    i've an i5/430, with Ati 5470.
WEI scores are referred to VGA only (before and after); other scores are just the same as yours.

Thx for the reply, wow you sure about this? thats great if i can upgrade my cpu, dont get me wrong im pleased with my current CPU but im thinking of an upgrade in near future, also wont changeing the cpu result in heat problems as a core i7 has diferent arhitecture 45 nm then the core i3 35 nm? do all 5740G use same cooling? and would upgradeing my GPU be posible as well?

Yes I am- you can upgrade. It's actually the same architecture- Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 (2 core ones) are built in 32nm manufacturing process and dissipate 35W.
You can’t use Core i7 720QM and any other 4 core i7 CPUs because there are built in 45nm and dissipate 45W.

So you can upgrade to any Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7s that are 35W (like 620M) without any changes.
You have to keep in mind that if your CPU has not been available in 5740G it may not be recognized by BIOS- so you'll have to either choose one that is recognized or ask kizwan to update BIOS with new microcode.

Link is invalid but apart from that it's for TravelMate 5740 not Aspire 5740.
I couldn't find service manual for 5740G on that website.

The " TM" at the beginning applies to all models in the title which is TravelMate. TravelMate 5740G & Aspire 5740G doesn't use similar motherboard since both have different BIOS.

Hey people i just upgraded my bios to ver. 1.28 well nothing really changed in the bios menu but i noticed some improvement in graphical performance like 5 fps increase in games, i have a Ati HD 5470 512mb and since this graphic card has a rather poor performance i recommend upgradeing the bios to get the best out of it.

I dont think its overheating, its not hot on the bottom.
I get these blocks randomly and my driver is updated. So i have no idea why my laptop is acting this way.

An app running on a single thread will report only 25% usage but that's only because windows sees the virtual cores and the real cores as equals. It doesn't mean that the computer is only using 25% of the overall power (as technically, the virtual cores != real cores.) It just means that Windows sees 1 core out the possible "4" cores being utilized at 100% and 1/4th of 100% is 25%. Being a computer and not knowing how much "real" power is being used, it just uses simple math to "calculate" the CPU load.

That being said, Spybot has historically been bad at handing HT. What happens when you set the affinity of Spybot to one CPU only? Back in the days of the P4's horrid hyperthreading, that would help out.

On a side note: I think I get more of a gain when compiling because of the IO being tied up freeing up the CPU to work on other threads than I do because of hyperthreading, but even then, it does help a bit. I'm just glad they didn't keep hyperthreading as it was on the P4. :p I can't wait to see AMD's "implementation" of it, though. They went into a middle ground. Kind of between multiple physical cores and hyperthreading.

    i change my core i5 430m for core i7 620m (ebay)
good, at the end after a thousand tests use msdos with bios 1.28, and for my surprise was great when I pass a dir to the bios and find that this bios version is classified as alpha, this bios is not even compatible with my laptop model, ... amazing!. Another mystery why takes 4 megs?

    @ ivanmmj

That makes sense. I thought about that but I figured the only way to know for sure is to run same tasks with and without HT and compare the performance.

That will have to wait though- I don't have the time to brick/unbrick my computer right now ;)

ivanmmj is right i thought at first too that disabeling HT will use bouth cores at theyr full capacity so i did that and suprisingly i got the same performance ( maybe even less), the only thing that changed is that the task manager shows now 100% CPU usage instead of the 50-60%.

You had any compatibility issues upgradeing your core i5? did your bios support the new installed core i7 or did you have to modify it? Note that the bios 1.28 is for Aspire 5740G dont know if it works for other models and you need to use a bootable flash drive to flash the bios doing this directly from windows environment wont work (at least it didn't work for me).

I have the acer 5740g. trying to update bios to 1.28 from windows I get an error, because not compatible with all models of motherboards.
the processor core i7 620m is supported natively by this acer (in Spain are sold with this configuration)

I'm pretty sure the 5740G never had a brightness screen display. I owned two 5740G laptops and a TimelineX 4820TG. I have only seen the volume screen display on all 3 laptops with Launch Manager preinstalled.

If someone really did have a brightness screen display on the 5740G, we would've seen a screenshot a long time ago.

I think it's not really possible.
All OSD icons are stored in C:\Program Files (x86)\Launch Manager\OSDRC folder.
I don't see anything brightness related there.

Does someone still have the brightness screen display? Can someone take a photo or make a short video on YouTube?

There has been several discussions about this, but the only ones discussing this are the ones who claim they had it in the beginning. I've never seen it on all 3 of my Acer laptops and I never did a clean install of Windows 7 on any of the laptops either. If you can prove it then I'll admit I was wrong.

Since I'm not much into sounds systems things. I know that by default it's not possible, somewhere read that some converters(extras wires) is needed. And if it's possible to connect, can someone link what stuff i'd need to buy

^ NO...Its not possible. I have already banged my head into this before because even I have Inspire 5200 5.1. The only solutions are:
    1. To use an external usb 5.1/7.1 soundcard, and
    2. To use an external dts/dolby decoder with the spdif option. The decoder will split the 5.1 digital stream from the SPDIF jack into separate 6 channels. You can then attach your analog speakers to the decoder.

^ you can use this product with T6100 but the driver support for Windows 7 isn't that good. Secondly, this product is discontinued by Creative, so no more further support.
You can connect your speaker's Black & Orange jack easily to this sound card. For the green one you'll need something like this:
HOSA YMR-197 3.5mm TRS (F) to Dual RCA (search in goole)

11.2 didn't like my current preferred Kubuntu setup. I had to roll back to 11.1 for now until I finish writing my paper and can mess with it. I haven't installed in Windows, yet. I will later today. It looks like you all are having pretty good luck with it so far.

    Most likely codecs.
Apart from that I don't have any quality issues although for obvious reasons i use 720p whenever possible.

I just installed Catalyst 11.2, using Driver Sweeper to wipe all the old data out too... And it seems that the gradient blocking bug that was on older Catalyst versions has come back to haunt me! :( Is this happening to anyone else or just me? I'm using a 5470 just so you know.

I install the new 11.2 driver on the old 11.1 (without uninstall) and everything is fine.
