so umm what fix can you suggest .. .besides finding the perfect cooling pad? because the more i look at the problem the more and more it doesnt seem like a hardware issue... i wasnt that concerned about laptop temps prior to one day opening up hwmonitor and seeing what my actual temps were. I always figured that the laptop would shut off long before the point where it would take damage from heat...so should i continue using it as is for now until i can get my hands on a decent cooling pad?...does this option come with factors that may result in permanent damage to my lappy? should i continue to stress and worry about it? (theres no drop in performance while gaming at these temps btw...well none that are notcieble on my part, keyboard just gets a little uncomfortable)

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. It was 3AM and I was exhausted, but I assumed it was obvious that new driver versions usually have bug fixes, but at the same time could contain new bugs.
I was just trying to tell him that version 2.43 was a stable driver that had the PC Beep volume control, the microphone working like normal, and the Dolby Home Theater function. -
Follow these directions. -
There's no reason not to use your laptop extensively- you might wanna consider a cooling pad if you manage to find a good one but don't worry about that too much.
BTW either you've researched it extensively before buying or you are lucky but if it wasn't for a very good cooling system 5740 has you would be in trouble.
If/when you buy a cooling pad I'd appreciate if you could make a test of it and post some data and photos. -
edit, 2.43 realteak drivers -

hmm okay man thankz man you are like officially the god of the acer 5740g
and if i do manage to find a decent cooling pad ill be sure to share with this lovely hivemind of acer -goodness. -

Okay. I think I figured out what happened.
I installed Acer 5943G Realtek drivers (or some other Acer model Realtek drivers) that had that loud, cracking, popping sound when you started your laptop because someone mentioned it in this forum; however, it contained the PC Beep volume control. When I uninstalled it in Device Manager and deleted the drivers for it, the values were still in the registry. So, when I installed version 2.43, it still kept the PC Beep volume control function in the registry that is compatible with newer drivers.
However, here is the big catch, versions 2.44-2.49 will have that loud, cracking popping sound that could damage speakers and I have no idea how to get rid of the cracking sound if you already installed Acer 5943G Realtek drivers. However, if you revert back to version 2.43 it will not have that loud, cracking pop sound, but the microphone works like normal, PC Beep volume control is there, and the Dolby Home Theater is still there.
Sorry, for all the confusion. I thought uninstalling from Device Manager and deleting the drivers from there would completely remove the drivers, but apparently that did not remove the values from the registry.
I guess you guys will have to install Realtek 2.29 drivers if you want to disable the PC Beep. Sorry guys. I thought I found a final solution, but it's user error on my part. I will still keep version 2.43 because everything works perfectly for me and I am able to disable the PC Beep. -
I have tried several time to reinstall the 2.43 drivers but still no use. I would like to stick with the newest drivers. i.e. 2.49. -

ATI is working on a similar magnitude to optimus nvidia for switchable graphics, I hope this is our chance.
-
Guys these are my two tests. Are the sensor movement and cpu temps tests fine? My room temp. is 23 C and the max. clock speed I got was 2527.02 Mhz.
Plz give your views as I am totally noob in these stress temp and overclocking kind of things. -

It had been disabled by Acer because when 5740G was launched Intel had no working drivers to enable switching. As a rule of thumb you don't add untested features after the notebook had been launched so I can pretty much guarantee Acer is not gonna issue a new BIOS to enable switchable graphics.
Second thing is that BIOS mod for 5740G has been already requested in a modding thread here on Acer sub-forum and it turns out that the BIOS is too new to be opened in Phoenix BIOS editor that these guys have- so until they get hold of more recent version we cannot hope for a mod either.
Side note- nVidia optimus is not a great solution- it is convenient but switching between cards is based on drivers and the card that is unused still has to be powered. Intel's solution is less convenient because you have to manually switch between the cards but Intel's chipset can switch off a GPU entirely so it draws no power. In my opinion we would be better off with what we already have (but well...enabled) than with any optimus-like solutions.

Does somebody know what does "install intel control center" do if checked when installing the latest AHCI driver from Intel? Does it contain any usefull apps that monitor the hdd drive or so?
-
Can I join this thread?
Gateway NV5925u = AS5740G-6979
There are no hardware multiplexers in these laptops, so there's no way they can do switchable graphics without a partial redesign of the mainboard. -
Secondly the integrated GPU is in the CPU and is connected to the mobo like all CPUs are- no other connection was supposed to exist. Thirdly there's no other connection to the LCD screen- there's only one cable regardless of what card sends its signal via the cable.
The switching device is the chipset which has full access to PCI- Express bus and all hardware- it's the chipset that chooses what device should have access to the bus and can power down the other one.
The same thing happened to both Aspires 4740G, 5740G and apparently Gateway NV5925u- launched a bit too early for Intel to be actually ready with their own product.
You whole theory is wrong I'm afraid because there's really nothing missing and there's no additional hardware required- it's all bad timing. -
downloads thanks, we should expect to be able to edit the bios to have switchable graphics, I like the time I bought a 12-cell battery on ebay to extend autonomy.
Thanks & Regards. -
I presume you are willing to take a risk and test if it works if such modified BIOS becomes available? -
-
This monitor software is it usefull? -
maybe we should make a petition and send the result to acer to enable the switchable graphics option. I think its not much work for them - Acer Timeline series already has this feature and the same hardware configuration...

Install Realtek 2.43 drivers with the PC Beep volume control
REMOVED. NOT WORKING.

***REVERT BACK TO PREVIOUS DRIVERS***
If you want to revert back to Realtek 2.49 or previous drivers after trying this step-by-step process. Follow the steps below.
1. Uninstall Realtek drivers from the Control Panel & restart the computer.
2. Install Acer 5740G Realtek drivers & restart the computer.
3. Uninstall Realtek drivers from the Control Panel & restart the computer.
4. Install Realtek 2.49 or previous drivers & restart the computer.
(This is the only solution that I found that restores Realtek drivers back to its original state without the loud, cracking pop sound at Windows 7 startup for driver versions 2.44-2.49.)

Question: is the chipset driver on the acer drivers page really an driver update for windows or only inf update? Is it usefull on Windows 7 to install it?
Edit: nevermind, i found out it's only an inf driver update and not needed for a current OS like windows 7. Correct me if i'm wrong. -

I need someone brave enough to test this step-by-step process. This is to install Realtek 2.43 drivers with the PC Beep volume control.

yep, i made a clean install yesterday, with realtek 2.43! since yesterday im trying to find a solution for my mic, just doesnt work, sometimes seems fine, but most times doesnt work, on msn, skype! really weird...volume too low! and every mic volume is on max(boost/volume)
im gonna help you finding a solution tomorrow! ill try other versions -
I have a question about this laptop.
I currently have one with 6979 version.
Is there anyway I can turn off Hyper Threading?
I been looking through BIOS setting, can't find any..
also, is there a way I can OC the CPU?
-
I have a question?
If I do a fresh Windows 7 install on the system. In device manager drivers for only Broadcomm LAN Driver, Intel MEI and native Video drivers are missing.
If I only install the missing drivers, will my system be more stable as MS tested windows drivers gets installed for majority of devices. -
AFAIK you can disable 2 cores from Advanced options of Boot Tab in MSConfig utility, (I didn't try it myself though). -

Is there a way to remove the annoying beep in Windows 7, when I plug in or out the charger?
Sorry but I only saw a couple of pages, but 140 are a lot... -
I have two questions. I have Cerative Inspire 5.1 Analog speakers (with three pins, i.e rear, front and center). Is there a way by which I can use it in my 5740G laptop.
Second, can I use windows XP 32-bit in this laptop. I know the 32-bit can't use the whole 4gb ram but can it be made to use all that ram by using that PAE thingy? Does it work? -
I believe you will need an external soundcard. -
@aylafan: I don't mind the PC Beep.Which are the latest realtek drivers with all enhancements/options and normal working microphone?
