Today we are going to put our nVidia 9600M GT to its maximum performance, which hold up to 140% of its initial capacity!
Graphics cards essentially have 3 “clocks” at different frequencies, the GPU (core chip that makes all the calculations), the DDR memory (where textures are stored and read) and the SHADER (which processes each pixel individually parallel to the GPU)
There are two ways to overclock these graphics cards, hardware (BIOS flashing) and software (nvidia software)
Now we are going to the heart of the matter, if we overclock the card is best to keep the GPU
DR ratio and DDR:SHADER ratio, I’ve seen many overclocks that work very well without caring this proportion, but if we do this we will avoid bugs (black screens) and the scores in 3Dmark will rise proportionally to the overclock, this will not happen if we went up with the GPU and not with the DDR, etc …
Therefore, for the 9600M GT we have this values (see at http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA -GeForce-9600M-GT.9449.0.html )
Core Speed 500 MHz
Shader Speed 1250 MHz
Memory Speed 800 MHz
Well, I have tested some configurations an I carry the core to 660 MHz mantaining the proportion (AND ALWAYS GETTING WITH THE DIVISION NATURAL NUMBRES WITHOUT DECIMALS).
I had 5600 marks before and now i have 7636 !!!!
500 / 1250 = 0.4 SHADER
500 / 800 = 0.625 DDR
For 660:
660 / 0.4 = 1650 MHz
660 / 0.625 = 1056 MHz
So let’s open the tool and put the values [660 / 1056 / 1650], sit over a couch in order not to fall, and watch the 3Dmark score!

I don't know how you can hit 1056 mhz with memory alcyonex, mine crash above 975 mhz
-
-
Alcyonex - For overclocking is the best drivers to use - Forceware 179.28 (like in your pic) ?
Do the forceware 18x support overclocking?
What sort of FPS increase in games would we see with your overclock over stock ? -
Mine also crashed above 975 mhz, but when I mantain the syncronization, it doesn't crash
In the GTA now i drive with a lot of cars at 25-28 FPS, and with the original values I used to have 14-20 -
Do you think its better using 179.28 then than using DOX's customised drivers ? I take it you have also tried the latest nvidia drivers ?
Also since I have a P7350 2.0 ghz cpu, do you think I will still be able to achieve these overclocks ?
Could the graphics card fail quicker and easier by constantly using these overclocks ? -
If you are going to play for a lot of time in a desk, put a values like this ones (also very good scoring)
-
Alcyonex - That GPU clock above is higher tho, shouldn't I be putting it down to safe the GPU life ?
Also I have a problem on my laptop (not related to overclocking) - When I scroll webpages, or scroll anything , everytime I scroll I hear a low buzzing noise coming from inside the laptop, its not the speakers as they are muted. I think its the graphics card. Anyone experience this, or know how I could solve it ?
thanks -
And about the buzzing noise, it's normal, it's due to the piezoelectric effect (almost all the Core2Duo have this sound) -
Ok cool, thanks for your help, I'll try your values
-
One thing I forgot to say:
At the moment on stock GPU clocks, when the full power of my GPU isn't need (example i'm just web browsing ) it runs at 169mhz (I checked in GPU-Z) , so it downclocks it when its not needed.
If I overclock my GPU. Will it still underclock it when it doesnt need to use the full power of the GPU ? -
yes it will
there are three progressive sets of frequencies on our gpu according to needs, only the last one (full 3D) is overclocked. Of course you can do a hardware OC of the three sets but it's stupid.
Alcyonex, i'm not really convinced about your core and memory synchronization story. Core and shaders seem to be quite linked ok but memory i don't think so. For me, it doesn't work, synchronization or not. I think memory value is totally independant from the others. -
So when I do a hardware overclock, flashing the bios, I should just change the last set (full hd) and keep the other sets the same ?
-
For me, with that sychonization the marks are very proportional to the OC. -
Hmm a question. Is this hp computer better then the aspire 5930G
Link:
http://www.pccity.se/is-bin/INTERSH...jB&CatalogCategoryID=S9LD4QFH6zgAAAEO7Uws9Q5F -
The 9600m GT gpu in that laptop is DDR2 which will ultimately produce about 10 to 15 FPS less in games.
Also, I think that particular HP laptop has been noted to have poor cooling.
I would personally recommend you go with Acer 5930G. -
okey but is this HP better then the other one i posted in my latest post
http://www.dustin.se/pd_5010208850.aspx -
Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-) But actually there are exactly 4 sets in nibitor when you open your bios rom : 2D/thrtl/3D/extra but it's the same logic, you have to change only the last one "extra" -
My speaker grill strip sticker thing is coming off on the right hand side, it keeps coming up and won't stay stuck down, any ideas on the best way to fix this, and keep it stuck down ?

HD 4650 : 7180 points i'm very surprised !!! And HD 4670 should score more ! But no info yet if compatible or not with MXM II.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4650.13883.0.html -
No difference.
And same cooling issues.
Although, if you want a HP laptop that much, then nothing should stand in your way of getting it.
I'm only trying to keep you aware of potential issues that these laptops have ... not to mention the fact they come with a slower 9600m GT. -
Hey guys, I'm having a problem with my 5930g. I searched the forums but couldn't find anything, don't know if this is the place to ask, if not please move this. This is the situation:
I installed windows 7 on it and it was working fine, then yesterday I got a BSOD, but with using the start up repair it worked again, till another BSOD, and since then windows won't boot anymore, and in the setup it doesn't detect the HD. Tried to install vista or win 7 again, but it says there is no hard drive, and it asks me for drivers for it. But when I have to select where to look for the drivers, there are 2 places: one is the CD/DVD drive, and the other one is the volume "X", size approx 40 mb, with some files in it. This is one of the recovery partitions right? I started to think the HD was dead but if this appears then it should still be working right? So, I don't know what to do, so please, if you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for taking the time to read, it got a little long... -
If you are constantly experiencing BSOD's and the setup cannot detect the hard drive, there is a possibility the HDD failed.
Go into BIOS and check if it recognizes the HDD.
If it doesn't detect it either, then there is a very strong possibility it failed.
How long did you have the laptop before this happened?
Have you done something to the laptop (such as dropped it on the floor ... kicked it, or spilled beverage ... anything at all) before this started happening?
If not, then I would just call Acer and have them replace the hard drive under warranty (it should be under warranty anyway since the 5930G's hit the market what ... 5 or 6 months ago?)
Also, if this error happened without you doing anything to the laptop, it might be an indication the hard drives in all of our laptops are compromised.
It's only a remote possibility of course since 1 case doesn't exactly prove anything concrete.
But I would recommend to everyone to back-up their crucial files (just in case).
I'll be leaving for UK this Saturday, and will likely purchase a new (faster and larger in capacity) HDD in a month or so while keeping the old one (the one I'm primarily using) for external storage. -
Thanks for the answer -
On sunday, my laptop's fans (acer 5930g) started to make really loud noises and it keeps happening every so often. It sounds like they are working overtime but the temps are only about 50-55C
Does anyone know why this is? I dont want to open it up because all warranty has then been voided.
Please help
thanks -
Warranty is not being voided by opening the laptop.
Acer allows you to open the laptop and replace/upgrade the cpu/ram/hdd ... the new components you put in won't be covered by the laptop's warranty ... but everything else will.
So if you have to send the laptop back to Acer for one reason or another ... just replace the new components with the older ones and that should be it.

Try cleaning out your laptop air vents through vacuuming.

I am seriously at a loss.
Perhaps you could attempt the following:
Download/burn Linux OS and start it up from the CD itself (without installing).
That way, once you've entered the OS, if the hdd is still alive, you should be able to see it on the desktop as a specific drive letter or something.
It will at the very least allow you to retreat/backup any crucial files you might have had by storing them on a USB.
If you cannot find the hdd on the Linux desktop, then I'm afraid there is a good possibility the HDD failed.
You might want to try and find Disk Doctor utility that can be run from DOS for example.
If you can run the scanning program on the hard drive, it may allow you to identify any bad sectors (provided of course the hard drive is still alive).
If nothing of the sort works, it's time to contact Acer and use your warranty.
Describe the problem to them, and if they ask, tell them that you have NOT done anything to the laptop (upgrades or anything of the sort), and that the hard drive simply stopped working after using the laptop normally for 3 months.
Btw ... I do have a question.
Have you been transporting the laptop in your backpack or a laptop bag to another place while it was still on?
This could interfere with the hard drive after all, especially if you had a few bumps along the way. -
One other thing.
I've been playing Prince of Persia 2008 over the past few days under Vista x64.
My idle temps are standard as usual, but the maximum temps on the cpu reached 70 degrees even with the cooler active (along with the gpu that reached 68 degrees).
Those temps are the stock ones when I didn't have the cooler and are usually by 10 degrees lower.
Granted, it's been a few weeks since I vacuumed my laptop vents and I will clean them out likely tonight or tomorrow.
Still it's odd the maximum temps would reach stock ones as if the cooler was not present.
I was not OC-ing the gpu or anything else.
Hm ... is it possible this maximum temperature increase is because I upgraded RAM?
I really don't see how, but I'm not excluding the possibility.
I'm using Nvidia's official drivers btw.
Like I said, I will vacuum the vents asap and try it out again, although I seriously doubt it will help.
I could also turn off the Zalman cooler and see the laptop temps then.
EDIT:
Tested out without the Zalman active.
Seems that the temps reach 80 deg C as well.
Although ... I think at one point, if the game is demanding, the maximum temps will spike up stock temps then again return by 10 deg lower.
I have noticed this in some instances.
Oh well, cooler and laptop vents cleaning will have to be done either way. -
Sometimes when I quit a game the max temp may be like 89 while current will be 80
Also, when playing grid 2day I hit 90 on my CPU and 89 on GPU again
I have vacuumed recently.
I opened up the back cover and the heatsink fan had some dust in it that was visible, but didn't look like too much
I think I will get some compressed air soon, I have a week off next wed, and see how that affects temp.
I am also thinking of getting a cooler
PS- SOmeone wrote the thermal paste acer put on the CPU wasn't very good.
Maybe when the warranty is up, i may check out the thermal paste on the GPU and replace it with some artic silver.
Also, those T9600 bechies had me drooling........... -
Same here i'm 77-78 while playing but there is often a 82 degres peak at game start up. It's normal.

some game benchmark results ALKYONEX!!!!plssss!!!!

Just reporting here to say that I recieved my Cooler Master Notepal Infinite notebook cooler, and it's the best £18 I've spent in a while. At idle it has lowered my temps by about 5-8C, but when gaming it lowers them by around 15C.
I borrowed my friend's Zalman NC2000 to compare and it's not as effective as the CM, but still not bad - temps were about 10C lower during gaming. I think this is because there is no air blowing through the top third of the Zalman, which unfortunately is where the air intake for the CPU or GPU is positioned underneath the 5930G. The CM however has cold air blowing right into the intake.
If you game a lot I would definitely recommend it, not to mention it's also half the price of the Zalman. -
Lol ...
I might just leave my Zalman in Zagreb and buy the CM instead when I get to UK.
But I think I'll hold on to the Zalman ... it's working ok for the most part when it comes to my needs. -
Also does everyone fan inside the 5930g make a weird noise when it stops and starts. Like on startup, and when the fan switches off ??? -
You as well, Deks so we can compare the sizes of both
Thanks -
What is the model of everyones dvd-rw/blu-ray drive in device manager?
And also what screen does everyone have on their 5930g. Go to device manager - monitors - double click, then details and select hardware id, and post up -
I cleaned the air vents with compressed air and vacuuming but the noise it still here, however, the noise starts after about 30 minutes.
Any ideas? I think i might send back to Acer but i jsut would like to check on here first.
Thanks -
When I do the 3dmark06 test why is the cpu test got 0fps ? is that normal, it goes really really slow
-
yes that is completely normal boy
-
The monitor shows up as MONITOR\CMO 1554
What does that mean????? -
Here are some pictures as requested
As you can see it fits the 5930G perfectly. It's smaller than the Zalman NC2000 but bigger than the NC1000. It's also lighter than the NC2000, but seems less sturdy.
Regarding the fan noise, there are 3 settings (low to high). Low is hardly audible but medium is noticable, however its not annoying and you soon get used to it especially when you're gaming. High is actually pretty loud but I think its a small price to pay to keep your laptop cool. -
Thanks
looks good, I was thinking of buying a cooler, as I seem to have the highest temps among everyone here
I'll keep an eye out for it next time I go shopping
Thanks again (+ rep)
EDIT
Just looked at the pic more closely, do you have a W800i????
Looks like it in the lid reflection
Nice mouse as well -

]
I really wanted to get one, but it's a little too pricey for me.
I settled on the logitech MX518, and will hopefully get it within the week
CONGRATS ON THE SICK COOLER BY THE WAY
It's awesome
I need a cooler now LOL -
MX518 is a great choice, it's still one of the best mice available. In fact I prefer it over the habu. The habu is a bit flimsy and the software is useless
-
Thanks man,
You made my day(+ rep)
My first "gaming" mouse so I can't wait to try it out -
alcyonex what about gaming??any difference with the new cpu??
-
I get 200-300 points more with XP!!
And in the gaming the diference is awesome, especially in GTA, before I get 18-20 FPS by runing a car, and now 25-28, in stopped scenes I get 40-50. (at 1280x800) -
8930-6058 18.4 inch display
Yeah I know it's the wrong thread but it's the same 9600m GPU with only a T5800 and I'm just amazed!!!Attached Files:
