if i may suggest guys, you should try Dox 185.85. I have 3-5 degres less at full load and performances are slightly better than 185.68. ;-)

    Got these yesterday
I think I mentioned them earlier on

My 3dmork score dropped ~40 marks, but I hear in-game performance is Quite A BIT better than before

Don't have many games to try with ATM
Idle temps are still the same, load temps under 3D mark also ~ the same

    Exactly

Mine hit 100C when I opened it up the whole heatsink was clogged.

Make sure its clean and align the fans of your notebook with those of the cooler
My temps don't go above 93 WITHOUT a cooler, so yours are waaay to high

    Just some tips for cleaning
Remove the back cover, it's held in place by a number of screws

Once its off. look at the fans to get an idea of how dusty the computer is.
If they are really dusty, then you can remove the 2 screws holding the fab down, to show the heatsink (the main part)

When removing the fan remember the cable, don't pull or the cable might break, just move it away from the place it was screwed

Clean the heatsink, preferably with compressed air, or an old toothbrush :D :D

Once you are done make sure to screw everything back the way it was.

I only changed Nvidia, audio drivers from manufacturers site and touchpad drivers from Acer site.
Latest Nvidia drivers will not install, previous ones are working anyway.

No problem so far, even running RM CPU Clock.

Guys, I wanted to let you know that I inspected the video cable, and it was completely fine.
It was firmly connected in it's place, continues to do so, and the image on my LCD still throws up every now and then (have to close and open the lid in order to restore the image).

If there is an issue with the video cable, it's possible that it's happening in the LCD end, and not the gpu end (although the latter is still possible if the connections are experiencing a potential problem for whatever reason).

Then again, I'm not excluding the possibility I got a faulty gpu (although I'm not getting any overheating issues, artifacts, or slowdowns during gaming ... well, I did experience a decrease in fps when I was playing Prince of Persia months ago ... but my laptop was extremely warm to begin with because the game and DOX's drivers pushed the temps up ... although not beyond into unreasonable levels ... plus I had my palms on the laptop itself and was playing the game in question for over 6 hours before any 'slowdown' happened ... and even then the FPS didn't drop to unplayable levels ... more like 10% decrease).

I do not necessarily think the gpu itself is at fault (although it's possible) as this seems more like a faulty display which corrects itself after closing/opening the lid.

I'll go to John Lewis in Oxford St. where I bought the laptop and explain the issue to them.
It's still under warranty after all (for another year and a half), plus I have the image of the problem I posted for you guys here still in my mobile ... which should provide a visual evidence for easier inspection.
    :D

Although, given the fact I installed 2GB of RAM (bringing it all to 4GB) into my laptop ever since I got it and discarded my old RAM stick of 1 GB (gave it to my best friend who says the stick died just recently on it's own) I'm afraid they don't break the thing since the stick in question is not under Acer's warranty.
Also, it's questionable as to how much time they will need to repair the laptop as I need it with me on a continuous basis for the most part.

Btw ... last night I installed Windows 7 Ultimate RC x64 over my XP SP3.
    It works great.
I only have to force Nero 9 to work.
The thing is I'm using Nero 9 Lite ... and for some reason, it won't start.
I'll try to install just burning from from the full version (I detest all of the other stupidities the company put into Nero to bloat it up needlessly).

Yeah, the best thing would probably be too take it back to the store and have them look it over.

I've noticed something similar, sort of. When ever my laptop has the lid closed, (I've disabled sleep when on AC power) and I pull out the plug (switching to battery mode), and open the screen at times it remains dark until I close and re-open it (not fully but just enough to turn the backlight off and back on)

If anything, you can remove the stick of ram you installed and leave it behind, telling them the 1Gb stick got messed up. Due to your photograph providing proof, they will have to check it, however since it happens randomly and not all the time, they probably won't be able to fix it

Planning on getting/building a cooler for mine, undervolting the CPU and OCing the graphics card once my exams are over
    Once it's stable I will commence the gaming :D :D :D

Whole stack of games I have to play since I didn't play alot this year

Hey Rayyan ... your issue with the black screen happening happened to me as well on Vista ... but rarely.

I have no idea what's causing my screen to throw up on rare occasions when I start up the laptop and why does the image repair itself after closing/opening the lid (which on 3 occasions had to be done multiple times).

As I said, I just don't want the store to keep my laptop for long periods of time (which I really cannot afford), mess it up and whatnot.
If it's necessary, I'll give them 24 hours to solve the issue.

As for removing the RAM I put in ... the thought crossed my mind earlier in the day.

I can understand how it's hard to leave the laptop for a long time, especially when needed constantly, and how you're worried they might mess it up

You should explain properly. because most shops do take a few days to diagnose the problem, and that might help em act a bit quicker

Well we do know that the hinges are the weak spot of 5930G ... it's possible some of the video cable connections god loose or unstable for the most part as a result of all the opening/closing the lid and/or transportation of the laptop (which I was doing when it was un-powered).

    So we have multiple possibilities:
The back-light ... the inverter ... the video cable connection on the LCD end or gpu end .... the video cable itself ... the gpu.

A wide range of things to go awry.
Btw ... I protected both Win 7 and Vista with passwords recently ...
Just a thing I decided to do.

Surprised I've never seen this thread! I've had my 5930g since September 2008 and it's been alright so far. After a while my network drivers must have crapped out because the network connection settings would literally takes around 15 minutes to even show up. I don't know how I fixed it, but I suspect it's the OS.

Going to reformat it to 64-bit Vista soon...just hope I have no major problems once I begin installing drivers.

I've noticed that a lot of you are using different temp programs to measure the CPU temperature. I read on guru3d that Real Temp turned out to be the most accurate. I'm currently idling at 54c but I suspect my load temp is too high and my CPU is being throttled, because anytime I'm running an intensive game my FPS will suddenly drop and the game will stagger for a little while before smoothening out. Time to clean some dust I suppose...

If you check my signature, you will see I have 2 x64 OS's (Win 7 and Vista).
I had no problems with drivers, and functionality is good.
You may experience problems with some programs that aren't native to x64 environment, but I had no major issues apart on Windows 7 because 1 or 2 minor programs don't support it (compatibility mode on the other hand works fine).

Here's and update on my status.
Went to John Lewis store yesterday and they called up Acer support service for me.
The guy waited for about 5 mins before getting in touch with someone.
I don't have the money to waste calling and waiting on an 08700 number.
In any event, the Acer support guy was of little help.
He asked me about the serial number of course, then also if I have any passwords on my system.
When I told him I placed passwords on both my OS's, he said that I should give him the password either now, or the tech support will remove it by themselves and charge £70.

I asked him why would they need access to the OS and my files to begin with when the problem can be evident after BIOS POS screen and upon the login into windows (if the laptop decides to mess up the image that is).
He said that he won't be doing the repairs himself and that whoever will be doing it might need access to the OS for testing.

And of course he stated it would take up to 10 working days (essentially 2 weeks ... and depending on the availability of the parts) before I'd get my laptop back.

The password issue is suspicious enough because the problem I have with the image being displayed properly on rare occasions is not related to the OS or software.
I tried explaining to the guy that I'm suspecting the video cable might be the issue on the lcd end, and perhaps the back-light/inverter, maybe the gpu (but I'm reserving that for last as it's a newer generation card).
I also mentioned I experience no artifacts during gaming or high temperatures, just a garbled image that appears on some occasions when I start up the laptop which is resolved by opening/closing the lid (sometimes a few times).
He simply ignored it and continued to drone about the password.

I told him I will think about it and possibly call back.

Issue is, 10 working days (or essentially half a month) is way too long for me as I don't have a substitute computer to work with here in London.
Are there any Acer repair shops in London I could go to that would accept my warranty by any chance and not charge for the repairs?
It just seems it would be faster if I go there myself, explain the problem and ask them to sort it out.
On the other hand, if the gpu has to be replaced, then sending it to Acer via pickup and waiting 10 working days (probably more) is something I'll have to do if I want my lappie to work properly.

That's harsh, but then again most tech support people are dumber than us tech enthusiasts :D :D
Asking for your password is a little suspicious although it may just be standard procedure in case they DO need the OS to do testing

Don't you have a roommate or someone, who's computer you could borrow while you send the pc in ?????

Anyway, if you can live with it and its not bothering you than I say just live with it, especially if you cant part with it (no substitute)
Also if you do give it in make sure too remove all personal files and stuffy you *may* have downloaded :p
Just to be safe, best thing would be to put it on an external hard disk and remove it from the laptop's hard drive

The thing is I don't want to mess with Acer support because they are notoriously BAD.
I don't want to receive my laptop with damage or non working components with the original problem unresolved.
    :D
If you have any suggestions about repair centres of Acer I could go to an the warranty would be accepted, I'd appreciate it.

    I have a question for windows 7 users :)

I have tried to install windows 7 a cople of times now but everytime after the installation on the first "monitor sleep" I cant get the mointor to wake up again and I need to restart the computer.

The only drivers I have installed are nvidias (on windows update) and the news audio drivers from realtek. All the other drivers are already installed from the beginning what I can see.

is there someone that have the same problem? what drivers are you guys install in windows 7?

Cant find any better nvidia driver then windows update, the one on nvidias site doesn't support the grafic card in 5930.

The ones on Nvidia's website DO support 9600m GT.
You have to download the mobile drivers for 9M series and select Windows 7 (32 or 64bit).

    That's odd.

You could try to manually install the drivers.
but before that, remove/uninstall any gpu drivers that might be installed.

Are you sure you downloaded the 9m drivers and not just 9?
    There is a difference.

Also, you can search up Dox's latest drivers ... that's what I used to install my drivers for the gpu in Win 7

yes I have the right one for 9M. But I think the last driver from nvidia 185.81 beta works for our computers. Cant find them though.

The DOX driver is just to install or do I need to copy mod INI file to the nvidia folder or how does it work?

If you are referring to the restore partition, I removed it months ago.
There is no point to the restore partition in my opinion because Acer puts all of it's bloatware into the OS which slows things down, and I prefer to just install the OS and set it up on my own.

When I was re-partitioning my HDD, I formatted the recovery partition (turned it into NTFS as well) and merged it with one of my 3 partitions I have at the moment.
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (RC) on my primary partition, Vista Home Premium Sp1 (x64) on the second partition, and have the third one for storing a variety of files.
I think I will just remove Vista entirely pretty soon and just merge those 50 GB with my third partition in order to gain extra space, or simply install latest Ubuntu on it in order to educate myself in the workings of that OS.

And as for the dual boot method ... pretty much a standard dual boot option.
If you want a dual OS, then what is recommended, it's that you should install the older OS first and then the new one.
But even if the new OS overwrites the dual boot screen, merely input the install disc into the laptop and click on the repair option (which will restore the dual boot).

The dual boot doesn't interfere with anything ... and if you want to keep your recovery partition, then don't format it or write anything on it (but given the fact it's invisible from inside windows, unless you use a re-partition program, I wouldn't worry about it too much).

Intel Wireless will not power up on Acer 5930G

After my laptop froze today, and i had to do a "hard reboot" my Intel Wifi Link 5100 card refuses to power on through the pushing of the button to the left. All the other buttons work, eg. internetbrowser-button.

The card is shown in IWCONFIG, but the switch to power it on does not work. Nor will it list any networks with IWLIST :( I am currently using a network cabel

    Please help! Thanks in advance!

    STOP 0x0000007f (0x00000008, 0xbab30d70, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

The BSOD only appears when the wireless (WLAN) is switched on from the button in the upper-left corner of the keyboard. It appears out of the blue (no apparent trigger) after some random time that the computer has been on, and regardless of whether I am connected to a WLAN network or not. If I disable the WLAN from the button, then the BSOD never appears.

I tried all the drivers I could find for this network adapter model (Intel 5100 AGN, on my version of the 5930G), but none kept the BSODs away.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks for any suggestions.

Heh, reformatted to Vista 64-bit Enterprise and the laptop runs so much better than it did before. Installed just enough drivers so that the laptop functions as it should without acer's software.

I undervolted the CPU to the lowest setting (RightMark CPU Utility set to 1.0000v) and it runs perfectly stable. Now I just need to open it up and clean the hell out of it. I think my temperatures will drop dramatically (currently my GPU hits 76c causing my CPU to heat up anywhere between 69c-85c when im playing games, but my CPU will stay at 70c when orthos is running).

Apart from opening/closing the lid if you are already in Windows ... or just resetting the computer ... there's nothing much to do really.

I think the problem might be with our LCD screens themselves and not the gpu (although I'm still not excluding the possibility of a gpu).
Thankfully, the issue doesn't pop out at any time while the laptop is in use and the image is initially fine ... it pops out if you activate the laptop from a cold start or just resuming from sleep mode.

This is why I want to avoid sending the laptop to Acer support.
In UK, their service support is horrid, and I don't want to end up with a faulty component or worse, while nothing has been done to correct the problem at hand.

The issue is if Acer support doesn't actually SEE the problem, they won't bother with it.
It's possible your screen activated properly every time they turned the laptop on.
Just how tech has a tendency of being I think.
    :D

I'll try to diagnose the problem in one of the other laptop service shops in London and see what might be done.

The microphone should be integral part of our sound card and/or webcam.
For that ... you have to go to Acer's website and download the Crystal Eye cam drivers and of course their sound-card drivers.

Using Acer's drivers for the sound-card is better due to the fact the sub-woofer loses functionality if new drivers from realtek site are used.

Wait, you mean that our sub-woofer won't work if we get the latest drivers from Realtek site

For the most part, that should be correct. It's because the sub-woofer is Acer's integration and not Realtek's (which just provide the sound card as a component component).
Unless of course someone tried to put newest Realtek drivers and got full functionality of the sub-woofer with them.
When I tried it, I lost the sub-woofer.

The differences (apart from specs which put the 5930 on a higher level) are that 5930G has a black casing all over (so the keyboard and casing around the power button is not white) and the quality of the build should be better as it's part of the recent Gemstone series (of which the 5920 was not part of to my recollection).

The 5930G was again based on the Gemstone design. If you look closely, you'll see that it looks the same with the 5920G, it's just in a black colour.
