Maybe you should try eRecovery first. That's what they're going to do at service center anyway. Vents are not likely to cause BSODs- and don't count on service center staff to test it thoroughly un games. If it can run a 3DMark06 or whatever they use to test it- it's fine.

Hey all i have the 5740G with i3 + 5650. Ive been reading this forum topic and let me say it has been a world of help - i originally was having the pink dots problem when watching HD videos in full screen and after updating Bios - no more issues.

I also managed to OC my 5650 upto 650/860 and the funny thing is my 5650 is default on 1v. I have been reading they all default on 0.9. ATI driver 10.11.

This is prob why my card runs a little hotter but does this also mean i can clock a little higher? The card idles around 66 degrees and full load around 86-87.

What is the best stress test for a GPU? I have 3dmark 06 and ATI tool but im not sure if they are only benchmarking rather than stress test.
The good thing is from default clocks to these there was a 1100 increase in 3dmark points.

Thanks guys, especially downloads - your posts have been most helpful!

Just ran FurMark for 10 mins on clocks of 650/910/1.0V and max temp is 90.

Im not sure if this is ok for an extended period of time

It's a bit hot. I got 71*C running at 670/900. It's not dangerous yet but you might want to consider either lowering the freqs or buying a cooling pad.
As for the voltage only underclocked cards used in Toshiba, Sony and HP that have the core freq of 450MHz use 0.9 volts.
The rest of HD5650s that are 550MHz are 1.0 volts and only the HD5730s use 1.1V

Hm since you guys are all talking about 5650 GPU, I'm wondering about something.

On notebookcheck.net, it seems to say that ATi's 5650 power consumption is only 15-19 watts; on the other hand, Nvidia's GT 420/25/35Ms all eat 35 watts while running in games. Both sides have the same 40nm tech, and ~same graphics power (maybe something like 420<425<5650<435, but no more than 15% difference), why such a giant gap in power consumption?

There are two possibilities- one that the methodology is different i.e. ATI gives you TDP of a graphics chip while nVidia adds graphics chip and memory chips.
Second possibility is architecture- desktop cards of similar performance from ATI and nVidia using the same manufacturing process can have drastically different TDP and Fermi was the one to consume significantly more power than ATI. It may be both at the same time too off course.

    I see, very insightful thanks.

So if case I is not true, then one can assume that all in all nvidia chips are inferior to ATIs in the same power class? I mean, they're at the same 40nm tech, and have same graphics output power, but one needs to chug double the watts of the other's.

Hi, I've had the 5740G-434G50Mn since March and love it. Recently I've noticed the keyboard is getting quite hot, so hot that its uncomfortable to use and I sometimes have to take my hands off it. It doesn't seem to be the whole keyboard, mainly the area around the WASD keys and the touch-pad. The right hand side around the number-pad is quite cool. The GPU and CPU don't appear to be overheating, around 70C max for the GPU. I use an aluminium Zalman cooler-pad whenever I'm gaming. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Thanks

    greets all,
question: i've installed ubuntu 10.04 but i can's seem to make my wireless to work. Anyone else with ubuntu installment has same problems ? My thinking is that since i can;t get wireless button to work (enable wireless) ubuntu can't see the card at all, nowhere to be found at lshw. Is that correct that our lappy's wireless is using atheros chip?

    It does in mine too.

The performance is really sluggish for some really playskool graphics game. I have to turn details to medium to run it smoothly.

    Maybe a patch will do.

If I were in their shoes I would both clean the vents and re-apply the thermal compound- may be they did too.
Anyway glad to see your problem solved.

as far as i remember my wireless button used to work with 10.4, anyway i guess u won't be using your 5740g as server and if u just installed it it's not big deal to do it again, so throw away 10.4, take 10.10, which works great despite of some warning messages during boot. with new kernel ever hibernation works. good luck

1st of all.. r u Greek? :) Back to the subject, i installed 10.10 after your advise , thou i couldn't find a wubi for 10.10 so i just used the one in the iso of 10.10 i downloaded ... After that i could see my wireless adapter (which is broadcom with BCM43225 chipset) but again couldn't get it to work. Then i just plugged in my ethernet and installed Broadcom STAdrivers from system>administration> Hardware Drivers! .. now works like a charm... Too bad i actually had to use the internet to make the internet work but WTH.

Hi all. I was wondering all laptops from Aspire 5740G series have this problem with the HDDs ? I bought an Aspire 5740G-434G64MN before 2-3 weeks but i'll have it after 10 days. I also want to ask did someone open it to clean the cooling, because i think is not very easy...???

    @ alstrike
I'm gonna stock with 5740G for at least another year. ATI 6xxx series is a useless re-badge- not even worth the trouble for me. Astonishing 50Mhz overclock and possibility of GDDR5 which Acer won't use (I'm pretty sure of that- they chose to spoil HD5850 by using DDR3 so they won't hesitate to stick with a cheaper card. Besides remember that 5740G was supposed to use HD5750 (meaning 5650 core +GDDR5 memory). I'd like to be wrong on this one though.
I expect ATI is working on a real deal that will be launched more or less in a year and this is when HD5650 will be running out of juice with newer games too.

    It's a perfect plan so I'm sure it's gonna fail miserably :D

Only those with Western Digital drives- it's not related to Acer or 5740G in any way. It's Western Digital that's to blame and it does happen in all notebooks with this series of WD drives.
Cleaning the cooling system is not easy indeed- that's why it's better to use canned air every couple of weeks and not let the dust settle between the leafs of the radiator.

You don't need a service manual to change HDD. When you look at the bottom of the notebook you see two service hatches- only one is big enough for HDD to fit. You open it- unscrew 4 screws that hold the HDD bracket and pull the HDD out of its socket- there's only one direction it can go.
You end up with a HDD in a bracket. Unscrew all the screws, put new HDD in the bracket and do everything in reverse.

First of all clean the vents using canned and make sure the reading is correct (cross-check using other software).
If it doesn't help you can consider opening the laptop and reapplying thermal compound (and properly cleaning the vents) or sending it to Acer to do the same thing.

I just used my mod powers ;) to see your IP and that bring another question- what's your ambient temperature? It may not be notebook-related.
As for the cooling pad- X2P made a great thread on it in aftermarket accessories I think. I'm in a hurry so you'll have to find it on your own.

I've used Arctic Silver to good effect- not that it's the only good thermal compound but it's reasonably priced, easy to apply and widely available where I live. You can always read few comparison reviews on thermal compounds if you need more info.

here is my call of pripyat benchmark result, i dont know why these framerates are so cosmic, it may be an error or something :D i am running 10.10e drivers, 5650 overclocked 670 gpu 975 mem.

this benchmark is quite inaccurate imo because it is so smooth, compared to stalker: clear sky gameplay.
I launched it today and got about 8-20fps at full enhanced lighting directx 10, preset maximum only ssao off. i am quite dissapointed with that because ive seen youtube movies with call of pripyat with about 20-30fps like here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQech7wcsZc

Something went very wrong with this benchmark indeed :D

Don't compare Clear Sky to Call of Prypiat- it's the same engine but this series of games had some real optimization trouble earlier on. It's still not that good to be frank- it should look better for that framerate or is should have higher framerate for that looks.

the newer 5745 model which has the same core i5 430m which my friend has didn't cross 80 degrees using prime95 but mine reaching 90 degrees

i just want to ask if in any case my cpu reaches 100 degrees (which hasn't had happend yet) will it damage anything ? coz i think the safety temp is 105 degrees so cpu can handle till that ..

also plz suggest the cooling pads for this laptop :)

I won't damage anything because CPU will throttle however you don't want that to happen. Did you consider putting new high quality thermal compound on the CPU?

Lithium-ion batteries should never reach 0% charge (the OS should stop this), it's likely your battery is now toast.

If you have not changed your OS power profiles I would contact Acer/retailer and tell them it's killed your battery.

It's not the OS but the BIOS that protects the battery however there was a bug in BIOS for Aspire 5740 and versions prior to 1.16 had too low critical and warning levels that they reported to OS.
So if you had not updated your BIOS to 1.16 or 1.22 and your notebook came with anything other than 1.16 or 1.22 than Meaker is right.

    hello again!!

a friend of mine told me,that if i don't run the computer on battery i should have it detached, in order to prolongue the battery life. till now i always had it connected to the laptop.what is your opinion to this issue?

cheers to the best 5740 community!!
till now,all the problems i had, were solved here

The best way is to store a battery is removed from a notebook charged to 50-60% and... in the refrigerator. That's the best case scenario to make it lose capacity as slowly as possible. The point is your battery is going to lose capacity regardless but a bit faster if in the notebook.
In the end it's up to you- I have mine always in the computer.

I don't see a point in going through these paces to make a non-notebook from a notebook just to prolong the life of battery (that you apparently don't need anyway if you can remove it) that costs around $45.

yes i dont need the battery now,but i travel a lot, so the longer battery life is,the less bored i feel when in bus or train or whatever. :p
but in the other hand,if the battery is attached and electricity goes down,(and i live in a building in which electricity is not stable (hope you understand what i mean) with battery on there will be no problem.

anyway, think i am gonna have it attached all the time, and if it comes to an end,who cares?it costs only 45 $, almost 30 euros.
    anyway,cheers for response

I know what you mean- my neighbors redecorated their place recently and with all those wires and power tools something was bound to go wrong- at least I didn't lose my work when the power went down.

I wouldn't keep my hopes up but it may be a worthwhile update.

New Realtek R2.55 audio driver is out.
There's also new ATI HDMI Audio Device there worth checking out.

If you select vista 64 as your os (I assume your using 7 64bit) then go to apps, use the app launch software in there.
