I play it on GAMER and 1024x600 and with Crysis 2 Advanced Graphic Tool disable the AA and MSAA and i have 50-60 fps. This is only good playable way for me. I forget - OC 700/900. CPU temp 81 degree and GPU 79 degree.

I play on advance, haven't overclocked it. I don't have fraps atm, so can't see what FPS i have. But it aint lagging and its very smooth :) .

:( Had demo problems, but I am thinking about getting the full version. I did some tweaks to improve bc2, so crysis 2 might be better.

Yeah full resolution...CPU&GPU temperatures aren't that high either, since i changed thermal paste recently. It is OK game.. i would prefer crysis 1 tho, because it's in jungle :D .

I give you guys wrong info. Settings on LOW (disable AA and other similar stuff) on 1366x768 I get 30-50 fps depending on the world details. It's playable, but there is some tiny lag in combat. Everything in hardware is default. If i put 1024x600 i get 70-80 fps and very good gameplay.

guys, I have been to Acer SC and they figured out that my mobo has gone kaput. Its non-repairable and therefore replaceable only. They have put a request for it to the main centre. I only asked them about the problem but not about how it happened. I was running the laptop on inverter power during power outages. Could that be the reason? During this I noticed that my cfl lamp used to fluctuate a bit during cpu activity correspondingly but I ignored it. By the way, can you guys suggest me a good VFM cooling paste so that I can ask the acer guys to put it onto my NEW mobo. I heard good reviews about that vfm arctic something from downloads. Is that good? Do I really need the paste or the new mobo comes alongwith that? Sorry for so much questions. I am really frustrated without my lappy.

I finished Crysis 2 yesterday....on Hardcore Settings(DX9) 1366 X 768....(I dont mind ~20fps because the Graphics are simply awesome)....but one thing i noticed was that the temperatures were quite high than usual.... CPU-90°C(max) ; GPU -85°C(max) after just 20 minutes of gameplay...WITHOUT Overclocking....and the problem is these temps remain there or even increase after some more time of gameplay ...now this can be dangerous for both right if these temps remain for like hours

    But for other games(gta,crysis1) CPU-82°C & GPU-76°C max.....

So what i did was I downclocked the CPU (about 2.1 GHz which is nothing but the basic laptop core i3 clock -- quite decent to run a game---No Turbo Boost) and overclocked the GPU (670/800)
    I noticed an interesting thing.....
After 2 Hours of Gameplay Crysis 2:
    CPU-77°C max
    GPU-76°C max
Conclusion.....temps of CPU and GPU are related.....I know they are both independent parts and that they heat up differently depending what type of application u r running....but in a laptop they are placed close to each other... the hot air over them is of almost the same temperature...

And I did not notice any difference in performance of the game....

But Crysis 2 takes advantage of multicore and hyperthreading technology which pushes all the cores to the maximum ...

For what it requires so much processing ?
The CPU does part of Physx processing and polygons processing before the actual rendering which is done in the GPU ...

I think the CPU wont matter for mainstream systems....because the capacity of rendering of the GPU is almost equal or less than the polygons processing capacity of the CPU (Eg..in our case ...core i5 430M )......

But in high end systems (like sli or crossfire or even ATI 6990 or NVIDIA 580 ) the capacity of rendering of the GPU is quite large.......so it will require a much powerful processor.....otherwise the CPU will be the bottleneck....
.....Correct me if I am wrong.....
Its not that I dont like my laptop .....I love it ....I read this thread before buying it......No regrets...this laptop is one of a kind...

Hey guys, I have a certain problem with my Acer Aspire 5740G.

Somehow, when I press FN+UP or any other function or when I turn on Wireless, it does not show the "icon" of the thing I am doing on my screen, whereas it did show them when I bought the lap.

Can anyone tell me how to solve this issue?

Someone try them ? Any change log ? Any impression of the new driver ?

EDIT: OK, my first impression is that i get better game performance in Crysis 2. On native resolution and "Low" settings (with Advanced Graphic Options 1.5) and disable blur, AF, AA and similar stuff i have from 30 to 60 fps and smoother gameplay. I didn't try other games, but now the Crysis 2 is more good playable :)

Shouldn't be connected the power adapter could get damage but it should protect the MB and also the switched power supply should work fine even with voltage variations. If you could follow it up it would be interesting to know the cause. But I think it's somthing different than the inverter.

I'll ask them about the cause once I get back my laptop. It would be better if someone answers my other questions asked above in my post. I am still waiting for them. There is one more suggestion I need from you guys. Should I extend my warranty for another 2 years for 100$ ? I originally purchased my laptop for 1k.

I wouldn't use an inverter any more- if the lamp fluctuated then but didn't when connected normally- it stands to reason that it may be the cause of the malfunction or at least that it has some effect.
As for thermal paste- they will provide new mobo with thermal paste already there so if service staff is any good there's no reason for you to intervene at least for the time being. Monitor the temps under load for a while- if temps are OK- leave it.

I do like Arctic Silver- some people say that there are better ones- I'm sure there are but this one is very good, easy to apply and I know that it's fine after years of service. It's also easily available where I live and there are no requirements towards what the radiator is made of like in the case of Liquid Metal.

As for warranty- if yours is 1 year than go for another two.
Mine is two years- UE default- so I'll stick to that.

thanks downloads for answering. The lamp used to fluctuate all the time when on inverter power during cpu activity. I was ignoring this issue for 10 months thinking that it could be due to the extra 10 hertz (total 60 hz) that the inverter was supplying above the 50 hz Indian power standard. During these 10 months, two or three times I heard a crackling sound from inside the laptop during the booting process. The sound was like the crackling that comes from the speakers while playing a very old vinyl record. It might be some internal sparking.
Can I use an APC UPS instead of the inverter?

Yes I think UPS would be a lot better- or you can test one of those 8 cell batteries that should give you additional 5-6 hours of work provided it's not very intensive work.

    Hey everyone

As I've had my 5740G for about 3/4ths of a year, I'd like to open it, or at least take some of the covers off, and give it a good dusting with one of these, as well as possibly clean the keyboard out.

Which areas of the laptop are likely to become dusty, and can I access any of them without voiding the warranty?

    Thanks in advance.

You have to disassemble the notebook quite a bit to be able to access the vents and fan from the inside. If you are interested in the description of the process search the net for Aspire 5738 or 5740 service guide- these can’t be shared here.

Hello guys/gals, can someone please tell me if my temps are OK?

CPU: Starts at 45C, after getting to 51 fans kick in (little annoying sound btw) and push it back to 45 - this is on idle with or without (didn't saw difference) download manager on background. While browsing it's pretty much the same. While playing 1080p movie or playing games like Diablo 2 or Fallout 2 (aka "quite old") it gets up to 60C. Dragon Age 2 is around 65C and Mirrors Edge cca 70C+-. Playing visual novels varies from 45 to 60C.

GPU: No OC. 49-54C on idle. Up to 71C under load.

HDD: Cca 45C on idle. Up to 49C - little worried here. Can HDD get this hot?

Everest also shows something called PCH - practically constant temp : 59-61C. No idea what this is.

But my biggest concern is keyboard and touchpad - they are getting rather hot. Not enough to burn myself, but it feels uncomfortable. And REALLY uncomfortable while gaming. Should it be like this?

Laptop is 3/4 year old. Room temp is 20-25C.

I think I should clean fans but after I saw disassemble guide I was quite horrified (from what I saw I would have to dissasemble whole laptop to get to fans). Maybe I'll ask friend. In case I'll be cleaning vents:
1, Will that break my warranty?
2, Should I change thermal paste as well?

I am also considering cooling pad. Would that be of any help?

Thanks in advance for any response. And excuse my English ;) .

Sorry I didn't notice 2006 in your post and somehow thought 3DMark 11.
I did uninstall 3DMark06 already but I will download again and post my score in a couple of hours.

    EDIT: 3DMark06 8359 (670/900)

    @TheThomas

Your temps are great. Almost all questions about overheating concerning this laptop are answered like that- 5740 doesn't overheat at all unless you get the vents intake really dirty.

thanks downloads :), i test 11.3 and i am not happy. first- i uninstall old (11.2) drivers, reebot and install 11.3 (the same way as always) and i have blue screen of death (i read in other forum some people have the same), first BSOD in this laptop in win7 ever! next restart and install ok. But performance in games is worst than 11.2, i have less fps and higher temp.
    i come back to 11.2.

Sorry to bother, but does that mean it's fine even if my keyboard and touchpad are quite (uncomfortably) warm? If yes, would cooling pad help lowering keyboard temp?

Guys! I am into deep trouble. My most stupid fear came true. I feared that the Acer guys might replace my motherboard with the one with an integrated ATI 5470 512MB and this is what these morons have done in real. Now I have ATI 5470 instead of 5650 1GB. I asked them about this and they have written something on the job sheet about MISMATCH something. I have a copy of the job sheet and have accepted the laptop. They said they will report it to Acer via email and let me know further, till then I can have the laptop for the time being.
Moreover they have not done well with the thermal paste. Now my fan is on all the time and the gpu temp never goes below 51 C whereas it was 41 C before with the ATI 5650. The CPU temps are fine. Are the thermal paste places for CPU & GPU different. Obviously I think. I have completely lost my mind now. Feeling out of luck. Lets see what destiny has decided for me.

As i recall i should leave it until it shuts off but at what point windows prevent the battery and shut it off at 5% ? should i change that???

    HI guys

I just found about this forum and literally fell in love :D
    Great work guys

But I have a couple of questions:
1)Lately when I play games the game becomes unplayable (very lagy) after about 15 mins and it doesnt return to normal. but it starts out perfect no lag great graphics. it happens in all of my games (even the ones that used to work perfectly)

2)I tried installing the webcam drivers on the first page but it says unrecognized camera!?

I'v been searching for an answer of my first question for a while now.
If you guys can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

    1) Probably it's overheating. Clean the vents with canned spray, or small compressor (while holding the fan with screwdriver) or open the laptop by using the service manual.
    2) Do you try all cam drivers from Acer support site ?

With 5650 I always had 49C+ and my fans are getting on and off once per minute or two.

Also, I am curious - would it be possible, with some very good thermal paste, eliminate need of turning fans on at least while idle?

Edit: And is there any way to set rpm of fans by myself?

It's unlikely. You can have it two ways- either fan is rarely on and the units gets hot (and the fan starts at high rpm) or the fan is on at low rpm and keeps the unit cool at all times. Fan is started by CPU temp and the threshold seems to be pretty low so very good thermal paste will make the "fan-off" periods only a little longer.

My HD5650 idles @50*C too so I suspect you may not remember it correctly subrotobasu.

I may not be sure about the fan speed when I had 5650 but I am pretty much sure that in case of my 5650 the GPU temps would go as low as 39-40C at which I hear the fan sound being off or lowered. After that the temps would rise to 46-47C and I hear the fan kicking in, then I could hear the fan running till the temp. reaches 41-40C. This is all during the normal surfing and browsing computer folders.
I can't be wrong as I always keep the temp. gadgets running and its like a habit of mine to monitor the temperatures while I do stuffs.
This is my gadgets' screenshot. Here you can see my new 5470 GPU :( .

BTW why is your temporary card ;) using full clocks on the screenshot?
Is PowerPlay disabled or were you simply using some app that needs hardware acceleration like a video player?

^ because I was viewing the Opera Taskbar thumbnails (window previews) of the webpages that were opened at that time. It hangs there hardly for 1 or 2 seconds and then comes back to lowest clocks, its normal. Thats why the GPU Load was 0% at that time.

    OK. Just asking ;)
    Well I hope you'll get HD5650 soon.
If they don't have mobos with it anymore try to force them to give you at least 5820TG- same size, same GPU, similar price.

^ Wow! good idea. If this happens, would they give me an older one or new one. Till now they haven't contacted me regarding the mobo availability. I have emailed a complaint to their customer care which they told would be replied within 24 hrs but they haven't. Gonna call them tomorrow.
I think its the serviceman's fault. He didn't know that 5740G comes in two flavors. He came to know that when I told him so. After that he started giving his own lame excuses that Acer might not have the mobo with 5650. What a jerk! He was even trying to convince me that the ATI 5470 will perform more or less the same like 5650. Stupid!

Thanks for the answers. I just did a complete disasembly and cleaned out everything and its better. But its still not like it used to be. I havent overclocked my comp. maybe thats the problem. for overclocking I found a program called AMD Overdrive. should I use that one or the one on the first page? and how do u use HWmonitor? do I just leave it on for a while?

Do I have the lowest WEI hdd score? It scores a 5.5, which is my lowest. That was with the hitachi 320gb.

Parents picked up a budget lenovo and it scores a 5.9 with a 320gb wd blue. I had an extra wd blue that I swapped for it but my score stayed the same.

Wow, this thing gets hot too. Hitachi maxed out at 113F, this has already seen 122. Seems faster though.
