I'm almost 100% sure the dvd is fine because :
1:it happened with a few Dvds
2:all of them were purchased and burned 2 days ago and i've handled them carefully since then
    3:I found a temporary solution
when you first insert the Dvd the autoplay windows pops up where it keeps searching/inspecting the disc
Before, I used to just close it and manually open the disc and copy whatever I want. But when I just leave it running I have no problems and everything works smoothly :D ;)

Sounds laborious but if it's the only way to make it work properly. DVDs aren't very reliable in my opinion, the burning processus used to fail regularly on my previous lap...Now i stock all my data on external hard drives, never burned a dvd since i got this lap. I may put a secondary HDD in an optical bay instead of the dvd drive and use the dvd-drive externally for the rare occasions i would need it.

you can replace the dvd drive with an HDD on our laptop
    are you sure ?
but how would that affect the battery
and do I have to remove the back of the laptop to remove/put back the HDD or does it just slide in and out with some kind of a latch or something

I saw that on certain fujitsu seimens laptops but I never knew any laptop is capable of that

    Yep it's quite possible,

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4936086

i've already purchased the optical bay and it fits perfectly my lap. I'll mount it as soon as i get a ssd to replace my current HDD. Current HDD will go in the optical bay for data storage since ssds have limited capacity (and i can get a cheap one (64 GB or 80 GB) that way without worrying about being out of disk space). I'll put windows seven on the ssd which has trim command and will use it for gaming and applications. But i still will be able to boot on each HDD.

Picture of mine, you can see the sata adaptator :

In case you're wondering, screws are provided with the optical bay ;-) with a swap tool in case you need to hot swap between the optical bay/old dvd drive without disassembling the lap each time ;-)

You mean you installed it :p

    Grats

I personally wouldn't go with an SSD, as I can live without all that speed and like my wallet as it is :p

But I was also thinking of doing this with 2 500GB Drives

    mmmmmmm.....
    1 TB in a 15'' :D :D

BUT I use my DVD waaaay to much for this to be feasible as I would hate carrying an external dvd drive with me everywhere

So I'ma leave my 250 GB in the laptop and get a MyBook 1TB for all the non-essential data that doesnt always have to go with me

BTW - SSD will only increase boot times, and game loading
Plus give you bragging rights and sick benchmarks :D :D

No i didn't install or purchase it yet. That's a bench i've found on the net. I'm not so impatient ;-) Just bought the optical bay cause i found it very ingenious ;-)

I thought about going for a 500 GB 7200k too instead of a ssd but it won't be much of an improvement except for the additionnal room. And you know how i am, i need to try a ssd ! I'm a bit of a tech addict ;-)

Plus i can't bear my current HDD which is always lagging for nothing and pulling down the overall system performance.

I think i'll go for a crucial M225 64 GB or maybe even 128 GB instead of the G2 cause they're so so cheap compared to other SSDs. Performances are exactly the same than the ocz vertex or G.skill falcon since it uses the same indilinx controller.

Edit : Actually i'm impatient. I just bought the Crucial M225 64GB on ebay for 135 euros ;-)

Well, all is set up (except for the SSD ;-)). I definitely removed the safety screw of the DVD drive. It takes me only 2 secondes to swap between the optical bay and the dvd drive. Just awesome !!!

I was trying to figure out how a hard drive could make games lag :D :D

    Now that is definitely enticing!!!
    2 secs :D

But, would there be damage to the drive b switching quite alot, and how would you turn the drive off before removal???

Hotswapping the optical drive and 2.5" drive in optical bay caddy

Hotswap! provides a Safely Hotswap Hardware system tray icon to simplify disabling the device prior to removal or scanning the system when inserted. Allows hotswapping in/out the optical drive and 2.5" drive in optical bay caddy if using a primary SSD or HDD. Hotswapping is supported by the ICHxM SATA/PATA interfaces. So can for example watch a DVD with the optical drive then swap in a 2.5" HDD to access your multimedia files or documents.

The only thing I can think of os to un-install the driver and re-install it from HERE
Are you currently using the driver from their site, if not this is what is likely causing the BSODs, it happened on my dad's laptop once due to a techie installing a bad driver

If that doesn't work the only thing I can think of is to take it to Acer, or open find out the exact card you have and download its drivers from the actual site ( I think you have already done this??)

Have you tried running the setup of the driver via compatibility mode for Vista SP2?
    If not, try that.
Similar issue popped up with the soundcard drivers from Acer's website actually, and the only way I was able to install them in x64 Win 7 was to run the setup of the driver via compatibility mode.

Funny useless thing here. I can undervolt my 8x FID (2,13 Ghz) to 0,875V and it's stable. That's surprising. I thought it wouldn't handle voltages below 0,9375v like your cpu Rayyan.

    6x 0,875V
    7x 0,875V
    8x 0,875V (2,13 Ghz)
    9x 0,9250V (2,4 Ghz)
    10x 0,975V.

Above 8x i have to considerably increase voltages to avoid BSODs.

If i play games with my cpu locked on 8x, temps are incredibly low and it doesn't change the framerate in most games. It gives me a 2,13 Ghz cpu with 6MB cache. I'm definitely a green man ;-)

BTW i bought a wattmeter and will receive it soon. I will play with it to see the real impact of undervolting on power consumption ;-)

    cool

But then what's the point of having 2.66GHz if you run it at 2.1 :p

Mine can go below .9375 but the 8x multiplier crashes there, probably because for me its the highest multiplier, but for you its only a mid range one

    Exactly :p

On another note, I have gotten my CPU running at the max multiplier using RMClock

I can now undervolt it, without losing performance :D

I used this thread as a guide

When I tried adding another multiplier (x9) the only voltage availible was .7xxxx V
So instead I just changed the 8x multiplier to 9x in regedit
Now, under load it runs at 9x, but since the CPU is locked at its running at 8.5x (max multiplier :D)

Stable at .95V, haven't tried lower yet

Good for you ;-) RMclock is da best. I've been told that the IDA box is made for supporting half-multipliers too. I've no need of it cause my cpu is locked at 10x but with a P9500 or P9700 for example, ticking this box should theorycally unlock the half multiplier.

    Yeah
deks kept telling me to use CrystalCPUID but I didn't find it user friendly, it didn't autostart on boot and crashed at much higher voltages

Plus strangely I don't seem to have IDA, so the half multiplier wasn't availible

Also, enabling superLFM is good 4 idle temps as it causes my CPU to run at 600Mhz and 0.6 v :D

Next up I will re-undervolt teh GPU to 0.89v then overclock it as much as I can

Might reinstall vista but 64 bit once I get my new 1TB external drive,
Want to fix the drive's partitions
delete the recovery partition and make C ~30gb and
    D the rest (~200)

0,6v ???? Are you sure ??? Even unlocking voltages in RMclock by editing the registry didn't allow me to do that. Even if i put less than 0,875V, it still run on 0,875V cause voltage is hardware-locked. I know that cause my temps are still the same even with 0,6V in superLFM mode.

Look at the rmclock monitoring section to ckeck if it really runs at 0,6v.

Still showing 0,875V whatever the voltage is.

    hi all ...
really am very happy for being a member of this great forum ..
    recently i have installed windows 7 32bit rtm 7600
and i have installed the sound driver for windows 7 from realtek site ..
problem is when i played some games like C&C RA3 Uprising, Timeshift, .....
i hear some noise in the sound like someone crashing something...
anyway not in all games everything goes well in PES,Fifa,GTA, and more

is thise a problem due to 5.1 windows 7 support or what
other question how to get my micwork as it work in vista

    thanks in advance ..............

    Kallogan i'm jealous :D
    really great job congrats.

    a quick question
I wanna clean the laptop tonight (my temps are in their late sixties doing nothing (just google chrome open) on a table with the back end raised)
so if i remove the heatsinks do i have to reapply thermal paste
and if i have to, will a generic little cheap (like 10 cents a pack cheap ) paper pack degrade performance.
cause I don't think I'll find anything better here.

    alright
I've just cleaned it but i didn't remove the heatsink only the fan
as I expected there was a HUGE layer of dust covering the fan outlet from the inside so i cleaned the fan and the outlet and just like that there goes 15~20 degrees of my temps
Now i have time to thoroughly look for a decent thermal paste and maybe a decent cooler.

Don't use the Realtek drivers because they won't activate the subwoofer we have on this laptop.
If you are using a x64 OS, then download and install the drivers using the compatibility mode.
    It should work that way.

Guys, I just want to say: Finally I got some courage and flash my GPU, doing a UV to 0,89v... just AMAZING!
The temps reduce more than 15o degrees.... not lags on the games anymore..

    Yeah

High temps can cause it to lag, because of throttling to protect the device

    Grats on the flash
    I need to re-flash back to 0.89 miss those temps :D :D

Congrats. One person more who can say that it works great to all the pessimists of these forums. Grrr.

Now with cpu+gpu both undervolted, you can overclock your gpu without any problem to 600/1500/900. No black screens anymore and lower temps than before. I played Cryostasis, Batman, Resident evil 5, Wolfenstein and many others with those clocks. Not even a single crash. Completely stable. Never seen my gpu temp above 78-79°C. While playing with the same clocks at 1,05V it used to crash in many games.

You may say why ???? Because the gpu and cpu consume less power and your overall system will never hit the 90W limit (that causes black screen when overclocking at 1,05V) anymore.

Why does it always crash first in the firefly forest scene while benchmarking with 3dmark06 when the gpu is overclocked but not undervolted ??? Because this scene requires more power than the others that's all so the crash will always appear here. I know it because i have a Wattmeter. With my actual settings the firefly forest scene requires 7W more than the others.

Just one last thing if you guys want to upgrade one day. A SSD gives a wayyyyyyyyyy more noticeable boost than a processor upgrade. it's like night and day! So unless you really need a good processor for some particular applications like Deks who uses Studiomax, you should choose the SSD way. Keep in mind that a processor upgrade won't boost the gaming performances at all for 90% of the games.

This is my last input to this thread for a while ;-) Take care guys.

    Guys! Wazzup!?
Well, I think after I did the UV of my GPU i finally got guts to do also the change of OS, now I am using the Win7, but unfortunately my subwoofer doesn't seen to be working on theses last drivers of Realtek...
Should I just "downgrade" the drivers!? Getting the ones from the Acer website!?
Besides, I used to have an auto-hide bar where I kept all my games.. I just drag-nd-droped an folder on the corners of the desktop and that's it... It seen that this "feature" disapeared from the Win7, anyone has some hint for me!?
At least a docks sugestion? :D

    Thanks again!

    I don't use Realtek drivers on Win7.
Download the soundcard drivers from Acer's website for our laptop and run the setup file in compatibility mode for Vista as administrator.
