I have my GPU bios OCed ... but back when I used a software it was Trixx because it overclocks the 3D clocks only and lets the laptop change automatically to other profiles as if it weren't overclocked (2D,UVD,...) so no fuss of manual switching

 

Hey guys. Can I install Ubuntu 11.10 (latest) x64 bit on Aspire 5740G ? I mean what about the drivers ? Anyone try installing this OS ?

 

they gave me a 5745g as replacement with nvidia 330m and i5 430m. guess i got downgraded:-(. how much fps will i lose in games??

 

Sorry, this graphics card is in the range of the old ati hd 4650,only supports DirectX10.1 what type of dedicated memory it brings?, ddr2, gdr3 or ddr3, the performance varies greatly

 

hey ka4o_pi4. I've installed latest Ubuntu on my Acer and everything seemed to run just fine. Ubuntu came with the open source driver but if You want to get proprietary fglrx driver, all You have to do is to install it from Ubuntu repositories (fastest way). Go to System/Administration/Additional Drivers, choose "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release update)", restart, and it is done. Cheers.

 

What about other hardware ? Is it like the Win 7 - automatically find the driver for them or no ? I never run Linux in my life

EDIT: I've just try to install Ubuntu 11.10 with windows on the same disk partition, but in the end of the install I get an error and it stop. Any idea why ? I'll try again now.

i have not yet gone to accept the laptop. the 5650m is 128 bit right??

 

They're trying to pawn off an older slower machine. Gripe and moan til they give you something with at least a 5650 or GT335 or better. Preferably a 6650 or GT540M etc. Fact is the 5740G was a great machine. See if they have an old 3820TG in stock to trade you. Get one with at least a 5650 and it'll be pretty similar to the 5740G in a smaller form factor and with switching graphics. Don't settle for a machine that's worse performance wise than what you bought originally.

 

the two graphics cards are 128 bits, but the nvidia gt330m not support DirectX 11,only 10.1 is a bit worse than the ati hd 4650

 

Good morning all. I have a strange issue with the atheros WiFi. When I wake my laptop from a sleep mode 8 by 10 times it never "see" my home wireless network. All other devices (mobile, kindle, other laptop) see and connect to the network. I have to disable/enable the wifi adapter 5-6 times to start seen the network. This happens in windows, in Ubuntu no. I try to put the last driver from the first page. Can you help me ?

 

New Wi-Fi driver is a good idea. Do you have any problem installing it?

 

Yes, I install the last driver (found it on the firest page).... still have the problem. I try with driver sweaper, but the program did't see the WiFi driver. Any other idea ?

 

I OC my GPU to 650/850 MhZ for Battlefield 3 and my GPU gets 90°C...is that bad for my graphic card or till which degree could i go?

 

It's not dangerous but it's too high by 5740G's standards.

i griped and moaned but they said that they can only give the one with i5-430m and gt330m. they cannot give another lappie than that. is the gt330m that bad????? this new laptop is much slimmer and lighter though when i look at it online.they also told me replacement mobo is not available and this is all they can do. i originally had a choice between ati 5650 and gt330 m one year back, but after reading this forum i got the 5650 one a year ago. any suggestions?

seems the shader clocks and memory clocks are much faster than the 5650

 

You should compare the core clock not the shader one- for 330M it's 575MHz.

There's no point in those comparisons though- you got what you got- try to make the most of it.

 

i have not accepted it yet. i was confirming whether theyre truthful about the card because the control panel in posted image said directx version 11, but its a 10.1 dx card, so i was confused. so i guess its not as bad as i feared it to be as the 5650 is @ 550mhz.

 

OK. This is common mistake. That is the version of DirectX installed in windows, not the card capability. The card itself only support DirectX 10.1.


This sound fishy I tell ya. They try to con you by giving inaccurate information? They intentionally hide some information in the picture. They should show you like this, which show you the card DirectX capability (DirectX support) in the right box:-


Furthermore, in my country drop point or service center will try to fixed it on site but if it is not possible, they will ship it back to factory or main service depot.

-the hdd they gave me has been used for 7750hours acc to crystaldskinfo
-i think there is something wrong with the ram they gave me. according to cpu-z it says i have 4gb ddr3 ram @ 532.1mhz and fsb ratio is at 4:16. slot no.1 has pc310700(667mhz) and slot no.3 has pc3-8500f(533mhz)

my ram is giving just 5.9 on windows experience index. earlier it used to be much more. is there some way to bring it back to 1066mhz????

 

actually running @ 533 means that it is 1066 & WEI will never go beyond 5.9 for RAM unless you go past 4 gigs of RAM

well the laptop panel says : core-i5-430m, 3gb ddr3, nvidia geforce 310M , 320gb hdd. but they have put the 330m, 4gb ram and 500gb hdd later in that lappie.either they put my old hdd or another old hdd.

what about the smart status should i check? crystaldisk says status good.

It's probably not new- it seems to have been built from parts.
You can't change GPU on those units so you have a motherboard from a different unit than a chassis and a HDD from a different unit.
Also two different RAM sticks suggest the same thing.

Post SMART attributes here. Software that analyses them automatically works with thresholds so assuming you have 256 spare sectors on your HDD and 10 re-allocated ones you still have 246 ones to spare- meaning it's far enough from a threshold to label it OK.
Some apps mark it "OK", some "watch" and some rare apps mark it properly as a serious problem.
That's obviously just an example but it's meant to show why it's better to analyze smart status yourself.

 

It should be 533MHz. It's DDR memory, so 533 x 2 = 1066MHz. There you go.

One module is PC3-10700 (667mhz) and another module is PC3-8500 (533mhz). So, the PC3-10700 will operate at 533Mhz since CPU & another RAM only support 533MHz. They're running in dual-channels.

its saying on wei that i have 4.00GB(3.68GB usable)RAM. why is that? a 64-bit should use all right?

 

The Intel HD Graphics steals some of the memory. It's completely normal.

gaming is not at all good on this lappie. gt330m sucks. can't get decent frames in brotherhood which i could play above 40fps with 5650m. does that diy thing for external desktop gpu work with hm55 mobo??? anyone tried it??

 

Screw that, start a letter writing campaign to Acer corporate over this VERY shoddy treatment you've received.

 

Over 1,5 months without lappy and at the end you was given some used crap. I have no words... It's regrettable how the shop/service screwed you up.

 

the GT330 is indeed a significantly weak GPU compared to the HD5650 ... try to overclock it to the utmost stable clocks possible & see where that gets u

 

If you live in india, NEVER EVER BUY ACER PRODUCTS.HORRIBLE SERVICE. just go for dell, might be 100 $ more but atleast you're safe with good service

 

Can someone tell me if I buy a HDD Caddy for replacing the optical drive do I need older BIOS ? I have the last now 1.28. Also, is it true that the SSD have much more short life compared to good old HDD ?

i've replaced my HDD from this Notebook against an SSD, because after a while my windows was damn slow and laggy (very slow start, sometimes it doesn't boot up and i have to reinstall my windows :/ ). I thought the reason was the APM on this HDD's. So i bought an SSD and now all is running fine.

Now i found the "wdidle3" tool from WD, which deactivates the APM on some WD harddrives. Did someone of you heard of this or tried it out? I used the "Search this Thread" function, but it found nothing.

MOre MIseries: its not even been 3 days since i got my new replacement and its refuses to boot!!! ! was just surfing the net when i got a black screen saying something and i pressed ok and poof got a bsod. now when i switch it on i get no display. power leds keep blinkin including dvd drive and after few mins i can here the fan spinning real FAST and loud. whats up with that??]]
EDIT: it boots now but i get memory_management bsod. i guess its due to the mismatched ram they've given me.

 

I'm sorry to hear that, garfield, but we (at least: 'me') can not help you in any way (your problems are now even not 5740G related :/)You have to deal with it by yourself. If you are unable to solve the issue with service support you've been offered, call Acer international customer support, ask lawyer, write to office of consumer protection or something, but don't just let them play tricks on you.
You've ended up in a big and awful crap and I have no doubts that if you want your 5740G back or comparable replacement, you must sacrifice a lot of your time and effort.

i fixed it. their new ram was faulty. works fine with my old 2 gig stick. @ sir ferdek: i appreciate ur thoughts and thats what i really wanna do. but seeing how it was my fault in the first place for frying my mobo i don't really have the heart to plough through those procedures. anyways my laptop is pretty new with switchable graphics and thinner and lighter, only drawback is gt330m. i can live with that

 

@rondera Yes i used that WD tool and made the timeout time the max(5 min) and now i hear no clicking sounds every few sec while HDD is idle and my LoadCycleCount value almost never increases.

There's a list of them in that article, hope they're not old and outdated. Keep us apprised of your progress, I hope you can get something decent, sounds like they replaced a broken laptop with a slightly less broken laptop. You should really be getting a new machine with similar specs instead of some old pile of parts they have laying about.

why in all games in this laptop i have very low saturation of colors? Everything is very faded. Dou you have the same? Of course when i change in CCC saturation is ok, but in default settings is horrible.

Hi all! And again about raising the voltage on the graphics core. I was using ATI Tray Tulsa to lower the voltage on the graphics core up to 0.8 V. Can drop down to 0.5 V. Now the question is why you can reduce stress and improve more than 1.0?
