I can't use my recovery partition for extra space. I don't have the orignal install of windows that came on my laptop and I want the extra 12+gb.
I have deleted the recovery partition and tired formatting. I tried to merge with c and I even re-sized the recovery to nothing but I still can't resize c with the free space.
After reading now I probably should have kept it, but I have already formatted it multiple times. -
Don't try to merge it. Delete it entirely and then expand C:\ using free space that will be there.
-
I delete the partition then apply changes. I select c then resize partition and I can't change it.Attached Files:

You can't merge it. They are not one after the other. Maybe you can do it with AcronisDiskDirectorHome.

Have any of you upgraded the HDD to SSD? I am now using Agility 3 120G connected to the primary SATA port. The windows boot up time is a bit disappointing at 38s (from BIOS until the computer settles down). My BIOS version is v1.16. Yes, you got it, I am using optibay to house my original HDD in the optical drive bay. I wonder if anyone manages to get your boot time under 20s. If so, please share with us your tweaks.
Also, I am looking at this 3rd party battery which can possibly boost the battery life to 5 hours ( http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?id...cm=1003.640.1110.3-1&prt=1329637019488&prc=1). At the moment, I am struggling with choosing to replace the battery or buy a Macbook Air 11" (128GB SSD version). The choice is even harder given that I am budget-constrained and I just recently upgraded my 5740G with a SSD... Note: after replacing the battery, this rig will be close to 3kg and will make my morning traveling to school almost like a session in the gym doing some weight lifting...
What will you do if you were I?
Thousand thanks. -
I bought a similar one. It's double the size so it makes the back of the notebook go up which is nice- improved airflow and typing is more comfortable (at least for me)
Battery time depends on your usage patterns- I keep my CPU locked at the lowest frequency and screen at the lowest setting (or a bit brighter than that depending on ambient lighting)- 5 hours is easily achievable- in tact i get far more than that 6 h 30 minutes seems to be the most typical battery run time for me although you may get higher or lower than that.
Poor photo above shows my new battery compared to the standard one.
While it adds a bit of weight (250 grams or so) it's totally worth it in my opinion. -
-
about the battery: mine is almost dead, and I'm trying to find a replacement. The thing is, mine hast a 10.8v rating, and every battery that fits this model has a 11v rating.
I've read that it actually is important, but I'm running out of options: either I buy it, or stay plugged to the wall.
where should I look?
thanks for any advice! -
Is there a way to have the WiFi off by default when turning on the laptop?
I always have to push theWiFi button to turn it off when I am plugged to my LAN cable to avoid energy waste. And it is really annoying. The LauchManager does not provide any option on that as well as the BIOS and driver.
Thanks -
you can disable it from windows, around the network managment part in control panel.
I did it with the ethernet in its time, as I only used wireless. -

i have big problem with sound record. The quality when i use internal mic is very very bad. I bought external mic (with headphones) and quality is better but still poor.
In settings i have:
levels +10db (when i change to 0 is too quite )
in extension i have 2 options (default both are chekd)-Noise suppression and echo cancellation.
I tried everything-any configurations options but still-quality is bad. Eny suggestions? -
I really wonder why optionals are not always off by default... -
Hey guys, I have a problem.....whenever I overclock using MSI afterburner or even AMD GPU clock tool and then open CPUID HWmonitor(tried wid v1.18,1.19 and also openhardwaremonitor-v0.4.0-beta) after that...the gaming performance becomes even lesser than on stock clocks (550/750).
In GPUZ it shows the overclocked clocks but still the performance is low....did somebody encounter such problems.....? Is there a solution to this ..(other than dont open HWmonitor...i want to see the temps while gaming)?
Or maybe can someone tell how to BIOS overclock the card......?
Please...Any help will be appreciated ....thanks in advance...... -
All about overclocking the CPU on the aspire 5740G on clockers SLG8SP585 / ICS9LRS3197, post #1144. All up MotoVlad.
-
SLG8SP585? Can you translate it to proper English? If possible ask the original author for permission to translate & re-post here.
-
Is "Seagate Momentus 2.5" 7200rpm" (16mb buffer) good HDD? Because seems like my WD is failing(loud crackling sounds, very slow lately - going to run badsectors finder later)
-
kizwan, the author registered on our forum - MotoVlad. He knows English better than me
-
Thanks. I found him in PLL Pinmod thread.

at the top left corner, my 5740g gets hot...i went to the guide of cooling the laptop on this site but i need to get instructions on how to open up the laptop so i can clean the inside...is there a guide on how to do this?...
also i need a recommendation on a cooling pad...and anything else to keep the temp in check....sorry i could not go search the entire thread...
thanks in advance, gurus... -
Use HWMonitor or similar software to check the actual temperature.
You can use can air (aka gas duster) to clean the vents without dismantling the notebook. If it doesn't help google "aspire 5740 service guide"- service guide has step by step disassembly instructions with photos. -
To communicate with you use Google translator -
I (used to) speak Russian. At the moment I'm very busy at work but if you wish I may post an English translation (with MotoVlad's premission).
-
Well, I will try to help with translation.
In looking for is a laptop not working, this is my main computer, so the forum will rarely, need to replace the cooling system.
I will contact Vovik_MC , perhaps it will help you if you want -
I think I understand your Guide at the Russian Acer forum a little bit. My notebook also have SLG8SP585 clock generator. I already checked the schematic for my notebook. They're (the clock generator pinout & connections) roughly the same. Rep+
-
I see that there all bad know English
By the way, the site http://www.microsofttranslator.com/ is slightly better than translate.google.com
-
I think the essence of modification you realize. All you need to do is in the pictures.
While working with the program setpll, described on a more proper English -
@MotoVlad....first of all, +rep for you....I gave setpll a shot without any Hardware modifications.......but my laptop froze as soon as I entered the command setpll 9lrs3197 135 .....I used your 9lrs3197.lut since myPLL.lut (which I created following this thread....:-
SetFSB Update - XOTICPC Forums ) myPLL.lut was not reporting any clocks......I just gave it a try ...and after this ...setpll 9lrs3197 135...my laptop froze....was not responding and power button for forced shutdown was also not working....so had to unplug and remove the battery......Any help will be appreciated..... -
I wrote a detailed 3197 will work only after the hardware modification.
Ok, we come again to my post # 1144 and download the attached file below, it does not require hardware modification. -
Hey guys. Did you know the best WiFi card for this laptop (as5740) ? I think to buy Intel Centrino 6300 but I don't know if it is compatable ?
-
It is compatible but it won't be any improvement over Intel 6200 unless you own or plan to buy a three stream router.
That said it is a good card indeed- just make sure you're not buying Lenovo OEM one. -
I have Lincsys WRT320N and TP-LINK WR842ND routers (now the TP is sending wirelessly signal) Both of them are MIMO 300 Mbit/s. Also my WiFi card is the original one in the laptop Atheros AR5B93. The reason I look to change the card is that I'm in the same room with the router TP-LINK with openWRT and the laptop is connected at 180-240 MBit/s... And it's changing all the time...
-
Use inSSIDer to survey your neighborhood and adjust the channel accordingly. It's most likely not Wi-Fi card related although it's a cheap upgrade so there's no reason not to do it.
Compare prices though- 6200 is the same thing as 6300 as far as your setup is concerned (dual band 300mbps) -
I'm experiencing some very unusual behavior. I get too much video tearing when watching films, both on VLC player and Windows Media Player. However, if I overclock, the tearing stops, and if I underclock, the tearing stops. What's up with the video tearing during default GPU clocks?
This particular situation only applies to video/movies, not games. -
Hello
I bought an SSD drive, since the 5400 has failed 3 times in the past 4 months.
And now i wonder how can i increase the speed of it?
It can do ~550mb/s based on the manufacture page.
But i get ~200mb/s only in ahci mode. Sata I if i'm correct? -

Hi, I have an SSD as a primary drive with W7 and a caddy with my old HDD. I have installed the new W8 CP but when I boot with both drives connected the system would not start. After bios, the screen stays black, with tiny coloured dots appearing on top of it. And the HDD keeps on reading without properly booting (when I then force power off).
I have both W7 and W8 partitions actives.
Installing the caddy on another laptop though I have no problems whatsoever, and the PC boots into W8 (being the CD/DVD drive having priority in that bios).
Do you have an idea of why this happens on my Aspire then?
Many thanks -

Hello everyone! I have a simple question. I tried my best to find an answer on google, but I came across little to no information about this. I have an Acer aspire 5740g and I'm having problems with my hard drive (WD6400BEVT-22A0RT0). I want to replace it, and I've come across some decent options. My question is this: would a sata2 hard drive be compatible with my laptop? Thank you for your time.
-
Welcome to NBR.
Yes it will work fine. BTW your current HDD is SATA II. -
It is? That's pretty weird. When I looked up the specs for my hard drive, one website listed that it was SATA. I've also seen something like SATA300. I'm not an expert with this stuff clearly
Thank you so much for your answer! -
Hi all, today I BIOS OVERCLOCKED my card....and its working awesome......
New clocks......660/980 @1.0Volt .....Default 550/750
(for just to be safe i did not go beyond that because mine artifacts at 680/995)
Since this valuable Information is spread out all over .... so i decided to put everything in one place .....
Steps to BIOS Overclock....ATI 5650
with PHOENIX/INSYDE/EFI/DELL BIOS (ACER 5740G)
!!!!!!!..............DO AT YOUR OWN RISK...........!!!!!!
First of all CREATE the BIOS RECOVERY Disk......CRISIS DISK AS DOWNLOADS already mentioned.....
http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/480992-acer-laptop-phoenix-bios-bios-mod-request.html
For acer 5740g
AS5740G CRISDISK - BIOS v1.22.zip
Softwares required.....
i) RBE 128
Download TechPowerUp Radeon Bios Editor v1.28 | techPowerUp
ii) Phonex Tool
Download phoenixtool196.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way
iii) USB Disk Storage to create a cmd bootable pendrive
usb_format.rar
iv) Your BIOS file...... xxxxxx.wph or xxxxxx.exe
Download from the respective support site for your laptop....
For acer 5740g....
http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...ep3=Aspire 5740G&OS=721&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6
Create a BACKUP copy of the ORIGINAL BIOS files just in case the modded one gets screwed...
1. open (run as administrator) PhoenixTool.exe
2. Browse to the BIOS file...... xxxxxx.WPH or some xxxxxx.exe
(for acer 5740g , it is in the.... BIOS_Acer_1.28_Windows\DOS\BIOS\JV50128.WPH
3. click Advanced
and add check " Allow user to modify other modules" and
also check " No SLIC" in the lower right box
4. click GO
5. A messagebox apears "You can now make manual alterations to any module in the DUMP directoy"
DON'T CLICK OK as yet
6. Open (run as administrator) RBE 128....
Load your vBIOS
%pathtoyourbios%\dump\xxxxxx.ROM
For 5740g
BIOS_Acer_1.28_Windows\DOS\BIOS\dump\OPROM00.ROM
(vBIOS.....For acer 5740g
HD5650=OPROM00.ROM
HD5470=OPROM01.ROM)
For acer TimelineX 3820TG
HD6560=OPROM02.ROM
HD5650=OPROM01.ROM)
(Phoenix tool will extract individual files of the BIOS file in the "Dump" folder which is there inside the BIOS folder)
7. Create a BACKUP of the VBIOS file (OPROM00.ROM) first
8. Alter your bios
Go directly to Clocks Settings Tab
I recommend change only CLOCK info 00 values as the overclocked values....leave the rest ....as powerplay will be at play....lol
Do NOT change anything else except clocks.....
9. click SAVE and select the original file (OPROM00.ROM) from the list and OVERWRITE it.....so that it saves the modded file as the same name as the original file by replacing the original file...
10. NOW ...on the PhoenixTool messagebox click OK
it will create a new BIOS file.....xxxxxxxx.wph or xxxxxxx.exe
Rename it as the SAME name as your original bios......
For acer 5740g....for 1.28 BIOS
new file .... JV50128_SLIC.WPH
Rename it as JV50128.WPH (which is the original filename)
Now you have Successfully created the Modded BIOS file......
11. Create the CRISIS Disk using the new MODDED BIOS
Plug in a USB Drive and then open (run as administrator) WINCRIS.exe (present in the CRISIS disk download)
Click Start....
Replug the drive and copy all the Files in the drive and paste in a new folder
(3 files......BIOS.WPH , MINIDOS.SYS , PHLASH16.exe )
Now replace the BIOS file (BIOS.WPH) present in the new folder with the MODDED one .... JV50128.WPH
12. Create a bootable USB drive using USB Disk Storage Format....
Plug in the USB drive and then Open (run as administrator) the USB_Format
Change the Filesystem to FAT32.....
Check Create a DOS Bootable disk
Browse to "boot98se" folder (present in the usb_format folder itself)
& click "Start" to create your DOS bootable drive
After that COPY all the files inside the new folder (in step 11....which contains the MODDED BIOS) to this bootable DOS USB drive.....
Now you are ready to flash the New MODDED BIOS
Make sure of the following things:
Battery is plugged in and charged to 100%
Switch ON the AC Power cable as it will be required during flashing
Remove any CD/DVD and sd cards and USB devices (except the bootable flash drive)...
After Shutting Down the laptop ......plug in the Bootable usb drive....Switch On AC power....press the Power button ...
Select to BOOT from the USB Drive.....then it will start a command prompt
type the following command......
phlash16.exe /x /s /mode=3 JV50128.WPH
After Finishing it will automatically Restart the laptop.....to the MODDED BIOS
ENJOY.....!!!!!!

Hey Guys!
I have heat issues.
Maybe its because my fan is blocked, but even if i out something underneath my laptop,to raise it up,thus exposing the vent holes for better cooling,it still gets pretty hot,and even if i turn my fan speed up,its still a lil bit warmer than usual.
Any ideas?
btw,i do have amd gpu clock tool, and i did overclock it a bit,but it wasnt always this hot,it just started about 2 weeks ago.
