The problem is that the first Acer partition is the active one and when you format it, it erases your boot informations and you'll get a "NTLDR Is Missing" at startup before windows loading.
I've tried like 6 or 7 partitionning softwares able to run under Dos and only one allowed me to change the active partition. It takes like two seconds...very simple when you know it ;-)
I would have probably died of sadness if I had not been able to recover my 200GB of "important data"
Just to say that i was shocked by the high number of crappy partitionning softwares. Some of them are very dangerous to use. Most of them don't even recognize the Acer partitions...and Windows repairing tool either, it just repairs the system partition, but it wasn't enough in my case.
Next thing, i don't want to be pessimistic but when i look at 4860 4830 pictures or 4670's ones as well, and when i look at the shape of my 9600M GT on my mobo, it seems pretty obvious that they won't fit ;-)
-
you can erase those partitions when you are doing a full and fresh reinstall of an OS. that way you would get the space for use. Forget using partitioning software to free those drives...they just mess them up.
-
I erased all extra partitions so I only have 3.
1 for XP Pro SP3, 1 for Vista x64, and 1 for movies/games/music/etc ...
but I did it after I already installed XP and Vista and had no problems really.
It's possible Partition magic messed things up for you guys.
I used the Linux based program to re-partition the drive ... but it also took it's sweet time ... virtually hours. -
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
when you do a full recover is it 100% back to the day you bought it configuration.
Just i had a Samsung and when you first boot it, it asked for your name and other settings, like when vista first installs, and then makes the recovery partition, so your name is permanently in the recovery partition. -
Indeed ath007 when you fully reinstall an OS there's no problem.
Deks you talk about Gparted ??? I heard it's a good software to install several O.S. It didn't work for my specific problem but I had a good feeling on this one. I think i'll use it later after saving my data on a external Hard drive to try windows seven ;-)
And yeah partition magic+Vista = BOUM -
Anyone seen the new acer 5935? http://www.notebookcheck.net/Column-CeBIT-Hannover-Day-4.14602.0.html
Looks pretty nice imo. If it comes with a significantly better gpu that 9600m GT then maybe I'll sell my 5930G and buy one of those instead -
I must have missed that part of the article. -
-
lol ... appears I have misread his post
-
Mobile middle class gpu's market isn't really on the move at the moment. 5935G might be equiped with GT 130M or HD 4650...it's not really a big improvment in performance terms.
Besides i may take the T9800 if it becomes affordable in the future. Actually you can find it at 283 euros. -
BTW guys i've seen that some upcoming notebooks are equiped with 6GB ram ( 2GB+ 4GB). I hope we could put these 4GB sticks in our laps one day ;-)
T9600 is already affordable, the ebay seller is on fire, 173 euros and free shipping !

Hey all
Good to see you back on Deks, how is Uni in the UK
I might upgrade to a T9800 if I can find one here and if the price falls to ~150€
It would be even better if we could install an extreme processorbut I'm not sure if it is compatible and if the BIOS would allow us to overclock it
(the whole point of an extreme processor)
As for 6GB, if I upgrade (I don't see the need right now), then i would get 2x4Gb sticks for a massive 8Gb
But again not sure if our BIOS supports 8GB
Also, I plan on upgrading my hard drive to a 500GB model soon
If we can install all these upgrades then this laptop will rock, esp. with our custom paintjobs
I'm only going to go on-line on weekends from now on, cuz my AS finals are in 2 months and I haven't studied anything throughout the whole yearso time to get serious
Later -
i don't see the point in more than 4GB RAM actually .... maybe just for now
my priority is the T9600 or the T9800 then a 7200RPM HDD
as for the 9600M GT I'm not planning to change it
how old r you rayan? -
wa ant??
Not arab, but I can speak and understand some cuz of where I live
Are you doing A levels as wel??? -
where r you from rayan? -
And 7200RPM HDD seems very sexy to me too
And Rayyan 150 for a T9800 and it's on for me too but I will probably crack for a T9600 before it happensi'm too impatient.
""""I'm only going to go on-line on weekends from now on, cuz my AS finals are in 2 months and I haven't studied anything throughout the whole yearso time to get serious""""
Can i laugh ????? -
-
But my entrance into uni depends on these grades and I have 2 months to LEARN what I studied in a year
Tis a lot, esp if I want to get good grades (I do)
-
Finito dead space time to sweat blood mate p

good luck and study hard rayan its your future man ... the 5930 aint gonna disappear ... you can play all you want after these FU@&^ months -
Hey all.
I'm at the English language school actually on a work experience program.
Things took a bit of a negative turn because of the recession and all, but there is a good possibility they will stabilize from today.
If I don't start on a job today, then I will likely change the program to a full-time student so the panicking principle (a stickler for rules in this situation) doesn't get a happy trigger complex and decides to report me to the Home Office (which would result in them kicking me out of the country).
I'm not doing anything illegal btw, ... I just cannot be on a work experience program if I'm not actually on a job in hospitality (and i tried looking for one for the past 2 and a half weeks ... both in person and online, without much success ... and it wasn't helping I was limited to only 1 thing).
The principle got unhappy with the situation and because the immigration rules will change by the end of the month, so he's panicking and put gave me an ultimatum (even though it's completely unnecessary), plus he's mostly mad at his employer who decided to actually do her job and extend a helping hand (he's got 0 issues taking money away from people, and of course should students need help in these kinds of situations and a bit of time, he'd sooner stick by the book and let them go asap ... and it's the student that suffers the most in the end).
In any event ... I have something to report in terms of my laptop.
Namely, everything works fine and all, it's just that occasionally, I can hear the hard drive producing some strange clicking sounds.
As if the heads of the HD have been moved and are returning to their previous position.
Perhaps it's because I was carrying my laptop with me all the time.
Although, it was completely unpowered (not in sleep mode) while it was in my bag, so I doubt that would be issue.
The HD works just fine.
No speed problems, no crashes, no errors.
I'll also run a utility for testing the hard drive later in the day just in case.
I don't want to take any chances after all.
Regarding the potential upgrades ... I don't think our gpu's will be replaceable anytime soon.
Not unless they come up with an MXM II solution that is much more powerful, but to be frank, the MXM II is dying out, and MXM III, IV, etc. will likely be the candidates for the future (but we won't count out the II slot just yet).
RAM ... well, I could personally use 8GB under Vista x64 for 3ds Max and all.
To my knowledge, the chipset itself supports 8GB ... it's only a question of BIOS support at this point (which depends entirely on Acer ... and we all know just how happy companies such as these would be at the prospect of us maximizing the potential of our laptops without actually buying new ones).
The CPU ... at this point, T9600 is much cheaper, but T9800 you'd be able to undervolt ... although to tell you the truth, I doubt we will see that much of a temperature increase even with T9600 that draws more energy (we know that companies never really invest into proper cooling paste of cpu's to begin with ... unless you ask of them to and they offer this option).
So going with T9600 now would be perfectly fine ... although you can always wait a bit more for the prices to come down and just buy T9800 which is by only 130Mhz faster ... but also has a full multiplier.
The differences in speed between T9600 and T9800 won't be large. Even in cpu intensive tasks, it will be minimal.
So, going with T9600 is just as good.
Faster/larger HD ... ugh ... I could use one of those 500GB 7200RPM drives.
Although a high density platter 5400RPM would suffice.
Unfortunately, at this time, I don't have the luxury to buy extra things.
London is expensive and I need to monitor my resource use (at least until I get a part time job and start earning some cash).
Since I already have 4GB of Ram and up-to date BIOS that fully uses it, I don't think RAM is such of a priority as are the CPU and HDD. -
Deks, what a beautiful synthesis of our anarchical comments
Seems that we all agree on the fact that we first and foremost have to concentrate our efforts on upgrading CPU and HDD ;-)
As for your HDD sound, maybe it's nothing but don't hesitate to backup your important data on an external HDD in case it would suddenly die, we never know -
I don't have an external HDD ... but I do have an 8GB USB stick
It will be more than enough to backup the critical data I have.
Everything else in terms of data I need/use is replaceable.
The hdd sound ... it's more of a physical thump that you can feel.
It's as if the heads are clicking back into their places after they've been moved or as if something was stuttering.
Dunno ... but will definitely backup just in case and run a testing program for the hard drive.
Well, at the very least I do have 4GB RAM, so I am able to use it with the new bios in x64.
Loving the fact I have good amounts of RAM in my laptop actually, so I'm not in any immediate danger of using all of it (although 8GB would be nicer).
I use Vista x64 for the most part ... but I still want to switch to Windows 7 x64 asap (will simply have to wait a bit more) as Vista is a tad annoying anyway (plus I don't want to put on SP2 RC just yet ... will likely wait for the full release just in case).
Upgrading the CPU/HDD would likely expand our laptop's worth by another 2 years or so easily.
A larger transition in tech is of course Quad core, but because Montevina platform had to undergo a refresh, we cannot use them in our laptops sadly (which is why I think T9600 would be a worthy investment for us if we don't want to actually buy NEW laptops).
Nehalem seems like a pretty great thing, but since it's coming out later in the year ... I think we can deal without it for at least 2 years or so (from now, and just wait until the next larger transition and not smaller refreshes).
Or the impatient ones can sell their 5930G's and buy Nehalems. -
Hi Everybody. saw this particular notebook at a store last weekend and was thinking of getting it. Is it still the best bang for the buck (@$933)? Or are there any new alternatives out there?
-
On my dell stationary computer which is like 3-4 years old im planing to put up as a server at home. The thing is that it's only SATA and not SATA2 in the motherboard but i know if i would buy this http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=90105&ref=Prisjakt hdd i could just switch it to SATA even though it's SATA2 Right?
What worries me is if my computer will be able to read the 1500gb hdd?
Thanks in advance -
just curious if anyone try original authentec driver instead of acer outdated driver ?
-
-
it's for windows 7, but it suppose to work with vista. -
Anyone tried these NEW ACER Graphics Drivers - 179.34 .
Vista 32bit - http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23335
Vista 64bit - http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23336
Am at work at the moment, anyone wanna try them n compare to 179.28/179.48 and see if any difference ? -
I have a question : Theorically, a notebook with a 25 W processor instead of 35 W (and exactly the same other components) should have better gpu overclocking possibilities on a 90 W alimentation like ours, am i right ????
When i see that 9700M GT has a 45W consumption and 9600M GT only 23W...It might mean that with my actual clocks my gpu consumption may be around 45 W.
It can explain the black screens when you go higher, the 90W alim may be exceeded ?! (35W+morethan45W+other components= 90+++ BOUM ;-)
Question 2 : Why my cpu voltage on intel website is 1.050-1.150 V and actually in my notebook 1.163-1.363 V. Safety margin ? Anticipation of processor change with higher consumption ? -
Has anyone used nbitor and set there voltage to 1.16 V ?
Have you been able to overclock more after doing this without getting a black screen?
Would 1.16v damage anything? -
-
hi guys. im just wondering if its possible to use the media hotkeys to right of the keyboard when playing my videos in vlc? how do i configurate this?
-
Hey guys, i'm about to undervolt my cpu and i've run a stress test on it. In ten minutes of a torture test, my cpu went up to 79°C. Nothing spécial here but in the meantime, Gpu which is idle at 169 mhz and therefore totally inactive went up from 47° to 69°C. We can see how much cpu and gpu are closely linked in the cooling system !!!
Edit : Undervolting is incredible ! i love it !!!!! it works like a charm ! More than ten degres less ppppp 79----->67°C max for the moment !!!!!! -
That would be great
thanks -
does changing the voltage affect performance ?!
-
here's the guide if you want to try, it's easy :
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824 -
BTW guys did you hear about "Intel X-25M SSD 80 GB" ???? If not, take a look at this :
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Intel-X-25M-SSD-80-GB.14106.0.html
Those flash memory based HDD are still too expensive but read performance is outstanding !!!! It'll be mine one day !!!! -
Kallogan did you use rmclock ?
And how much did you undervolt by, what values did you set? -
Factory voltage on my highest multiplicator (10x) was 1.250V so i lowered it by 0.2.
I have a T5800. I have now about 10 degres less at 100% cpu usage. -
Hey guys,
Been following this thread for some time now.. Ofcourse i also have an 5930, or else i wouldn't be reading this thread
I like what you guys are doing, even though i have to say i know pretty much about pc's (not laptops) you guys came through for me allot of times
..
I would like to thank you for that, it's been very helpfull and fun to read the most of you had(have) the same problems as me, so thank you !!
Just this month i have my acer for half a year now and i learned allot (from you but also by my selve) And would like to share my experience with all of you, for sure after i red about undervolting because i just discovered it last week when i installed a program to overclock my cpu..
It's called Crystalcpuid(CCPUID) (I found it on this thread so the link must be a few pages back)
First off i would like to say; THIS SYSTEM CAN NOT BE OVERCLOCKED!!!
I tried at least 5 programs, the all don't work, and if you read on about it, most people say that it's not supporting the PM45 Chipset, wich we all haveThere is one program that may work in the future (Setfsb autotool) they say they are working on it.. I hope so.. And some people got Setfsb working on PM45 but with very small overclock (max 200Mhz) not on a 5930 and on a very strange way:| tried it but no succes
So looks like we are restricted to the GPU for now
BUT what did work for me, was the Intel speedstep function in CCPUID;
You can regulate the voltage and the multiplier, sadly no more than baked in the chip.. ( i have the P7350 and it goes from 6.0 to 7.5.. So no overclock and you can't really do anything with it, it maybe reduce battery life when set on 6.0(1596Mhz))
But i you push a little button you also can adjust the voltage and i find this to very much use..
You can set this (on my CPU, but i think it's the same for all the P-series) from 1.013 to 1.225.
Now standard when you put your laptop in low power mode it automaticly changes to 1.013 (depending on how you configured you modes) but then it also changes the multiplier (duh!) and the you get a CPU that uses 1.013V on 1596Mhz and only 16 watts!! But not great for gaming thenuuh
Now you know where i'm going, set the multiplier on 7.5 and keep the voltage on 1.013; Now you get a CPU that uses 1.013v on 1995(2ghz) and still only 16 watts!!!
Ofcourse i went down in step with the voltage, every day a little lower, try different games and bechmarks.. GTA4 is peticulary heavy for the CPU..
And now after a few steps i'm running on the 16Watts
I havent really tried overclocking the GPU on this setting because i'm pretty happy with this
It get's after 2 hours of GTA4: CPU/GPU/HDD: 64/72/47
And with a little overclocking: 600/1500/800 67/74/47
Messurred with Realtemp 3.0 so these are max temps and probably fluctuating
And most of all GTA4 really heats my system, most games are 10c lower.. not even talking about css, when i'm playing this my system looks like its in idle, not even touching the 55c on CPU..
Now seen the fact this is my first post i still have to say:
I LOVE MY ACER 5930!! it's a great laptop.. Never had a laptop so there is not really a standard for me but it works perfect, it looks nice.. very powerfull to my standards certainly for a laptop. It's easy to carry around, so you can play with your little friendsJust love this machine!! Great bang for buck AND TO ANSWER:
I hope i informed enough, i had the feeling i was holding back on yous guys, after so much help from you
Greetz and thanks to all
PS. please read over the errors, mistaked and misspells
because firstly; not only i'm from holland but i'm stoned too -
I tried to use Crystalcpuid but couldnt get it to work, and my system kept freezing.
I might try rmclock -
.
Undervolting is very interesting, my fan is now joblessness ;-) and battery life unlimited ( i know i exagerate ;-) but just a little huh)
edit : seems like i can go lower than 1.050V with Crystalcpuid...working on this héhé.
edit 2: Well, i'll stay on RMclock, there are more options ;-) -
LOL
Great post from someone who is stoned
+ rep for making me laugh -
This underclocking program i think is really good. Better than crystalcpuid, and rmclock as it supports P-series cpu's as it allows .5 multipliers.
Its http://www.clockmod.com/index.php?/products/view/cpugenie_1.0/
It isn't free so you have to buy it or find some other way, but you can download it from that site and use everything unrestricted for 30days.
You should try it out, works good, easy to use, and has stree tests , voltage stability automated test to find best voltage etc.
I have a P7350 and at highest x7.5 multiplier it used to be 1.137V , I now have it at 1.012V and could maybe go lower . -
Guys what is the point of underclocking the processor
Doesn't it reduce the max performance of the processor -
No, the performance doesnt change, the max performance stays the same, and it runs at the same speed as normal. Just means it runs at a lower voltage so uses less power and less heat.
The only disadvantage is that it can make the system less stable if you go to too low a voltage. Tho if you go too low all that can happen is your system can freeze, you can't damage anything, unlike what overclocking a graphics card too much may do -
we talk about undervolting not underclocking, that's not the same. And Yeah it's completely safe, only benefits and in addition you become a green laptop user ;-)
i'm decided when i change my processor i'll take a P9600, 0.987 V at full speed makes me dream
i've played games for hours in two days, it's completely stable and awesome temps :
After two hours of gaming with T5800 on 1.050V at 1995 mhz, gpu (620/1550/850) 82----->75-77 max
cpu 80----->72 max
I'll try cpugenie dragonuk it looks great ! -
Yeh sorry i meant to say 'undervolting' not underclocking !
