    Then thats really strange.
If my AMD proccessor, dual core 2.8 overclocked to 3.2 GHz runs GTA4 DLC expansions with good frame rate, why my laptop runs it with poor frame rate? If turbo boost works, it should run the game with 3.2 GHz also.

(amd before overclock, with 2.8 GHz, had low frame rate issues also)

Intel Core CPU Turbo Boost depend on several criteria:-
    - the power consumption is below the maximum TDP (Thermal Design Power)
    - the current drawn is below the limit
    - CPU temperature below the thermal limit
    - number of active cores

CPU Turbo Boost depend on the load & it's limited by the above factors ^. In real world, CPU won't Turbo Boost to the highest maximum frequency all the time. On some CPU, you can increase the TDP/TDC limits & this will allow CPU to Turbo Boost with maximum frequency a bit longer but this also means CPU will generate more heat.

This demonstrate how Turbo Boost work:-
    Core i5-520M - Turbo ratio 1/1/2/4
    - First number is the multiple of 133.33 MHz when four cores are active.
    - Second number is the multiple of 133.33 MHz when three cores.
    - Third number is the multiple of 133.33 MHz when two cores.
    - Fourth number is the multiple of 133.33 MHz when one active core.
Normal operating frequency is 2.4 GHz = 2400 MHz
    * With 3 or 4 cores active: to 2.533 GHz —————> 2400 + 1 x 133.33 = 2400 + 133.33 ≃ 2533.33
    * With 2 cores active: to 2.667 GHz ———————> 2400 + 2 x 133.33 = 2400 + 266.66 ≃ 2666.66
    * With only 1 core active: to 2.933 GHz —————–> 2400 + 4 x 133.33 = 2400 + 533.32 ≃ 2933.32

As you can see it will Turbo Boost to the maximum frequency when only one core active. This require all other cores to sleep/inactive but they can easily wake up when another tasks require processing power.

Can you give a screenshot of your CCC Information/Software TAB ? I run Battlefield 3 on MEDIUM settings with low AA and AF and 700/900 Mhz ovckl. 5650, i5-540m on native res and the result is 30-40 fps and the gameplay is normal, but I'll be happy to see some more fps ? When is coming the official 11.10 driver ?

    Hello everyone.
it may sound stupid but i really need to ask because it would be a really nice feature.
is it possible to put one hdd on the optical bay and make raid 0 with the internal one?
    thanks.

It would be faster and cheaper to leave the desktop connected via an Ethernet cable but if you're looking for a Wi-Fi setup for desktop why don't you give those a look- TP-Link TL-WN851ND and TP-Link TL-WN951N.
These are relatively cheap and offer good performance for the price (as usually with TP-LINK).

    EDIT:

New Atheros Wireless driver- 9.2.1.459 added to driver-update post

    Hi guys,

Firs time poster, long time lurker here, I bought my 5740g last year on the reccomendations of this forum so thanks for that!

so far its been an awsome machine much more than i ever expected it to be, that is until now where I have come accross my first problem as stated in the title.

My blu-ray drive will not read any discs, I mean none at all, be it blu ray dvd or cd, i keep getting the disc being autmatically ejected by the drive and a message from windows asking me to insert a disc.

I have even tried to reinstall windows 7 x64 home professional but the laptop wont boot from the optical drive either!

    can anyone suggest a fix?

    cheers

It's easy to remove the Blu-Ray- just one screw accessible from the outside and you can pull the drive out.
I would do that and try any other SATA drive from a notebook you might have handy to check if the other one would work.
Sometimes these drives just die on you and at first glance it looks like that's just happened to you.

Mobile Catalyst 10.11 out- see the update post for download links.

Grrrrrrr, the catalyst 11.10 works very poorly!! in Rage the textures are blue, I can not play, counter strike source the same history and Battlefield 3 random crash...

I reinstalled 11.10 preview3 in my system and no problem.

Hi, I wanted to ask about the temperature you have with the core i7 620m, I recently install the core i7 640m, and even applying artic silver 5, I get to 92 degrees maximum, what is your temp??

With catalyst 10.10, i have random crash in the load menu of battlefield 3, texture bug in rage, microsuttering in counter strike source...But the fps are the same.

Hi starsay. I remove the i7-620m CPU and sell it before a few months, but always forget to edit my signature. As I remember the CPU at max load with max load of the GPU I did't reach 90 dergee (around 87-88). I use Arctic Cooling MX-4. Did you remove the black sticker of the cooling from the side of the CPU ? If no, remove it. But I sell it not because of high temps, but because of low temps. The CPU never go below 50 degrees and the fan never stops spinning at low speed and I did't like that.

For the driver: remove it, clean with some driver removal software and make a clean install.

What is the idle & max temp for i5-540M? I tried MX-4 for a couple of months. I found CPU temps, idle & max, are too high. After I changed to other thermal compound, idle temp down around 10C & mac temp down around 25C. This show that somehow MX-4 unable to work best on my notebook. I believe it have to do with pressure. Some thermal compound need under pressure to work best. I only own a couple of notebooks. So, I can't say for all notebooks. At least all notebooks I own, heatsink only give little pressure on the processor. Obviously because mobile processor only protected by heat cap.

According to datasheet, CPU frequency for both i7-620M & i5-540M will go down to 1.2 GHz (LFM) when idle. So, idle temp should be similar for both unless the i7-620M didn't really idle or thermal conductivity is poor. Also background process can prevent CPU frequency from entering LFM state. i7-620M have higher frequency & when Turbo Boost, frequency also higher. If it always busy & poor thermal conductivity, it won't have enough time to cool down which explained the higher idle temp. 5740G have proper heatsink & I don't see any weakness. What left is good thermal compound.

My best results obtained with a core i7 640m, applying artic silver 5, for me is the best, when the heatsink is not polished, I get the following temperatures:
    min: 40-44
    average: 49 -54
    max: 78-85
    (crysis 2, 92 degrees)
EDIT: core i7 640 runs at idle 1.33Ghz.

I think the 133mhz difference in idle, are what makes turn the fan and minimum temperatures rose slightly...

i7-640M in LFM state should be 1.2GHz too. So, it should idle at 1.2GHz. Do you have HWiNFO32 installed? You can check LFM with it.

For my i5-540m from 43 up to 50 and the fan start and if the CPU is idle go back to 43 and stop. When the load is 100% and the video is 700/900 Battlefield 3 I have 82-83 max on one core and 3-5 degrees less on other core. The difference between i5 and i7 is the TDP, i7 works on higher TDP. My i7-620m idle around 50 degrees. That's why I sell it. Cheers !!!

Depend on the CPU specification. i5-540M PGA & BGA max TDP are 35W. i7-620M PGA & BGA max TDP are 35W.

    My i7-720QM with max TDP 45W can idle at 44C - 47C:-
    [IMG]
This show idle temp is not influence by TDP.

After changing the core voltage from 1.0V to videobiose to 1.05V (BIOS flash by) my video card stopped Overlock. AMDGPUClockTool and MSI Afterburner do not want to work: AMDGPUClockTool an error "Check the configuration of the Device." MSI Afterburner changes frequency only visually. In reality, the card works only at 550/750 1.0V. Maybe I missed something during the modification of the videobios?

what program did you use to edit VBIOS?
MSI afterburner works very bad for me.

I haven't been able to change voltage either. What's more from what I've seen editing BIOS doesn't do the trick either.
It is possible that it's a hardware limitation.

5650's voltage regulator on 5740G might have limited range of voltages it can accept. I believe I did saw 5650 on different notebook/brand can undervolt/overvolt using Saphire TRIXX (I'll try to find it again & update here). If I'm not mistaken, 5650 on 3820TG also can't change voltage but they managed to overvolt using VBIOS mod with a little bit tweak ( source).

I read that- it works only on 5820TG. In general if TRIXX doesn't work neither does BIOS mod so I'm with kizwan on that- it's a hardware limitation- if a voltage regulator is rated up to 1V it simply won't go above that value.

How well does this computer run BF3 on multiplayer? During beta, I got horrific lag spikes/drops in frame rates (not sure which), and if my playing experience is going to be like that, I don't want to buy it. As long as I get around 40 FPS, I'll be happy, on everything low.

This game is limited by the processor, oc not work.
Modern warfare 3 works fine, with core i5 430m, max settings/1366x768 fps: around min 26/ average 40 fps
    core i7 640m fps: min 38/ average 58
For the best graphics select "native" not "extra" in image quality option.
    Great game!!

Hi, I was wondering if you guys had a solution for this laptop not powering on. It just suddenly refused to power on one day. It was in absolutely perfect condition prior to then. I have taken it apart myself and found no cosmetic defects. Everything looked seated correctly. The charger was tested for the correct voltage, so that's not the problem. Apparently Acer laptops tend to have this problem, but I've tried everything they suggested on their support website. Their only other solution is sending it in for depot repair at $200! It's not worth that much. Any help is much appreciated.

On a side note: Thanks for maintaining this thread downloads! I can't thank you enough for the driver links and all of your technical knowledge.

    Hello and welcome to NBR
Thanks for the compliment but it's not entirely true- I'm incompetent I just hide it well  We do have a nice community here though.

As for the fault itself. It's not something that happens often and I don't think we've had a case like that with 5740 but I have heard of that happening to one 5740 owner in real life.
In his case mobo died- for no good reason- it just happens sometimes.
Mobo itself costs some $200 but that's only when you replace it.
There is a chance Acer can fix it. They gave you $200 quote for something?

Apart from that you might want to remove different parts of the laptop- RAM, HDD, Wi-Fi and disconnect the LCD to check if there's no electrical issue with one of those.
Is any of the diodes on? Have you tested with the battery out too?

The Acer support rep said, "We can schedule a repair for your computer. The depot repair cost would be $199 excluding one way shipping and tax." He also said that I could use phone tech support, but I wouldn't spend money on that. He said nothing else specific.

Once I had taken everything apart, I tested to see if it would run without the LCD, Wi-Fi, and HDD. Absolutely nothing. None of the lights turn on, no matter if the battery is in or not. Prior to it not powering on, I used it mostly without the battery in it. Putting the battery in without DC power doesn't work, even though I know it was/is fully charged.

I got some advice from another source that said they resoldered the power jack plug into the motherboard and that fixed their problem with an Acer Travelmate. My question now is, should my laptop be able to power on using the battery if indeed the power jack is not fully seated?
