Men I write in my post that's my mother's laptop - Acer Extensa 5620 I think. Just post the screen's to see how dirty can be a laptop cooling. I have Aspire 5740G like in the description in the first post. I don't know what is the difference between 5470 and 5650 (do some google search for more info).

First of all keep TDP at 35W do no 720/740/840.
Best band for the buck CPUs are Core i5 560 and 580M.
Other than that Core i7 620 and 640M.

Hi. If I plug external display (samsung 24") with HDMI to this laptop, and set the monitor to 75 Hertz from ATI display configuration, is it ok? Because I could not set it through the windows7 display settings, only from the ATI program.

I am asking because in the windows display settings there is a message that warns me from changing to unsupported options because it may damage my hardware.

 Is that an acer? My laptop stays hot. Cpu idles at 60c and it hits 95c playing games.

Squaretrade (got an extended warranty from them) told me I would void my warranty if I opened it.

Anyone else having issues with Adobe Flash player, especially after its most recent update? It seems now that when my GPU is overclocked, the GPU crashes when watching flash videos (YouTube, etc.). This didn't happen before.

If I remove hardware acceleration from flash, there's no issue, as the GPU isn't processing the video. Anyone else experiencing this?

I've tested it with the most recent version of Flash and FF 12 and GPU at 600/800 and had no problems with YouTube.

Hi, I am having an issue with my laptop. Its overheating so bad when I am playing Diablo 3, where as when i play other games. I get average 70C playing over games, Diablo 3 fluctuates from 85-95C. My graphics card is updated and i have a cooler fan sitting under my laptop, also cleaned it out with compressed air. Everything on Diablo 3 is set to lowest settings with max FPS set to 55, I am not sure why its getting so hot. Would like some help, thanks.

I was playing Diablo 3 while the Free Beta Weekend event was on,but had no overheating problems. It wasn't overheating more than any other games i play.My max temp while playing heavy games is around 80C-85C tops.I don't know what is causing your overheating problems.

I'm also playing D3, only playing D3. At a 660/905 overclock, extremely stable, I get, at default fan settings (as opposed to manually cranking up the fan using RW Everything), at most 70ºC GPU, which is when the next fan speed activates. Maxed D3 graphics settings.

I did clean out my heatsink/fan and reapplied thermal grease to the CPU and GPU just before D3 came out, though. Before I did this the temperatures were quite a bit hotter.

I would honestly say that it probably is your thermal grease. After a while it becomes somewhat dried out and loses some contact between the heatsink and cores. Don't be afraid of opening your computer up and cleaning out the heatsink and reapplying grease once per year or so.

Hi guys and gals, I registered here because I have been interested in upgrading my Acer Aspire 5738 with parts from a 5740G. I know this is possible because the chasis is exactly the same. The only thing I must purchase is a new heatskink because the 5740G has the cpu, gpu, and intel chip rearranged.

The problem I am having is actually finding the exact motherboard I am looking for. I need the board with the radeon hd 5650 with 1gb vram. The sources I have found do not list the card only that the board has non-integrated gpu. I am afraid that if I purchase the board it will have the lower gpu which I believe is either the 5470 or 4750(might be 4570)?

Its not so simple that I can just ask the company selling the boards because I have tried and received vague answers. They are overseas in China and I feel like the pre-sales support does not know what they are talking about and just interested in selling me the board. I will be using PayPal in case I have to dispute the order so I'm not worried about that, just wasting time installing everything into the laptop and then finding out I have the low end GPU.

This upgrade will be fun for me to do and a bit challenging. Not to mention it is very cost effective for what I am looking to do with it.

The issue is that I cannot find a reliable website with the board I am looking for. There are pictures of the GPU but that only has numbers which if I look up do not help.

I found another post on a different forum with exact pictures of the board I was looking at purchasing but the question was not answered about the GPU.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you very much!

    http://oi40.tinypic.com/qx07q1.jpg

    http://oi44.tinypic.com/34y7ml4.jpg

The 2nd image has the exact numbers on the chip for the board I am looking at. Searching this chip on google does not answer my question. I can only find the spare chip for sale without any info about what the GPU model actually is.

Thank you so much katalin_2003 for your quick response, you saved me a lot of time with this information.

I'm not 100% sure but if the board I want has 1gb video memory on the hd5650, then there should be 4 chips by the gpu instead of 2 like in the picture? There are two empty spots in the one I linked. That might be a clue for me... if there is any more information anyone has let me know please ;)!

    @ka4o_pi4a

There's no BIOS option to boot from mini-PCI Express so it would require a changed boot-loader which is supposedly possible in Linux but I don't know about Windows.

    @vsosa

Yes HD5650 should have 4 memory chips. I made some photos of the mobo when I upgraded the CPU but I can't find them

    Hi! Me again.

Im having problems with my acer heating up pretty badly.

    I only play Minecraft,watch youtube,9gag,nothing special.
But it gets to the point where i just cant rest my palm on it its just too damn hot!(thats kind of what she said :p)

B4 i would just use RW-everything to increase the fan speed, but now for some reason, when i startup RW-everything,i get some retarded BSOD,like, you can see the blue bsod, but its like my graphics card crashed.

So,essentially what im searching for is a new way to increase my cooling fan speed, simple and fast. (No BIOS pleez)

    Thanks in advance!!!! :d <3

Nope HDD is slightly to the right from the touchpad- take a look at the shape of a service hatch.
Upper left corner is where radiator is. Use an app of your choosing to check what's overheating. It may just require repasting or refitting or a radiator if it doesn't make good contact with either CPU or GPU.

EDIT: What about HDD and GPU temps? What's your room temperature?

Well since im probably gonna leave this laptop here where i live since im going to high school in another town,so im gonna buy a new notebook.

But thats in september, theres a lot of time.

I dont think any kind of 'manual' fixing of the laptop requiring to open it,is not an option, since i dont wanna pay someone to do it,and im too scared to do it myself.

Also,im using amd gpu clock tool and the thermal page is showing between 59-70 degrees,im gonna look for a thermal reader for the hdd and cpu later, but i think the temperature of the room im keeping it is about 18-23 degrees, but i think its dust,so im gonna blow out the fan a little. (i definitely need a compressed air can).

Do you maybe know a program which can change the fan speed? like rw-everything?

    Thx for replying! :D

You need to be more specific- is this GPU temp under load (a game) or not under load (with 2d clocks)?
Also did you check is you CPU usage is really very low when the notebook is supposed to be idle? Maybe something is eating up the cycles...

Anyway- cleaning is definitely in order if you haven't done so already.
Increasing fan rpm is not a real solution since it's not the root of the problem- something else is causing the unit to overheat.

Start with a thorough cleaning. I always have a can of gas-duster which costs some $3 and use it on vents almost every time I clean LCD (it's a dust and fingerprint magnet)

Yes the GPU temperatures are whent the notebook is under load (playing Minecraft, while running other programs).

i tried blowing in the fan (while it was in sleep mode,so the fan wasnt moving)
some dust came out of it,im thinking of taking my dads air compressor and blow it out that way, since dust may be the problem here (My last computer's fan broke because of dust,it literally had a layer of dust 1mm thick on it).

Im currently getting 71 degrees (Minecraft, and chrome running) CPU usage is between 8%-17% (a bit low isnt it?) also quite a bit of memory is used up.

On a unrelated note, its showing that i have 3086mb of memory available, tho it says on the spec sheet i have 4 gigs of memory? is 1gb not shown because its used by Windows,or does it physically only have 3gb of memory?

Also,i downloaded some cpu thermometer software, and it says its between 55-57 degrees but for some reason its showing 2 cores (I just looked it up and found out i have a dual-core processor mind=blown)and the GPU is showing 66 degrees (its lower now because since i started writing this reply i exited minecraft).

I dont think ill get it checked out,as i said ill just blow it out,and hope it serves me well till september.

If i do get it checked out ill update u on the situation ;D thx for all the replies, love this thread <3

That would hint towards the screen itself of possibly a cable.
Try with a VGA monitor if you can. If it doesn't appear there either you should probably think of replacing the cable (it's cheap so it's worth trying) and if not it's most likely an LCD display itself.

$16 is not expensive- you'll see what expensive means if it gets to replacing the LCD.
Does it make any difference how the blinking part looks when you move the LCD.

It makes it less likely to be the cable but I's start with replacing it anyway.
It's cheap and it's one thing to rule out.

Today I got new video cable. I replaced my old cable with the new one, but there is no difference. The lines still apper every two seconds. Now I think its 100 % problem with loptop LCD. Sometimes lines go from Acer 5740g screen problem 2 - YouTube to Acer 5740g problem with screen - YouTube but there is no time then no lines in screen. Always smaller or bigger line. Also I tried to connect laptop to TV via VGA cable and of course there is no lines. Maybe there are fixes to this problem with LCD ? Which LCD part is broken ?

    @vycius
There's no inverter so there are no parts in between. Just an LCD assembly as a whole.

It's most likely an LCD screen but I'd be cautious about this. I still have an Aspire 6920G on my hands which shows all kind of lines on an internal LCD but not on an external monitor- and contrary to what you might think LCD is not a problem- GPU is.
In case of 6920G it means a new MXM module but as far as 5740G is concerned it would mean a new mobo.

I would find a local service center if I were you- and ask them to diagnose the laptop for you. Screen used in 5740G has a common type of connector so they will surely have one lying around that fits. It will cost you a bit you don't even have to get the laptop disassembled.
Just remove the panel on top of the keyboard- disconnect the LVDS cable, connect the other one that you've bought and attach another LCD panel.
They should be able to do this for you in 15 minutes and while it will cost you it will also potentially save you money if it's a GPU issue rather than LCD one.

It works perfectly fine (on an OCed GPU). At one point it got a little jerky but it wasn't because FPS went down- it must have been something else.
Another matter is that the game is nowhere near as good as reviews say and has a nonexistent plot but in terms of optimization, looks, sound and so on it's very good.

What is the software, that shows pop-up when you configure volume or brightness(through Fn or the "+" and "-"). I reinstalled windows, so now i can't figure out that app name.

Hi all, my first post and what a delight it is. I must add though that this forum has been very helpful to me (in optimizing my lappy for gaming, 3D benchmarking and the like). Thanks to the sensible words of members like Downloads and the like for keeping the forum going.

I have something to share regarding performance burst – at least on 3DMark 06, Vintage, 11 and gaming generally. I recently read some articles on benchmark and reviews of Solid State Hybrid Drive and realized that they were ideal for aging lappys, since came in 2.5”, significantly improved boot time (in relation to traditional 2.5” 5400 and 7200 RPM drives) and finally is its low cost – as compared to SSD of similar capacity. Therefore, I decided to go with a Seagate Momentus XT from newegg. A 500GB, 7200 RPM Seagate Momentus XT at newegg cost about the same price as any 500 GB 7200 RPM 2.5” drive in fact, it is lower in cost than some of the high end 500GB 72000 RPM 2.5” drives. This HD cost about $100 and is also available on Amazon and other PC hardware site.

One of the most visible performance burst noticed was in 3DMark 11 where about 210 P points was gained, moving from 1020 P points to 1231 P points.

    My lappy specs are:
Core i5 520M @ 2.4GHz (default, no BIOS or manual overclocking).
AMD Radeon 5650M @ (620/940, manually overclocked using AMD clock tool).
    2x2 GB ram @ 1066 MHz.
    Windows 7.

In CoD MW3, I noticed fewer lags in gameplay. yap load time is more than 50% faster.
