downloads did everything you told me and with 650 / 950 the gta iv benchmark with the settings auto configured and set to high all of them gave me 38.7% fps,and playing gta is a brand new experience.ths thing boosted the performance!what is the desires fps percentage we want to achieve?also in which temperature shoud i start worrying??

of course thanx again,it was stupidity of me to play half of the game without ocercklocking the gpu
    cheers

How much do you gain by overclocking depends on a game. Some games are more CPU dependent than others so OCing GPU won't help that much, others are limited by memory bandwidth so people who managed to OC their RAM up to 1100MHz will have better scores than you and me. There are also games that are limited by processing power of HD5650 and here you may even hope for linear increase in speed (i.e. 15% OC equals 15% fps increase- provided you don't hit another limit like VRAM bandwidth)
All in all it's impossible to give a simple answer to this question.
As for the GPU temperature- it's rather unlikely that you're gonna have problems with that but I'd say if you hit mid-80*C you are on the worm side of things (but still safe). I'd expect your GPU to be in mid-70*C which is cool and safe- is it?

Thanks for the wonderful review, i still don't know if i should buy this or no, so, i wanna use it for video/photo editing.. and gaming too, so i think in the specs is very good, but i just watched a review of this laptop and reviewer said that the display it's not that good in sun or outdoors, and the webcam and the mic isn't really good, so can you please make a video of your webcam testing it and the mic as well, and i have another question, is this laptop gonna last for more than 2 years if i care about it, i mean is easy to broke..

and thanks so much for this review :D

All glare displays look bad in the sun because everything reflects from them.
There are almost no notebooks available with matte displays. So whatever you decide to buy you will end up with a glare display that doesn't really work in direct sunlight.
Webcam is 640x480 optimized for low-light situations and as much as it isn’t a match for my Microsoft nx-6000 in terms of quality (partially because of the lower resolution) it looks really good in a dark room.
I can use it (and I'm clearly visible) in situations where my MS webcam wasn't able to produce anything but almost-black screen with some ghost moving around. The mic is fine- there were some complaints from other users about how low sound volume is but that was a driver issue.
The mic is placed near the keyboard (not on screen bezel) so if you type and talk to someone they may be a bit annoyed by the sound of typing.
I've had my notebook for 8 months now and it's like new- so I'd say 2 years shouldn't be a problem especially if you take care of it.

Keep the PowerPlay on- this way your card will do the same thing your CPU does- adjust the clocks automatically based on load you put on it.
This means when you write something in word it's at 100/150 but when you launch a game or a hardware accelerated video (that includes flash video in the browser) your card automatically uses higher clocks and reverts back to 100/150 when you're finished playing or watching a movie.

If it doesn't work, well it doesn't work, sorry alstrike.
Mine doesn't work above 670MHz either. It depends on a specific unit and you can't do anything about it unless you figure out a way to increase voltage from 1.0V to 1.1V that HD5730 uses- that would allow for another 100MHz or so.

I'm not an expert on this but since the VBIOS is a part of the general BIOS package (since it's not MXM card) recovery should be easy if something goes wrong.
The Crisis disk that's linked here somewhere would re-flash system BIOS and VBIOS at once- the only downside is you'd have to do it blind but it's not like you have to see anything more than a keyboard to do this.

I have one question regarding the screen.

In case it breaks I know I can get a replacement quite easy but, is it possible to replace with another brand or model or even go the IPS or PVA route?

well the clocks are set to 650 and 950,and the tempereature gets at mid 70.sometimes i have even seen 78 but most of the times it's into 73 to 76.safe enough huh?
when running a game with defaults clocks though, temperature is way down.
i would like to raise some more the clocks.how will i understand that my pc cant take the clocks any higher??

You will start having artifacts or your display driver will crash(display will freze for few sec) and restart itsellf when you run a demanding game.

I know from experience now that the OC of the GPU depends exclusively from the motherboard. I don't know why, but I can show you. When i bought mine 5740g it had an issue with the keyboard. When I press for example 5 on the screen appeared 75, when I press 6=86, r=yr, t=yt and so on. The problem didn't existed when I tried with a usb keyboard. I went to the service so they could replace my keyboard. So far so good, but when they change it with the new one the problem persisted. And they said that the problem is the motherboard witch is odd for me because not all buttons were screwed.
With the old MB I was able to reach an OC of 700/1200 with some artifacts, but with frequencies like 690/1140 or even 50 there were none artifacts and card run smoothly.
    Click
    Click
With the new MB everything beyond 700/1000 causes the video driver to crash
    Click

Thanks. I updated the links in the update post.

Yeah. I might go for the registry tweak that I saw somewhere to enable it.

It's not the motherboard- it's the GPU itself. With the GPU being embedded in the mobo you got a new GPU and you were less lucky this time.

In majority laptops it's embedded in the motherboard in minority it's in MXM slot that allows it to be changed. Acer used to use MXM quite extensively compared to other manufacturers but gave up on it recently. It's cheaper not to use it and it allows manufacturer to make a notebook slimmer.
Aspire 5740G has no MXM slot so with a new mobo you got a new GPU.

As an example- on Core i5 430M the lowest CPU state is around 1300MHz while the full speed is 2260MHz so one must use max 60% to keep it @1300MHz- you can't get any lower anyway. It works fine for me.

It's cheaper and probably cooler but you are right. That said 128bit DDR3 have reached their limit- you can’t make a card any faster using these so 128bit GDDR5 is going to be next step.

do you mean that by setting 60% the cpu never goes beyond 1,3 Ghz (10x) ?
that could by a fair compromise.

If you choose the first one you're going to download a utility that will download the very same driver that I linked to in the second post of the thread (some 76MB) The second one seems to add Accelerated Parallel Processing which would be useful if we had apps running on it- hopefully we will.
So it looks like either one of them is fine.

Yes- that's what I meant. You can go down to x9 multiplier but I didn't bother with big math and calculating percent to type in Windows to make it work ;)

I didn't test it yet but now that you mention it I feel compelled to do so.
The idea is pretty simple and very useful especially for mid-range cards like HD5650- we can't spare more than a few fps after all.
I don't want to use fully moded 10.11s (if such already exist) all I want is to enable MLAA within official Mobile Cats 10.11- I'll see what I can do and post back.

    Well good news :)
I've managed to mod the inf file so we get fully working MLAA.
In order to have it enabled in Catalyst 10.11 please download the attached file place it in C:\ATI\Support\10-11_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF (overwriting the file that's already there) and run ATI installer again.
It should warn you at some point that the driver is not signed- that's because of modifications I made.
I can confirm it works- I tested it on Fallout 3 in Megaton. If you played F3 you know how Megaton looks like- MLAA is clearly visible. I've set it to x8 in game settings to make sure it's visible. I'm yet to see how this effects performance.
Word of warning: This modded inf will work on DX11 HD5xxx but won't work on anything below it so anyone with non-DX11 card (even seemingly from HD5xxx series like HD5165)- please do not use it!

File attachment [Removed for the time being- MLAA option was present and selectable but didn't work. Normal AA worked instead of MLAA.]

I didn't change anything in the CCC folder- just the settings concerning driver file and mine starts all right so it shouldn't be related to the mod itself. More likely something went wrong during the installation.
You may want to uninstall it, reboot and install again.

hmmm, weird enough. I have option in catalyst center to enable mlaa, but i don't see any improvements in games, tried Battlefield BC2, Bioshock and Two worlds 2. I also disabled the driver enforcement, but still no visual improvements with mlaa on or off in these games.
Also tried Just Cause 2 and DDO, nothing :( I used that config which is above to install ati catalyst 10.11 on my acer 5740g ...

It's because it doesn't work untill you set it in game. You probably have both option checked- MLAA and let application decide which means you get MLAA as AA but only if you had set AA to be on un game settings.
Go to BFBC2 settings and set AA to a level you prefer and keep MLAA and "let application decide" checked. Since MLAA doesn't steal to many FPS choose a higl level like x8 to be sure you'll spot the difference.

Nope. It's not your fault. I'm working on it at the moment too and I have the same results. It appears that whether the MLAA is checked or not has no impact on performance which means the GPU is still using normal AA rather than MLAA. It may mean my tweaking is not enough or it may mean that ATI had their reason for not showing this option in drivers as it apparently doesn't work.
I'm gonna do some testing and see what can be done about this.

I´m trying to decide between 620m and 640m, the price difference I think is around 30€ so I guess I´ll get the 640m unless I find some really cheap 620m.

Can you run some benchmarks with the 620m?

Status report on MLAA, well kind of... ;)

After some "exciting" time spent comparing inf files of different driver versions looking for what's missing from my modded 10.11 I've decided that playing Fallout 3 with normal AA is far more exciting than this.
I guess someone will do this anyway while I'll be exploring Wasteland, sorry :D
