Same for me when i changed my cpu, i cleaned a carpet of dust too. I know now why i used to hit 92°C before UVing

Yeah dust is a big problem with this laptop

BTW, I wanted to ask Kall,
did you change the thermal compound on the GPU and CPU, since you had your laptop already taken apart???

@Kallogan, is P9600 currently the highest we can put on 5930 ?

    Hey Ray ;-)

Yep i did but i just bought some generic thermal compound in a local store near my home, nothing exceptional. Brand JETART. I renewed thermal paste on both gpu and cpu. Actually i don't really care about thermal paste ;-) It was this one :

    http://www.jetart.com/style/content...omer_id=1153&name_id=17678&rid=36156&id=13002

Don't seem to be that bad according to the paper (dated of 2006 lol).I used something like 1% of the total syringe capacity lol. Don't know if i will ever use the rest of it.
    Why couldn't we put a T9800 for example ?

BTW, How are your temps with a T9600 on the 5930G ?

I think we can go with a cpu that maxes out with the TDP on 35W.
45W would be too much most likely due to power requirements.

Yep theorycally we might go til T9900.
But a P9700 even if it's a little less powerful is more tempting and reassuring when you're a "low temps addicted" like me.
I took the P9600 just because it's 25W TDP instead of 28W TDP for the P9700 lol. And because the P9700 is overpriced too ;)

I really don't like the fact Intel dropped the ball with our PM45 chipsets.
We can't use C2Q as a result (which would have been a far better upgrade if you ask me compared to the faster C2D).

Also ... can someone elaborate something for me?
    Regarding Acer's warranty service ...
I think their repair service is actually decent ... it's the customer service in the call center that isn't worth a dime.

Any sensible way of dealing with them?
I was thinking on giving them a call and asking directly for their manager and that I was completely unsatisfied with the previous call center operatives because I couldn't even voice my concerns without them being ignored and of course was quoted a price tag for removal of my passwords of £70 unless I give them full access.

That quite frankly is insane in my personal opinion.

Can't help about cutomer support. Last time i called one, i've almost eaten my phone. The guy was a total d*uche who didn't know anything about computers. Since then i've sworn that i'll never do such a crazy thing again ;-)

For sure it would have been. If you forget the fact that it's a power sucker and cost a leg ;-).

Hey guys, i decided to "split the difference" and put back 1V instead of the original 1,05V on my gpu in order to regain some OC possibilities ;-) Look at this : 6965 pts.

Not bad without OC the memory ;-) I can score 7000 with these clocks with better drivers i guess. 73°C max during the bench.

I found this on some threads. That's why i only OC core and shaders now. It causes less trouble and is more stable.

and as a bonus my max idle temps without any cooler, i'm in a good day ;-) :

I've always a core 2-5°C hotter than the other. Don't know why. Maybe i've spread the thermal paste like a pig ;-)
Actually, i have an hypothesis. The cpu usage seems to be always a little higher on the second core...

Normaly Windows uses only 1 core in idle, only in load it uses 2 cores.
Don't know if it get switched off, don't think so, because for the core i5 it's a hot new item. It switches 3 cores off, and overclock one..

But why are your idle temps so low, i never have that.. lowest temp are 36c and then my fan goes off, and the temps slowly rise to 50c again and then it turns my fan on again. Does your fan keep running?

Thought my battery was dead.. did'nt use it for a few weeks, and ofcourse the first time, you don't get much battery time, but after a few time recharching, i still could'nt get more then a hour out of my battery..
Even with full power saving everything off. If i surfed a bit with wlan its was only a half hour.

Scared me a bit, i put i away because i wanted to save my battery. (Heat issues and so on.)
And not for this to happen :p

I knew few things from my mothers laptop, but theres a complete science to keep your battery running

But ok what i did is; fully charched my battery again, and then left it for 2 days in to sleep, waited to die on it's own, the started windows again with AC, pulled it out again when it was in windows, and put it back in so you see the meter of your battery running in windows.. after this it's almost back to normal Thank god :D

The best tip i read, when you pull your battery out, and you know you are not going to use it for a few days leave it a 40% full, and then store as cold as posible.

My tip is to read how to maintane your baterry probably prolongs your battery life

Always funny to overcome a new adventure, and learn something new LOL :D

    Nice temps Kall ;)
Your 3Dmark score will be higher than mine, because my cpu scored only ~ 2030 pts

I have higher idle temps these days, because temps are really high where I live

Under normal room temps, with the AC on, this is the lowest my idle temps have ever gone:

But in reality my temps are usually around mid 30s CPU and ~46 Gpu

Of course I haven't yet undervolted the lower multipliers, for when it idles, so I might be able to take it lower :D

But looks like your CPU upgrade has really boosted your love of the laptop :D :D (and increased its overall performance :p ;))

I want to know this also

    So is it working now???

I can probably get about 2.5-3 hours off mine on power saver, I usually use it on balanced and only when I am watching a movie on my sofa or something

No it stops and turns on again at 50°C just like you.
I just went to clean my lap's vent and renewed thermal paste. In addition, it's probably due to the low 6x multiplier's voltage which is only 0,8750V on this core. However, i don't know what processor you have but 36°C is fine. I used to be always above 40°C with my T5800 ;-)

Hey Ray, the screen you've posted shows some boot temps i guess. I have such temps only when my computer just went to make a cold start ;-)

EDIT : My mistake, there are max temps on the screen. Impressive then !!!! You were in Alaska that day or what ????
I have another hypothesis :D You launched HWmonitor and then your lap went into sleep mode and then woke up and TADADADA 20°C !!!!!!

    Actually they weren't

They were after I had been using it, then left it idling for a bit and when I came back I saw HWmonitor running

You can see because the max temp is higher from when I was working with it before I left it too idle :p

    Nice overclocks and results Kallogan.

A question ... when your gpu was at 0.89v and you overclocked from 500/1250/800 to 600/1500/800 ... did the temperatures rise as well despite the voltage being set on so low?
I forgot to test mine like that actually because I simply decided to undervolt the gpu and leave the clocks on stock settings (but I'm contemplating on increasing them to 600/1500/800).
Also ... I agree that overclocking the memory on the gpu is best left alone.
Next to nothing is gained by doing it and it's better to not risk it.

Yes they rise but just a little compared to an OCing at 1,05V or even 1V. You'll only see 2-3°C more than usual at full load. That's almost insignificant. If you're 70°C, you'll be 73°C...

600/1500/800 at 0,89V is a very good compromise. It's cool and quite efficient if you look at my posts on RE5 benchmarks. At 0,89V my gpu limits was near 640/1600/800. It may vary on each gpu. If you want to try, do a software OCing with Nvidia system tools :

    http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/63-tools-and-technology/

It's quickly reversible and less laborious than a bios flashing. I do use it.

Yeah, i allready said that in my previous post :p But thank you for asking :)

Yeah battery life is about similair to yours, sometime a bit longer, sometimes it showed more then 4 hours battery life when it was 100% charged.. your not gonna get that in reallity, maybe a half hour less, but good enough :)
But now it's about 2hours of battery life, still not the same as it used to be :( But allot beter then half an hour

    I have p7350 UV to 1.013, can't go lower, locked i think..
When surfing around the 40's celcius and then the GPU 47

But on my lap my idle temps are quite high, to 50's celcius and then the GPU on 57c sometimes even higher..
And i can tell you my lappy is as clean as it can be, open it every month

Undervolting did'nt change my ilde temps i can say, to bad :(
But under load the GPU NEVER goes over 70c anymore, CPU stays around 60c with all games, with CSSource it feels like idleing, around 50c on the CPU and GPU about 60c.

That's something else then 80c for CPU and even higher GPU temps, right guys :p

I like your CPU Kallogan, but i still want the t9600 and a SDD, maybe a SDD before i buy a CPU..
But Kallogan, you don't have any problems with black screen anymore?
I still can oc the GPU to 680/1700 in GTA4 even when UV to 0,89v But in all my other games it craches above 600/1500, I DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!

T9600 is a good choice. Temps will stay pretty low i guess even more with a good undervolting ;)

Be careful, even if you can go at 680/1700 at 0,89V, it doesn't mean it's efficient. It doesn't crash necessarily but i have huge fps drops above 640/1600 in 3Dmarks. And the screen freezes in most of the games. It's catastrophical. My score is in that case lower than with 600/1500 cause the gpu lacks power. It's simple the score starts to decrease above 620/1550 or so for my gpu.
You have to go back to at least 1V if you want to play with such high clocks.

Concerning black screens. First, strangely i experienced less of them since my gpu is undervolted. Maybe it's just a coincidence don't know. Besides, i don't touch memory clocks anymore and it seems to be pretty beneficial.

As for SSDs i don't know if you've read a lot about them but it appears that putting a ssd gives a way more spectacular boost than changing the processor ;-) I can't wait for it :D
When you change your cpu first like me, there is no obvious boost cause our 5400rpm HDD is so crappy that it actually limits the overall lappy performance. But intel SSD+good processor and the lap will fly ;-)

There is a small sort of bottleneck phenomenon on RE5 bench.

    Remember :

    DX9 with 600/1500/800 at 0,89V : 38,2 fps (over 33,5 at stocks clocks)

    I tried with 660/1650/800 at 1V : 40 fps
    Then with 700/1750/800 at 1V : 41,5 fps

Not much of an improvement huh. Moderate overclockings are the best ;-) For me 600/1500/800 at 0,89V is the best performances/low temps ratio.

    Hi guys!

Recently I have been facing some overheating issues, when I was playing The Witcher with max settings, the GPU temp went in 10min from idle temps to ~95°C, once the computer even shut itself down (I assume it's a safety mechanism to prevent dangerous temps).
I have cleaned the heatsink and that solved my problem, my idle temps are now CPU ~31°C, GPU ~46°C, while playing The Witcher the GPU temp is holding at ~75°C, I don't have a cooler, nothing is tweaked - no UV etc. What do you think about this temps, are they fine? Could the overheating cause som hardware damage? - right now everything runs fine, I am experiencing no problems, no graphics glitches, visually nothing looks fried inside, so it would seem that no damage occured.

    Thanks. ;-)

My idle temps still really high compare to yours! And besides, the temp of my room is 31oC!!!! Where do u guys live!?!? :p
Ok... trying to find a good screwdriver to open mine and clean it...Besides, the UV of GPU really worthy? Like I use the NB mainly to university (some 3D draws em modeling) and games :p...

UV is extremely beneficial in terms of producing less heat and extending your laptop life span in the long run regardless of what type of work you do on the laptop in question.

So my suggestion would be to undervolt both the CPU/GPU and keep it that way.

In terms of overclocking the gpu, 600/1500/800 are stable on 0.89V for sure and there's no performance decrease due to lack of power such as Kallogan experienced on higher clocks and low voltage.
How much is gained exactly on the settings I specified Kallogan?
    15 to 20%?

As for my idle temps ... well, they are hovering at about 40 to 45 degrees even with my cooler active.
But as I already stated, my gaming temps on Prototype maxed out (without AA) on native res did not go over 60 degrees for the cpu and 63 degrees for the gpu.
So that's pretty low compared to what I had before.

I should really open up my laptop and clean out the heatsink as I think there's dust that my eyes can't spot, but also get my hands on proper cooling paste so I can achieve even lower temps.

P.S. Question about newest CPU-Z. Are you guys getting correct voltage readings with it? I do not. It continuously says 0.925v for my cpu at any multiplier despite CrystalCPUID being active. The older version of CPU-Z seems to be working fine though and reports voltages in accordance to what the CrystalCPUID set.

Nothing to add. both gpu and cpu UVed is heaven.
I'm back to 0,89V it's so much cooler and comfortable.

In fact for 600/1500/800 the increase is only 10-12% maybe 15% max but it can make a big difference ingame visually speaking when you flirt with 25-30 fps in the first place.

33,5--->38,2 fps in RE5 for example with DX9.
but only 29-----> 32,5 fps with DX10 which is used most of the time.

@ renegard - look back at around page 108 to find a link to the guide we used to undervolt the GPU

This is a great guide to undervolting your CPU, it is what I am using ATM

    @Kall

I have never OC'd the GPU, but I reflashed to 1.05V because I plan on OC'ing (someday :p) and want to see the max I can go, and also because I didn't notice a big drop after UVing like I did with the CPU

Also I dont think bringing a SSD wil improve performance that much
Boot up and loading in games will be faster, along with faster read/write times but that's it
I'd much rather have more space IN my laptop that a quicker boot time (not that I mind, and enjoy waiting :p)

I might re-flash back to 0.89 later in but I'm mostly playin battlefield hereos these days and its not demanding at all so no need for OC ;)

Yeah i know what you mean, when i OC my GPU memory it's maxed out on 971mhz and i leave it at 900mhz.
Just like my old 6800LE from 700 it went up to 887mhz and i left it on 800 (good old times ;) )

But i'm still trying, i think there allot to get out of my GPU.. played 700/1750/[email protected] once in GTAIV and then i really noticed stuttering.
Maybe when i OV my GPU to 1.15v, it will run smoother, but allot hotter too

And about SSD's i have only one thing to say:

You'll notice the difference when you'll put back 1,05V i promise ;-) I just experienced it. Almost ten degrees at full load on demanding games even more with Ocing. But maybe it's just my 9600M GT which heats more than others.

GTA IV ain't a good example since this is in my experience one of the few games that NEVER crashes even with sick clocks. Don't know why but one thing is sure, you can't take it as a reference.
Good luck with 1,16V, a lovely barbecue party for sure ;-) But your lap is SO SO cool that you probably won't go above 67 °C ;-)

Guys, one more question, which Nvidia driver are you using? I currently have the preinstalled 176.20. I have read on the internet that finding a good driver is a hit and miss thing and the newest one might not always be the best one for your system. I thought I would ask here - maybe someone has alredy given this subject some thoughts, performed benchmarks and tests.

Thanks for your answers in advance. ;)

I have tried most drivers, and I like using the latest ones as they fix bugs

I am currently using DoX's 185.85 driver, even though it runs hotter than the nVidia 186.03 driver

Performance is supposed to be better, but I haven't really noticed a big difference so I may switch back to the latest nVidia ones again

You should try both and see which one suits you better

New record burn baby burn :D

700/1750/850 That's what we call OCing with only 1V.
Actually clocking the memory with just a little 50 mhz boost gave me 150 points more.

I tried 720/1800/875 and Black screen of the death. Tried 1,16 V didn't change anything score is identical it crashed even more.

    Nice

I can probably clock that high, but your CPU score is waay higher than mine, so you stay on top ;)

Yeah but i'm not that high, alcyonex scored 7600 pts. I don't really mind. The good news is that according to my tests, 660/1650/800 at 1V seems to be stable ingame and temps stay pretty low with my P9600 UVed. Good compromise.

What sort of boost is there from overclocking this laptop

I am thinking of undervolting again, I noticed the higher temps :p, flat on the table of course, but still to used to low temps now

I might go with the same as yours, UV from 1.05 to 1V and get the max OC from there, or from 0,89V???

    Not sure which one??

    Edit -

Also, what is the difference between Dox 185.85 and 186.03, because this dox driver has higher temps then the nVidia one for me, esp. when idle

I've to admit that this lap handle correctly recent games for the moment. I OC mostly for the fun cause of course there's no drastic improvement to expect. Also we can say i anticipate in some manner upcoming games of the next months :p.

If you want to completely avoid heat concerns 600/1500/800@0,89V is the top notch compromise. It gives a sufficient boost.

You really have a big temps difference between Dox 185.85 and nvidia 186.03 ? I didn't notice significant heat increase between the both. Take the nvidia if it's cooler.Games performances are pretty similar anyway. I'm 190.40 now but not much of an improvement.

660/1650/800@1V is a kind of secret weapon against an eventual particularly demanding game ;)

Anyway you'll have to play a little with the clocks. Your lap may handle higher clocks than mine and maybe in a cooler way. Everything is possible. 1V seem to be largely sufficient for any OC and you shouldn't need to go above in my opinion.

    Nice score Kallogan!! :)

But he had an T9600 and even sicker clocks.
And on the other hand, do we still hear from him? i think he fried his lappy

Seems to me you got in the overclocking spirit too, you're way ahead of me, so i wont post any official results yet :p

Before i could'nt overclock in 3d03, CCSource, TDU and a few other games, not even 1Mhz. And when i could overclock in a game (except GTAIV :p)it got stuck on 600/1500, if i went above this always resulted in a black screen.

But I downloaded the newest driver sweeper, went in to save mode removed all nvidia items, installed 186.03, after that removed physx driver, and disabled it in the menu (afterall there only 1 game 1 know who uses it) and I unplugged my external 19" display..

After all this i can finally "normal" overclock

I can now even overclock in CCSource, i like the way this is going :D
Even started seeing Good Old Artifacts.. Yeah i know no good, but now i know where my limits are, but the clocks where pretty high too; 660/1650/900 If i lower them to 640/1600/900 they are gone.
COD4 is playble at 620/1550/900, but above that it crashes, but no longer in to a black screen, i just freezes now. Like it used to, with my old VGA.
And that's probably down to my GPU still runnin' at 0.89v

Oh and i did a run with 3D06 at: 620/1550/900
    Resulted in to this :p :p :p :

That seems to be the prevalent opinion :D

I have the same limit or so at 0,89V. I'll try with 900 mhz on the memory at this voltage just as a curiosity.
I don't know if it will work on many other games than COD4 though.

I prefer freezes to black screen :D Desactiving PhysX is a good idea when it comes to OC cause this thing is virtually incompatible with it. Besides, there are not so much games that use this crap.

I was in the spirit of not overclocking the memory anymore but i did forget how it boosts well performances. i've to admit that 7000 points at 0,89V and 71°C max is pleasant.

Will try this ingame to see if it's really beneficial. Cause i think we're really close to the 0,89V limits here. I desactivated PhysX too for the moment.

During RE5 bench, with 620/1550/900@0,89V i have the same framerate than with 700/1750/800@1V (and 5 degrees less ;-))

    Yeah i know a thing or 2 :p

Maybe we can go a little higher with the memory, but like i said before, 900Mhz is a good compromise..

And btw, 81c at stock clocks is normal and stable, if you have an OC at the same temp, it will never be stable, so what i want to say, the lower the temperture the higher you can go and the more stable it is..
Puting my AC at full blast today  see if it make a difference, maybe even put my lappy in front of it, at least that was my dream last night  :p

So 0,89V is just the temp of the core. The memory is powered with extra voltage i guess and is not affected by the undervolting. My memory doesn't handle more than 975 mhz anyway.

I finally succeded in selling back my crappy T5800 at about 40 euros. It wasn't that easy cause it's a old generation processor and people aren't really interested in it. A P8400 would be easier to sell back (about 80 euros)
Like that, my P9600 cost me about 150 euros or so.

On desktop VGA cards it is, so i think it's the same for a laptop.

Hmm, got stuck on the same speed as you, but then it's not effiecent anymore, 950Mhz seems to be working for me, in 3dmark and games, not all though :p Really get stuck on 624/1560/[email protected] almost 6100 points at 1280x1024(19")

What's your max at 0.89v and 1v Kallogan? I'm thinking of re-flashing, you probably did it 10 times allready, but i'm not as crazy as you :p

P8700 is soooo cheap, and it's almost the same as p9500 except for the chache..
Almost thinking of buying it, but it will be stupid because i don't really gain anything.
P9600 is a far bigger step, and probably beter.
But i'll wait to the prices go down a bit, i still see them drop every month.
And theres a good chance that i buy a SSD first, they got even cheaper, and so incredibly fast

i have flashed my gpu bios probably 20 or 30 times since i have my lap ;-)
624/1560/[email protected] same limit for me or so. At 1V, 700/1750/850 was the max
i successfully tested but maybe the memory can go higher ;).

As for processor, P8700 and P9500 are pretty identical. I mean 6MB cache instead of 3MB almost doesn't change anything in performances terms. Changing the processor isn't much of an improvement anyway. It was just fun to disassemble the lap.
There are only two games that are processor demanding for the moment GTA IV and World in conflict.

In games the cache can make a decent bit of difference.

Yeah but i don't know if it's significant considering the price. If you have meaning numbers and statistics, i'm all hears. Mhz impacts more than cache for sure.

Hmm, seems that i have to buy a new battery first.. After a few times working almost normaly again, maybe a a hour less then when it was new.

Battery doubler could'nt fix it, tried no other programs like that, anyone?

Went straight for the extrem option, i left it in the freezer for an couple of hours and then tried charching it, because my battery is full in half an hour.
And when it's cold it takes longer.
Now it took him almost 3 hours what i'm used to, but i have to say it did'nt fix it, maybe improved it a little.

When i'm down to 0min/1% it keeps running for at least 20min, on everything low. i can use it a little over an hour now, but battery is very weak, 1 3D06 test(so not the full test) when it's full and it goes in to sleep, and i'm down to 1% again.

I used the f*cker at max 10 times, all i did wrong is leave it charged 100%, and then store it, i now know you have to store it at 40%, and now it's to late.
But it's still not right, i saw a graph, and if you store it for 1 year at 100% it loses 20% of it's capicity, and not more then 60%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And it's not even a year gone, but yeah ofcource the six month are pased :(

Tried allot of things, anyone? and not the simple totaly discharge it and then charge it again sh*t :p

*In the hope that there's a battery doctor/expert reading this thread :p
