For the BIOS...go to start and type system info...how do you check the clock speed while playing games?

I did this GPU-Z~sensors~GPU core clock~show highest reading and then played a game. Come back after a few seconds and see the values. BTW i fixed it. Set it manually to 550/750 in AMD GPU clock tool once and now it works automatically. I have another problem. ATI HDMI Sound device is gone and i can't play sound via HDMI. Should i roll back to original drivers? They worked perfect for me. Also i can't open Catalyst Control Center. It says something like Host Application has stopped working.

You can install ATI HDMI driver from Realtek website to solve one of those problems. The other may require reinstalling of the drivers or may be caused by problems with MS .NET which if I remember correctly is used in CCC- you may want to update or install .NET again.

Is this the latest version? CCC Version 2011.0126.1749.31909
    Direct 3d version 8.14.10.0716, 2D Driver version 8.01.01.984, Driver Packaging Version 8.682.1-091209a-093221C-Acer.
I don't know how but the moment i went to realtek site, ati hdmi came back again itself. :err:

Not really. I have the same CCC version (2011.0126.1749.31909) but I'm not sure if it's the actuall version.
    As for 2D driver- 8.01.01.1123
    Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0812
    Driver Packaging Version 8.821-110126a-112965C-ATI

So most of it different. If you're already playing with it- maybe you wanna test Catalyst 10.4 preview?

Hi, My 5740G has developed a keypad fault.

The space bar only works when you press the right hand side.
I've tried blowing the left side with a can of compressed air in case its a crumb (or something)thats got stuck under it but itsstill the same.

Itsstill under warranty so I can have it repaired FOC but if I send it back and its a crumb then I have to pay a £299 laptop repair cost.

Can I easily remove the keypad to check if theresanything under there?

(ps I say crumb for lack of anything else that could possibly be the problem - I dont normally eat biscuits messily over my laptop :D )

    @ Fastorq
Search on the net for the service manual/service guide for Aspire 5738G.
You'll find detailed disassembly instructions (with photos) there. It's the same chassis that 5740G.

Downloaded the Crysis 2 demo. Only way it is playable is "gamer" settings on 800x600. Then, it is only like 35fps. :(

Notebook has i5-520m and 5650 not overclocked.

Used to play bfbc2 single player only when I first got this notebook. It ran good at mediumish settings.

Go online last week to play and it runs horrible. Low settings at 1280x720 it might average 30fps.

Uninstalled ati drivers and used driver cleaner then put new drivers on the notebook. I ran disk defrag, no virus, spyware, etc.

    :(

5742 is in no way similar to 5740 but I can tell you that from the looks of it it has some problems- look here.

    Re keypad fault..

I lifted the edge of the space bar up a fraction and spotted this tiny screw underneath. I gently lifted it out with a pair of tweezers but should I still take the laptop back to retailer cause screw must have come loose from somewhere ?.

BTW spacebar is working perfectly now.

Ignore it- screws used by Acer are shorter and black so it's probably not part of the laptop. Just keep it somewhere just in case.

    Hello all!

I just installed HWinfo32 and I think something is wrong with this:

    http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt329/adyonel/hwinfo1.jpg

And, on the network tab is

    http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt329/adyonel/hwinfo2.jpg

On the label from the bottom of notebook it is specified I have Atheros AR5B93.

What is the correct device? How can I correct this? Why the maximum speed reported is only 54Mbps? A few days ago I have connected to a wireless router and the speed was 150Mbps.
Sorry for my bad english, and thank's for all who can help me.

Don't be bothered by this- I just checked and mine shows the same thing.
Probably AR5B93 uses AR9281 chip so in one place it shows the actual card and the radio chip in the other.
To connect with 802.11n speeds you need n-capable router/AP and security set to WPA2+AES.

Heya Guys, long time no see from me. :) Unfortunately I'll have to write to you again with a problem. Now I don't know really what causes it, so I will try to give you as much as info as possible.

The problems are actually two: the first is that from time to time i get these buzzes: everything freezes and the sound buzzes. I don't think it's a sound loop, more like something inside the laptop causes these faulty-error sounds. The second problem is that recently my laptop has started to overheat.

Now I don't know that the two things are relevant, but they might be. The reason for that is that these buzzes are completely random and happen in a significant amount from each other. For example this night I played Darksiders for 2-3 hours without any buzz, the logged out, checked some of the WoW forums, then decided to start a movie, and when the temperature was pretty normal: Around 51-52 C the buzz occurred during the serial. However, when I checked the CPU and RAM Usage on the windows (I had it running in the background) I found that there has been a radical increase for a moment in the CPU usage (which can't be good, right?).

So, again, I don't know if it is the temperature. However, for some days My laptop reached 90-96C while playing, it has never reached such high temperatures before. Another thing that I noticed recently is that the funny noises made by the HDD are gone (I generally use quiet_HDD in order to make them stop so that the laptop won't stutter in games/movies and while using the net). However, this night I didn't turn it on, but despite that there have not been any funny noises from the laptop. I can't say the same for the stutters, as in Darksiders it tends to skip even with quietHDD, but that again might have been because of the high temperatures...I really don't know (bought Darksiders this weekend on a Steam Discount, so can't really say anything about it.) However, even in other games the Buzz Grand Stutter is there-with or without quietHDD.

Now, there is a nother thing. From some time the Net is extremely crappy: it slows, it goes faster again, then it may completely stop or skip. It's not me, as the other guys I live with (I live in a rented room in a house, share the net with other people via wireless) have same problems with the Net. The landlord said he will call BT first thing in the morning tomorrow, as this has been going for quite some time now. My point is, could this skippy, really, i mean, REALLY unstable internet (I mean more than usual) be causing either overheating and/or the freeze+buzz thing?

Finally, to be honest, I have not cleared my Laptop since I bought it in June last year. However, it is strange since only recently these problems started (that's why I am giving you the suggestion with the net, I simply DON't know what it might be, so I am telling you everything.

    So, to sum up:
    1) I am having random, but devided by a large amount of time (from 25-30 minutes to couple of hours) Stutter+Sound Buzz (more like a hardware screech), which occures pretty much independently from temperature or the presence of QuietHDD.
    2) The laptop has been overheating, I don't know whether it has to do something with the freeze/buzz thing, or the other one is causing the overheating (maximum temperatures 96-97 C, both on the CPU and GPU). Without the quietHDD maximum is 84 C (which is still quite higher than what it used to be the max, before it wouldn't reach 80 C on any of the parts.
    3) A crappy, very unusual Internet Connection-it constantly stops and resumes, either reaches really high speed or is almost impossible (varying from 1.5 MGB/s to 3.2 kb/s
    4) quietHDD. Now I don't know really whether it is a problem that these sounds have disappeared without turning on the quietHDD. Could the laptop's hard drive have overcome the program or...? I don't know really.
    5) I have not cleaned the laptop for quite some time now. But if it isn't dust that's causing all the troubles, then I have to assume the worst case scenario (which could be...?).

Anyway, sorry for the long post. I literally have NO IDEA which of the above is causing the troubles. I don't want to point you in the wrong direction, so I am pretty much giving you everything that has happened as of late. I have not installed new drivers/updated new drivers (apart from the usual Windows 7 updates, but they can't be the reason for sure). I am running with 10_11 ati catalyst drivers for 3-4 months now, really happy with them.
Oh right: Acer Aspire 5740G-434G64Mn here.

So, if you have any ideas or know what is the problem and know how to help, please, by all means, do tell me what to do. I don't know whether I should be worried too much and what really to do.
Once again: Thank you and sorry for the Long post!

Honestly, I would just format everything and install a fresh Windows 7 copy. And then if it continues, then I'd just bring it into Acer for them to fix. Seems like a hardware problem, especially with your processor problems.

Puhpuhan4o, you can try to do two things at once:
    1. disassemble and clean the laptop + replacement thermal paste
    2. reinstall Windows

    @ Puhpuhan4o

Clean the vents using gas duster (canned air) then reinstall Windows (or use eRecovery which will be faster).
If that doesn't help with overheating it would ne nest to apply new thermal paste.

Try disabling the Surround Sound in Dolby tab. Otherwise use HDMI cable. In HDMI, audio is routed via ATI HDMI audio and it is loud as well as crystal clear. Hope this helps.

Power Play may be active. Check settings in Catalyst Control Centre. If everything is ok, try removing and reinserting charger cable during gameplay. It sometimes works for me. Maybe CCC sometimes forget it is plugged in.

I am not sure about this but i think that the internet connection quality also has effect on the graphics quality of a multiplayer game. If you have a slow internet connection, online gameplay will lag at high settings. If the game runs fine at single player mode then nothing to worry about. BTW i m playing the game right now at everything high except shadows at medium, AAx2 and AFx4. :D

:swoon: HOLY :swoon: Really!!! I never thought my laptop had so much power under the bulbous blue hood. How much have you OCd?

guys! I need urgent help. My laptop has stopped working. It is not powering on, no matter its on AC power or battery or both. The two LEDs at the front are not on or blinking either. The power button lights are also not working. I tried the battery removing trick but still no joy. Has the mobo gone kaput. In that case what would be my options in dealing with the service center if they are not able to repair it. My warranty expires on 2nd june.

Back up your data as the HD will be erased by Acer staff and RMA the notebook.
They do have spare motherboards so it shouldn't be a problem for them to make your notebook work.

Is the LED on PSU on? If it is- go on with RMA, if not it's probably PSU issue.

Weird.I just had the same problem few weeks ago. While working it just went on battery mode and wouldn't use the Charger. The LED on the charger was on, but it wasn't on the front of the notebook or at the power button.I brought it to the service center and on the next day they replaced my charger, but when i plugged it in when i got home-same problem. Then after a week they returned it to me with again "replaced charger" written in the repair protocol(im not sure that is how i must say it in English). The charger it is working on now looks different then the original.

Hopefully there's no design error in 5740G.
If we all end up losing laptops soon it's going to be a pity.
That said- it's mostly bad luck. I had recommended this notebook to an acquaintance, he bought it and it worked fine for a while and suddenly died (simply switched off). Acer put a new mobo in it and it turned out that GPU on the mobo was malfunctioning right of the bat- so he got another one.
On the other hand I've had no problems at all for a year now.

BTW- if any of you guys and gals have any problems that force you to get in contact with Acer support, please post about it so others would know if it's a known issue and how to deal with Acer in similar situation.

thanks for your replies guys. Downloads, are you talking about that LED on the adapter or the power unit built inside the laptop that makes that round power button glow? The LED on the adapter is on but the power button isn't. I am going to take it to the service center. I have taken the case id through their customer care which is valid for 5 days. Downloads, how should I take the backup from the hdd. Wouldn't getting it out of its place voids its warranty?

I was talking about external power adapter.
Removing HDD will not void your warranty- you are allowed to upgrade RAM and/or replace HDD. The only case in which it would void you warranty is if you damage something in process of upgrading or your new hardware will fry something- none of which applies to you.

Exactly the same problem as mine.Light on power adapter was on, but the light on the front of the notebook was off and the light at the power on button was off too.

Thanks for the replies, guys, I hadn't checked the site for some time, took me a while.
So you think that these problems might be caused by dust/uncleaned vents?
I will have it cleaned then shortly, already started asking around.
The thing is though that now I am in Birmingham, Uk, because I am studying at the moment. I bought my laptop from Bulgaria, where I generally live. Do you know how to find a repair shop where my warranty (it is an international one) will be valid, so that if it turns out that it is more than dust after they service and clean it (and test it), I won't have to pay for a second laptop to repair my laptop (as I am pretty sure that the prices are really high here)? Something like an Acer Shops map, or something, or ideas?
    Thanks again :)
