Try searching for a service manual in google.

Also i have question for others: Does this laptop have 1gbit ethernet or 100mbit? Seems like it is 100mbit.

My device manager says also : broadcom netlink gigabit ethernet, but the speed is nowhere near 1gbit. My work place has 10gbit speed but seems like im able to use only 100mbit :/ .

The card is 1Gbps but if you connect it to a router or a switch that has a 100mbps port it's going to automatically synchronize @100mbps.

It's like with W-Fi- you need a whole setup to be compatible otherwise it's the weak link that will limit the speed.
I use a router with Gigabit ports and it connects fine @1Gbps with an ordinary Cat5e cable.

The router/switch your notebook connected to & cable you use must support Gigabit speed. If connected to 100Mbps base switch, the link will only 100Mbps.

guys i installed win xp in one of my partitions. it was working fine except few drivers in device manager like pci bus, network controller, etc. my laptop got bsod twice after sometime of use. so i googled the bug check and i found out that bios update solves problems like these. so i used the 1.16 bios update in xp and used winflash tool to update. i know its dangerous but i had done it once before to 1.12 i think in win7 and it was fine, no problem. but during the bios update to 1.16 i got a bsod in between and now my laptopdoesnt boot. only the power lights are flashing and i can hear the fan. how shall i proceed??

Crisis disk should do the trick- link to a disk has been posted here.

BTW I've deleted the other post as cross-posting is not allowed.

Sorry for the confusion- I moved another user's post as he wanted to mod a non 5740G BIOS.

I will add the link of the crisis disk to second post before it gets lost here- it may be of some use.

I think it's ready to be used. Just the other week a 5740G user used the very same disk to recover his notebook. That said I'm not 100% sure as I have not used it myself.

Great news- it's the second time this week that 5740G gets rescued around here :)

BTW the crisis disk was 1.22 so if you need 1.28 you'll have to... :D

    now i have more problems.
1)you see when i tried installing xp today, i was getting bsod as soon as windows started. what solved it was i had to go to bios settings and change sata controler to IDE from AhCPI.
then xp installed and worked fine. i made the dual boot using easybcd. but the problem is if i try to run windows 7 with ide it gives me bsod at strtup, so each time i have to use windows 7 i have to switch back to ahcpi and for xp ive to switch to ide. is there anyway i can make it so i don't have to keep changing??

no luck so far. bricked it bigtime
EDIT: now whats happening is that. the pen drive flashes once for a micro second, then goes blank. the laptop powers off then powers on and pen drive flashes for another micro second and laptop stays blank with nothing going on. the pen drive isnt busy :-(((((

if it helps, the bios of this model costing 10euros on ebay, you can buy the chip, updated to 1.28.
Be careful, a user of a Spanish forum acer 5740G,his broken the bios to update to version 1.28, buy a new bios on ebay, and start to flash, broke for the second time the bios.
He had to buy another bios, coming update to version 1.28.

Same exact symptoms that I have encountered. I have described it in more detailed way on this thread couple of pages back. Laptop is already in repair shop, and I already know that it was accepted for warranty repair, with current status "Replacement Parts Ordered". That's all the information that is provided on my online account of repair shop's website. I'll probably pay them a visit tomorrow or so to check what actually went wrong. Somehow, I would not be surprised to find out that mainboard has died, which would neatly fall in line with the pattern that seems to be surfacing between 5740G's

Update: Well, it turns out my guess was spot on: one more case of dead motherboard

There are cisco 10gbit switches and i am using cat5e. I checked drivers settings and "speed and duplex" says that i can choose 10mbit, 100mbit. Seems like 1gbit is missing.

How many of the wires of the pach cable you are using ? For gigabit speed you need the all 8 wires of the LAN cable. Make shure you have them all at both your RJ45 connectors.

1Gbps should be missing- choosing "Auto" will give you 1Gbps if possible.
Make sure you're using the most recent drivers- there was an update a few weeks ago.

Does anyone know which wifi cards the 5740g supports? (Which are whitelisted by Acer and won't give you the dreaded blacklist boot error.)
I'm wondering if my Broadcom BCM4313 will work on it... I kinda want the Atheros AR5B93 in another laptop. :p

Possibly the ports on the switch are configured for 100Mbps speed only OR the driver is the problem. "Speed & Duplex" usually (but not necessarily) set to "Auto Negotiation".

In my country (Lithuania), we do not actually deal with Acer directly in case of warranty repair. As far as I can tell, all the warranty repair here is done by one major chain ("Servicenet") of repair shops, as it is the main official subcontractor of warranty repair services for wide array of OEM's.

The information that the laptop was accepted for warranty repair and that the "Replacement parts are ordered" was available on the aforementioned "Servicenet's" website, as once you've put your item for repair, it creates an account for you online to be able to check the status. However, the confirmation that the motherboard is dead, and replacement is arriving, I've got when I actually visited the shop couple of days back, mainly because I was curious to find out what went wrong, to be assured that all the data on laptop's hdd is safe and to get the estimation of when to expect the laptop to be fixed. They said that it should take one week for motherboard to arrive, so that would put the total time of repair at approximately two weeks. However, how long it will actually take, I'm yet to find out :)

    Hi all

I was hoping to get some help; I'm trying to connect my 740g to my amp via spdif (which was already being used by the amp for my dvd player). When I connect the cable, the laptop detects it and I change to Realtek Digital Output, and it shows by the volume bar there that sound is being output via digital.
However, there is no sound from my theatre system. I am using an amp (Yamaha rx v363) which has been running fine for several years. Any suggestions how I get the this spdif audio to work?

    Cheers

    Andrew

    Hi andy_who,

Please go to "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound" & then click "Sound". Make sure the digital output device is set to "Default Device".

Thanks, but I have already done this. I just had to fit the cable to the normal "audio jack" didnt I? It's the same output jack as the 5mm?

It still doesn't seem to work... would there be a problem with the type of output to my amp?

No need to worry- if they do use the wrong one you'll just RMA it again ;)

If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion- don't update BIOS once you get it back :p

It doesn't get past POST screen so most likely RAM or HDD although other failures are still possible.

Hello again 5740g owners. My notebook arrived from acer service yesterday. My motherboard have been replaced with a new one, same graphics :) but with version 1.28 of bios. So far it looks good, no problem in games or movies. I hope to be in warranty next time when it happens :)
