I install the core i7 640m, due to high core temperatures i7 720 Qm, what is your maximum temperature with Battlefield 3?
I've seen the Core i7 820QM very cheap, anyone know if I could install it on my acer 5740G, without overheating? perhaps with a good thermal compound as Shin-Etsu ...

I don't have BF3 but I expect for i7-720QM max temperature around 70C - 78C. If i7-720QM work on this notebook, i7-820QM should work too. i7-720QM idle at 933MHz while i7820QM idle at 1.2GHz. So, the idle temp between those two will different in a couple of degrees. I already look at 5740G heatsink. I don't see why 5740G can't get similar result. There are many good thermal compound such as ICD7, Arctic Silver 5, Shin-Etsu & several other which I don't remember their name. I only have tried Arctic MX-4 & Shin-Etsu G751. The result is Shin-Etsu is a lot better. Shin-Etsu G751 is the weakest Shin-Etsu available but they works great.

downloads, kizwan, may have the ability to change the core voltage HD5650M in earlier versions of the BIOS? I would myself experimented, but can't-older versions of BIOS do not support processors with stepping K0.

I have no idea but I can't test earlier BIOS versions since my Core i5 560M is not supported. That said I suspect it would be entirely due to VBIOS portion so the main BIOS wouldn't matter.
That is assuming voltage can be changed at all which seem doubtful.

I don't think you have a choice- it's seems it's SetFSB or nothing.

I'm not sure I understand the question. If you meant that when idle GPU is clocked at 100/150 than yes that is the case.

Long time lurker of this thread since I bought my 5740G.

This has been invaluable to me so I thought I'd just throw some stuff back for you all...

I have a UK Acer 5740G-434g50mn (That's in i5 M430 (1066MHz FSB sadly) with 500GB HDD, and a ATI Mobility 5470 with 2GB HyperMemory). Oddly I think the on-die GPU memory is only 512GB... Anyone know?

    Catalyst drivers v 11.10, on Windows 7 Sp1 x64.

I can stable-clock my GPU with AMD GPU Clock tool to 850 Proc /1050 Mem but in games I clock it to 800/1000.

Using Geeks3D tessmarks 0.2.2 ( [GPU Tool] TessMark 0.2.2: New OpenGL 4 Tessellation Benchmark - 3D Tech News and Pixel Hacking - Geeks3D.com) and all settings stock my overclock boosts me from 36 to 44FPS.

I have never managed to get the GPU to measure over 71 degrees C.

I've love to swap out the CPU to an i7 (but can't figure out which is the best one I can plug in without having to mess about with Firmware or do anything to increase the stock cooling - any suggestions appreciated!).

I'd also like to swap out the stock HDD to something faster but again, I don't know what speed I can get... I'd consider Solid State too in spite of the crazy prices for them.

If anyone has actually changed their CPU and HDD, I'd be interested to know what it is, and how stable things are (and how much more performance you get).

This laptop is absolutely fantastic for the price... Even now I don't think I can get this spec for anything near the money!

gg to Acer, and thanks again to all the contributors of this thread!

Crisis disk is here and instructions on how to use it here.

    @Djini

Hi. It would be best to keep a dual core CPU so Core i7 620M or 640M would be best if you insist on Core i7. You can also use Core i5 560M or 580M which are on pair with those two Core i7s but you may be able to get them for less money.
You may need to update to most recent BIOS though- microcodes might not be recognized for some of more recent CPUs like Core i5 560M/580M and Core i7 640M.

Try to uninstall touchpad drivers and install them again or upgrade to the most recent version.
If you're using Synaptics touchpad the most recent drivers can be found in the second posts of this thread.

That would be the other way around- if couldn't use the touchpad when he was writing that could be the PalmCheck or something like that but he seems to be unable to use the touchpad unless he presses a keyboard button.

I read the previous post wrong, perhaps cause the fail a program or a virus, maybe a good solution would be to revert the computer to a previous restore point...

11.11 Catalyst is harmful to rage, still do not solve anything.
One solution is to install the new catalyst 11.11 and in the rage folder, extract the atiolgxx.dll from the catalyst preview 3,

Skyrim works fine on the ati hd 5650 native resolution, all in ultra whith FXAA enabled, and 16x af,no AA, and the shadows in medium 29-60 fps

Well, I hate to say it, but it seems that after almost one and a half year of service, today my 5740g just died all of a sudden.
First off, I've put the laptop into hibernation mode (as I do usually, instead of shutting it down) and then removed the battery (as I keep my laptop on AC power most of the time, I keep battery stashed away). Then I moved the laptop from one place to another in my home, which involved unplugging it from AC power, and after plugging the AC power back in, the darn thing would not turn back on. No led lights, no blue lighting around the power button, no nothing.
Well, i figured, maybe the power socket is faulty, which turned out not being the case, because green led on the power brick is on. Then I took my battery, that was just removed from the laptop after being fully charged, and put it back into the laptop. Nothing.
Even though The juice is reaching the laptop, and it has fully charged battery in, it would just not react at whatever I am pressing on it. My best guess is that the motherboard passed away. Therefore, tomorrow, I will be bringing it to a service center for a warranty repair, as being in EU, most of stuff here is covered for 24 months.
Just wanted to share with fellow 5740g owners with this unfortunate turn of events in my laptop's ownership. I'm planning on keeping you updated on further findings.

With ati hd 5650 o.c 650/900.pulse in ultra settings, put the shadows on medium and AA x8 turn off, instead FXAA active.
What processor you have? if you have performance problems, change distance view to high, improved 5 of 6 fps

    Acer 5740g: core i7 640m,ram 8Gb a-data, ati hd 5650, HDD black scorpio 500Gb.

well i got it to perform better by using anti-aliasing mode enhance application settings, overridind AF with 16x CCC AF and turning off fxaa..it works fine. but i didn't understand the view distance settings... u also have to make bmouseacceleration=0 in skyimpref.ini and disable checkboxes for xbox 360controller

EDIT: Whoaaa, the game looks gr8 on the big screen even on 720p. but it does'nt feel right. i'm getting nauseas in an hour of play

    Hey guys

First of all, English isn't my native language... I try my best to explain my problem.
I own this notebook, Acer Aspire 5740G, for more than 1 1/2 years.

    My specs:

    Core i5-430
    ATI HD 5650
    4 GB Ram

I noticed this problem while playing Skyrim.
I think my cpu throttles when it gets too hot (,as it should).
The problem is, it's throttling all 10 seconds. The FPS decrease is noticeable and that's very very very(!!) annoying.

    I know, it's a heat problem. BUT:

I've already cleaned the "holes"/ openings with an air duster. It helped deacrising the gpu temps. The gpu temps are stable at ~70 °C, also while playing high demanding games.

My problem is the cpu. It's getting hot. Very hot....
In idle-"mode" my cpu temps are ~60°C. But after having played a few minutes, it's getting over 100 °C, reaching 105°C and then throttling.

As you can see, the maximal frequenzy (blue line) is contantly shifting. It's getting down when my cpu slows down. Core temp also shows a decrease to 75°C.

    It's constantly jumping....

    What does that mean?

Higher CPU Speed -> higher CPU temp -> throttling -> decreased cpu speed -> lower CPU temps -> deacreased FPS -> (+5 seconds) Increasing CPU Speed -> higher CPU temp....

Is there any way resolving this problem without opening this notebook? It's such a bad case...

I wouldn't mind NOT opening this notebook.

    Best wishes.

    Welcome to the forum Barliuscha

You should open it and apply new high quality thermal paste and clean the radiator form the inside while you're at it.
The service manual is the right way to go although I had to remove the link- we can't share them here due to copyright issues.

For the players of Skyrim with ATI:

Skyrim is limited by the cpu not gpu, for all those who have problems, just rename the archive tesV.exe by Oblivion.exe (not launcher)
Use oblivion.exe directly to run the game, do not use the original launcher, And it works much better!!

In my desktop PC greatly improves!!!

Hello 5740g owners. Im a new member on this forum. I had been an owner of Acer Aspire 5740G-333G32Mn also from August 2010, but from 14 November 2011 my 5740g stopped working. My notebook stopped working suddenly, it has no power with or without battery or A/C and the the power led also have no light, in other words my notebook it has no life :). I have 2 years warranty and i send it to the authorised acer service from my country ( Romania ). It has been there for 1 week and i called at the service and telled me that the problem is from motherboard. No i will wait an answer in 1 week max. from today to find what decision has been taken. Someone had this problem already ?

I've had a friend of a friend with the same problem- Acer replaced the motherboard laptop got back to him and it turned out that ATI card was dying- it would work fine with default Windows drivers but not with AMD ones.
He sent it back again ant this time it came back working OK.

I had no problem at that DC jack, i think :) i must not saw if i had.
Send to Acer, what ? My problem, because the notebook is already in acer service :)

I think i had used the amd drivers for that ati 5650 card, but i had no problems with it. Is a good thing that it has been replaced that motherboard, i dont know if the service from here has a new motherboard or if it is produced anymore.
Thank you for your advise and sorry for my bad english. Thank you!

There are spare motheroards left in storage for such occasions.
And if there are none they will have to replace the whole laptop with a comparable new one.

This is not right, I have received 5 Portail acer 5740G in the last 3 months with different clients and the same problems in the motherboard ... I hope it's not an epidemic.
It is very easy for the graphics chip failure, can cause a short circuit on the motherboard of the computer

Consult service manual for 5738 or 5740- both can be found on the net or in your PM box if you wish (just guessing ;) )
You'll need to disassemble quite a bit to get there (apart form the screen assembly) but it's not a hard thing to do.

Sigh, after about a year and a half my laptop's finally overheating... had a couple of random shutdowns in some games :(

I had a quick look at the disassembly guide... do I REALLY need to remove the whole mobo etc to get access to the fan? Or am I reading this completely wrong?

Yes, you need to remove the motherboard also. It is pain but its worth cleaning the laptop and adding new thermal paste.

Bloody hell, what a stupid design decision...

You sound like a seasoned veteran, any tips to get me through this? Have a bit of time on my hands so am willing to give it a go

(the last laptop I did this in was an HP and that just involved removing 3 screws to get access to the fan :D).
