In my opinion the best way is to use the computer at constant low load until the battery discharges completely.
It's not recommended to do that often- I do that once every two/three months.
It's not something that changes in a rapid manner so you don't have to be up to date with it every day.
I also recommend using constant and preferably low load- if the load is low and then suddenly it jumps up for a while you may end up with a wrong wear level value.
This is no problem for most batteries as they recalibrate both ways- sometimes wear level is decreased if the battery chip monitoring the whole thing "sees" that some of the capacity is not actually lost.
Unfortunately some batteries calibrate only one way- namely Sony ones.
My wear level is 17% but my laptop works some 10 minutes at 0% and current capacity value is not changing.
It should recalibrate the other way but it won’t

I get a weird noise when i plug in my headphones. On my brothers laptop there is no noise. The noise changes when games load, colors on the screen change, the HDD is under load and such stuff.Really weird. It's low and i don't hear it when there are sounds playing, but is rather annoying when im not listening to anything. Any idea what is causing it?

yeah..thats random static due to coil whining (capacitors). Can happen with any laptop. Even I have it sometimes when I scroll my browser window using mouse.

From my experience GTA IV is the best test of stability. I don't remember how hot the GPU got but definitely more than 71*C I had managed in FurMark.
It think it was 76*C in GTA.
Clean the vents, consider raising the back of the laptop slightly to improve airflow.

With gas duster aka canned air.
You should have been doing it on regular basis. It's important to clean the dust before a lot of it becomes jammed in the radiator- it's much harder to clean it then.

ok i googled and figured what the gas duster is.
soo i should buy one of these and blow in the holes that are on the down side and at the one that is at the back side of the lap top? is this that simple?
sorry for being so annoying but i have no idea

Yeah, that would be enough. Just do it every month rather than wait until the notebook starts to overheat.

Make sure you do not hold the can upside down while you're using it. Also use it in short bursts. This is to prevent the air from coming out too cold and damaging the equipment.

    @downloads and ivanmmj
thanx for the advices to both of you!
i lifted the back of the laptop a while to help the air flow and then i got max gpu temp 80, and max cpu cores temp 84. on normal load, max temps for cpu and gpu is 53, which is kind of normal i suppose. tomorrow i'll buy the canned air and give it a shot. the laptop in the back is not that dirty though, but i'll be doing this once a month.
anyway cheers to both of you

i still have problem with movies in my acer. when i open sample movie (~700mb xvid) in windows media player, quality is very bad. objects are blur but i have pixels. When i open in other video player is better. When i go to CCC and turn off some options in videos section video quality is better. but when i checkd default ->still horrible.
I test the same movie in sony vaio with the same spec. (card, proc etc.) is the same bad quality in windows media player. in pc (old p4) i have gerat quality.

what settings i must change in CCC? can somebody record sample movie in this acer?

when i open 720p and 1080p quality is super

It may depend on a codec and its settings rather than on hardware.

I've noticed with the latest ATI drivers 11.2 ...that when you disable the CCC from the msconfig startup list (to not automatically load on system start)...that it loads the default settings (at least for the video settings)...and they make my videos look bad. Once I start the CCC, everything is OK...even after I close the center and end the processes for ccc and MOM, the settings stay the way I put them (so apparently they are not really needed!). I don't want to have the extra memory taken away from my system and not use the CCC that often. I hope they fix that in the next driver version.
Anybody else noticed that? Or am I the only one who is disabling the control center from the startup list?

well, mine uses about 5.6MB plus 2.5 for the MOM.exe...makes more than 8MB...I have more than 1GB memory in use when I start windows new and don't use anything...that's way too much in my opinion. So I try to get rid of everything I know I don't need it. Though I'm sure this machine can handle all that stuff that's loading.....i prefer to have as much memory as possible available when i need it.

I also just made some 3dmark11 tests with the ccc loaded and closed...I get 2 points more without the ccc loaded...another reason for me not to have it.

    4. ntoskrnl.exe(5)
and a few times by hall.dll

Try removing 1 stick of RAM.
    Could be memory related errors.

Check the Intel 5 series (...) USB Enhanced Controller host (or whatever it's called) in device manager under USB devices.

You might want to make sure that you are using the most recent Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology (official one- not a beta)

I am not so sure about factory images (or imaging as a whole) they tend to be unreliable which can lead to corruption.
The best way to troubleshoot is actually a clean install just as in a experiment you observe the difference while holding all other variables constant.

mayby not. i use only good codecs-ffdshow. i test it on many computers and never it works bad.
just i say-only in windows media player with default setting in video section in catalyst center. can you test it? click defaults on video preferences in CCC and open sample movie in wmp. the quality is very poor. but when open in other player (mpc, vlc etc. is better). I change some settings in CCC and going better. many sliders is checked and values is 50, 30 etc.... i turn off t and....video is good. somebody can test it?

Quality is equally good in WMP and in Media Player Classic (of course to the extent to which anything below HD video can be described as good quality).
I don't use the CCC (deleted it from startup) but when I manually launch it there's no difference in quality (with default video settings in CCC).

Checked at xvid file. Video decoder used by WMP was libavcodec.

Yesterday my laptop BSoD'd while it was idling returning a "driver_irql_not_less_or_equal" error. It would restart, but would again crash with the same error usually within a few seconds of getting to the login screen. I booted the computer off a Ubuntu USB to diagnose the hard drive and it seemed fine. Since Ubuntu ran just fine I assumed it was a problem with Windows and decided to try reformatting.

Unfortunately I had the same crash between the time it finished installing Windows and the screen that would have set up user name/date/etc. If I try booting it will tell me that installation was interrupted and I should begin it again. The problem is that I can't seem to find the recovery partition anymore. Sadly I never made recovery DVDs wrongly believing I'd always have the partition.

I ordered the laptop March 1st, 2010 and received it April 1st, 2010 so I'm assuming if I'm quick about it that it would still be covered by the warranty. Before I try contacting Acer is there anything someone could tell me about my problem?

    @ garfieldncheese
I used to have the same problem while running crysis (64-bit.exe). The bsod was something about ATI. But the problem vanished while using crysis (32-bit).
If other games runs fine then I think its related more to the game's incompatibility rather than any driver or hardware.

    @ subrotobasu
thanks for sharing mate. ive noticed something about the bsod. when i disable the realtek driver in device manager and only use the high def audio device, games crash within 5 mins. but when i only enable the realtek driver and disable the high def audio device under both system devices and sound controller tab(in device manager), my system never crashes....until windows enables the driver itself after few days.

i could be wrong, maybe superstition :)

    Hey all!
I have an acer aspire 5740G, and I was wondering have anyone tried to clean its fan? I mean on my old 5630 it was easy to get to it, but here... So does anyone have some kind of guide how to do it?

    Best regards,

What HDMI audio drivers are you using then?
Ethernet controller is Broadcom- there's a link to the driver in the update post.

I can't be easily accessed. That's why it's better to use a gas duster on regular basis before dust gets stuck in the radiator. Only other way id to completely disassemble the laptop.

    @ Riles

Why don't you use Windows 7 DVD (normal one- not Acer recovery disk) and then use the product key from the bottom of the laptop to activate it?

It seems like the video settings in CCC are only made for windows media player...they don't affect other players....just open a quick time movie and change the video gamma while playing a movie....nothing will change! Now do the same while playing something in WMP and you will see the effect. (see attachment)
