The thing with the dvds is like with HDD.Our 640GB HDD is actually 596 GB, because they count it as 640 000 000 000 bytes which is exactly 596 GB.It is same with dvds, usb flash drives and pretty much any storage media.

hey, i have a question! if anyone knows
i started using 3D on my 5740g, plugged on my samsung 3D tv, everything is working fine, games, iso 3ds, side by side, really nice, 15 months and this computer still surprises me, i really had no expectations that 3D was going to work that good! im using tridef drivers( TriDef 3D Experience | DDD )

but i've a question, actually not a question, im curious! 3D settings is showing hdmi 1.4a
    [IMG]
is that correct? 15 months old laptop and already have 1.4a hdmi? :O
    anyone knows?
    thanks!

If the core temps are around 70C while browsing & listen to music or watching video, it does too high. If you already clean the FAN/exhaust grills/vent with compressed air but no or little improvement, you will need to reapply thermal paste.

The DVD-ROM discs are actually available in different sizes. Some have 4.3GB, some have 4.7GB & some have 3.9GB. So, the DVD-ROM drive will report the actual storage size of the DVD-ROM discs.

Only HDMI 1.4a supports "3d over HDMI" (relating to wikipedia). So, if it works, it means it actually IS 1.4a :p

    Hey guys,

Can anyone tell me what the slot next to HDD is for?

(When you remove the HDD plastic, it is on the opposite side of the HDD's connectors, at the front of the laptop, but to the oppsosite side of the card reader)

I'm guessing you're referring to a free full height mini-PCI Express slot.
That can be used to quite a few things- although some interesting modifications would require some work on the chassis but basically you get use it for anything you want- mini-SSD, 3G modem, TV-Tuner (if you mod the chassis) etc.

    Hello mixedup, welcome to NBR

Unless a hidden partition had been removed the easiest way is to press F2 when you see Acer logo on the screen- this will get you into BIOS setup.
When you're there verify that D2D recovery (or Disk 2 disk recovery) is enabled.
If it isn't please enable it and save settings.

On next reboot press Alt+F10- that should start Acer eRecovery which will do exactly the same thing recovery DVDs would have- just faster.

All that assuming I correctly understood your question.

Hi I'm in need of help here. Or rather my friend is. He got an Acer Aspire 5740 from our college bookstore for working with CS5.5 (Adobe Master Collection) however whenever he tries to install it he gets a message that says something like incompatable graphics display... (sorry for the long sentence lol) anyway I will post again later today once he brings it over and I can take a look at the specs. But anyone have any idea why it won't install? (he downloaded direct from adobe.com so there should be no corruption or file damage.

    Welcome to NBR.

Try to update graphics drivers first- no idea if it's related but that's one thing to test (most recent drivers are in second post of this thread)

eRecovery process does revert you to the same moment when you first bought the computer- new system, the same drivers that computer came with and the same pre-loaded applications that were installed at that time.

Maybe you can take a photo of the blue screen and post it here so we have a better idea of what the problem is? Or write it down if the blue screen appears long enough.

My computer gets blue screen often too (im on inspiron 1520) but thats due to my hardware dying. I've had this for goin on 6 years and use it essentially as a portable desktop.
Here is somthing that may help.
If this truly annoys you and you are certain your recovery disc is not corrupted then do this.
[needed materials(OS recovery Disc, Drivers install disc, Copy of BIOS Setup for later reference) and whatever else you may need such as backed up files(not recommended if you are fixing blue screen as may be corrupted)]
    1. Turn off computer [unplug internet from it too]
    2. at startup choose boot from disc(OS Recovery)
    3. Remove your HDD OS partition and re-install with disc
    4. When it starts place in drivers disc
    5. each drive should prompt 3 choices (repair, modify, remove)
    6. Remove each driver starting with BIOS and then Install BIOS, repeat for each driver when Finished
    7. Once re-install is complete turn off computer again and plug internet back in
    8. at Startup go to BIOS and check settings to be certain everything installed correctly
    9. then reboot and enter boot menu (or BIOS or wherever this is on your computer) and choose run diagnostic
    10. once FULL diagnostic is done you should have no problems unless problem is hardware and not software.

[feel free to point out if i missed anything but this should work] :D

The cat 11.9 drivers gave me almost headaches...I got Blue screen crashes while installing and the performance is worse. I finally went back to cat 11.8 and everything is OK.
I should stop updating every month, especially since I don't game anymore and don't need the game fixes.
Anybody else had problems installing cat 11.9?

I've been thinking of installing cat 11.9 in my Ubuntu because at least one user in a different forum claimed his battery life was better with it... Has any linux user installed Cat 11.9? If so, how are you liking it? (Oh, and it looks like it only partially fixed some of the issues in Gnome3.)

Hi guys, I put a video link, to remove parts acer 5740G:

    TécnicosCLIC - Reparar Portátil - Cambio DC-Jack - YouTube

Catalyst 11.9 work fine in my laptop... Battlefield 3 multiplayer beta, ultra config and max filters, 28_40fps to 1366x765 max temp 86. whit o.c 670/980 mhz.

well, other question. I seen that the mobility hd 6750,with ati try tools you can try raising and lowering the voltage of the gpu for extreme O.C , but I have bsod in the ati hd 5650,because is not suported in all version, someone else to try?

What u say?! BF3 on ULTRA DETAILS!!! Is that possible? xD
Oh, and blame me for not posting disassembly video earlier. I've managed to replace CPU, apply new thermal compound and reassemble that laptop in ~30 minutes after a few tries. It was a great fun to race with time while dealing with such a sensitive parts xD
BTW: Nice equipment you have there ;]

i noticed something weird today. earlier used to get 60fps in resident evil5 (with no AA. rest maxed.).but today when i tried to play i got only avg 45 fps...what gives?? is it because of the new ccc drivers?? even though i never use mom.exe..i always terminate it from task manager because i noticed better smoothness in games while doing so. can you guys check if resident evil 5 works fine with ccc11.9??

I got bored and decided to do something downloads-style. :p
Thirst thing I got my eyes on was the stock battery for 5740G that I had replaced a month ago.
I pried it open and confirmed that it uses Sony cells- 6 x SONY US18650GR to be exact.
I found those online for some $3 apiece which means you can rebuild your battery for $18 + P&P.
    It should be relatively easy.

I was too lazy to look for any other brand- just re-typed what I saw on the cell to see how much it costs.
Sanyo cells would be better though- you're right there's no point in using the same type of cell that just dies on you.

The battery opens like an egg container- only from one side- it's one piece of plastic with plastic latches keeping it closed.
I closed it and it's fine- if you manage to break too many latches you may just glue the whole thing together- it's very unlikely that you'll be going through this procedure more than once.
