    Yes I did- 670MHz core, 900MHz memory.
It's not a show-off OC- it's the one I've been using for almost a year for all demanding games.

    I'm running @ 700 core / 900 memory
completely stable for a year now :)
There is at least a 10+ fps increase in games like World of Tanks

Just a question: i noticed that catalyst 11.2 is out. Is it worth upgrading? I am still on 10.10. Anyone notice performance improvements? I don't want to lose the capability of overclocking.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Firstly I'd like to say that I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to PC's/laptops, so please do excuse my idiotic questions.

Firstly is this thread about the "5742G".. Since the last number is different to the name of the thread... If it is.. Great... If not, would you mind be hanging around for some off topic advice? :)

    Cheers. Tom

Yes it's different. I think there is separate thread for 5742, but I'm not shure.
This morning i find a new version of AtiTryTools (1.7.something), install it and when try to start i get BSOD. I try two times and it's the same. Have anyone try it, or know why I get the BSOD ?

    Greets,

I'm using Win7 Pro x64 on Acer Aspire 5740G and I'm wondering is it worth to use PowerSmart Manager? How does it work with normal power management in win7?

    Regards
    BT

barthu, I didn't notice any improvement using the powersmart manager over windows 7's. They both gave me the same battery backup time.

Yes, always click on "Restore Default Clocks" there is no other way. When you are going to play some game and you need OC set the values, when you finish reset it. \m/

Did you disable overclocking during ATT setup?

Secondly, ATT already has issues booting with win7 x64... TBH I would suggest getting radeon pro link

Almost exactly the same as ATT but has hardly any of the issues I have faced trying to get ATT to run.

    Really recommend trying it out.

After disableing the oveclock it works, but i don't need it now :D I'd already try it, it's a CCC with different interface. I'm looking for something like Ati Tools easy and simple OC utility.

I can only say that after ugradeing i get about 3-5 fps more then usual, don't know if its worth for you, and why would you lose overclocking capability?
i update my drivers all the time and i can overclock it without any problems. (i use Riva Tuner)

version 2.1.0 should fix the problem, allowing GPU to throttle down properly when in idle mode.

I'm just reporting; i haven't tested it... yet.

Well I had to modify the riva tuner.cfg file to make it work. you will have to check your graphic card "Device ID" with GPU-Z and add it to the riva tuner.cfg like in this pic:
    http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp272/evilky/rivatuner.jpg
so that the program can recognize your GPU. After that you won't have to worry about drivers it will say everytime when you upgrade your drivers that its not tested with the current driver version or something, just ignore the messeage.

@dave4mame We are talking about AMD GPU Clock Utility. I know about MSI Afterburner, but the new version (2.1) can't overclock my 5650 even if I edit the . cfg with "1" at "Enable unofficial overckloking".
    @evilky i make it but still can't edit 2D, low power 3D and 3D modes... or it's inposible ?

ok wait a min the only thing i did is modify the clock rate (core clock, memory clock) to improve performance i don't know any of the options you mention don't even know if Riva Tuner has them.

OK, we clear the things. The Riva has this options, but I have seen them on nVidia GPU, probably for ATI is not supported. Doesn't matter it seems the best and easy way to OC your Mobility ATI is AMD GPU Clock Utility, or Sapphire Trixx. Cheers all !

Where is the loudness correction bar? I don't have one and I have the latest driver 6.0.1. 6316 (looks like they just released it today!!

I don't see/hear much difference from the original 5969 driver...the only improvement is the surround sound option...it's not so extrem anymore, but I have it disabled anyways...

The temperature depends not only on OC but also on game and ambient temp.
If you're testing in the same conditions than it is a signal that your cooling system needs cleaning but if it's a different game/benchmark and/or room temperature is different than it is not a valid comparison.

I don't think disassembly is what you need to do, but you should use gas duster (canned air) on regular basis. If you hadn't done it recently- now it's good time to do so.

For everyone who thinks audio on this laptop is a little bit crappy, use srs audio sandbox as well as dfx audio enhancements simultaneously. Tweak the settings to your needs and the audio becomes really outstanding  . Even the volume increases to very high levels. You will need to adjust setting in dfx though as with initial settings the fidelity and 3D surround will be very high. Search for the programs on the net or ask me, i will e-mail it to you. .

U can play it at highest settings(only shadow at medium). In DX 10 around 40 fps average and in DX 11 around 35 fps average. BTW the game is awesome, better than COD MW2(my opinion). Also check out Sniper Ghost Warrior, awesome graphics, simply awesome. :swoon:

Games and condition not the same , in crysis 2 demo temp. goes up to 80C but in other games 70-75, disassembly was not that easy that i thought so i will use gas duster , thanks for reply =))

PS. using AMD gpu tools , it's resets values every time i turnt it off, is there any danger that i OC it every time or it's doesn't matter at all?

Disregard the SRS Audio Sandbox, and go straight to SRS HD. I've used both, and I must say, SRS HD sounds orgasmic to the ear. Quite literally, my portapros sound amazing when listening through my laptop. Even with lesser headphones you'll get jaw dropping sound performance.

And BFBC2. If you're planning to play online, prepare to drop your settings to low/low/med/med and 0xAA and 2x AF. Reason for this is that BFBC2's hit detection is horrible, and you have random lag spikes everywhere. To remedy these, by putting down your settings, you get less of a chance of screwing up in a huge fire fight. For example, I was .52 KDR before putting down settings. After putting down, I'm sitting at approx .8-.9 atm (still not very good, but meh).

Nvidia gt 425m is slightly slower than hd 5650. Furthermore the 2 gb is not a significant factor as games will use 2 gb graphics memory after like 2-3 years after which both cards will become obsolete. For further info see this NVIDIA Geforce GT 425M - Notebookcheck.net Tech Only benefit is that it has nvidia optimus technology which increases battery life.

It doesn't matter if it has 1GB, 2GB or 16GB- it's 128bit DDR3 and that's the problem. Adding memory is rather cheap way of convincing people that it's a faster card than others.
As mentioned before 420M GT is slightly slower than HD5650- don't know how it overclocks though. If it doesn't OC as well as HD5650 does it will be slower overall. Still it's pretty decent cards so no worries- 540M would be better but if it's not available...

    -----------------------------
    Anniversary note:

On an unrelated note. I bought my 5740G exactly a year ago. Since I still have the same HDD I can tell that it's been on for 5155 hours which is slightly over 14 hours a day every day since the purchase.
Physical condition is close to perfect- no problems here. I still haven't reinstalled Windows- it's the factory install.
Battery wear is (in theory) 18%- in reality it's less but Sony battery lies.
I've finished 19 games on it so far (if you count GTA IV and EFLC as separate games).

Looking at what's available now- HD6550 and Core i5 48-0 I have to say I made a good purchase. A year after and I'm still in the same league as current mid-range systems. I intend to keep 5740G for another year or so and see if a new generation of mid-range cards brings something new to the table.
As for upgrades- I plan on buying 7200rpm drive and making my current one an external backup. I need a backup drive anyway and an upgrade won't hurt.
All in all- it was a good purchase.

The site says 1 gb as the model which they reviewed might have only 1 gb memory. Nvidia nowhere says that the memory of this card is only 1 gb GeForce GT 425M Over time, dell or nvidia may have increased the memory. As far as i know, its just a marketing campaign as most people think "higher memory=better performance". What actually matters is the core and memory speed and its bandwidth. 2 gb is just to woo people. It won't provide any significant performance gain.

Happy Anniversary downloads. Your anniversary should be celebrated by every member of this forum as if you wouldn't have bought this laptop, this forum might not have existed. I am sure many people have bought this laptop only after reading threads on this forum (i did :D ) started by you. Thus many upcoming anniversaries are a result of this one big event which happened exactly a year ago. Thanks again for all your help to various proud owners of Acer Aspire 5740G over the past year.

Bigger graphic memory is useful if you do graphics rendering using, e.g. 3Ds Max. In conjunction with bigger graphic memory, memory speed also important. If you can get GDDR3, it would be better than DDR3. DDR3 is cheap, that is why they can put 2GB without making the notebook too expensive. If you're a graphic designer & also a budget conscience person, e.g. student, any notebook with mid-range graphic card & with bigger graphic memory will be a good choice.

    Hi Guys,
Have been following this thread even before I bought my 5740G in July 2010. Never had post anything before as you guys have talked about everything. Great work!!.

Now let me give you my problem off late my laptop has been running high on temperatures (needs cleaning, thermal paste) just to find other solutions I tried this software Speedfan Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer . Now I suddenly realised that when I run this thing.., I get a good stutter in the audio/video playback (3-4 secs) which I ignored in the last 7-8 days. I very well remember this happening but they were generally lil ones, so didnt bother. Now when I pay attention this happens often, randomly. I cant make it happen all the time but with a HD movie on in the background and a few things open. The audio playback does stutter sometimes (tried different players, audio drivers, settings). Also tried disabling Audio enhancements(googled this). The only thing I have installed lately is the ATI CCC 11.2 before which I dont think this happened, removed this one too but no luck.

I'm getting very concerned over this, will be great if you guys can try & comment on possible fixes...

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Nehal

63xx is 80 stream GPU- like 5470. If you're looking for some kind of meaningful upgrade over HD5650 you should take a look at HD6600/6700 series with 480 streams and GDDR5 in some models.

yeah i feel the same way, 10 months, 1 year in may and im still very happy with my computer! no problems at all, only with high temperatures but, a good clean dropped my temps from 90 to 60 playing games!

only change i made is the wifi adapter, replaced with intel pro wireless 6200, wireless 5ghz, 18mb/s wireless :)

planing on the 7200rpm hd too!

replacing the 5400 HDD with a 7200 HDD won't that reduce battery life?

It will, but not that much..

7200 makes more noise and temps will be higher.

How can one find out the version of bios. I think i had 1.22 but i replaced it with 1.16. My computer is stable by the way. Also after installing catalyst 11.2 my 5650 is running at 300/300 mhz even while playing games. I have to use amd gpu clock tool to set it to 550/750 mhz. Power play is set to maximise performance. At startup ccc says Catalyst Control Centre:Host Application has stopped working and nothing happens.
