If my notebook is planning on dying on me too I would like it to go this month.
My warranty expires in March 2012.

BTW BogdanCristian- glad to see your problems solved.

I think you can extend your warranty. Here for 55 Euro you can extend your warranty with 1 year more. Mine on Aug 2012 expires. The extension of warranty must be activated one month before expires.
Thank you downloads and i hope that others solve their problems!

Acer is not really consistent- I was told that I have to extend warranty within a month from the date of purchase.
I'll check that out- maybe it's worth it.

Are there any news about installing a caddy for a SSD in place of the DVD drive?
Maybe with the BIOS upgrades we got, it is now feasible to move the HD to the caddy and mounting the SSD on the main socket...?
    Thanks

PS I actually contacted the Acer support and I got a negative answer. The thing is that I do not quite trust those tech guys, if you know what I mean...!

Hi guys and thanks for your replies about the SSD caddy.
Did you buy it from here?
Acer : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

If so, which one did you chose? I do not see listed our laptop there.
If you bought it somewhere else, can you post the link here?
    Thanks a lot

PS Why do you state it is best to have the SSD on the caddy rather the HD? Thanks again

    Hello!

After having some trouble with my fps in Battlefield 3 I've googled a lot and finally found this page. I'm experiencing severe fps problems, starting out fine first time I play the game after starting the computer running at 35-40 fps... for a couple of minutes. Then it just drops to 5-20 and stays there. I have absolutely no idea what's causing this.
    My specs are:
    i3 330m 2.13ghz
    ATI HD 5650
    2x2gb DDR3 ram

It seems that most people with this spec runs Battlefield 3 without too much trouble. I've tried terminating all other processess, putting bf3.exe and origin.exe on high priority. I've tried disabling powerplay on CCC. I've tried using D3Doverrider for vsync and tripple buffering. No matter what I try and whatever settings I have on Battlefield it just doesn't get better. Now I'm running it all on low and 1024x768 resolution just to be able to run around in the bloody game. I have 11.11 version of CCC.
I've yet to try overclocking, but since I'm not much of a computer geek I don't dare doing that without knowing exactly what I'm doing ^^

If anyone has any clue of what I could do, please help!

    Welcome to NBR davidjm.

Is your cooling system clean (dust free)?
Your CPU may be throttling. Check the temperature of the CPU when it's under load.

    Hi there, and thanks!

Now that you mention it, I haven't cleaned the cooling system in a while, and I just downloaded CPUID Hardware Monitor. Apparently my cores are on 65 degrees celsius and my graphics card on 71 degrees. Even now with just skype and chrome running.
@kizwan, VSYNC off and AA on lowest already.

I will clean the cooling system right away, I'll get back to you as soon as I'm done!

Hi, I just changed my processor again, for a core i7 720QM ... after breaking my head to cool it, after 20 minutes runing linx, the temps is only 84 degrees ,at idle 47 without changing the fan speed, thermal paste artic silver 5.
Anyone know turn off hyper treading? do not see any vantage, just makes it hotter, and the processor performs worse in all tests!!

After disassembling, cleaning, changing thermal paste and reassembling my notebook I fired up Battlefield and have now been playing for about 3 hours without temperatures not going higher than 65*C and stable fps. Oh happy days!
Thanks for the tip about cleaning, I can't believe I didn't think of that myself...

    Cheers!

Hi, well after many problems with overheating on my core i7 720QM, I found a program that really works for acer 5740G and I can change many parameters of the cpu. (I ONLY TESTED ON CORE I7 720 QM)

    Throttlestop Guide

My intention is to disable the HT,to reduce the temperature about 11 degrees and put all four cores at 2GHz.
The profile of the fan is a disaster in this processor, the panic mode start when the CPU reaches about 94 degrees, can I edit this by modifying the bios?
I'm tired of changing the fan speed using R & W utility...
I have a big problem, aida 64, everest ultimate edition 4.0 and throttllestop mark on idle 6 degrees below of cpuid hardware monitor...
    which is more reliable?
    Thanks

I was on the same dilemma as You and I found a way.....remove the CPU and buy i5-540m. The only way to keep it cool is to turn down the voltage and disable the Turbo Boost to not crash the system. I try to undervolt it, but I didn't manage to do it. If you have samo questions to me, be my guest.

I think I have now a good temperature, min 42 degrees on idle and max 82 with linx. (Cpu 100%)
the heatsink has a black plastic in the shape of core i 5 430m, this raises the temperature much, cut the plastic corners for the shape of the new processor to fit.

Memory tests with core i7 720qm (everest ultimate edition):
    Read: 15017 mb/s
    Write:11892 mb/s
    Copy:12729mb/s
    Latency:46.3 ns

    windows experience index :
    ram 5.9 (4Gb to 1336mhz) lol ?????
    processor 7.0

playing games like crysis 2 or battlefield3, cpu temperature reaches 83 degrees in winter, in the end allow the processor to 99% with 76 degrees on the same tests.
Note: performance varies in 2 or 3 fps, depending on the game.

I bought shin etsu g751, anyone know how to apply this thermal paste?

The acer service had ordered a new mobo for my 5740G(which is under warranty). its been 16 days now and the part is still pending. the customer care keeps asking me to call in few days. i've found out from the local service centre that they have not yet even received a docket number, which means they haven't even started to dispatch the mobo to the local service centre. so i called up today and they're now saying that they need to ship a mobo from taiwan. i think they're bulls$%^ing me. im thinking of registering a complaint in the consumer court. any advice guys??

Sorry to see you having such issues with your warranty repair, as in my case, it is almost a week since I've got my 5740g back after it's mobo was replaced under warranty. It took them one and a half week to diagnose the problem, have new mobo shipped and having it replaced. Well, it works just like it should... For now :)

Now that I have free time I'm testing the theme of improving ventilation to assemble a core i7 920 extreme. Anyone know if I can change my acer heatskin another similar model?
The temperature in the room is 21 degrees and my cpu playing crysis 2 reaches 88 degrees...this summer my pc will be a toaster

Solved, the heat sink surface of my acer is really bad, is smooth after sanding. Maximum temps now 82 degrees for the processor and 72 for ati 5650.

The technique is called "lapping". Basic tool for lapping is sand paper. If the heatsink surface is not smooth, heat conductivity will not be at best. You can use sand paper to make it smooth.

One question: do the settings you change here revert to defaults after you reboot? I can't seem to keep mine as they are.

values are changed to default when you reboot the pc, according to my tests for the higher rpm fan write 60 line 90x04, (first in the line 90x03 write 14 for manual speed), and between 70 and 80 well ventilated and has less noise

I'm sorry but do not take any pictures,i see a lot of information about this theme in google.I put the thermal paste on the processor,to assembling the heat sink, the surface processor make very poor contact in some areas. Put around 2 millimeters of paste in that area but in the center is not entered half millimeter, always had a core 10 degrees more hot.I use a smooth piece of wood and very fine sandpaper for metal.
30 minutes after sanding the surface of the heat sink was smooth

edited: after to play crysis 2 for two hours, raising the laptop with a book on the back and the fan in manual mode with the configuration 7A, the maximum temperatures are 72 degrees for the cpu and gpu 68 for gpu!!!!!! room temps 23 degrees.

hi guys. something weird happened today.its been more than 20 days since acer has ordered a new mobo for my 5740g i5 430m with ati5650. the part delivery status is still awaited acc to acer website. but i just got a call from acer service centre (local one) which has told me that a a new replacement laptop available for me:its 5742g. but when i asked about specs it turns out it has nvidia420m, i3 processor and 320gb hard disk.so i told him my specs are much better than that. (i5,500gb, 5650m). so he called after an hour and told me that he would put 1 gb of my ram into the system and also swap processors with my current laptop and also the hard disk and the gpu. i was surprised hearing all this and i've a bad feeling about this. meanwhile he has asked me to email him my invoice and specs to claim replacement. and he has also told me that the replacement is brand new from the store but it won't be boxed.what is this???

Review Acer Aspire 5742G Notebook (GT 540M) - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

^^In the review, specification a little bit different; GT540M & i5. They can swap RAM, HDD & processor into new notebook but GPU will not possible because it's integrated, unless Aspire 5742G also have sub-model with HD5650. Anyway, just make sure you didn't ended up with HD5470.

Yes, the one service center want to give you as replacement have i3, GT420M & 320GB. Aspire 5742G have several sub-model, each have slightly different specification. One of the sub-model is reviewed by notebookcheck; i5 & GT540M.

GT540M is slightly faster than HD5650. Anyway, make sure you get similar or better specification. If HD5650 not available, demand for 5742G with GT540M.

5570G? You mean 5750G, right? That is SB notebook.

SB stands for Sandy Bridge which is next gen compared to Arrandale we have.
That means they are unlikely to agree to give you a replacement that is quite a bit faster.

Yeah but I don't think that would go for that- computers get cheaper all the time. What that are obliged to do is replace your notebook with a comparable unit. And by comparable I mean size, performance, battery time, weight etc- not the price.

Based on a price you could replace 5740 with an ultra-portable claiming it costs the same.
