so dangerous. These were not the best drives and mechanical failure is likely.

So yeah- replace it- just saying ;)

When I decided to retire my HDD I replaced it with SSD. You might want to consider one- even 128GB one.
Another point is that new 5400rom HDDs are quite a bit faster compared to what you have and I had.

I used to have a HDD that averaged 63MB/s according to HDTune but today you get 78-84MB/s from 5400rpm and up to 96-97MB/s from a 7200rom drive.
    That's quite an upgrade.

I'm having a problem with my network card. It crashes - eg shows a yellow spot over darkened network reception bars whenever I download something from Steam! The Network settings become unavailable when I try and navigate to them and I have to reboot to get back any wireless functionality. Pretty weird. It doesn't happen with normal web browsing, just downloading something through Steam!

    Hi, It's

qualcomm atheros AR5B93 wireless network adapter driver version 10.0.0.251 23/05/2013

    Thanks.

When I go to the network centre in Windows 7 and click on a connection it says "The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the function" This is when I attempt to simply click on any of the network icons in the network sharing centre.

There is a slightly newer version of the driver although I'm not pleased with it either- 10.0.0.255.
Check if you have power-saving disabled for Wi-Fi card in Windows power profile advanced settings.

There were some issues like that in the past - it's somewhere in the thread. Unfortunately I don't remember how it was solved.

I'm gonna use my Samsung SSD830 in my next laptop. I will most likely go for a laptops similar to 5740G- good performance for a reasonable price so I doubt it will have SSD.
So I'll swap drives- HDD will go into 5740G which should become my backup machine and SSD830 will for on the new one.
