    and no hdmi driver. just simple high definition audio codec 6.1.7600.16385 issued by microsoft

    so now ive started downloading the ati hdmi r255 driver. should i do it or not?

    well i downloaded it and when i install. it almost completes but in the end it says "install realtek hd audio driver failure H- error code 0*E0000235

    now it says no driver supported in this package



    Wait. i downloaded a fresh copy using the third link and now its done

    Takes a long time to install..but actually freed up 7GB of my hard disk space!!!
    Probably got rid of all the previous update uninstall files..

    thank you downloads. sorry for the trouble. but updating my ati hdmi driver has improved my gaming performance by almost 10%.solved all micro stuttering issues and no bsod so far!!!

    what changes does service pack 1 have?

    My SP1 installed in a jiffy. It changes nothing quite frankly- all the older updated rolled into one with something added (probably).

    It's the first SP in years that's not really needed or anticipated- that says something about how good Windows 7 is.

    BTW- yesterday was the day that Dead Money DLS was supposed to be released for Fallout New Vegas. Anyone tried it yet?

    I was reading a discussion you had in previous posts about recalibrating the battery so as to see the actual capacity and wear level, and i decided to do it. downloads said that by letting the battery drain completely it got till 0% but my notebook saved it's current state and shut down at 5%.is this normal?

    yup..its normal. 5% is the critical level. Its mentioned in the bios changelog. Doing this till 0% will kill the cells of your battery. Has your wear level values changed?

    i didnt get a bsod for two days. but finay i got a brand new bsod. blue screen view reports it as DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION caused by driver pccsmcfdx64.sys. any light??

    ^ are you using nokia software? If it is so, try uninstalling it and see what happens.
    @ypnos. Let us know how much your battery backup improves after calibration. Don't let the battery drop below 10% when you check the backup time.

    back up time?what do you mean, how much time is left when battery is at 10% or how much battery lasts from 100% till 10%.
    maybe this is a stupid question...

    Sry..I was not too clear. I mean how much battery lasts from 100% till 10% now. And how much battery used to last from 100% till 10% before the calibration.
    This will tell us how much battery performance has increased.

    It will not improve overall- calibration is only meant to make the battery meter accurate but it doesn't improve battery time.

    sutobatsu is right with Nokia software but be careful while searching for it on the net- first five Google results have been blocked by my AV :eek:

    Windows hibernates at 5% battery level- that can be changed. Another matter- this number has nothing to do with critical battery level. Critical battery level is set within the battery itself or within the BIOS so even if you let the battery run until it reaches 0% it will not kill your battery cells.

    ^ Wow! it means my battery could have done more than 2hr 30min (during normal web browsing & downloading, no flash). I had 11% more battery remaining after that. It means I might have got 15-20 minutes more with the remaining battery charge. Quiet good for a 9 month old battery.
    The reason I am saying it could kill your cells because the critical level of the battery is set in the BIOS itself which is being reported by the battery chip. Emptying the battery too much again and again can result in lower charge storage in the battery or resetting the chip to a false level. The chip set at false level can then report a wrong full charge capacity (+ or -) & Windows or BIOS will then obey to it. Its possible that a battery might have 20% real charge level left and reporting it as 5% resulting in shutting down of Windows later or earlier. Thats why some people say that their battery stucks at a point for longer time or falls sharply after a particular point.
    When I first got my laptop, I tried to calibrate my new battery after reading an acer guide. In CPUID hardware monitor my full charge capacity (FCC) was, say 47200 initially and the designed capacity (a constant value) was, say 48000. After first calibration the FCC increased and became 47600. Immediately after that I recalibrated it again it increased to 47920. I thought I can get the remaining 80 so recalibrated again and eventually lost 200 and it became 47720. Then in anger I recalibrated again & lost another 400. Ultimately, I gave up coz either it was resetting the battery chip to a wrong position or the cells were exhausting. Till that day I have recalibrated my battery only once and never let it drop below 11%.
    I have a panasonic one. By the way what this 'Reserve battery Level'?

    How to enable MLAA on HD5650 (thanks to user cowithgun)

    See here for instructions.

    This enables a whole bunch of different things but if you want just MLAA do the following:

    Search in registry for "MLF_NA"
    Change MLF_NA from 1 to 0

    You'll see UMD sub-key on the left panel of regedit at this point.
    Go to this sub-key and create new string value called MLF_DEF. Then change its value to 0.

    At this point you'll need to kill CCC.exe and MOM.exe and start CCC again- you'll see MLAA setting available.
    It works and it can be disabled (which is something that can't be said about my previous mod :D)

    On another note- HT is not really working like you guys made it look like. The story that a process shows 25% utilization but it really does use more is not true at least not fully.
    I'm running OCR on a PDF in Acrobat Pro- 25% CPU utilization because it can't use more than one core apparently.
    It's going rather slow but that on its own would be no proof but the fact that fan is working at low rpm and CPU is in mid-fifties (*C) shows that it really is only 25% of the CPU.
    At least it look like it- I should flash the modified BIOS and make performance tests with and without HT but I have a lot of work (and a cold :() so it will have to wait.

    I wonder if it's just my system (I've been messing around in the registry) or MLAA something else.
    I've had the same results months ago when I managed to enable MLAA myself but I thought I did something wrong.

    Resident Evil 5 Benchmark
    All settings default (high) 1366x768

    no AA- 62,0fps
    8x AA- 46,0fps
    8xMLAA-27,4fps

    What a feature :rolleyes:
    Anyone can confirm these?

    EDIT:
    I thought that it may be caused by the fact that I did only a partial mod (only to enabled MLAA) so I did the rest of the mod too.
    Result:
    8x AA- 45,6fps
    8xMLAA-33,5fps
    This time I kept AA disabled in a game but forced MLAA through CCC.

    Me too enable it now and make some try with Starcraft 2 and I have two times lower fps ~25 on High (GPU) and Ultra (CPU) settings. I think Mobility HD 5650 is week VGA for MLAA, or the driver is not fully optimized.

    EDIT: Take a look at my small (but useful i hope) mod. I use a peace of air-conditionig filter. I thing this will reduce the dust. After a few tests (game and software) I see no difference before and after the mod.

    Alright guys, I wasn`t gonna bring this issue up because i was hoping the SP1 update would fix it but I've experienced it again and again.

    I keep getting BSODs (Usually they happen when I just start up the computer from sleep mode). The parameters are 0x0000007e (0xffffffffc0000005, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff880035a8128, 0xfffff880035a7980). Nothing else after that. I was hoping someone would know how to fix it. Thanks.

    Oh and the SP1 update has slowed down my reboot speed. Anyone know why? Thanks.

    Max temp for the i5-520m is 105c?

    The other night when playing mw2 my cpu hit 101c, then two days later it hit 104c. :eek:

    Ambient temp 23c. Nothing is overclocked. Gpu usually stays below 79c but hit 83c.

    guys, I have lil' problem. Whenever I shutdown my laptop by switching off the main AC power, the brightness level resets itself to level 7 from level 2 set by me. The only change I can think of is that I have removed my battery and running it on direct AC. Is this the problem?
    By the way, I have put my battery in freeze after covering it with a plastic sheet. Is this good?

    It might be a good idea to use some of those little bags with some kind of granulate that absorbs all the moisture- you know the ones that are often in package with products that have to remain dry.

    downloads, does your brightness level remains same when you switch it back on after a complete AC power shutdown (with & without battery)? Mine resets itself to level 7 from level 2.

    The backlight resets because that is a _feature_. It is programmed in ACPI DSDT table. There is a set of numbers (package) returned by _BCL() function that list available brightness levels.

    Here is a quote from ACPI Specification
    For Acer I have, the standard is:
    100 - when on AC power
    60 - when on battery
    10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100 = available brightness levels.

    So what happens is you set brightness level to say 20% and then shut down computer. When you start it up, it checks whether you are on battery or on AC and then calls _BCL() function to get the brightness level for batt/AC and changes brightness to it.

    Theoretically, it is possible to modifiy DSDT table in BIOS (lots of guides can be found online) to set custom brightness levels, both for AC/batt and add new levels. It depends on what BIOS you have though. For AS1410 it was very straightforward and works fine, but for AS3820TG it took a while and custom AC/batt levels don't work for some reason. I did manage to get new brightness levels to work though! For me, instead of 10-100 levels, I now have 1,2,4,6,8,10-100.

    I don't know what OS you are using, but Windows 7 seems to remember the last used brightness setting both on AC and battery, and changes to it automatically. On Ubuntu, you would have to set the preferred brightness levels in Administation->(something)->Power Management or something along the lines.

    Hello Guys! I'm just curios what settings for contrast and saturation do you use to have vivid colours?? Because the ATi default setting seems too colourless...The screen is the standard for 5740G 15.6" 1366x768 one...Also does ATi have something like Digital Vibrance (Which i'm getting used with Nvidia Desktop...) ???

    There's no such thing as standard screen- there are different LCD panels used on different models and settings you've mentioned have to be model specific.

    Fixed: Everest (just installed it...)tells me the LCD is Samsung 156AT02-A02...

    Thanks prikolchik for such a comprehensive answer. You guessed right. I am using Ubuntu & it seems to forget the brightness level set in comparison to windows 7. Windows 7 adjusts the brightness just before the login screen.
    I actually noticed this issue during the boot menu (BURG). I think I'll have to bear with it.

    An update on my BSOD issue:

    It's a ntoskrnl.exe+37c632 issue. I'm gonna run a memory diagnostic thing tonight as my friend recommended although I don't think it's a memory issue. It started when I got my laptop back from Acer with a fresh install with a new HDD. I'm thinking the install went badly and something got corrupted.

    When I do a fresh install, I intend to do a fresh Windows 7 install, not using the Acer partition. However, my friend wants me to ask if the Acer partition optimizes the computer for windows like Lenovo? Or is it just a install + bloatware + drivers?

    x reach the processor must completely disassemble the laptop .... however once set the standard of traveling the processor 2660 MHz, 3200/3300 MHz in turbo mode comes, my rose up to 3000 mhz, but the turbo in 3700 mhz. I think cmq is limited by the quality of the maple also from food which is only 60 w, because I have the version with the ati hd5470 512 mb
