ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors) source: Acer Aspire 5740G-6979 - Notebookcheck.net External Reviews

What do you think of that? Seems hd 5650 support 6 monitors. Very interesting would 2 external monitors work at same time plugged in vga and hdmi.

2 external monitors works fine with dell using vga and hdmi one thing I like about my Dell XPS M1330: dual external monitors! ? Geek Factor

I took the second one...works great! I noticed they added a color temperatur Control option...that's very helpful for my Display since the color was very cold by default.

i dont think this is related to the driver version.... why 2.49 should be better than the current....

    A few updates:
New Atheros Driver from Station Drivers
New Synaptics TP Driver from HP
And do not use the Intel Chipset Driver from Intel they are meant for Desktop hence do not optimize power savings as well.

Are you using quietHDD? It seems like a lot of Western Digital hard drives are having freezing problems.

quietHDD solves the freezing problem. Download it here. quietHDD

where is the dl-link to synaptics from hp? and which driver version?

i dont think intel chipset driver have such a enormous effect on battery life...

Here is the HP Synaptics Link
    Anyway I tested it does.
Using the Intel Chipset Driver I monitor the temperature and the CPU state (Using HWMonitor) it is significantly higher than using Laptop chipset Driver.
You can reproduce the result just download and install both separately and test with a reboot after each installation.
The new Atheros Driver allows the setting of 5GHZ and 2.4 GHZ bandwidth

    @weinter

Thanks for the heads up on the drivers- I added the most recent Atheros one to the update post.

As for the Synaptics driver- it's weird. You liked to 15.1.6.64 (driver date 09/30/2010) whereas I'm using 15.1.9.0 (driver date 08/19/2010).
My driver has a higher version number but driver date is older- no idea why but I omitted that one in the update post.

Hey guys, do u know how to turn hyper thread off?

On a side note ive heard the problem might be cpu throttling, which im not sure but i think is some kind of power saving thingy for laptops? Most of the time the battery is out of the laptop though, dont know if that has anything to do with it.

To turn HyperThreading off you need to have access to a hidden "Intel" tab in BIOS- sustmi explained how to get there here.

Throttling is not an issue for 5740G so no need to worry about it (and it has nothing to do with battery)

I took the Acer Aspire TimelineX/Acer TravelMate TimelineX Driver from Acer HomePage because
1)It uses the same HM55 Chipset
2)It is the most powersaving Acer Laptop Model with high performance.
If you want to do the test it has to include laptop on AC Power because that will display the difference in power optimization and thermal output.

well... to tell the true drivers for 5810 are just the same (ver 9.1.1.1024) as the ones for 5741.
still have to check differences with "standard" intel package, though.

    Hi,

Is there anyone who has a Acer Aspire 5740G-333G32Mn, with an i3-330M and later upgraded to an i5-540M?
I wonder if this can work with the latest bios, before I take apart the entire notebook ;-)

    Thanks in advance.

It will work but not without a problem. You should expect the same problem Rhadamanthis has.
The reason is your CPU has been released two months after the last BIOS update.

You have to swap HDD for SSD and you can try to place the HDD in a caddy in place of the DVD reader. I think someone brought that up- alstrike was that you?

    Yes it was me.

The caddy will not work. I tried 2 different models from different vendors and it won´t boot, it won´t even get to the BIOS screen. It just freezes.

I have the OS and 2-3 games at the time on the SSD and the 640 HDD it´s placed in an external enclosure. The problem is that with today´s standards you can´t have more than 2-3 games installed on a 60GB SSD at the same time.

The real space is about 55GB.
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 takes about 14GB
    Drivers and such
Games: F1 2010 can take up to 11GB I think, and Mass Effect 2 will go to 16GB.

Anyway I´m thinking about selling the laptop and investing in something more durable and better quality wise, or go desktop altogether.

Got 5740g today, it looks great.

Only one thing , this 16:9 format is quite strange, did you got used to it?

And does the win7 license allow to remove this acer version of win7 and install normal version of win7 without acer stuff and with ability to freely divide disc into partitions?

I got used to 16:9 pretty fast although I remember in the beginning I though the laptop looks like an elephant sat on it :D
You can install Win 7 from a retail DVD and use your current product key but it's possible that you may have to activate via phone (supposedly OEM licenses are blocked from online activation)

GPU idle around 50*C while gaming OCed to 670/900 depending on a game between 63*C and 71*C (with an exception of GTA IV that got it up to 76*C)
    Room temperature is 21-22*C

hello everybody! i am using my 5740G 434G50Mn for 5 months now. it's the one with i5 430m, 4GB, 500GB, and radeon 5470 512MB, no bluetooth. in time i used win 7 hp, windows xp, ubuntu, and now i am using it with win 7 ultimate x64. i did not have any problems with the laptop so far, it works great. i was wondering, did samsung eventually produced(and sell) the mini pci-e ssd (with sata controller on it)? i read about it on this thread, but i did not found a website where i can buy the thing, i only found info about it. thank you for in advance and please forgive my english :p

Is it possible to get an SSD drive and install it without removing anything?I see there are PCIe SSD's.Can we use one of those without removing the DVD reader?I just want a small 40GB SSD for the OS and use the WD for everything else without removing anything :(.

OCZ made mini-PCIe SSD drives that would work but these are EOL now.
There have to be some available from OCZ or other manufacturers but I'm not sure if the noteboook would boot from SSD connected to mini-PCIe.
Another thing- on the system schematic both mini-PCI-e connectors are labeled "PCI-E+USB 2.0" which may mean these are just in mini PCI-e factor but in fact running on an USB bus (gigabit LAN is labeled properly as PCI-E)
It would make sense because these mini-PCIe ports are meant for either WLAN or 3G connection none of which would exceed ~30MB/s

Hi guys, I haven't come here for quite a long time. It's nice to see that the thread is still up and running, thanks to downloads of course!-Really great many thanks for the job you are doing, saving the lifes of all 5740G-users :)
Anyway, I come here to ask: What are the best current Ati Drivers out there? Cause I've read some nasty things about the 10.10 and the 10.8 . I am currently with 10.5 or 10.6-haven't updated them in quite some time as you can see. Now I even realized that there were 10.11 ati drivers. So once again, which drivers should I download and use-from your experience, which ones where the ones that optimized the work of the Card and caused least problems when installed?
Thank you in advance for the help. Still, thumbs up for the thread!

Cats 10.10 did cause some problems for many users- different problems on different notebooks- some of us had a problem with them too (16bit-like colors after hibernation). For that reason I've skipped them and went straight to 10.11 which are pretty good (but still lacking MLAA)
I think you may want to try 10.11s- unless others have problems with them- anyone willing to discourage Puhpuhan4o?

Can you verify that it's actually MLAA not normal AA- I know there's a checkbox for it but it doesn't mean anything.
Can you run 3DMark06 with AAx4 (MLAA check unchecked) and another one with x4 and MLAA checked?

    Hello everyone,

    I have Acer Aspire 5740G 434G50MN ( 4GB ram, 500GB hd, Ati5650... )

I want to upgrade my laptop's ram. Current ram size is 4GB, and I know that I can upgrade this laptop to max 8GB.

I removed back panel today, and also I removed hd- but there is no ram slot under it. Also, I removed front panel( keyboard ) there is no ram slot there too..

So guys, please help me; Where are 2 empty ram slots ???
How can I upgrade the ram size of this machine ?

Thank you very much for your any inputs =) !
    Best Regards,
    Gollum

It's because this machine only has 2 memory slots...to upgrade to 8GB, you have to replace the installed 2 & 2GB ram with 4 & 4GB ram sticks.
