For starters use canned air to blow the dust out of the vent.
    What temps are you getting?

of course now its pretty cool, ive only played some minecraft and browsing

i havent checked temp when it was hot but it was prolly at least 65-70c

but i didnt use anned air i just blew into it myself, while in sleep mode of course, with the fan not working.

well its cooler now its 52 degrees but now it sometimes makes ratlling noises, but i dont think this is a very good premanent fix. gonna send it to a repair shop, get it dissasembled and cleaned, maybe even replacethe fan.

at one time,i was playing minecraft, which for some reason REALLY heats my acer up,and it was so hot to the point where it was impossible to touch it for more than 10 seconds,i srsly thought it was going to melt.

but my acer is holding up,and except the fan being a silly goose, and the arm rest plastic getting worn out, everything is perfectly fine.

Hi to all. I'm watching movies from the laptop to LED TV using HDMI cable and everything's fine, but I also have 5.1 system (analogue) and I want to have 5.1 on it. How can I do that, is it possible ?

It's not possible as far as I knows since the codec used in 5740G is Realtek ALC272 which is two channel only.

What about the SPDIF next to the microphone ? Is it digital ? OK, what about the digital audio out (coaxial) on the TV can I use it to send 5.1 audio to rca ?

EDIT: The other way... with external USB 5.1 sound card ? That way will works, isn't ?

Hey Downloads, thanks for the rep but just for confirmation, can you please tell the procedure of flashing the BIOS in DOS mode using a bootable USB disk ?
I just want to know if what I did was correct or not ?
I got 3 files which were created by the CRISIS disk software WINCRIS :
    3 files......BIOS.WPH , MINIDOS.SYS , PHLASH16.exe
then replaced the BIOS.WPH file with the Modded BIOS file : JV50128.WPH
Then I made a bootable USB disk using usb_format software. After that,
I copied all the 3 files in the bootable USB disk and Booted into the USB Drive & typed the command :
    phlash16.exe /x /s /mode=3 JV50128.WPH
After Finishing it automatically Restarted and the new BIOS was successfully loaded.
Is this method correct for flashing in DOS ?
    Any help will be appreciated.
And one more thing, will our ATI 5650 support voltages above 1.0V like say 1.05V or 1.1V just like the ATI 5730 @1.1V
    or atleast 1.05V ?
Some people with ATI 5650 attained voltages till 1.12V by just using Sapphire Trixx only

    ATI 5650 : 15-19W
    ATI 5730 : 26W
ATI Mobility Radeon? HD 5700 & HD 5600 Series Graphics Cards from AMD
As posted by Seeker_moc , can the voltage regulators squeeze another atleast 0.05V the main rail....? Is it possible to attain atleast 1.05V ?

It works only on some notebooks and it seems 5740G is not one of those.
I've tested it and it didn't work for me and if I remember correctly one more 5740G user confirmed it doesn't work.

    Greetings users of Notebook Review.

I'm a notebook owner from North Italy and i wish to express my appreciations for making this post wich is veeery useful for the owners of the 5740G.

In particular, i wish to thank downloads for suggesting the use of QuietHDD wich solved that annoying "minifreeze" problem.

In any case i'm writing now regarding a little concern about the temperatures of my pc.

My notebook is the 5740G with CPU i7 620M, GPU Mobility 5650 1 gig and 4 gig of ram.

I've bought the computer in the spring of 2010 and since now i've never checked the temperatures with programs like HWmonitor, speedfan etc., but seeing that recently the speed of my fan has become a bit noisy i've decided to begin to think seriously about the matter, especially since my last notebook died from overheating.

With a room temperature of usually 21-22c, checking with HWmonitor i've seen that the idle temperature of my CPU is usally 44-47c, while the GPU usually sits at 48-50.

Under heavy gaming load the CPU can reach 58-60c while the GPU is far hotter, reaching 70-71c but usually never exceeding this temperature.

I'm using a Kraun cooling pad with two fans, but i'm considering of changing it for a more effective one like the Aeolus or someting like that.

Considering that summer is approaching and in my zone the temperatures can become veeery high should i be worried about the actual temps of my pc or are they reasonable?. And at wich temperature should i expect to see the components of my pc being seriously damaged?.

Many thanks in advance for your attention.

    Hi and welcome to NBR

These temps seem reasonable and those under load seem even a bit low (possibly thanks to the cooling pad).
Still you should use canned air (aka gas-duster) to clean the vents periodically. That will stop the dust from accumulating in the radiator area.

If your fan gets noisy in a mechanical way ;) it may mean you should start looking for another one. Fans die on you from time to time for no reason. A used one bought on e-bay would do. If it doesn't sound like it's gonna die on you soon just monitor the situation- maybe try to find a cheap used one on an online auction- just as a spare.

If on the other hand the sound is just more pronounced that means either dust have accumulated between the radiator leafs (again gas-duster) or the thermal compound needs replacing.
Start with thorough cleaning and see if that changes something.

Thank you downloads... your suggestions are most useful.

I think that maybe i've found the reason of the more pronounced sound of the fan and the GPU temperature...

From what i've read around the latest Catalyst drivers 12.3 are causing some problems to notebook's users in making their GPU run a bit hotter than normal..... and considering that the GPU is close to the CPU maybe the heat is more pronounced in both the pieces....

For now i'll continue to use the canned gas and wait for my new cooling pad wich should be more efficient in keeping low the temperatures.

Of course if with the arrival of summer i'll see the temps springing up to 90-100 degrees i'll give the pc for a complete dedust-repasting and check.

    Thank you very much!

New Atheros Wi-Fi driver v 10.0.0.45 added to the update post.
It's a major update not only because it bumps version number to v10 but mainly because it improves throughput dramatically at least for me.

Average transfer rate measured (700MB file downloaded from NAS) was 14MB/s as shown by TeraCopy.

    Hey guys new poster here,
My 5740g-6979 shows a black screen with blinking cursor on boot up. I have the 3 recovery disks that I created earlier. I should try and boot up with disk 1 right? Because when I do, nothing happens (still same screen). I went into setup, and it does show my cd/dvd rom as no.2 option on boot.
    Any help will be appreciated.

edit:I changed the dvd drive to no.1 boot and it worked.

Went through the all 3 recovery disks and still get black screen, blinking cursor after booting from hd. Does that mean my hd is dead? I tied both partial restore and then full restore. Can I install a newer hd with the same recovery disks I have?
    Thanks,

You'd have to prepare HD for those recovery disks (there's an Acer app that does that somewhere).
Before you start searching for a new HDD- please boot Linux form USB and check SMART status and post it here.
Something doesn't add up here- if the HDD was failing it wouldn't have worked properly during the restore either so the recovery process would have failed.

It's a good reason to replace the HDD though.
With 24 re-allocated sectors it should still work but not for long so you may replace it now rather than wait until it dies.

Installed new HDD, ran the acer format, ran the 3 recovery disks. When "setup is starting services" started, I got the ole "Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation." :(
Didn't have any probs until then.
    Suggestions?

If you have a retail Windows 7 disk, ditch the recovery ones and do a clean install an then use drivers from Acer support site and/or from the second post of this thread.
eRecovery is in no way better than a clean install- it's supposed to be faster and less troublesome which it isn't in your case.

EDIT: If you use a retail DVD and a product key that's on the sticker on the bottom of the notebook you may be forced to activate Windows by phone. OEM ones do not activate via Internet.

I know I was suggesting borrowing some from work or from a friend.
You can also check the legal download threads (ISO from MS) that we have somewhere on the forum. Mind you not all language versions are supported.

You can also try the to run recovery one more time. Third time lucky? ;)

Hi. Someone made some cooling mod to this laptop ? After a few hours of play Crysis 2 with i5-540m and 5650 (700/900) I have max temp 80 deg. on the CPU and 75 deg. on the GPU. Is those temps good ?

Yes these temps are good- no need to do anything about it.
CPU temperature even seems pretty low for under-load one.

Hey guys!...one of the 5740 owner here too >_<
recently, my pc been over heating nor something else is happening with my laptop.

I've been reading one posts by one posts in this thread, got my P button glowing...set fan to 100% and etc.

But still my GPU and CPU is extremely hot.
I have used two types of thermal compound one is Tuniq TX-2
and another one is Arctic MX4
I don't think there's healing time herre or something.
I applied quite a big lump though, but i wonder does it actually affect the performance?

I was not sure, but the laptop was quite cool before i rubbed off the old thermal compound, thought wanna change and it'll be better off with the new one but the result was quite disappointed.
I changed the thermal compound 3 times already by today. It seems that the result are the same

Running Prime95 100% load, gives me about 98 ~ 101 celcius temperature for the CPU and GPU is runnig idle at 80C++ above.
I was wondering what was all the cause of this i wonder? I have tighten the screw for the CPU and GPU as well.
While my Laptop running idle, lowest was 50 and 51 for core 1 and 2
    While at 100% is 98 ~ 101 for both.
My fan speed is at 100% as well, with my laptop cooler pad which costs about 40 USD++ aluminium one.

Seems to serve me quite well, but right now,it's really really bad.
Do help me out guys :D ...thanks! cheers
Been trying out prime95 after 8 hours of application, well its still the same result bad temperature

    Processor : Core i5 520m
    Rams : 4GB x2 DDR3 1333mhz
    Graphic card : ATI HD5470
    HDD : 500GB toshiba 5400rpm

BTW~ the results for temperate i have used is Core Temp & Real Temp for CPU
    GPU-Z for GPU

I have another question, well one post is too long i decided to post another post too.
I was wondering about the hard drive, it seems to have reach about 40C idle and sometimes up to 55C too. I am beginning to think that it's the causeo f the hard drive heat that causes itself to have trouble.
I mean my hard drive have failed already, replaced one and it's running that hot still.

I was wondering why the placing for the hard disk is totally different for the other models, while this one is in the middle.
Is there a way to keep it cool? ...i have no idea what to do right now.
The whole laptop is quite hot though

The problems is not HDD placement which is correct but the fact that your notebook is overheating which results in HDD being unnecessarily heated up.

Mine is always between 40 and 43*C. If you manage to solve overheating issues your HDD temperature will go down on its own.

Hmm i see, but i couldn't really find out the problem with the heating though.
When i see the fan is blowing air out right,i couldn't really feel strong winds though, but when i touch near the plastic its extremely hot, i was wondering is it the thermal paste too thick? or, was it the screw isn't proper? ...
I remembered that i screw it quite tight in the reverse way from 7 to 1.

Just wondering why is this happening...hmm
Did you came across to this problem before? ...hehe sorry for the questions :) quite curious though

Thermal paste shouldn't be too thick. You wrote that you had applied a "lump" of it- it should be as thin as possible.

Old school (desktop derived) theory is that you should place an amount similar to a grain of rice in the middle of the core and use a credit card to spread it evenly.
With notebooks however you may use even less thermal paste (the core is small) and not necessarily place it in the middle.
Usually you can't swipe easily in every direction due to cramped space so place it on the side you'd start and drag it to the other side (i.e. if you can only swipe to the left apply some thermal paste near the right edge of the core and then drag the card to the left spreading it evenly and in as thin layer as possible)

Yeah I had to download some extra drivers to get my keyboard volume buttons to work. Besides that, all info was taken from this thread.

Taking into account that ambient temp is 28*C and you're measuring it under 100% constant load 88-90*C is OK.
Most laptops reach these levels if left for a period of time under 100% load.
In reality you rarely do have 100% load for a prolonged period of time- apart from video trans-coding there are just few things that cause this- gaming is not one of those BTW.

Notice that HDD temperature is OK.

What kind of test was it and how long did you run it before making the attached screenshot?

The run was just about 5 minutes only. That's why i was worrying about the temperature. Somemore i had left the backplate of the laptop open as well as the ram plate.

Running on a cooler pad and on a flat desk.
It seems that, still have the temperature problem.
I will try to run it for 30minutes,and give it a try see if its still overheating or not.

Thanks for your information downloads :D appreciate it much ..haha happy came across this lounge

This was the updated result. At 100% load it was about 95C >_< and the TZS0 PCH and GMCH is quite high same goes for the graphic card hitting 80C.
The fan speed has been set to 100%.
Hard disk is at 47C >_< sighs my whole laptop is kinda hot though.

Could it be the thermal paste problem?

I'm not so sure. With a room temperature of 28*C and under full load these temps seem plausible.

    @ka4o_pi4a
I have tested the thermal paste seems to be fine though cuz every system i have used it on seems to have a good temperature probably i can leave that out though
About the fan grill being blocked,i have cleared it off the dusts and everything, but looking at the grill doesn't seems to have problem though, one thing about the area is,when i set the fan to 100% the area seems not so cold though i mean cannot feel much air could it be the fan has died?

    @downloads
...I was using the coolerpad as well, but it seems the temperature is really getting worse though, because several weeks ago,i noticed my pc has been running hot, that's why i bought a cooler pad, could it be the fan is dead..?
How do i test it out >_< hmm
The test i've been running is Blend - Prime 95 though forgot to state it out haha

Did you open the notebook ? If you are not and the grill was blocked very good you can't clean it only with blowing caned air or with the vacuum cleaner :D The other thing - it reaches those temps only for 5 min. - that's why I think and the thermal paste is not very good now. I used to live in Cyprus before and there during the summer the temps in the room was about 35-37 degrees and my CPU never reach 90 degrees (85-86) I think.

    Thanks for your suggestion.
I have used the vacuum cleaner,it seems that the fan was stuck with the dusts there.
It's doing pretty well now less than 75C managed to overclock the GPU heh
    Thanks guys! :D
