Hi, I just bought a new 5930 yesterday and I'm kinda thrilled. I've heard that there's a lot of performance comin' out of the PC for the amount of cash my wallet had to bleed.

Anyway, I've not been getting good performance at all while gaming. I'm experiencing quite bad FPS even in Call of Duty 4. Down to 30 at worst. Medium settings, 1024x768.

As I'm completely lost in the area of performance and hardware/software, tho interested, I've come here to ask for the help of superiors.

I have a pretty clean versions of XP SP3 installed, fyi.

I guess my drivers are a bit of a mess... I first tried installing one of the 179. versions but something went wrong and files were missing while installing. So I dl'd one of the Dox versions to replace it. Tho I'm afraid i was somewhat careless while cleaning up the old ones. Also I'm running IDE as I haven't tried to install any SATA drivers yet.

Now I'm gonna start over with a fresh reinstall of XP SP3 and thus I would be really grateful for short guide on how I could maximize the potential the 5930 has. No need to go into detailed overclocking and the likes. What I'm asking for is rather:

    1. What drivers should i pick?
    2. How do I setup XP for maximal performance?
    3. What 3rd party programs can I use to configure it for full performance, and check the temperatures?
    4. What else is there I can try to reach the utter sweetness?
    5. How do we achieve World Peace?

Do you know what was the reason they discontinued selling 5930g?
I'm curious about this as it IS one of the best mid-range laptops on the market for a low price.
Was the price too low, did Acer only make a limited amount of them, or did UK simply express a disinterest in selling those laptops?
    What happened exactly?

Yeh im not sure to be honestly, it was a very good spec and price. Mayb it did cost them too much for what they were selling it for.

But in the uk, it was in stock in only a few places and then by like december it was sold out everywhere, and was really hard to get.

If you try find a place to buy it now in the uk all places are out of stock or say discontinued.
Yet you can still buy the acer 5920g in a lot of places. So i;m not sure why this is.

Heh, I'm glad I bought mine when I did. I originally tried to buy from John Lewis but they stopped selling it on the website so I bought it from laptopsdirect instead. You still can't buy a better laptop for the same price

    hey guys... :(
i have started hitting big temperatures again.
    ACPI -97
    Core0/1 - 86
    GPU - 93
    HDD -50

I noticed that a lot of dust had caught up on the bottom side of the laptop. My cooling pad fans were also very dusty. After cleaning(vacuuming) those, i still got the same level of temps. Playing Assassins Creed for around 15 mins brings these temperatures and after half an hour playing, the screen starts chopping. I then multitask the game out, let it wait in the desktop for a min or two (temps go to a 70 level) then i continue gaming for a few mins.. this goes on and on.

    I haven't opened the laptop and checked... maybe i should, shouldn't i?

One more thing. I tried 3Dmark06 and got a pretty decent (i think) score of 5888. Nvidia drivers on XP SP2. After the fan cleaning, the lower temps are better. Goes more lower i mean.

But what do i do to prevent those high temps? I read those suggestions of undervolting and all. Will it really help in my case? I game a lot and i hate to see my laptop heating up esp when it hits the 90s.

    EDIT!
I took a screenshot of the CrystalCPUID window showing the Core details. Is there anything i should be knowing from this? I found the multiplier and overclocking to be 8.50/9.00 and 18.65% respectively. Is it high?

I tried RM clock again, seems i can't get it to work anymore
    Maybe because of Vista 64bits??
Liked this program on my Athlon XP-M (desktop :p)

Hehe.. Thank you, but it was not to be funny, it was an excusse for my poor Frence :p

Thanks for the recommendation.. I like the program very much, it's a nice program. But i'm sorry it's not working for me; It's says i have an TDP of 35 and the voltage is wrong too (if you compare it to CPU-Z), and i have to tell you that it's not working for you to because we have the same CPU.. ;)

It's a nice dream I WANT THE CPU TOO!!! But i'm sorry even though it's one of the best chips don't think it can go so low.. than the atom is a scam

I think CPU-Z is a more accurate piece of software.. Same goes to Realtemp3
    http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_150.zip
    http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1325/mirrors.php

First try these 2.. And if still high, there must be something wrong..

In this case undervolting will for sure help, but if you already have a problem you shouldn't be playin with this.. Fix the problem first!

Well it worked for me. I have a p7350.
The voltage was not wrong, and cpu-z read it correctly.
My temps seem lower too, so must be working

The laptop heatsink clogs with dust easily

Especially with us living in a dusty place and the dust storm we had on tuesday ;)

    Check this out

Pictures of my vents after ~6 months
Vacuuming makes no diff, as it barely gets any dust out, and it's dangerous too because of static electricity

Go to jarir and get a can of compressed air, use that to blow out dust when you open it up ;)

I burned some DL coasters on this as well, but I think I got some sucessful DL burns as well

My old desktop also had mixed results with the DLs I have used, and I don;t think they are worth it any more

2 normal dvds have a higher success rate and work out to be cheaper :D :D

i have hit 92°C this week-end on my non-overclocked gpu when playing mass effect !!!! What's the f**** !!!! Shi**y laptop ;-) Who wants to buy it ????? i'll make you a low price p

How did you get it to work? I have a P7350 and it doesn't work properly. I can change the voltages just fine, but its always locked on the lowest multiplier (6.0). When I play games or something it never increases to 7.5.

Yea, it was a terrible storm.. the worst i have seen actually..(can be made into a horror movie or something(hope some director is reading this :D))

After that too, dust is like everywhere...not that it wasn't that way before :p

Anyways, i am off to get a can of compressed air (how much does it cost?) and a new cooler pad with tilt. I need to get my machine cooler again. Hmm.. there was a time when my average temp of all components was around 31 ... those were times..

Depends which CPU you have. RMClock is probably the best if you don't have a CPU with half multipliers.

I have a P7350 and CPUgenie seems to lock the CPU to the lowest multiplier, unless I'm doing something wrong.

CrystalCPUID's multiplier management feature doesn't work because it blue screens my laptop every time. It's Intel speedstep feature does work however, but you can only set it to one multiplier. I guess it's useful for playing games though, because you can set it to the highest multiplier and undervolt.

Already over the laptop you were sleeping with not long ago :p :p :p

Probably clogged with dust (or who knows what else in your case........ ;) ;))
try cleaning the vents with compressed air :D :D

Yea I was at the bukala next to my school when it happened, saw the wall of dust some over us, got some cool pics too ;)

In Jarir they have a can for 40-50, a little expensive, but it actually last quite a while

Tell me once you get a cooler

    Hey RaYYaN,
I went and got myself a cooler pad with tilt. And guess what, I got the temperatures now 5 degrees lower...how cool is that! :) The first cooling pad helped with around 5-7 degrees at maximum gaming lower, now with this...an additional 5 degrees lower. :D

I gotta say, i spent a little extra for this model. Its made of metal. And its got usb ports and inlet for power supply and all. So, that's a big deal. My previous (normal, horizontal model) cost me 8 Riyals and this one now cost me SR 35. I might buy one more cuz i want to compare which will have the best effect (and i am selling off the older ones once i get over it). I got a hint from somewhere that the best will be the maximum tilted model with no fan. Couldn't find that by the time i got to Olaya. It got late.

So if i clean my laptop today, the results will be something... i cant wait!!! =P

btw. I couldn't go to Jarir any recently... so buying an air-can will have to wait i guess. So instead, my dad got me an air bellow/balloon that is used to blow dust out from electronic equipments. Lemme see how the works...

    Hello everyone,

I'm happy to be able to join the 5930G owners' forum - just got mine a few days ago :)

Overall I'm pleased with my new laptop, I just have a couple of issues with it:

    1) Does anyone know how to control the OSD (On-screen Display)? It functioned correctly for the first few hours after turning it on, but then after some time it just didn't show up anymore, so for example I have no idea whether the wireless is on or off, since there is no message coming up on the display when I press the Wireless button

    2) The Power settings are so that the monitor should turn off after 5 minutes of inactivity. I was away for 5 minutes and when I returned it had done just that - the monitor was turned off, however nothing I did (moving the mouse, pressing keys) was able to turn it back on. I went to Start|Turn Off Computer "blinfoldedly" (pressed the Windows key, then up, then Enter), then hit R and sure enough it rebooted, so it's not like it froze, it just wasn't able to turn the monitor back on. Has anyone else experienced this? I do have the latest video drivers installed so I don't know what the problem might be.

    3) Finally, does anyone know a way to control whether the blue "90 degree anlge" light above the keyboard is turned on/off, as well as the Acer logo light on the back lid?

    Anticipated thanks for any help.

There are still new peoples joining AND BUYING THE ACER!! so this thread is not dead i believe.. and where on page 94 so this thread is pretty popular and did his work :p

    1. I don't use the osd... i think it works slow and i just find it anoying.. but if you want to use it, you should reinstal some thing i think, it always worked for even though it was slow :p
As for the wireless you can push the button on the top left, it shows you when it's on or off..

    2. Sometimes it does that to me too, just push FN F6 (FN is next to left crtl and the windows button) With FN you can change other things too, find out for your self ;)

    3. Been searching for that option for a while now, never found it, so it's save to say; They can't be changed!

Welcome to the thread BTW ;)

    1) I think this might be because you uninstalled Acer Launch Manager, which controls the media buttons and "on screen display"

    2) Not sure why that is, but next time it happens try pressing Fn+F6 which switches the monitor on/off.

    3) Can't change these as far as I'm aware

    Welcome to the forum!

Anyone using Windows 7? tried build 7068 X86 and X64 and I was having funny bugs, so I'm on Vista 64 for now.

Another question, to flash the vga bios? usual procedure with nvflash and -5 -6 options?

    Thanks!

    Still using Vista x64 here.
Not gonna switch to 7 until it officially comes out.
But when it does, my Vista partition is history and will be replaced with Win 7 x64.

I installed a WD 320gb 7200rpm hdd and it gives a nice boost in performance. Back on Vista 32 now, I had weird wifi and rj45 bad ping issues in Vista 64 which are gone now.

I've been seeing a BSOD (blue screen) lately, with the error code STOP 0x00000008, 0xbab30d70, 0x00000000, 0x00000000. The BSOD does not appear to be triggered by anything in particular (many times I even come back to find the BSOD there, while the computer had been idling). I do, however, suspect it has something to do with the wireless (WLAN), because just before the time of any crash, the following two events are recorded in the Event Viewer:

"The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{2071701B-C8AE-4322-A54D-2EC7AA8A40DA} was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers."

"The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000007f (0x00000008, 0xbab30d70, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP.
    "

I have installed the latest original Intel drivers for the WLAN adapter, but I still get this periodically. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks.

personally speaking i'll try to get a ssd 128gb at good price in a few months since i save all my multimedia datas on an external 2,5" 500GB HD. SSD performances make me dream !

Just as a curiosity, what are your read and write performances with your 7200 rpm ???

    Ok I might as wel post this here ^^;

So I brought this laptop (John Lewis UK version) in October.

I didn't notice until recently that my GPU was running at 100% all the time 0.o
    [IMG]

I had this problem when I tried both Dox's Alternate drivers and the official nVidia laptop drivers. I've set the power settings in windows to laptop/portable so my CPU clock speed does drop, but the GPU stays at 100%.

The odd thing is that when I do nothing its at a 57-60 degree temperate. Yet when I run a graphical intensive program like CUDA or Farcry2 it pops up to 70~
Then when I go back to desktop it eventually drops to 60. All the while reporting 100% GPU clock speeds.

I'm sure my GPU card used to stepdown to a lower frequency when its not needed?

Also just to check whether temperatures are right. Heres what my laptop (more or less since October) regular temp is when say web surfing

In a first time, you could reinstall acer official vga drivers to see if the issue still persist.

Sounds like powermizer has been disabled. I think you can enable it in Nvidia Control Panel, if not try using powermizer switch: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=273276

Your temps are pretty normal. You may want to consider buying a notebook cooler if you do a lot of gaming.

WOW Ok so apparently PowerMizer isn't even on my registry 0.o since the program doesn't detect it. Also i checked the registry myself to see :O
I've installed the official laptop drivers from nVidia and Dox's latest custom driver. Apparently neither had powermizer on my registry?

EDIT: Ok I'm stupid. I found out that an external monitor automatically puts it at 100% regardless of what you're doing -.-
Darn... So I guess I have to stick with 100% on an External monitor 0.o

The odd thing is that virtually everyone's 9600 is apparently continuously running at 54 degrees C while mine on 10 degrees less (checked in both XP and Vista).
    Why the heck is that?
I mean, I'm hardly complaining, it's just curious.

Btw ... when I compared my friends 9" portable laptop with my own (5930) ... I must admit the size differential threw me off.
The 15" laptop looks/feels large ... however, very nice in what it can do for me and wouldn't trade it.

    Ali Nield ...
I think there's a possibility the laptop has been withdrawn from the market in UK for some reason.
We don't know if/why this happened, but the amount of evidence that suggests the laptop is not available for purchase anywhere in UK seems to be an indication in itself.
